A Waterloo County man Kills His Stepson.

BERLIN, Dec. 20 Last night about 10 o'clock a murder was committed in the village of New Germany, about ten miles from here, by Martin Reinhardt, a man about 66 years old. The victim, Michael Hauss, a young man about 35 years of age was walking into the village when Reinhard met him and without a word plunged a knife into his heart, killing him instantly. A villager came here immediately and notified Detective Klippert, who left at once for the scene and succeeded in capturing the murderer at Mossborough Station, about twelve miles from here.

A BLOOD-STAINED KNIFE.

At the time of the arrest a large jack-knife, stained with blood, was found in Reinhardt's possession and he confessed that it was the weapon used. The motive for which the crime was committed is not known, but will doubtless come out at the investigation, which will be held tomorrow by Coroner B. S. Bowdly. A post-mortem will be held by Drs. G. A. Bowdly of Berlin and Roberts of New Germany. The prisoner seems to feel his position keenly.

MURDERS IN WATERLOO COUNTY

For the 6^th time, (in the history of our county, as far as we know definitely,) someone has been marked with the sign of Cain, in that he has stained his hands with the blood of a fellow human-being. As is usually the case with such crimes, there were no eyewitnesses to the horrible deed except the murderer himself and his victim, who has been silenced forever. Of the 5 known murder cases, only 2 came to trial, and in each of these, the accused was released, exempt from punishment.

The first case of which we have any information concerns an old Tiroler who resided in this area about 30 years ago and who disappeared inexplicably. For verification of the matter, nothing further appears to have come to light and the case never came to trial. A second case took place in Galt, also several years ago. In the Queen's Hotel there, Richard Lowell threw a boot-jack at the head of the negro cook. The cook's skull appears not to have had the customary thickness of most of his fellow countrymen, with the result that the victim died of his injuries.

On November 5, 1885, a youth, named Jertz, was killed on a farm near Strassburg, in the barn. A former worker on the place, named Ravennes, was arrested and despite strong circumstantial evidence, was released; he had confessed his guilt before the police chief of Galt. Since then, he has been accused of several crimes in the U.S. and now is confined under lock and key. On July 16^th, 1891, an old man Zackmann, by name, was shot in Lexington by Edward Stricker; the latter, along with several comrades, had serenaded the man, who lived alone with his wife, and a lot of nonsense took place at the same time. The coroner's jury found Stricker guilty of murder; he, however, had escaped and the indictment, apparently, was dropped. The 5^th case, the stabbing of Michael Haus by Martin Reinhardt on December 19, 1891 in New Germany, is known to everyone. The deed could not be denied, but strong extenuating circumstances existed and the accused had these to thank for his acquittal.

In the most recent case, a fight also appears to have been the cause of the deed. Whether the prisoner, or someone else, committed the deed, still has to be decided and this can only be determined by circumstantial evidence. In any case, this case exceeds the earlier ones in the atrocity of the perpetrator, who attacked his victim like someone possessed and then, to make sure the job was done, cut his throat.

MRS. JOHANNA KAUPA DIES IN ST. MARY'S

Mrs. Johanna Kaupa, 68, of 1529 Broadway ave., N.W., widow of Frank Kaupa, died Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary's hospital. She was born in Ontario and came to Grand Rapids 46 years ago.

Mrs. Kaupa is survived by three sons, Frank and Raymond of Grand Rapids and Pvt. Louis Kaupa of Camp Bowie, Tex.; five daughters, Sister Mary Camilla of Grayling; Mrs. Charles Ross, Mrs. Julius Bockheim, Mrs. Jerome Nawrocki and Miss Irene Kaupa of Grand Rapids, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony's church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

Funeral service was conducted Saturday at St. Theresa's RC church, Elmira, for William George Bauman of 34 Duke street, Elmira. He died Thursday at K-W hospital at the age of 80. Burial was in St. Boniface RC cemetery. Maryhill.

He had farmed for 45 years at RR1 West Montrose.

He was the husband of Mary Fehrenbach: father of Dolores (Mrs. John Hesch) of Ariss. Urban of West Montrose, Marie (Mrs. Edgar Warren) of Galt, Sister Anita of Brantford and Leona (Mrs. Peter Grobe) of Kitchener: brother of Eleanor (Mrs. Herbert Cook L Regina (Mrs. Harold Moore), both of Florida, Frank of Stratford. Richard. Alfred, Marie ( Mrs. Charles Benninger), Evelyn (Mrs. Robert Phillips), all of Kitchener, and Norman of Breslau. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren: one grandchild predeceased him.

Born at Maryhill, Mrs. Kurtz was the former Helen Edith Schell, She had lived in the same area throughout her life and was a member of St. Boniface RC Church at Maryhill and the Calholic Women's League.

Surviving, In addltion to her husband, are four sons, Gerald and Ralph of Guelph, and James and Wilfred of Arias; three daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Dorothy) Hail of Guelph, Mrs. James (Rita) Tracey of Port Huron, Mich., and Mrs. Richard (Irene) Laidaw of Trenton; a sister, Mrs. Irene Readwin Calgary; four brothers, Leonard of Kitchener, Louis of Maryhill, George of Hespeler and Wilfredof Guelph; 27 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was prececeased by a brother, Alex of Edmonton.

Requiem high mass was at St. Boniface RC Church, Mary Monday. Burial was in St. Boniface cemetery, Maryhill.

RAU, Margaret C. - Of Rochester Hills, Michigan and formerly of West Branch, died suddenly, on Saturday, August 25, 2007, at the age of 84.

Margaret was born in Maryhill. Margaret attended Mount Carmel School of Nursing, receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked in hospitals and doctor's offices for 40 years and finally retired from GM Truck and Bus.

She devoted her life to helping others, she will be remembered for her many kindnesses, her generous heart and will be greatly missed.

Predeceased by her birth parents, William and Bridgette Zinger; her beloved guardian/adoptive mother, Emma Rau and her step-sister, Florence Rau; her brothers, Edward and Alfred Zinger and sister, Madeline Dietrich.

Loving sister of Mary (the late Carl) Kraehn and Wilfred (the late Grace) Zinger. Sister-in law of Dorothy and Helen Zinger.

Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins both from Canada and the United States who will dearly miss her.

Parish prayers were recited on August 30th at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. S., Kitchener.

Mass of Christian Burial took place on Friday, August 31, 2007 at St. Boniface RC Church, Maryhill with Father Ronald Voisin PP officiating.

Albert C. Bruder, beloved husband of the former Annetta Raitar; dear father of Mrs. Walter (Ann) Bolger and Mrs. Vincent (Grace) Kurtz, both of Ariss and Paul of RR 5 Guelph. One son, James predeceased him (1971). Lovingly remembered by 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Albert, the eldest son of the late Charles Bruder and Ida Lehman, was born in Ariss, Ont., April 19, 1907, and until his retirement farmed in the Ariss- West Montrose district all his life. He was a member of St. Boniface RC Church, Maryhill. The Holy Name Society, and Branch Number 6024 of Knights of Columbus.

Predeceased by his parents, William and Mary Bauman; daughter, Deborah Ann (November 2006); sister, Delores Hesch, sister, Anita and her husband Wendel Elter; brother-in-law, Edgar Warren and his niece, Carol Warren.

Urban "Herb"'s first passion was the family farm. He retired as a Real Estate broker after four decades and was involved in Home Building and developing for twenty years.

Urban was a charter member of both the Waterloo Knights of Columbus and honourary life member of Maryhill Knights of Columbus as well as a fourth degree member and past Grand Knight of Maryhill Knights of Columbus and a long standing member of the St. Boniface Holy Name Society.

Urban was also a past trustee of St. Boniface Separate School Board and a past Board Member of The Elmira and District Association for Community Living.

The family received their friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Boniface R.C. Church, Maryhill on Friday, May 9 at 10 a.m. with Father Ron Voisin officiating followed by interment in St. Boniface R.C. Cemetery, Maryhill.

Parish prayers were offered at the funeral home.

In his memory, donations to St. Boniface R.C. Church Building Fund or The Elmira and District Association for Community Living would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.

Passed away suddenly on November 19, 2011 in his 73rd year.

Beloved husband, best friend and soulmate for 45 years of Joanne Sarkisian of Cambridge.

He will be missed by his beloved canine Shannon and will be lovingly reunited with Snoopy and Lacey.

Survived by his brother Jim (Patty) of California and their family Jennifer, Jeffrey and Jay, their spouses and families; niece Brenda (Ken) Jackson of Baden and nephew Brian (Hilda) of New Hamburg and their family.

He will also be remembered by the family of the late Michael Doherty, many cousins and friends.

Beloved brother-in-law of Bob and Dorothy Sarkisian of Orangeville and their family.

Predeceased by his parents Mary Bauman (Weiss) and Richard Bauman, his sisters Ruth Bauman and Geraldine Doherty, brother-in-law Gerald Doherty, nephew Michael Doherty and sister-in-law Joyce Bauman.

Lloyd enjoyed a 25 year career in real estate before retiring. He fulfilled his life long dream when he opened Preston Pawn Shop. Lloyd enjoyed many years with a passion for collecting collectables of all kinds.

Lloyd had a loving, caring compassionate nature and was much loved and will be sadly missed.

A liturgy service took place in the chapel of at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener on Friday, November 25, 2011.

Interment occurred at Maryhill Cemetery following the reception.
