    Well-Known North Dumfries Farmer Passes in His 79th Year

    August C. Lisso, prominent farmer of North Dumfries township for over 40 years, passed away on Saturday morning in his 79th year, after an illness of three years. Mr. Lisso was born January 1, 1867, at Clearview, near Hespeler, the youngest son of the late John Lisso and Mary Krempein. He married Margaret Reid of Culross Township, Bruce County, in 1895. A member of the North Dumfries Council for four years, Mr. Lisso also served on the Reidsville school board for a number of years. He was a member, of Knox United Church, Ayr. As a young man, he worked in and around Reidsville first for the late John D. Moore, for six years; then for the late Henry Shantz and later for Andrew Kersel. He then moved to Alma, where he first farmed tor himself. Mr. Lisso later moved to Preston, where he worked in the hop yards for three years for the late John D. Moore. Leaving Preston, he returned to this district where he purchased the William Matheson homestead, 9th concession of North Dumfries Township, now occupied by his son, Frank. Here he lived for 15 years. He then purchased the Robert Cranston homestead, where he had resided for the past 26 years. Mr. Lisso had a wide circle of friends who will regret to learn of his demise. Surviving are his widow, Margaret Reid Lisso; two daughters, Mrs. James Gemmell, Ayr, and Miss Isobel Lisso, at home; three sons, Frank, Reidsville road; Albert of Waterdown, and August on the homestead; also two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Wildfong, Hespeler, and Mrs. Minnie Woodhouse, Hespeler, and nine grandchildren. A son, William, predeceased him in 1918. - The Funeral - The funeral, which took place from the Harold Gray Funeral Home, Galt, on Tuesday afternoon to the Ayr Cemetery, was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. R. A. Steed, pastor of Knox United Church, Ayr, and the pallbearers were: Geo. P. Moore, Donald Robertson, Martin Cochran, William Brown, Robt. M. Ford and Stewart Lake.

    MISS ISABEL LISSO

    The death occurred on Wednesday, August 21st, of Miss Isabel Lisso, daughter of Mrs. August C. Lisso and the late Mr. Lisso, of Reidsville, following an illness of many years. Miss Lisso was in her 51st year, and was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr.

    She was born in Bruce county, near Teeswater, but had lived practically all her life in the Reidsville district.

    Surviving, besides her mother, are one sister, Mrs. James Gemmell (Clara) ,. Ayr, and three brothers, August S. Lisso, R.R. 7, Galt; Frank Lisso, Reidsville, and Melville Lisso, Waterdown.
    The funeral, which was private, took place on Saturday afternoon from the residence of her sister, Mrs. Gemmell, Northumberland St., Ayr. Rev. J. W. Currie conducted the services, and the pallbearers were: Donald Robertson, Stewart Lake, George Moore, Norman McLeod, Albert Scott and James Gemmell. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.

    Bright Young Man Succumbs - Throughout the civilized world and ..?..of the …?... that the ? total of victims will greatly exceed that of the greatest war in any age. Already the number of colossal, and there is no telling when the disease will exhaust itself. No community throughout the land appears to be immune, but some sections have undoubtedly suffered more than others. A remarkable thing about his hitherto unknown disease is that it attacks those of splendid physique just as readily as it does those who are constitutionally week, with the chances for successfully combatting it about equally divided. On Saturday last a young man in this vicinity, William Reid Lisso, succumbed to influenza and pneumonia after an illness of about 14 days. He was in his 21st year and was of fine physique, indicating that youth and physical prowess do not avail. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Lisso of North Dumfries, and was one of the most scholarly young men in the district. His primary schooling was obtained at Reidsville, after which he spent three years in the Ayr Union Continuation School and four years in the Galt Collegiate, finishing up by winning second prize for the County in the Carter Scholarship contest. While at Galt he was a member of the Cadets, with the rank of Lieutenant, and won three medals for target shooting. He was a member of Knox United Church and took an interest in church work. Besides his father and mother, he is survived by three brothers (Frank, Melville and August) and two sisters (Belle and Clara). On Monday his remains were interred in the Ayr Cemetery, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Norman McLeod, James Gemmell (RR 2), Thos. Ritchie, James Gemmell (Ayr), Earle Currie and Walter Thomson.

Beloved husband of the late Doris Eleanor McConnell. Dear father of Frank of Durham, Ervin and his wife Marjorie of Paris, Ont., Herbert and his wife Di Anne of RR 1, Ayr; dear brother of Albert of Paris, Ont. Also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Predeceased by a daughter, Margaret; two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Lisso was born at Mildmay on September 18, 1900 and farmed all his life in North Dumfries township. Resting at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrew St., Cambridge, where the family will receive friends today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be held from the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. Interment Ayr cemetery.

    Mrs. James G. Gemmell, a long time resident of Bute Street, Ayr, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Wednesday, August 16th. She was in her 87th year. Born in Galt, she was the former Mary, Clara Lisso a daughter of the late August Lisso and Margaret Reid. For 20 years she operated a grocery store at the corner of Hall and Northumberland Streets, Ayr. She was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr and past member of the Women's Auxiliary. Predeceased by her husband James in 1977; a son Howard, sister Bella Lisso and brothers August (Toots) Lisso and William Lisso. Survived by a son, Gilbert Gemmell and his wife Anne of Southampton; three grandchildren, Clif-ford Ingham of Branchton, George Gemmell and his wife Greta and Kenneth and his wife Margaret (Peggy), all of Ayr; six wonderful great-grandchildren, Belinda Pettigrew, Edward, Daren and Tracy Ingham and Cheryl and Patricia Gemmell; two great-great-grandchildren and two brothers, Albert Lisso of Paris, Ont. and Frank Lisso of Cambridge (Preston). Rested at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, where funeral service was held on Saturday. Rev. George Saunders of Knox Church officiated. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    August (Toots) Lisso entered into rest peacefully at his residence on the Greenfield Road, RR 4, Galt on September 15th. He was in his 73rd year. Born in North Dumfries Township at Reidsville, he was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August C. Lisso. He farmed for many years on the Greenfield Road: for six years prior to retirement he was supervisor of the township landfill site off Greenfield Road. Mr. Lisso was a well known member of the former Strollers Orchestra. Beloved husband of Ella Hagedorn; dear father of Barbara (Mrs. Sandy Marshall) of Willowdale; Kenneth of Dundas; Douglas of Conestogo; Marilyn (Mrs. David Minister) of Melbourne, Australia. Cherished grand-father of Chris, Kevin and Todd Lisso and Jacqui and Karen Marshall. Dear brother of Clara (Mrs. J. Gemmell) of Ayr, John Franklin of Reidsville and Albert M. of Paris. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a sister Miss Isabelle Lisso and a brother William. A memorial service was held Monday evening, September 15th at the Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Cambridge, with the Rev. Fred Rice of Glen Morris United Church officiating.

    Charles M Kuntze died Thursday at K-W Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 81.

    Born in New Hamburg Aug. 25, 1889, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kuntze. He was a member of Zion United Church, here.

    He was predeceased in 1965 by his wife, the former Margaretha Hahn whom he married Sept. 1, 1915. Three brothers and two sisters also predeceased him

    Surviving are one son, Eugene of Elmira; two brothers, Menno of Detroit and Leslie of Kitchener; four sisters, Mrs. Rosetta Murray of Kitchener, Mrs. Adeline Binkle and Mrs. Matilda Laschinger, both of New Hamburg, and Mrs. Lucinda Duncan of Baden and one grand-daughter.

    Funeral service was held at Zion United Church in Elmira on Sunday. Rev. M.E. Reuber officiated. Burial took place in the Elmira cemetery.

After retirement the family moved to Paris.     Former long time Ayr resident Ernest Gilbert Gemmell of Southampton died at St. Mary's General Hospital, Kitchener on Friday, December 26, 1997. He was in his 74th year. Born in Ayr, he was the son of Mary Clara (Lisso) and James Gilbert Gemmell. Gilbert worked for several years at Ayr Feed and Supply. In the early 1960's he purchased Laird's grocery store in downtown Ayr which he and his wife operated. The store was sold to Charles McCann in December, 1973. In December, 1976 the store was purchased by Little Short Stop a firm which he worked for, most of the time as manager of the Ayr location. He retired in 1986, at which time he and his wife moved to Southampton. He was a member of Southampton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155, and was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr and St. Paul's Anglican Church, Southampton. Gilbert is survived by his wife Anne Hawes; his three sons Clifford Ingham and his wife Ute of Elora, George Gemmell and his wife Greta, and Ken Gemmell and his wife Peggy, all of Ayr, his six grandchildren Edward, Darren, Tracey, Belinda, Cheryl and Patricia; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Howard. Funeral service was held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 30. Interment Ayr Cemetery.
