CENTENNIAL OF SUDDABY SCHOOL, KITCHENER September 27, 1957

Thirty-two former students of Central School, Berlin, all of whom entered prior to 1900, heard again the ringing of the old school bell, before it was received by W. H. E. Schmalz for installation in the school house at the Ontario Pioneer Community in Doon. The oldest former student present was 89-year-old Mrs. J. C. Breithaupt who entered in 1876. Central School was renamed in 1910 in honour of Jeremiah Suddaby who in 1877 was first principal of the model school for training teachers.*

Guest speaker was Education Minister Dunlop who said that while he presided often at the opening of new schools, it was a novel experience to appear in a school which had seen a century of service. In 1882 the first kindergarten was opened with Janet Metcalfe as teacher.* At the close of his address Mr. Dunlop unveiled a plaque in honour of the centennial.

    * Suddaby School, formerly Central School, W.H.S. Report, 1942.

    1908 - Edward A. Rieder - 1966

Edward A. Rieder, chairman of the board of directors of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada, passed away May 23, 1966, following a lengthy illness. The fortitude with which he faced the ordeal of his illness and the courageous way in which he continued to devote himself to his company's affairs as long as he was able to do so have commanded the unreserved admiration of all who knew him.

Mr. Rieder was, by nature, reserved. He did not covet honors for himself, and he shunned the spotlight of publicity. However, imbued with a tremendous sense of responsibility, he brought to the offices which he held a wealth of dignity and efficiency. His judgements and decisions were always based on high principles. His quiet friendliness, his sincerity, his keen sense of humor, and his optimistic outlook will be greatly missed.

He was born in Kitchener, Ontario, on October, 6, 1908, a son of Margaret M. and the late Talmon H. Rieder. He attended Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1931 with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce. He joined the actuarial department of the Mutual Life of Canada in 1931, and his entire business career of nearly thirty-five years was with this company.

He became a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of America in 1937. He was appointed assistant actuary of the Mutual Life in 1938, associate actuary in 1945, actuary in 1948, assistant general manager and actuary in 1954, and vice-president and general manager in 1958. In February, 1959, he was elected executive vice-president, and in May of that year he was elected president, which office he held until he was elected chairman of the board in 1964.
Mr. Rieder was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He was also a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a past president of its predecessor organization, the Canadian Association of Actuaries. He was a past president of the Canadian Life Insurance Association and served with distinction in this and other capacities for the Association.

He is survived by his mother; his wife, formerly Jean Rudell; a son, Thomas; three daughter, Sally, Mardi, and Janet; a brother and a sister - to whom our sympathy is extended.

Jim Breithaupt remembered for dedication to serving the community

NEWS 08: 42 PM by Johanna Weidner Waterloo Region Record

Waterloo Long-serving Kitchener MPP Jim Breithaupt has died.

Breithaupt passed away last Wednesday at the Freeport campus of Grand River Hospital. He was 83.

"He was a good fellow," said longtime friend Harold Russell. "He was a person who made a terrific contribution to the civic life of the community."

Born in Kitchener in 1934, Breithaupt became a lawyer and then deputy judge, and proudly served in the Canadian Army militia.

Breithaupt was elected MPP five times, representing Kitchener at Queen's Park from 1967 to 1985 as member of the Liberal Party.

"He was a good politician and a good voice for the community," Russell said.

John Milloy, former MPP and Liberal cabinet minister, met Breithaupt in 1981 as a young Liberal volunteering on Breithaupt's re-election campaign.

"He was someone who was very astute politically," Milloy said.

Milloy said the five back-to-back wins were especially impressive given that Breithaupt was an opposition member. He was respected and well liked both at Queen's Park and in the community.

"He was always very popular," Milloy said. "He had a good way with people."

When Milloy later became MPP for Kitchener, he said he often turned to Breithaupt for advice and guidance.

"I was always proud to have Jim Breithaupt as one of my predecessors," Milloy said.

Breithaupt had a self-deprecating sense of humour, and his military background was apparent in his appearance and demeanour, Milloy recalled. His shoes were always polished, his outfit tidy and he was "unfailingly polite."

Breithaupt's family has a long history in the area.

His grandfather A.L. Breithaupt was a son of German immigrant Louis Breithaupt, who founded the Breithaupt Leather Company in the mid 1800s. Breithaupts served as city councillors, MPPs and MPs, and were very involved in community and church.

In a 2009 Record article on his family's legacy, Breithaupt credited his family's reputation for winning his first election as MPP. He just assumed he would serve the community.

"It sort of goes from one generation to the next," he said. "We just keep offering and it seems to be well accepted."

Breithaupt was active in numerous organizations in the community, including the Royal Canadian Legion, the Concordia Club, and German Pioneer's Day committee, and he received many medals and honours.

"He was involved in the community in an amazing number of ways," said Russell, who met Breithaupt in the 1960s in the militia as young captains and then later brought him into the Waterloo Historical Society.

"He was a very civic-minded person," said Russell, adding that Breithaupt was proud of his family's name and traditions, and wanted to carry that on in the community.

Breithaupt received a doctor of laws degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2006 and was honoured as one of 100 "alumni of achievement" on Laurier's 100th anniversary.

While vice-chair of the board of governors for the Waterloo Lutheran University, as it was then called, Breithaupt suggested the name of Wilfrid Laurier when the university became a provincial institution in 1973.

Breithaupt was commissioned in the Royal Canadian Artillery after completing officer training in Manitoba in 1952-54. He served in various command roles before returning to Waterloo to practise law and then transferred to the Scots Fusiliers of Canada '97 the eighth officer member of his family.

When it amalgamated with the Highland Light Infantry, Breithaupt served in the Highland Fusiliers of Canada as company commander, rising to commanding officer from 1971 to 1973.

Breithaupt is survived by his wife Jane, children Jennifer and Martha, and grandchildren.

A visitation is being held at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home in Waterloo on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

A private family service will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Waterloo.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Last Post Fund, a charity Breithaupt supported that ensures all veterans get a dignified funeral and burial.
