Elmira cyclist described as incredibly kind, caring and a 'well-respected leader'

ELMIRA - Orvie Bowman is being remembered by friends and colleagues as an incredibly kind, thoughtful and genuine person.

The 48-year-old father of three died on Friday after he was involved in a collision while biking in his hometown of Elmira.

Waterloo Regional Police said emergency services were called to Arthur Street North, near Florapine Road at around 6:50 p.m. on Friday after the driver of a pickup truck hit a cyclist from behind. Police said an 18-year-old from Mount Forest was behind the wheel of the pickup.

No charges have been laid, and police said the investigation is ongoing.

Police said they will not identify the man who was killed in this incident, but Bowman's family has confirmed his identity.

Bowman was the Chief Financial and Investment Officer at MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates) based in Waterloo. On the company's website, a page was created in his memory.

"Orvie was incredibly bright and disciplined as our CFIO, and we will miss his warmth, sense of humour, quick wit, and caring nature," wrote president and CEO of the company, Dr. Dorothy Nyambi.

"His passion for helping others made him an invaluable part of our MEDA family. The entire MEDA family mourns the loss of a colleague, a family man, and our friend."

A Go Fund Me page has been created in support of his family. On the page, people shared stories of how they knew Bowman and described the impact he had on their lives.

Christine Walter said she was hired by Bowman in 2014. She describes him as a great boss and a fantastic person who will be dearly missed.

"He really cared about his people and was a very intelligent and well-respected leader," she wrote.

Rick Brunet wrote "Orvie will always be remembered by me as someone who genuinely cared about people and had the courage to always advocate for doing the right thing. He was a special individual who adored his family, supported his friends and with his mild manner, won the hearts of everyone he touched."

In his obituary, Bowman is described as a valued volunteer at several organizations and a board member at Ray of Hope. He was an active member of the Woodside Church community and had a wide network of friends.
