Crash victim called a popular VON nurse

A woman killed when her car collided with a five-ton cattle truck Tuesday morning on Clyde Road, five kilometres east of Cambridge, has been identified as Mary-Joe Halliwell, a member of the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Halliwell, 33, of 141 Duke St. E., Kitchener, was pinned in her car after the head on crash.

Halliwell was going to see a patient at the time, said Lynne Roden, VON executive director.

"She was extremely popular. The people who knew her really liked her. She was perfect," said Roden, adding that the staff is taking her death very hard.

Halliwell, who lived alone, joined the staff a month ago after leaving her job as a critical-care nurse at Brantford General Hospital. She was an engineering technologist before becoming a nurse, said Roden, who knows Halliwell's family.

Halliwell is survived by her mother, Eleanor Halliwell, of 181 Bordon Ave. N., Kitchener. "I am having a rough time. She was my only child," her mother said.

Sgt. Bill Chipman, head of the traffic branch, said a preliminary investigation shows that icy road conditions caused the accident,

Damage to the truck, which was loaded with 31 calves for delivery to Grober Veal in Cambridge, was estimated at $25,000, said Staff Sgt. Don Herman of the regional police.
