SHANTZ.- In Wilmot, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralysis, beloved wife of Joseph Y. Shantz. She lived to be over79 years of age. She lived in matrimony over 60 years, and leaves a loving husband, nine children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sister Shantz was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. In her last sickness she bore her affliction with Christian fortitude. May her life long be remembered. Funeral services were held by Bro. E. S. Hallman, in English, from Rev.14: 13, and Bro. Amos Cressman, in German, from Phil. 1: 21, at Geiger's M. H., where her remains were laid to rest.

Shantz.--Barbara Shantz, beloved wife of David Y. Shantz, died Sept. 11, 1913; aged 90 y. 10 m. 25 d. The funeral was held on Sunday, Sept. 14, from her late residence to Stantz's Cemetery for interment. Her husband preceded her 19 years. She leaves to mourn 5 children, (2 daughters and 3 sons), 32 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild, and an only brother, Noah Stauffer, and a host of friends. She was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and a friend in need. The funeral was one of the largest over held at the place. Funeral services were conducted by Bishop Jonas Snyder and Manasseh Hallman. A very impressive sermon was preached from Isa. 38: 1, "Set thine house in order, for thou shalt die and not live" (John 16: 33). "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years, as long as she was able to go to church her seat was seldom vacant. The last few years of her life were spent mostly at home, her body and mind being somewhat weak, but she was always able to be up and around within one week previous to her death. She was confined to her bed just one week. The last few days she lay unconscious of her surroundings with all the loving friends around the bedside. With her life ends the last of the pioneers of the community. She was one of the first settlers, had the privilege of seeing the community build up and saw her companions laid away one by one. She was the last to be laid to rest. May we ever cherish her memory.

Mr. and Mrs. Noah Stauffer

The loss sustained by the county in the death of Noah Stauffer on Sunday was increased this morning when Mrs. Noah Stauffer died at her home, 131 William street, in her 84th year. Mr. And Mrs. Stauffer celebrated the 60th anniversary of wedding last November. The late Mrs. Stauffer, whose maiden name was Barbara Betzner, is survived by two sons O. B. Stauffer of Arcola, Sask., J. B. Stauffer of Lethbridge, Alta., and one daughter, Mrs. J. S. Snider of Waterloo. Three brothers, A. F. Betzner of Kitchener, Moses B. Betzner of Baden an Samuel Betzner of Dawson, Yukon Territory, and two sisters, Mrs. Ephraim Cressman and Mrs. Aaron Cressman of Kitchener also survive. A double funeral will be held from their late residence 131 West William street on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock to the Waterloo Mennonite church for service followed by internment at the Erb street cemetery

Rev. Noah Stauffer

In the death late last evening of Rev. Noah Stauffer, at his home 131 West William street, Waterloo and the county at large lost one of its best known and highly respected citizens. Ordained in Strassburg the late Rev. Mr. Stauffer had given 53 years of his life as a minister of the gospel. Ordained in Strassburg in 1876 Rev. Noah Stauffer served the Mennonite congregation there until he moved to Waterloo about 18 years ago. He was in his 87th year. He is survived by his wife, who is in a very critical condition due to old age infirmities, two sons O. B. Stauffer of Arcola, Sask., and J. B. Stauffer of Lethbridge, Alta., and one daughter Mrs. J. S. Snider of Waterloo. Funeral announcements will be made later.

Stauffer, Noah (1842-1928)

Noah Stauffer (1842-1928) was a prominent minister in the Ontario Mennonite Conference (Mennonite Church). He served in the Weber congregation (now Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship) near Strasburg (now part of Kitchener, ON). He was one of the first to advocate evangelism and missions, was a leading promoter of the Mennonite General Conference, and was probably the first to use English regularly in his preaching over the course of half a century

Pioneer Park (Weber/Strasburg) Christian Fellowship Mennonite Church

Early services were held in the homes of the first settlers, perhaps as early as 1833. Services often were held at the home of David Weber who lived across from where the church would be located. David Sherk was ordained deacon to serve the group in 1837, and in the next year, 1838, he was ordained minister. He was followed in 1840 by John Steckle (Stoeckle).

In 1842, David Weber donated one acre of land for a meeting house and burial ground. The deed was dated March 23, 1854, although the meeting house had been built in 1843. A new yellow brick church was built in 1894 on the same site. Noah Stauffer, who had been ordained in 1876 to assist John Steckle, was minister at the time. A Sunday School was organized in the 1890s; Sunday School records date from 1898. In 1899 the first Bible Conference to be held in an Ontario Mennonite church was held in the Weber church.

In 1971-1972 the church was enlarged and completely renovated. During that time - from October 17, 1971 to January 23, 1972 - the congregation met in the Herbert Feick home on Doon Village Road. On September 24, 1872 the congregation celebrated the 130th Anniversary of the building of the first meeting house. The name of the church was changed to Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship Mennonite Church in 1972.

In 1951 the congregation had purchased from Clifford Snider an additional acre of land located behind the church. In 1976, for the sum of $1, the congregation acquired a sixty-five foot strip of land along the south edge of the church property from Major Holdings & Development Co. A new church was built within several feet of the old yellow brick one which was removed; the date on the cornerstone is 1980. The 150th Anniversary of the construction of the first meeting house is to be celebrated in 1993.

Stauffer. - Pre. Noah Stauffer was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Feb. 13, 1842; died in his late home in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 20, 1928; aged 86 y 3 m. 7 d., of the infirmities of age and pneumonia. Barbara Betzner, wife of Pre. Noah Stauffer, was born near Breslau, Ont., Dec. 19, 1844; died in Waterloo, Ont., May 22, 1928 (twenty-nine hours after the departure of her husband) of the infirmities of her age, aged 83 y. 5 m. 3 d. Brother Stauffer was the only survivor of a family of four brothers and four sisters. There remain of sister Stauffer's family, of half-brother and sisters; Moses, Aaron, and Samuel Betzner. Mrs. Aaron Cressman and Mrs. Ephraim Cressman. Of the immediate family of their children, all survive: Mrs. Ida Snyder (who resided with and cared for her parents for the past seven years) Obal Stauffer, and Jacob Stauffer. After a union of sixty years and six months, in which they shared the sorrows and joys in the labors of life, and engaged in the service of the Lord for nearly fifty-two years, blessed with joy of Christian labor and fellowship they laid down their life together to enter the long expected, and earnestly looked for, rest of the servants of the Lord. Brother Stauffer was ordained to the ministry if the Mennonite Church for the Strassburg congregation, near the place of his birth, Nov. 9 1876, by bishops Joseph Hagey, Amos Cressman, and Abram Martin. Early in his ministry he was active in building up the Church, in strengthening the spiritual life of the membership. In company with the ministering brethren - Solomon Gehman, Jacob Gingerich, and Joseph Nahrgang - evangelistic services were conducted in the homes of the brotherhood in Christ, in evening services at which the unsaved were admonished to repentance and faith in Christ, and many were led to Christ in these first evening evangelistic efforts. Brother Stauffer is said to have preached the first English sermon in the Waterloo Mennonite congregation, at the Hagey Church, near Preston, Ont. His services were much in demand on account of his ability in this language. He was nominated for the office of bishop at least on three different occasions - at the ordination of Elias Weber, Jonas Snider, and Abram Gingerich. His labors and influence in the conference work were invaluable, and his counsels were deliberate and wholesome. In his duties and service for the Church in general his efforts were appreciated in the organization of the first evangelizing Board, organized at Elkhart, Indiana. He with Bro. Jonas Snider, were the Canadian representatives at the preliminary meeting leading to the organization of the General Conference. His heart was in the growth and progress of the Church. He labored constantly and faithfully for the young and the old in the kingdom of Christ as long as the Lord gave him strength. His labors are ended. His co-laborers will miss him, the Church will honor his memory, the Lord alone will reward His servant. Funeral services were conducted May 25, from the home, where brief services were conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine, and thence to the Waterloo Mennonite Church, services were conducted by the brethren, Jonas Snider, S. F. Coffman, and C. F. Derstine. An assembly which filled all the available space in the audience room, lobbies and basement, and some waiting outside the building, gave silent and impressive testimony to the esteem in which Brother and Sister Stauffer were held by the many who knew them. The remains were laid to rest side by side in the Mennonite cemetery. They wait the day of their resurrection, when they shall be like Him who redeemed them and for whose love they served their Lord and coming King.

Shantz. - Aaron Shantz was born near Haysville, Ont., May 27, 1839; died May 27, 1917; aged 78 y. He was twice married. On June 10, 1863, he was united in marriage with Barbara Nahrgang, which union was blessed with 5 daughters. After the decease of his first wife he was again married to Mary Biehn on Dec. 23, 1877. To this union were born 2 daughters. He is survived by a sorrowing widow, 7 daughters, 30 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 4 sisters and a host of relatives and friends. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. Funeral services were conducted by Bros. Osias Cressman and Manasseh Hallman at the Geiger Church, Waterloo, Ont. By a daughter.

Shantz.-Daniel Shantz was born in Wilmot Tp., Jan. 4, 1844; died at his home near Haysville, Ont., where he had spent the greater part of his life, Oct. 7, 1936; aged 92 y. 9 m. 3 d. On March 10, 1868, he was married to Mary Nahrgang, who preceded him in death 14 years ago. One daughter (Annie) also preceded him. He leaves 4 sons (Norman, Uzziah, Joseph and Simeon), 2 daughters (Ella-Mrs. E. Schmitt, and Clara-Mrs. J. Mackenzie), 4 sisters, 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. He united with the Mennonite Church in youth and remained a faithful member till death. He was blessed with good health and was seldom absent from church or Sunday school until the last year of his life, being bedfast the last few months. Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at the home and in Geiger Mennonite Church in charge of Bros. Manasseh Hallman, Henry King, and Moses H. Roth. Remains laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Hannah Shantz, wife of the late Daniel E. Cressman, died on Tuesday, March 5, 1940 in her 92nd year, at the home of her daughter (Mrs. Jacob Axt) with whom she had her home. She was born near Haysville, Ont., the eldest daughter of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz. In 1874 she was married to Daniel E. Cressman and lived for some years in Oxford county. After retiring from the farm they lived in New Hamburg until the death of her husband, after which she lived with her daughters. She is survived by 2 sons (Alvin of Ceylon, Sask,; and Joseph of Kitchener), 3 daughters (Mrs. Emanuel Schmitt of Baden, Mrs. Jacob Axt of Petersburg, and Mrs. Irvin Gimbel of Breslau), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Moses Cressman and Mrs. Ezra Cressman of New Hamburg). She was preceded in death by her daughter (Agnes) in 1917 and her husband in 1925, also by 7 brothers and 2 sisters. She was a faithful member of the Biehn Mennonite Church for many years and was interested in all her activities. In her latter years she often expressed her desire to go home and after a brief illness this wish was realized. The funeral services were in charge of Bros. L. H. Witmer, Orphen Wismer, and M. H. Roth at the Biehn Mennonite Church. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

"The death of Mrs. Susan Schafer, 86, occurred at her residence, 79 Brubacher street, last evening. She had been ill only a few days.

Deceased was born in Wilmot Tp. on July 6, 1850, a d/o the late Joseph Y.Shantz and wife, the late Elizabeth Stauffer. She was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church and of the Mission Circle. Deceased was twice married,in 1877 to the late Noah Bean, and in 1912 to the late John Schafer, who died in 1908 and 1923 respectively.

Mrs. Schafer is survived by two sons and four daughters, Simon Bean, Ceylon, Sask., Warren Bean, New Dundee, Mrs. William Crosley, Woolseley, Sask., Mrs. Earl Drewery, Stouffville, Miss Elizabeth Bean and Miss Sue Bean of Kitchener. Sudden Death of Waterloo County Farmers

The sudden deaths of two well known Waterloo County farmers occurred on Friday, when Solomon Shantz, a Wilmot Township man living about a mile south of Wilmot Centre dropped dead while hitching up his horse. He had been quite well. He suffered an attack of heart failure.
The deceased was 65 years of age. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at 1: 30 from the residence to Geiger's church and cemetery.

He resided near Haysville, Ontario, for several years where he was engaged in farming. In 1886 he entered the ministry of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ denomination, for which body he was an ardent laborer until lately when he, owing to failing health, had to quit preaching for a short time. At present he is engaged as an evangelist, assisting in the tabernacle work. He resides on his farm again and has a family of seven children".

Shantz.-Noah S., youngest son of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., on May 16, 1859; died at his home in Baden, Ont., May 7, 1936. He was in his 77th year. He had been in failing health for some time, and while he was able to be around, his death came suddenly, due to a heart attack. On March 6, 1883, he was united in marriage to Susannah B. Cassel, also of Wilmot Twp. After their marriage they moved to their homestead farm where they resided until thirteen years ago when they took up their residence in the village of Baden, Ont. This union was blessed with 11 children, 6 of whom have predeceased him. Those surviving are his wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters (Laura, wife of Tobias Shantz of Waterloo; Marian, wife of Reuben Steiner of Lima, Ohio; Lincoln C. of Kitchener; Walter C. on the old homestead; Dr. Stauffer C., also of Kitchener), 10 grandchildren, 1 brother, 4 sisters, and a host of friends. In the winter of 1886 he with his companion confessed Christ as their personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church to which faith he remained true to the end. He was a member of the Blenheim congregation and served as an officer of the Sunday school for a number of years and was at the time of his death a member of the board of trustees. The funeral was held May 10, with services at his home and also at the Blenheim Mennonite Church, conducted by M. H. Shantz, assisted by M. Hallman. Text, I Pet. 1: 3-5. Cressman.--Elizabeth, daughter of the late Jos. Y. Schantz, died July 11, 1946, in her eighty-fifth year. In her youth she accepted Christ and united with the Mennonite Church, to which she remained true to the end. In 1881 she was married to Moses M. Cressman, a deacon, who predeceased her eight years ago. Surviving are 2 sons (Ivan and Addis), one daughter (Mrs. Zenas Snyder), and one sister (Mrs. Louisa Cressman). she was an invalid for the last several years of her life. Funeral services were held at her late home and at the Biehn Mennonite Church, New Hamburg, Ont., in charge of M. H. Hallman and C. C. Cressman.

Cressman. --- Louisa, daughter of the late Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., in 1865; passed away June 20, 1950; aged 85 y. In 1886 she was married to Ezra Cressman, who preceded her in death. She and her husband were residents of Wilmot Twp., their entire lifetime, having farmed for many years. Soon after marriage she became a Christian and joined the Biehn Mennonite Church, where she continued as an active member until her passing. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Their home was blessed with 3 sons (Leander and Howard, who predeceased her, and Curtis, a bishop in the Mennonite Church, who resides on the home farm). She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She and her husband established a family altar so that the family might worship the Lord together as the children grew up. She had comparatively good health until a month before her death, when she suffered a stroke. Funeral services were conducted June 23 at the home and at the Biehn Church by Manasseh Hallman and M. H. Roth. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church.

SNYDER. - Veronica Shantz was born Jan. 5, 1843. She was married to John K. Snyder March 26, 1861. To this union were born 11 children (Ephraim, Ervin, Barbara, Emmanuel, Annie, Mary Ann, David, Veronica, Dilman, Herman, and Olivia). Emmanuel and David predeceased her. She died at her home in Wilmot Tp., Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 22, 1935; aged 92 y. 10 m. 17 d. She leaves 9 children, 26 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers (David, Stauffer, and Herman Shantz), and a host of relatives and friends. She was one of the pioneers in the community in which she lived. They started their home in the woods, doubtless with many hardships, but as the years rolled by they were able to build up a nice comfortable home. In this same home she lived 74 years amid all the changes that come in life. Oct. 23, 1900, she was bereft of her husband and she lived a widow's life with her family for 35 years. She was a good mother, "a mother in Israel," always willing to do for others. She was wonderfully blessed with health and strength until the last few years of her life. Her thinking capacity, and finally her bodily strength began to fail, and for only two weeks she was confined to her bed-without sickness or pain, just faded away until she peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Funeral services were conducted at the home of Dilman Snyder on Nov. 26 by Bro. Orphen Wismer, and at the Shantz Church near Baden, Ont., by Bro. Jonas Snyder (Text, Prov. 22: 28) and Bro. Manasseh Hallman (Text, Jno. 17: 24), where a large number of people gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Mary Ann Shantz, beloved wife of Wendell Shantz, was born near Baden, Ont., July 31, 1846; died Feb. 13, 1924; aged 76 y. 6 m. 12 d. She was married to Wendell Shantz, Nov. 28, 1870. This union was blessed with ten children of whom 2 sons and 2 daughters preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 17 grandchildren, 3 brothers, and 1 sister.Four years ago they observed their golden wedding anniversary with their family and relatives. In December, 1922, she was stricken with paralysis and was rendered almost helpless for 14 months until the message came, "Come home." Funeral services were conducted Feb. 16 by Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman. Text, Psa. 27: 10. Interment in the Shantz cemetery.

Shantz -- Stauffer L Shantz, of Baden, Ont., son of the late David Y. and Barbara (Stauffer) Shantz was born Jan. 24, 1862; died after a lingering illness, Dec. 31, 1938; aged 76 y. 11 m. 7 d. On March 6, 1894, he was married to Magdalena Snyder of Natchez. On Feb. 9, 1932, his beloved wife passed away. On Oct. 2, 1935, he was again married to Mrs. Alberta Bowman of Kitchener, who survives to mourn his departure; also 2 brothers (David S., of Waterloo and Herman S., of Wilmot), and a host of relatives and friends. During his illness he was baptized and we trust he is resting in peace. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 3 at the Shantz Church by E. O. Seymour, pastor of Trinity United Church, Kitchener, assisted by Bishop Manassah Hallman. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

SNIDER. SUSANNAH, daughter of the late Simon SHANTZ, and widow of the late Solomon Snider, was born Apr. 6, 1846; died in Waterloo Co., Ont., at the home of Oliver D. Snider, Dec. 30, 1932; aged 86 y. 8 m. 22 d. She was married to Solomon Snider in October, 1897, who predeceased her 3 years ago, 1 daughter Angeline (Mrs. Jacob Musselman) also predeceased her. She leaves 4 children (Mrs. Alvin Shantz, Addison and Oliver of Elmira, and Irvin of Guernsey, Sask.), 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren by her foster family relation. The funeral took place from the home of Oliver D. Snider to Elmira Mennonite Church for services where she was a faithful member. Burial in adjoining cemetery. "Shantz.-Death came as a welcome relief to Bro. Jonathan. Shantz of Carstairs, Alta., who passed away Dec. 14, 1914; aged 65 y. 8 m. 28 d. The deceased was born March 16, 1849, in Waterloo Co. Ont., where he grew to manhood and on Oct. 27, 1876, was married to Caroline Bingeman. To this union were born 9 children, 2 of them having died while quite young. The remaining ones are in the immediate vicinity and at home. In 1901 he moved with his family to a farm near Carstairs, Alberta, where he has since resided to the time of his death. He has been a member of the Mennonite Church for quite a number of years, and when health permitted was seldom missing at the regular services.

Funeral services conducted by N. R. Weber, J. K. Lehman, and N. B. Stauffer, on Dec. 16 at the West Zion Church, near Carstairs, Alta."

Jonathan Shantz's Dam.

In reference to the general topography of the village of Winterbourne in my last letter I omitted mention of the dam which confines the waters of Cox's Creek. It is the property of Mr. Jonathan Shantz, and contributes the power that operates his saw mill and chopping machine. It is undoubtedly one of the largest confined bodies of water in Waterloo county. The village derives advantages from it in more ways than one. While it adds considerably to the picturesqueness of the village it affords good fishing for the inhabitants thereof when the season is on. In the spring it is alive with chubs, suckers, red fins and bass. The latter abound in large number and many are often caught weighing from three to four pounds. Its generous owner permits free access to it by the public, and consequently the average villager whose beef or pork supply has become diminished or who feels the want of a change from that sort of diet can in a short time with hook and line procure choice specimens for the frying pan. The law prohibiting the catching of bass at this season of the year was the only obstacle that prevented your correspondent from making the attempt to land a few of the big fellows to form a savory feast for the table of the editor of the CHRONICLE.

In addition to this advantage afforded to the village Mr. Shantz is the most prominent in giving it some industrial life. He was born near St. Jacobs, March 16, 1849, and is a son of Simon Shantz, Sr. When he was about a year old his parents moved from his birth place to Wilmot where they lived about 45 years He purchased the saw mill here in 1895 from his brother Ezra, who had purchased it from one David Clemens, and has since added a cider and chopping mill. The saw will has a capacity of producing about 8,000 feet of lumber per day, the chopper 200 bags per day and the cider mill about 2,000 gallons per day. He also owns a farm of twenty acres near the village, from which he derives plenty of the necessaries of life for his family. He has been in some way connected in the operation of a saw-mill since he was fourteen years of age, and it is altogether likely that he will follow that vocation as long as he lives, or at least while the timber continues to hold out. Mr. Shantz was married about twenty-two years ago to Miss Caroline, daughter of Mr. John Bingeman, of near Washington, Nine children have been born to them, two of whom are dead. They are of the Mennonite faith and Reform in politics. The family lives in one of the venerable landmarks of the village. It is the old stone tavern which was built in 1836 by the late John Tyson, who was its landlord for two or three years and afterwards was kept by Henry Wenglin and others. It was a famous resort for the travelling public years ago. It is a substantial stone structure, but save its convenient location near the public highway, it does not show signs of having once been a public house. Mr. Shantz is a popular citizen and a man entitled to the respect and esteem of all who meet him or have business transactions with him.

Mr. J. S. Shantz, aged 83, passed away at his home, Fisher's Mills, on Sunday, Oct. 1. Mr. Shantz was a widely known citizen and one deeply interested in religion and philanthropic activities. There survive two sons and one daughter, Edwin of Hespeler, Junia at home and Mrs. Sydney Shantz of Kitchener. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3rd, from his home at Fisher's Mills. Rev. S. M. Kanagy of Blair and Bishop C. F. Derstine, Kitchener, officiated. The remains were interred in Wanner's cemetery. Casket bearers were Moses B. Shantz, Kitchener; Lyndere Shantz, New Hamburg; Moses Bowman, New Dundee; Gordon Snyder, Kitchener; Fred Snyder, Waterloo; Edward Snyder, Preston.

Shantz.-Simon Stauffer Shantz was born near Baden, Ont., Oct. 8, 1856. In 1887 he was married to Carolina Christener. Their family consisted of four sons, one having preceded him to the glory world. During a period of extended illness he saw the necessity of being right with God. On March 15, he accepted Christ as his Savior and was received into the Church by water baptism. During his short Christian experience he gave definite evidence of forgiven sins and peace with God. He passed to his eternal reward on March 23, 1926, aged 69 y. 5 m. 15 d. He is survived by his sorrowing companion and three sons. Funeral service at the Geiger Church, in charge of Brethren Manasseh Hallman and Curtis C. Cressman. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Daniel R. Stauffer

One of the most prominent residents of the Township of Blenheim, passed away at his home near Chesterfield on Tuesday morning, March 1st, in the person of Mr. Daniel R. Stauffer at the age of 80 years. He suffered a paralytic stroke about two years ago and had since been confined to his home. The late Mr. Stauffer was born on the farm where he died and had spent practically all his life there. He took an active part in public matters, being for many years on the Blenheim Township Council as Reeve and a member of the Oxford County Council. He was also secretary of the Bright Cheese and Butter Company for many years. The deceased was well known in insurance circles of this district having held the position of secretary treasurer of the North Blenheim Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company for many years. This position he relinquished only recently owing to his illness. He was a man of outstanding qualities and integrity and was well and favorably known throughout the district. He was one of the pillars of the Chesterfield United Church and very active in religious matters. His wife predeceased him 11 years ago, but he leaves four sons and one daughter, Irvin, of Saskatchewan, Ernest, of Chesterfield, Ormond, of London, Daniel Jr. on the homestead and Mrs. Clifford Woolcott, of Chesterfield. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. J. S. Betzner, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Jas. Ferguson, of Bright, and Mrs. Peter Hallman of Plattsville. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon from his late home to the Chesterfield United Church and Cemetery.

Following a one-month illness, Mrs. Peter C. Hallman, 85, died today at her home in Plattsville. She was the former Eliza Stauffer, d/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Stauffer, and was born Oct. 6, 1866, one mile west of Plattsville. Her marriage to Peter Hallman, who survives, took place March 5, 1890. She was the last surviving member of her family. One son, Clarence, RR2 Bright, also survives.

Ida, daughter of Bro. and Sister Noah Stauffer, was born at Strassburg, Ont., Aug. 9, 1868; died at her home in Waterloo, Ont., Feb.5, 1966; aged 97 y. 5 m. 27 d. She was married to Jacob Snider, who died in 1947. Surviving are 3 sons (Howard, Norman, and Willard), one daughter (Mrs. Erma Nissley), 22 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. One son and 3 daughters preceded her in death. She was a member of the Erb Street congregation. Funeral services were held at Waterloo, in charge of J. B. Martin, assisted by Milton Schwartzentruber.

Ida Stauffer Snider
1868 - 1966

Ida Stauffer Snider's life spanned almost a century. She was born a year after Confederation (1867), the birth of the Canadian nation, and died a year before its centennial. She had leadership and organizational abilities, but few women in the Mennonite Church were given the opportunity to use such gifts in her day. When the Mennonite women in Waterloo saw a need and responded creatively to it, Ida was there to lead the way.

Ida Stauffer was born in Strasburg, south of the village of Berlin (now Kitchener) on August 8, 1868. Her parents were Noah and Barbara (Betzner) Stauffer. In 1887 Ida was married to Jacob Snider, and they began to farm just west of the village of Waterloo. They were members of the Waterloo Mennonite Church, which became known as Erb Street Mennonite Church after building a new meetinghouse at the edge of town in 1902.

In 1907 two young women from the Waterloo area had joined the staff of the newly established Mennonite Mission in Toronto - Lena Weber and Bernice Devitt. Through the Mission, the Waterloo Mennonites hosted a number of "Fresh Air" children in their homes. This was a program whereby children from the inner city were hosted by rural or farm families for a week or two in the summer. Noting the poor clothing which some of these children were wearing, some of the women from Erb Street met to sew new clothes for them. They decided this was such a good cause that they should do it on a regular basis, for which they should have a more formal organization. The women, aware of the expected procedure, first approached Bishop Jonas Snider for approval, which was granted.

The first organizational meeting took place in June and was held at the Berlin Orphanage. The women worked for the orphanage that day and made a few items for the Toronto Mission as well. They elected Mrs. Jacob Snider (Ida) as President, Mrs. M.S. Weber (Lena Weber's mother) as vice president and Lena Weber (who by this time was back from Toronto) as secretary-treasurer, and also appointed a buying committee. They drew up the list of rules and regulations and chose the name "Charity Circle."

Ida served as president for the first two years. The next four years she was vice-president. Then she was on the buying committee for a few years, and for at least a year had no office. In 1917 Ida was again elected president, which office she held until the annual meeting in 1929. From then on she still served on the buying or quilt-patch cutting committees for another decade. The work of the Charity Circle was always a very important part of her life.

Ida retired from the Ontario Sewing Circle Executive and from the presidency of the Charity Circle when she was 61. People remember her as a good organizer. A granddaughter recalls her grandmother's straight and upright figure. She reminded her of Queen Mary. Ida died on May 2, 1966 at the age of 98. She had witnessed many changes, and incorporated them into a life of usefulness.

Partial Obituary

Word has been received here of the death of Jacob B. Stauffer at Edmonton, Sat. Mr. Stauffer, formerly of near Doon, was a brother of Mrs. Jacob S. Snider, Waterloo. He was 67 years old. Mr. Stauffer went to Western Canada about 35 years ago, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for some years. He was a s/o the late Rev. and Mrs. Noah Stauffer. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Charles of Edmonton, and Walter of Calgary, one daughters, Mrs. S. A. McNeil of St. Catharines, one sister, Mrs. Snider, Waterloo and one brother, Obal Stauffer, Vancouver. The funeral will be held at Edmonton tomorrow.

In 1897 her husband was ordained to the ministry and she was a faithful companion to him in his work. Always ready to lend a helping hand and ready at all times to share with her husband the joys and sorrows, the burdens and experiences that come with those who are called to service. In 1908 she with her husband and family moved to Guernsey, Sask., where they lived and labored for the Lord until May of 1936 when they again returned east and settled in Waterloo Co. She leaves her husband, 2 sons (Chester of Meteor, Sask., and David of Guernsey, Sask.), and 5 daughters (Ada, wife of George Hawes; Mary, wife of Herbert Kehl; Leona, wife of Leighton Schmitt, also of Guernsey; and Clista and Alda at home). One daughter (Bessie) predeceased her. There are also 15 grandchildren and 6 sisters. Funeral services on May 12 with Bro. M.H. Roth at the home and Brethren M. Hallman and M.H. Mrs. Abraham Good

Mrs. Abraham Good of RR 2, Petersburg, died Friday at her home. She was 93.

The former Barbara Shantz, she was born at Haysville, April 17, 1875 and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. Aaron Shantz. She was the last surviving member of the family.

She was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church and the Women s Mission Society of the church.

She was predeceased by her husband, in 1963 and her daughter, Irene, in 1955. Surviving are five sons, Cranson and Aaron, both of RR 2, Petersburg, Oliver of New Hamburg, Eden and Laverne, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Viola, at home, and Olive of Kitchener and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Geiger Mennonite Church, Rev. Lester Bauman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Shantz, Elizabeth, daughter of Aaron and Mary (Beihu) Shantz, was born Oct. 15, 1880; died Jan. 28, 1952; aged 71 y. 3m. 13 d. At the age of 16 she accepted Christ as her Saviour during one of John S. Coffman's revival meetings, uniting with the Mennonite Church to which vows she remained loyal through life. In December, 1905, she was married to Joshua Nahrgang, who predeceased her Dec. 31, 1908. Her son, Wilfred Nahrgang, also predeceased her in 1945. On March 3, 1914, she married Noah Shantz, who survives her. Four sisters (Mrs. Rudy Roth, New Hamburg, Ont.; Mrs. Abram Cressman, Plattsville, Ont.; Mrs. Abram Good, Baden, Ont.; and Mrs. Abram Snyder, Waterloo, Ont.) also survive her. Funeral services were conducted by the Belnheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee, Ont., Jan. 30, by Curtis Cressman and Moses Bowman. Burial was made in the Detwiler Cemetery near Roseville, Ont.

UZZIAH SHANTZ

A well-known Strasburg farmer for the past 35 years, Uzziah Shantz, 73, died August 18 at his home at Strasburg after a brief illness

Born June 11, 1875, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Shantz. He was a member of Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Soloman (Grace) Bowman, of Floradale, and Mrs. Tobias (Erma) Bowman, of Lexington. and a son Leonard, of Parkway.

Two brothers survive, Norman of Haysville; Simeon, of New Hamburg; and two sisters. Mrs. Ephriam Schmidt, of Baden. and Mrs. Clara Mackenzie. of Kitchener. Five grand-children also survive.

he funeral service was held from his home at Parkway at 2 p.m. Sunday to Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg, for services at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Simon Martin, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

SCHMITT.-On Feb. 13, 1907, Sister Anna Schmitt (Nee Shantz), beloved wife of Ephraim Schmitt, peacefully passed away near Baden, Ont., aged 27 y. 2 m. 15 d. She was ill the last three months and at times hopes of recovery were entertained, but on Feb. 13, she died of septicaemia. She leaves a sorrowing husband and one child. They lived in matrimony three years. She lived an exemplary Christian life and was loved by all who knew her, and we have reason to believe that our loss is her gain. Funeral services were held at the Shantz meeting house on Feb. 16, where she was laid to rest. Services conducted in German from II Cor. 5: 1, by O. M. Cressman and in English from Phil. 1: 21, by J. B. Smith.

Joseph Shantz - Baden

Joseph Shantz, 60, of R.R. 2 New Hamburg , died at his home yesterday afternoon following a lengthy illness. Born in Wilmot Township, a son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Daniel Shantz, he was a well known district farmer. He was a member of the Geiger Mennonite Church. Besides his wife, the former Lydia Snyder, two sons, Vernon of Victoriaburg and Wayne of Baden, and to daughters, Louise and Alice at home, survive. Here brothers, Norman and Simeon of Haysville and Uzziah of Strasburg and two sisters, Mrs. Ephraim Schmidt and Mrs. John McKenzie of Baden and one grandchild also survive. A sister Annie, died 34 years ago. The remains will be held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 7 o'clock tonight when removal will be made to the residence near Baden until 1: 30 p.m. Monday. The funeral with Rev. Moses Roth officiating will be held at the Geiger Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Joseph Shantz

A lifelong and well known resident of Wilmot Township, Mr. Joseph Shantz, passed away at his home east of Wilmot Centre on Friday, May 15, aged 60 years. He had been ill for some time and two months ago sold his farm, stock and implements, owing to poor health.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Shantz, pioneer residents of the district. He was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church.

Besides his wife, the former Lydia Snyder, he is survived by two sons, Vernon, Victoriaburg, Wayne, Baden, two daughters, Louise and Alice, at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Norman and Simeon Shantz, of Haysville, Ussiah, Strasburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Eph. Schmidt, and Mrs. John McKenzie, Baden, and one grandchild.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home to Geiger Mennonite Church for service, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Moses Roth conducted the funeral service, which was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

Joseph, son of the late Daniel and Mary (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., on Dec. 30, 1881, and lived in the said township his entire lifetime. He passed away at his home near Baden, Ont., on May 15, 1942; aged 60 y. 4 m. 15 d. Bro. Shantz had been in failing health for some time, but was not confined to the house until the last several weeks before his death. He was a faithful member of the Geiger Mennonite congregation near Baden for the past 45 years. His place at church was seldom vacant. During his last illness he expressed his desire to go Home. On Feb. 8, 1911, he was married to Lydia Snider who survives him with four children: Vernon of Petersburg, Wayne of Baden, and Louise and Alice, at home. There also remain: 1 granddaughter, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters: Norman and Simeon of Haysville, Uzziah of Strasburg, Mrs. Ephraim Schmitt and Mrs. John McKenzie of Baden. One sister, Annie, predeceased him 34 years ago. Funeral services were held at the home by Bro. M. Hallman and then at the Geiger Mennonite Church, where the Bros. C. C. Culp of Brethren, Mich., and M. H. Roth spoke from the texts found in John 14:1-7 and Matt. 5:12a. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

For the last number of years her health had been failing and, amid trials and suffering, God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to take her to her eternal rest. She will be greatly missed in the home, church, and community, - above all, in the home. She was a real" mother in Israel," always ready to help wherever she could. Surviving are 4 sons and 1 daughter (Clinton of Baden, Lorne of Wilmot, Harry of Buffalo, Roy of Princeton, and Marion - Mrs. Wallace Thibideau) on the homestead, 11 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 4 sisters, and many other relatives and friends. One son died in infancy. Sister Habel accepted Christ in her youth and was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church at Geigers for 43 years, where her presence and help will be missed, but she has gone to be with her Lord, which is better. She had been in failing health for a few years, but a paralytic stroke was the immediate cause of her death. The funeral services were held March 24 from her home to Geiger's Mennonite Church in Charge of Bros. Moses H. Roth, assisted by the brethren C.C. Cressman and Jonas Snider. Text, Heb. 9: 27. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. John E. Bingeman Passes Suddenly

Seized by a heart attack, Mrs. John E. Bingeman passed away very suddenly at 9.30 o'clock on Wednesday night at her home on Jacob Street. The news of her death came as a distinct shock to her family and many friends. She was in her 65th year.
The late Mrs. Bingeman, nee Judith Shantz, was born in Wilmot Township near Haysville, a daughter of the late Solomon Shantz and Marian Hostetler. She was married in March 1899, to John E. Bingeman and they resided on the Shantz homestead for several years, later moving to Haysville. The deceased came with her husband and their family to New Hamburg in 1911. During her residence here, Mrs. Bingeman was an active worker in the local Evangelical Church. She was president of the Women's Missionary Society of that church at the time of her death, and was also a member of the Ladies' Aid Society.
Her husband, a former reeve of New Hamburg, and an ex-warden of Waterloo County, predeceased her in January, 1940. One son, Earl, was drowned at Port Dover in 1936 and a daughter died in infancy.
The surviving members of the family are Edith, Reg.N., in the Hamilton General Hospital; Mrs. Harry Barnes (Vera), New Hamburg; Mrs. Homer Watson (Marion), Moncton, N.B.; Harold and Stanley, Woodstock; Lloyd, Buffalo, N.Y.; Nile, London, and Perlus and Jack, St. Thomas. Also surviving are one brother, Eph. Shantz, Haysville, and three sisters, Mrs. Titus Kolb, Kitchener; Mrs. Jos. Salzman, Petersburg, and Mrs. Frank Miller of Millersburg, Ohio. There are also 11 grandchildren.
The remains are resting at her late home until 1 p.m., on Saturday after which they will rest at Zion Evangelical Church where the funeral service will be held at 2.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Internment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. Clayton Becker will be in charge

Shantz - Bishop Moses H. Shantz, eldest son of the late Solomon and Mary Ann (Hostetler) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., Sept. 10, 1884; died at his home near New Dundee, Ont., Aug. 14, 1938; aged 53 y. 11 m. 4 d. He had been under medical care for a few years, due to a heart ailment. This became more severe during the last few weeks, and was the cause of his sudden passing on Sunday morning.

He was converted and was received into the fellowship of the Church at the age of fourteen. Oct. 13, 1907, he was ordained a minister, and pastor of the Blenheim congregation. Besides being actively engaged in pastoral work in these thirty years, he also served the Church in many other positions. He was elected Moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario for ten consecutive years, from 1922 to 1932. He also served as President of the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario for several years after its organization in 1929. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of the Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

In 1933 he was elected Vice-President of the Mennonite Publication Board, and two years later became President of this organization, which position he occupied at the time of his death. On Sunday, July 24, 1938, he was ordained a bishop in the Mennonite Conference of Ontario, his especial charge being the congregation at Clarence Center, N. Y.

On March 4, 1908, he was married to Catherine Martin of Elmira, Ont. They lived on his farm south of Haysville until 1923, when they moved to their present residence opposite the Blenheim Church near New Dundee. There survive to mourn his passing, his wife, 1 son (Gordon), and 2 daughters (Luella and Mary). One son (Vernon) predeceased him in 1911. There also remain 1 brother (Ephraim of Haysville) and 4 sisters (Mrs. John E. Bingaman of New Hamburg, Mrs. Titus L. Kolb of Kitchener, Mrs. Jos. Saltzman of Petersburg, and Mrs. Frank Miller of Millersburg, O.). One sister (Mrs. Conrad Hebel) passed away several months ago.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 17, and was largely attended, over one thousand people being present from many communities to pay tribute to the passing of a brother, a friend, and a fellow worker. The funeral service was in charge of Bishop S. F. Coffman. The service at the house was conducted by Bishops M. Hallman and M. H. Roth. The Brethren, Silas Weldy of Indiana and Jesse Short of Ohio, conducted the devotional at the church. Bro. D. A. Yoder of Elkhart, Ind., preached the funeral sermon. Text, I Cor. 15: 24-27. A few words of tribute were given by Bros. A. J. Metzler of Scottdale, Pa., and Oscar Burkholder of Breslau. Closing prayer was offered by Bishop Jonas Snider. Shantz, Moses H. (1884-1938)

Moses H. Shantz: church leader and farmer; born 10 September 1884 near Haysville, Ontario to Solomon and Mary Ann (Hostetler) Shantz. He was the oldest in a family of two sons and five daughters. On 4 March 1908 he married Catherine Martin (9 March 1885-4 December 1974) of Elmira, Ontario. They had two sons (one died in 1911) and two daughters. Moses died 14 August 1938 of a heart attack at his home across from the Blenheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee, Ontario.

Moses Shantz was a farmer by vocation, working the home farm until 1923. The family then moved to the farm where he died. He was baptized in 1898, and was immediately active in the Sunday school and Bible Conferences of the day. He was among the first class of students in the Ontario Mennonite Bible School in early 1907 and on 13 October 1907 was ordained as a minister for the Blenheim Mennonite Church, his home congregation. On 24 July 1938 he was ordained as a bishop, particularly to serve the congregation at Clarence Center, New York. However he died before he was able to make any visits as bishop to that congregation.

As was common for his day, Shantz did not have much formal education, though he had a life-long interest in reading. His personality was empathetic, an asset in his pastoral relationships. He had a good memory for names, and related easily to persons of many backgrounds. His preaching style was "heart to heart" rather than "sermonizing." A co-worker, S. F. Coffman , described Shantz as "a remarkable helper to others on account of his deeply sympathetic nature. He could enter into their problems with understanding and appreciation; he felt with them their burdens and and their sorrows; then, with the most kindly manner, he led them to wise decisions and to the comfort of Christian attitudes in all of their problems."

His administrative gifts led Moses H. Shantz to numerous leadership roles both in his area conference and within the larger Mennonite Church. He served as moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario from 1922-1932, and again from 1934-1936. From 1932-1934 he was assistant moderator. He became Vice-President of the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario in 1929 when missions activity within the conference was reorganized, and he served in that role until 1936. In his active promotion of mission work, Shantz traveled often to the mission stations. He also served on the oversight board for the Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

Within the denomination Shantz served on the Canadian Section of the Peace Problems Committee, and a number of times on the Committee on Arrangements for General Conference. In 1933 he was elected as Vice-President of the Mennonite Publication Board, and in 1935 became President of that Board, serving until his death.

Moses H. Shantz suffered health (heart) problems in his later years, and his premature death removed a calm, mediating voice from the Ontario Mennonite scene at a time when fractious doctrinal issues created tension within the conference. His stature in the Mennonite community is indicated by the number of persons who attended his funeral -- over one thousand in all, including visitors from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York.

Ephraim Shantz Passes At K-W Hospital
Ephraim Shantz, well known local resident, passed away at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital last Saturday at the age of 69 years. Mr. Shantz had been confined to hospital for nearly two weeks before his passing. He was a son of the late Solomon Shantz and the former Maryanne Hostetler and was born in Wilmot township. Prior to his retirement some ten years ago he had farmed in Wilmot Township. He was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church, New Hamburg. Mr. Shantz was actively interested in local sports and was a member of the New Hamburg Turf Association as well as the New Hamburg Board of trade. Surviving are his wife, the former Edna Weber, whom he married in 1916; two sisters, Mrs. Titus (Priscilla) Kolb, Kitchener; and Mrs. Frank (Susan) Miller of Millersburg, Ohio. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from Zion Evangelical UB Church, with internment in Riverside cemetery. Rev. M. E. Reuber was in charge of the service. Pallbearers were Messrs. Jack Bingeman, Roy Habel, Gordon Shantz, Hugh Shantz, Robert Weber and Kenneth Weber.

PETERSBURG - Mrs. Joseph Salzman, 63, a resident of Victoriaburg, RR 2, Petersburg, died yesterday at her home. She was the former Mable Shantz, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Shantz. She was born at Haysville, Aug. 21, 1889, and was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden. Surviving are her husband; four sons, Sanford and Clifford of Kitchener and Florian and Marcel of Petersburg; two daughters, Mrs. William (Gladys) Ramseyer of Baden and Miss Ruth of Petersburg; one brother, Ephraim of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Priscilla Kolb of Kitchener and Mrs. Frank Miller of Millersburg, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren. A brother and two sisters died before her. The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until tomorrow at 9 a.m. when it will be removed to the home in Victoriaburg. The death of Elton Christner took place on Sunday last at his home west of the town, after an illness with diphtheria of a week's duration. He had a very hard fight for his life, but in spite of all doctors could do, including an operation, he succumbed as states, at the age of 37 years.

Elton was well known and well liked throughout the district, although he was of a quiet disposition in public, and his many young friends will miss him from their circles. He was born at New Hamburg, Ont., and came to Alberta about 17 years ago, with Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Rennie, his uncle and aunt, consequently he could be classed as an old-timer. His father and mother are both dead, but he leaves a wife at home, two full brothers, one in Kitchener, Ont., and the other in Minnesota, and a sister who lives at Plattsville, Ont., besides some step-brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. Mr. and Mrs. John Christner of Calgary is an uncle and aunt.

The funeral took place on Monday at Didsbury.

SHANTZ. -Eden, son of bro. Noah S. and Sister Susanna Shantz, died on March 29th 1898 in Wilmot Twp. , Waterloo Co. , Ont. , of appendicitis. He was born July 3rd, 1887 and was consequently in his eleventh year. He was a clever boy and beloved by all who knew him. A large concourse of friends, neighbors and acquaintances gathered at the funeral to sympathize with the bereaved parents, this being their fifth child in the glory world. The large gathering at the funeral in the Blenheim church on the 31st of March was addressed by Pre. Noah Stauffer in an earnest discourse from Psalms16: 6.

Cressman.- Ivan S., son of Moses and Elizabeth (Shantz) Cressman, was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Mar. 3, 1884; died at the K-W Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., Nov. 10, 1967; aged 83 y. 8 m. 7 d. On Sept. 22, 1909, he was married to Clara Shantz, who died Sept. 29, 1959. Surviving are one daughter (Myrtle), one brother (Addison S.), and one sister (Mrs. Effie Snyder). Cressman. Leander S., eldest son of Ezra and Louisa Cressman, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., Dec. 28, 1887. He met instant death on a railway crossing in Kitchener, Ont., July 4, 1932; aged 44 y. 6 m. 9 d. On Jan. 21, 1913, he was united in holy wedlock to Jessie R. Oliver. The union was blessed with six children: Margaret, Isabelle, James, Allen, Robert, and Marie. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, 3 daughters, father mother, and one brother, Curtis. His brother Howard predeceased him about 5 years ago. At the age of seventeen he confessed Christ and united with the Mennonite Church, to which faith he remained faithful till death. On Monday morning, July 4, he in company with his daughter Isabelle, left home to go to his work, and while entering the city of Kitchener the trolley car hurled him into eternity. Funeral services were held July 6, with services at the home by the pastor, M. H. Shantz, thence to Blenheim Mennonite Church where services were continued by M. H. Shantz, assisted by Moses Roth. Text II Cor. 5: 1. Interment in adjoining cemetery. A very large concourse of people had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect.

Bishop Curtiss C. Cressman

New Hamburg - Bishop Curtiss C. Cressman of RR 1, New Hamburg, died Wednesday at K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was 77.

Born May 31, 1894, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Cressman.

He farmed in Wilmot Township for many years and was bishop of the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church.

Bishop Cressman was predeceased by his first wife, the former Amanda Ethel Byler in 1956 and his second wife, the former Clarice Cressman in 1969; by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Strubhar in 1955; a son and a daughter in infancy, and two brothers.

Surviving are a son, Howard of RR 1, New Hamburg; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Lillian) Bean of New Dundee and Elsie Cressman, a missionary in Somali, Africa; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The body is at the Bruce A. Omand Funeral Home here until noon Friday when removal will be made to the church for service at 2 p.m. Rev. Earl Koch will officiate.

Burial will be in Biehn Mennonite cemetery, Wilmot Township.

Cressman.--Howard Cressman was born near New Hamburg, Ont., April 10, 1897; died where he was born on March 12, 1927; aged 29 y 11 m. 2 d. In Dec., 1924, he was united in marriage with Sister Ida Snyder, Hespeler, Ont., to which union was born one son. Just one week previous to his death he was taken seriously ill with pleuro-pneumonia and God saw best to take him home. During his illness he suffered severely and continuously, but he bore it all much patience and Christian fortitude. At the age of 14 he accepted Christ as his personal Savior, united with the Mennonite Church, and remained a faithful member to the end. In his untimely departure he leaves a sorrowing companion, one son (Keith), father, mother, two brothers (Leander and Curtis), besides a host of relatives and friends. In the home he will be greatly missed as an affectionate companion and a loving father. In the Church his service and counsel can no longer be personally given, but we bow to our heavenly Father, and from our heart's desire to say, "Thy will be done." Funeral services were held Mar. 14, from his late home to the Bean Church, and burial in the adjoining cemetery. Brethren Ozias Cressman, Manasseh Hallman, Moses Shantz, and Oscar Burkholder conducted the services. Text, Rev. 13: 14.

Ephriam S. Snyder, 88, died at his home in Baden on Tuesday. Born in Wilmot Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John K Snyder, he farmed north of Baden for many years. He was a life-long member of Shantz Mennonite Church. His marriage to Emma Horst took place in North Easthope in 1885. Surviving are three sons, Homer and Edgar, Baden; Harley of Glendale, Calif.; and three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Elmina) Holwell and Mrs. Clara Schmidt, both of Baden, and Mrs. Percy (Margaret) Hofstetter, Plattsville; three brothers, Irvin Snyder, Baden; Dilman Snyder, Waterloo, and Herman, North Easthope; four sisters, Mrs. Nelson (Barbara) Shantz, Miss Annie Snyder and Mrs. Noah (Fannie) Snyder of Waterloo, and Mrs. Elam (Olivia) Axt of New Hamburg. Twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 2.30 p.m. with private service at the home, followed by a public service at Shantz Mennonite Church at 3.00 p.m. with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. L. H. Witmer, pastor of the church will officiate.

Dilman S. Snyder, 83, of 125 Erb St. West, Waterloo, died Feb. 25 at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John K. Snyder and a native of Wilmot Township. He farmed at RR 2, Baden, until his retirement in 1946 and had lived in Waterloo for the past 14 years.

Mr, Snyder was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden.

He married Ida Weber in 1908 and she died in 1943. He married Nora Hunsberger in 1946 and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John W. of RR 2, Baden, and Ralph C. of Vineland; two daughters. Mrs. Clayton (Vera) Shantz and Mrs, LeRoy (Alice) Good of RR 2, Baden; a brother, Herman of Kitchener; three sisters, Mrs. Nelson (Barbara) Shantz of Elmira, Mrs. Noah (Veronica) Snyder and Annie of Waterloo, and 14 grandchildren. Two sisters and four brothers predeceased him.

She was received into church membership at the Shantz Church, Baden, Ont., and later transferred to Latschar, Mannheim, Ont., where she was a member until her death. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., July 15 in charge of John H. Hess, assisted by Osiah Horst and J. W. Witmer. Burial took place at the David Eby Cemetery in Waterloo, Ont.

SHANTZ, Mr. Manasseh\emdash On Friday, Nov. 2, 1979, Mr. Manasseh Shantz of Nithview, New Hamburg and formerly of Wilmot Township, aged 98 years. He was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church, Route 2, Baden.
Husband of the late Mrs. Louida (Cressman) Shantz. He is lovingly remembered by seven sons: Wilfred of St. Agatha, Nyal of Route 2, Baden, Armand of Kitchener, Robert of Route 2, Baden, Mahlon of Kitchener, Ion of Millbank, Arley of Petersburg and three daughters: Etta (Mrs. Lloyd Shantz) of Route 1, Waterloo, Ida (Mrs. Lloyd Schwartzentruber) of Waterloo and Esther (Mrs. Aaron Enns) of Kitchener. Also surviving are 36 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one sister, Florence Shantz of Kitchener. He was predeceased by his parents, the late Wendall Shantz and the former Mary Ann Shantz and one son Howard, six brothers and two sisters.
The late Mr. Shantz is resting at the Omand-Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, after 10 a.m. today and until noon Sunday, Nov. 4, when removal will be made to Shantz Mennonite Church, for service at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Leslie Witmer officiating. Interment to follow in church cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the church building fund or the Ontario Mennonite Mission Board.

"Florence and Salina Shantz ran a model household on Stirling Avenue in Kitchener and operated a dress and bonnet-making business to maintain themselves. Their home was a place of warmth for family and friends. They generously shared their gifts to clothe the needy, but with a flare of independence.

Salina, the older of the two sisters, was born on April 11, 1886 to Wendel and Mary Ann (Shantz) Shantz. The family lived on a farm on Erb Street, east of Philipsburg and attended the Shantz Mennonite Church.

Salina's health was rather delicate; so she stayed at home while her sisters were employed in homes in the neighbourhood.

In the early 1920s Mother Shantz suffered a stroke. Salina and Florence cared for her during the fourteen months in which she was bedfast. The doctor praised them for their excellent care, telling them they could qualify for nurses' degrees. When their father died in 1927, Salina and Florence moved to Kitchener.

IN BUSINESS

During the first ten years in the city, the Shantz sisters lived in various three-room apartments, engaging in sewing as best they could in such small space. Those were also the depression years, and work and resources were hard to find. Finally, in 1937, they built their own house on 11 Stirling Avenue North, their back yard adjoining First Mennonite Church's parking lot. They planned a large hall with sitting room for clients who were waiting to be served. There was a sewing room besides their own living quarters.....
