SHANTZ.- In Wilmot, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralysis, beloved wife of Joseph Y. Shantz. She lived to be over79 years of age. She lived in matrimony over 60 years, and leaves a loving husband, nine children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sister Shantz was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. In her last sickness she bore her affliction with Christian fortitude. May her life long be remembered. Funeral services were held by Bro. E. S. Hallman, in English, from Rev.14: 13, and Bro. Amos Cressman, in German, from Phil. 1: 21, at Geiger's M. H., where her remains were laid to rest.

Shantz. - Aaron Shantz was born near Haysville, Ont., May 27, 1839; died May 27, 1917; aged 78 y. He was twice married. On June 10, 1863, he was united in marriage with Barbara Nahrgang, which union was blessed with 5 daughters. After the decease of his first wife he was again married to Mary Biehn on Dec. 23, 1877. To this union were born 2 daughters. He is survived by a sorrowing widow, 7 daughters, 30 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 4 sisters and a host of relatives and friends. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. Funeral services were conducted by Bros. Osias Cressman and Manasseh Hallman at the Geiger Church, Waterloo, Ont. By a daughter.

Shantz.-Daniel Shantz was born in Wilmot Tp., Jan. 4, 1844; died at his home near Haysville, Ont., where he had spent the greater part of his life, Oct. 7, 1936; aged 92 y. 9 m. 3 d. On March 10, 1868, he was married to Mary Nahrgang, who preceded him in death 14 years ago. One daughter (Annie) also preceded him. He leaves 4 sons (Norman, Uzziah, Joseph and Simeon), 2 daughters (Ella-Mrs. E. Schmitt, and Clara-Mrs. J. Mackenzie), 4 sisters, 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. He united with the Mennonite Church in youth and remained a faithful member till death. He was blessed with good health and was seldom absent from church or Sunday school until the last year of his life, being bedfast the last few months. Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at the home and in Geiger Mennonite Church in charge of Bros. Manasseh Hallman, Henry King, and Moses H. Roth. Remains laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Hannah Shantz, wife of the late Daniel E. Cressman, died on Tuesday, March 5, 1940 in her 92nd year, at the home of her daughter (Mrs. Jacob Axt) with whom she had her home. She was born near Haysville, Ont., the eldest daughter of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz. In 1874 she was married to Daniel E. Cressman and lived for some years in Oxford county. After retiring from the farm they lived in New Hamburg until the death of her husband, after which she lived with her daughters. She is survived by 2 sons (Alvin of Ceylon, Sask,; and Joseph of Kitchener), 3 daughters (Mrs. Emanuel Schmitt of Baden, Mrs. Jacob Axt of Petersburg, and Mrs. Irvin Gimbel of Breslau), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Moses Cressman and Mrs. Ezra Cressman of New Hamburg). She was preceded in death by her daughter (Agnes) in 1917 and her husband in 1925, also by 7 brothers and 2 sisters. She was a faithful member of the Biehn Mennonite Church for many years and was interested in all her activities. In her latter years she often expressed her desire to go home and after a brief illness this wish was realized. The funeral services were in charge of Bros. L. H. Witmer, Orphen Wismer, and M. H. Roth at the Biehn Mennonite Church. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

"The death of Mrs. Susan Schafer, 86, occurred at her residence, 79 Brubacher street, last evening. She had been ill only a few days.

Deceased was born in Wilmot Tp. on July 6, 1850, a d/o the late Joseph Y.Shantz and wife, the late Elizabeth Stauffer. She was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church and of the Mission Circle. Deceased was twice married,in 1877 to the late Noah Bean, and in 1912 to the late John Schafer, who died in 1908 and 1923 respectively.

Mrs. Schafer is survived by two sons and four daughters, Simon Bean, Ceylon, Sask., Warren Bean, New Dundee, Mrs. William Crosley, Woolseley, Sask., Mrs. Earl Drewery, Stouffville, Miss Elizabeth Bean and Miss Sue Bean of Kitchener. Sudden Death of Waterloo County Farmers

The sudden deaths of two well known Waterloo County farmers occurred on Friday, when Solomon Shantz, a Wilmot Township man living about a mile south of Wilmot Centre dropped dead while hitching up his horse. He had been quite well. He suffered an attack of heart failure.
The deceased was 65 years of age. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at 1: 30 from the residence to Geiger's church and cemetery.

In 1886 he entered the ministry of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ denomination, for which body he was an ardent laborer until lately when he, owing to failing health, had to quit preaching for a short time. Shantz.-Noah S., youngest son of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., on May 16, 1859; died at his home in Baden, Ont., May 7, 1936. He was in his 77th year. He had been in failing health for some time, and while he was able to be around, his death came suddenly, due to a heart attack. On March 6, 1883, he was united in marriage to Susannah B. Cassel, also of Wilmot Twp. After their marriage they moved to their homestead farm where they resided until thirteen years ago when they took up their residence in the village of Baden, Ont. This union was blessed with 11 children, 6 of whom have predeceased him. Those surviving are his wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters (Laura, wife of Tobias Shantz of Waterloo; Marian, wife of Reuben Steiner of Lima, Ohio; Lincoln C. of Kitchener; Walter C. on the old homestead; Dr. Stauffer C., also of Kitchener), 10 grandchildren, 1 brother, 4 sisters, and a host of friends. In the winter of 1886 he with his companion confessed Christ as their personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church to which faith he remained true to the end. He was a member of the Blenheim congregation and served as an officer of the Sunday school for a number of years and was at the time of his death a member of the board of trustees. The funeral was held May 10, with services at his home and also at the Blenheim Mennonite Church, conducted by M. H. Shantz, assisted by M. Hallman. Text, I Pet. 1: 3-5. Cressman.--Elizabeth, daughter of the late Jos. Y. Schantz, died July 11, 1946, in her eighty-fifth year. In her youth she accepted Christ and united with the Mennonite Church, to which she remained true to the end. In 1881 she was married to Moses M. Cressman, a deacon, who predeceased her eight years ago. Surviving are 2 sons (Ivan and Addis), one daughter (Mrs. Zenas Snyder), and one sister (Mrs. Louisa Cressman). she was an invalid for the last several years of her life. Funeral services were held at her late home and at the Biehn Mennonite Church, New Hamburg, Ont., in charge of M. H. Hallman and C. C. Cressman.

Cressman. --- Louisa, daughter of the late Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., in 1865; passed away June 20, 1950; aged 85 y. In 1886 she was married to Ezra Cressman, who preceded her in death. She and her husband were residents of Wilmot Twp., their entire lifetime, having farmed for many years. Soon after marriage she became a Christian and joined the Biehn Mennonite Church, where she continued as an active member until her passing. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Their home was blessed with 3 sons (Leander and Howard, who predeceased her, and Curtis, a bishop in the Mennonite Church, who resides on the home farm). She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She and her husband established a family altar so that the family might worship the Lord together as the children grew up. She had comparatively good health until a month before her death, when she suffered a stroke. Funeral services were conducted June 23 at the home and at the Biehn Church by Manasseh Hallman and M. H. Roth. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Bowman -- Hannah, daughter of the late Aaron and Barbara (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., on April 10, 1864; died Dec. 12, 1938, at her home near Haysville, Ont., in her 75th year. She had been in failing health for a number of years. On Oct. 30, 1883, she was married to Benjamin Bowman who predeceased her a little over two years ago. Sister Bowman was a faithful, active member of the Mennonite Church since her youth. Surviving are 3 sons (Weston of Toronto, Tobias of Kitchener, and Aaron on the homestead), 2 daughters (Mrs. Titus Rosenberger of Saskatchewan and Anna at home), 5 sisters, and 14 grandchildren. One sister predeceased her. Funeral services were held Dec. 15 from the home to the Geiger Mennonite Church in charge of Bro. M. H. Roth, assisted by Bro. M. Hallman. Text, John 14: 1-3. Rosenberger - Persida, daughter of Aaron and Barbara (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., June 25, 1870; died May 9, 1938, at her home near Haysville, Ont. She was in her 68th year. On Sept. 29, 1891, she was united in marriage to Isaiah S. Rosenberger, also of Wilmot township. The union was blessed with 2 sons and 6 daughters. She confessed Christ as her personal Saviour in 1891 and united with the Mennonite faith and remained true to the end. In 1897 her husband was ordained to the ministry and she was a faithful companion to him in his work. Always ready to lend a helping hand and ready at all times to share with her husband the joys and sorrows, the burdens and experiences that come with those who are called to service. In 1908 she with her husband and family moved to Guernsey, Sask., where they lived and labored for the Lord until May of 1936 when they again returned east and settled in Waterloo Co. She leaves her husband, 2 sons (Chester of Meteor, Sask., and David of Guernsey, Sask.), and 5 daughters (Ada, wife of George Hawes; Mary, wife of Herbert Kehl; Leona, wife of Leighton Schmitt, also of Guernsey; and Clista and Alda at home). One daughter (Bessie) predeceased her. There are also 15 grandchildren and 6 sisters. Funeral services on May 12 with Bro. M.H. Roth at the home and Brethren M. Hallman and M.H. Shantz at the Blenheim Mennonite Church. Text, II Tim. 4: 6-8. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Abraham Good

Mrs. Abraham Good of RR 2, Petersburg, died Friday at her home. She was 93.

The former Barbara Shantz, she was born at Haysville, April 17, 1875 and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. Aaron Shantz. She was the last surviving member of the family.

She was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church and the Women s Mission Society of the church.

She was predeceased by her husband, in 1963 and her daughter, Irene, in 1955. Surviving are five sons, Cranson and Aaron, both of RR 2, Petersburg, Oliver of New Hamburg, Eden and Laverne, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Viola, at home, and Olive of Kitchener and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Geiger Mennonite Church, Rev. Lester Bauman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Shantz, Elizabeth, daughter of Aaron and Mary (Beihu) Shantz, was born Oct. 15, 1880; died Jan. 28, 1952; aged 71 y. 3m. 13 d. At the age of 16 she accepted Christ as her Saviour during one of John S. Coffman's revival meetings, uniting with the Mennonite Church to which vows she remained loyal through life. In December, 1905, she was married to Joshua Nahrgang, who predeceased her Dec. 31, 1908. Her son, Wilfred Nahrgang, also predeceased her in 1945. On March 3, 1914, she married Noah Shantz, who survives her. Four sisters (Mrs. Rudy Roth, New Hamburg, Ont.; Mrs. Abram Cressman, Plattsville, Ont.; Mrs. Abram Good, Baden, Ont.; and Mrs. Abram Snyder, Waterloo, Ont.) also survive her. Funeral services were conducted by the Belnheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee, Ont., Jan. 30, by Curtis Cressman and Moses Bowman. Burial was made in the Detwiler Cemetery near Roseville, Ont.

UZZIAH SHANTZ

A well-known Strasburg farmer for the past 35 years, Uzziah Shantz, 73, died August 18 at his home at Strasburg after a brief illness

Born June 11, 1875, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Shantz. He was a member of Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Soloman (Grace) Bowman, of Floradale, and Mrs. Tobias (Erma) Bowman, of Lexington. and a son Leonard, of Parkway.

Two brothers survive, Norman of Haysville; Simeon, of New Hamburg; and two sisters. Mrs. Ephriam Schmidt, of Baden. and Mrs. Clara Mackenzie. of Kitchener. Five grand-children also survive.

he funeral service was held from his home at Parkway at 2 p.m. Sunday to Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg, for services at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Simon Martin, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

SCHMITT.-On Feb. 13, 1907, Sister Anna Schmitt (Nee Shantz), beloved wife of Ephraim Schmitt, peacefully passed away near Baden, Ont., aged 27 y. 2 m. 15 d. She was ill the last three months and at times hopes of recovery were entertained, but on Feb. 13, she died of septicaemia. She leaves a sorrowing husband and one child. They lived in matrimony three years. She lived an exemplary Christian life and was loved by all who knew her, and we have reason to believe that our loss is her gain. Funeral services were held at the Shantz meeting house on Feb. 16, where she was laid to rest. Services conducted in German from II Cor. 5: 1, by O. M. Cressman and in English from Phil. 1: 21, by J. B. Smith.

Joseph Shantz - Baden

Joseph Shantz, 60, of R.R. 2 New Hamburg , died at his home yesterday afternoon following a lengthy illness. Born in Wilmot Township, a son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Daniel Shantz, he was a well known district farmer. He was a member of the Geiger Mennonite Church. Besides his wife, the former Lydia Snyder, two sons, Vernon of Victoriaburg and Wayne of Baden, and to daughters, Louise and Alice at home, survive. Here brothers, Norman and Simeon of Haysville and Uzziah of Strasburg and two sisters, Mrs. Ephraim Schmidt and Mrs. John McKenzie of Baden and one grandchild also survive. A sister Annie, died 34 years ago. The remains will be held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 7 o'clock tonight when removal will be made to the residence near Baden until 1: 30 p.m. Monday. The funeral with Rev. Moses Roth officiating will be held at the Geiger Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Joseph Shantz

A lifelong and well known resident of Wilmot Township, Mr. Joseph Shantz, passed away at his home east of Wilmot Centre on Friday, May 15, aged 60 years. He had been ill for some time and two months ago sold his farm, stock and implements, owing to poor health.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Shantz, pioneer residents of the district. He was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church.

Besides his wife, the former Lydia Snyder, he is survived by two sons, Vernon, Victoriaburg, Wayne, Baden, two daughters, Louise and Alice, at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Norman and Simeon Shantz, of Haysville, Ussiah, Strasburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Eph. Schmidt, and Mrs. John McKenzie, Baden, and one grandchild.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home to Geiger Mennonite Church for service, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Moses Roth conducted the funeral service, which was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

Joseph, son of the late Daniel and Mary (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., on Dec. 30, 1881, and lived in the said township his entire lifetime. He passed away at his home near Baden, Ont., on May 15, 1942; aged 60 y. 4 m. 15 d. Bro. Shantz had been in failing health for some time, but was not confined to the house until the last several weeks before his death. He was a faithful member of the Geiger Mennonite congregation near Baden for the past 45 years. His place at church was seldom vacant. During his last illness he expressed his desire to go Home. On Feb. 8, 1911, he was married to Lydia Snider who survives him with four children: Vernon of Petersburg, Wayne of Baden, and Louise and Alice, at home. There also remain: 1 granddaughter, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters: Norman and Simeon of Haysville, Uzziah of Strasburg, Mrs. Ephraim Schmitt and Mrs. John McKenzie of Baden. One sister, Annie, predeceased him 34 years ago. Funeral services were held at the home by Bro. M. Hallman and then at the Geiger Mennonite Church, where the Bros. C. C. Culp of Brethren, Mich., and M. H. Roth spoke from the texts found in John 14:1-7 and Matt. 5:12a. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

She accepted Christ as her Saviour on Mar. 14, 1897, and has been a faithful and active member at Shantz Church for forty years. She served eighteen years as secretary of the Ladies' Aid. For the last number of years her health had been failing and, amid trials and suffering, God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to take her to her eternal rest. She will be greatly missed in the home, church, and community, - above all, in the home. She was a real" mother in Israel," always ready to help wherever she could. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Orphen Wismer, and at the Shantz Mennonite Church by Bros. Moses Rothand L. H. Witmer. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. L.H.W.

Sister Habel accepted Christ in her youth and was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church at Geigers for 43 years, where her presence and help will be missed, but she has gone to be with her Lord, which is better. She had been in failing health for a few years, but a paralytic stroke was the immediate cause of her death. The funeral services were held March 24 from her home to Geiger's Mennonite Church in Charge of Bros. Moses H. Roth, assisted by the brethren C.C. Cressman and Jonas Snider. Text, Heb. 9: 27. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. John E. Bingeman Passes Suddenly

Seized by a heart attack, Mrs. John E. Bingeman passed away very suddenly at 9.30 o'clock on Wednesday night at her home on Jacob Street. The news of her death came as a distinct shock to her family and many friends. She was in her 65th year.
The late Mrs. Bingeman, nee Judith Shantz, was born in Wilmot Township near Haysville, a daughter of the late Solomon Shantz and Marian Hostetler. She was married in March 1899, to John E. Bingeman and they resided on the Shantz homestead for several years, later moving to Haysville. The deceased came with her husband and their family to New Hamburg in 1911. During her residence here, Mrs. Bingeman was an active worker in the local Evangelical Church. She was president of the Women's Missionary Society of that church at the time of her death, and was also a member of the Ladies' Aid Society.
Her husband, a former reeve of New Hamburg, and an ex-warden of Waterloo County, predeceased her in January, 1940. One son, Earl, was drowned at Port Dover in 1936 and a daughter died in infancy.
The surviving members of the family are Edith, Reg.N., in the Hamilton General Hospital; Mrs. Harry Barnes (Vera), New Hamburg; Mrs. Homer Watson (Marion), Moncton, N.B.; Harold and Stanley, Woodstock; Lloyd, Buffalo, N.Y.; Nile, London, and Perlus and Jack, St. Thomas. Also surviving are one brother, Eph. Shantz, Haysville, and three sisters, Mrs. Titus Kolb, Kitchener; Mrs. Jos. Salzman, Petersburg, and Mrs. Frank Miller of Millersburg, Ohio. Shantz - Bishop Moses H. Shantz, eldest son of the late Solomon and Mary Ann (Hostetler) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., Sept. 10, 1884; died at his home near New Dundee, Ont., Aug. 14, 1938; aged 53 y. 11 m. 4 d. He had been under medical care for a few years, due to a heart ailment. This became more severe during the last few weeks, and was the cause of his sudden passing on Sunday morning.

He was converted and was received into the fellowship of the Church at the age of fourteen. Oct. 13, 1907, he was ordained a minister, and pastor of the Blenheim congregation. Besides being actively engaged in pastoral work in these thirty years, he also served the Church in many other positions. He was elected Moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario for ten consecutive years, from 1922 to 1932. He also served as President of the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario for several years after its organization in 1929. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of the Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

In 1933 he was elected Vice-President of the Mennonite Publication Board, and two years later became President of this organization, which position he occupied at the time of his death. On Sunday, July 24, 1938, he was ordained a bishop in the Mennonite Conference of Ontario, his especial charge being the congregation at Clarence Center, N. Y.

On March 4, 1908, he was married to Catherine Martin of Elmira, Ont. They lived on his farm south of Haysville until 1923, when they moved to their present residence opposite the Blenheim Church near New Dundee. There survive to mourn his passing, his wife, 1 son (Gordon), and 2 daughters (Luella and Mary). One son (Vernon) predeceased him in 1911. There also remain 1 brother (Ephraim of Haysville) and 4 sisters (Mrs. John E. Bingaman of New Hamburg, Mrs. Titus L. Kolb of Kitchener, Mrs. Jos. Saltzman of Petersburg, and Mrs. Frank Miller of Millersburg, O.). One sister (Mrs. Conrad Hebel) passed away several months ago.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 17, and was largely attended, over one thousand people being present from many communities to pay tribute to the passing of a brother, a friend, and a fellow worker. The funeral service was in charge of Bishop S. F. Coffman. The service at the house was conducted by Bishops M. Hallman and M. H. Roth. The Brethren, Silas Weldy of Indiana and Jesse Short of Ohio, conducted the devotional at the church. Bro. D. A. Yoder of Elkhart, Ind., preached the funeral sermon. Text, I Cor. 15: 24-27. A few words of tribute were given by Bros. A. J. Metzler of Scottdale, Pa., and Oscar Burkholder of Breslau. Closing prayer was offered by Bishop Jonas Snider. The burial service at the grave was conducted by Bro. S. F. Coffman, interment in Blenheim Cemetery

Shantz, Moses H. (1884-1938)

Moses H. Shantz: church leader and farmer; born 10 September 1884 near Haysville, Ontario to Solomon and Mary Ann (Hostetler) Shantz. He was the oldest in a family of two sons and five daughters. On 4 March 1908 he married Catherine Martin (9 March 1885-4 December 1974) of Elmira, Ontario. They had two sons (one died in 1911) and two daughters. Moses died 14 August 1938 of a heart attack at his home across from the Blenheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee, Ontario.

Moses Shantz was a farmer by vocation, working the home farm until 1923. The family then moved to the farm where he died. He was baptized in 1898, and was immediately active in the Sunday school and Bible Conferences of the day. He was among the first class of students in the Ontario Mennonite Bible School in early 1907 and on 13 October 1907 was ordained as a minister for the Blenheim Mennonite Church, his home congregation. On 24 July 1938 he was ordained as a bishop, particularly to serve the congregation at Clarence Center, New York. However he died before he was able to make any visits as bishop to that congregation.

As was common for his day, Shantz did not have much formal education, though he had a life-long interest in reading. His personality was empathetic, an asset in his pastoral relationships. He had a good memory for names, and related easily to persons of many backgrounds. His preaching style was "heart to heart" rather than "sermonizing." A co-worker, S. F. Coffman , described Shantz as "a remarkable helper to others on account of his deeply sympathetic nature. He could enter into their problems with understanding and appreciation; he felt with them their burdens and and their sorrows; then, with the most kindly manner, he led them to wise decisions and to the comfort of Christian attitudes in all of their problems."

His administrative gifts led Moses H. Shantz to numerous leadership roles both in his area conference and within the larger Mennonite Church. He served as moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario from 1922-1932, and again from 1934-1936. From 1932-1934 he was assistant moderator. He became Vice-President of the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario in 1929 when missions activity within the conference was reorganized, and he served in that role until 1936. In his active promotion of mission work, Shantz traveled often to the mission stations. He also served on the oversight board for the Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

Within the denomination Shantz served on the Canadian Section of the Peace Problems Committee, and a number of times on the Committee on Arrangements for General Conference. In 1933 he was elected as Vice-President of the Mennonite Publication Board, and in 1935 became President of that Board, serving until his death.

Moses H. Shantz suffered health (heart) problems in his later years, and his premature death removed a calm, mediating voice from the Ontario Mennonite scene at a time when fractious doctrinal issues created tension within the conference. His stature in the Mennonite community is indicated by the number of persons who attended his funeral -- over one thousand in all, including visitors from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York.

Ephraim Shantz Passes At K-W Hospital
Ephraim Shantz, well known local resident, passed away at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital last Saturday at the age of 69 years. Mr. Shantz had been confined to hospital for nearly two weeks before his passing. He was a son of the late Solomon Shantz and the former Maryanne Hostetler and was born in Wilmot township. Prior to his retirement some ten years ago he had farmed in Wilmot Township. He was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church, New Hamburg. Mr. Shantz was actively interested in local sports and was a member of the New Hamburg Turf Association as well as the New Hamburg Board of trade. Surviving are his wife, the former Edna Weber, whom he married in 1916; two sisters, Mrs. Titus (Priscilla) Kolb, Kitchener; and Mrs. Frank (Susan) Miller of Millersburg, Ohio. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from Zion Evangelical UB Church, with internment in Riverside cemetery. Rev. M. E. Reuber was in charge of the service. Pallbearers were Messrs. Jack Bingeman, Roy Habel, Gordon Shantz, Hugh Shantz, Robert Weber and Kenneth Weber.

PETERSBURG - Mrs. Joseph Salzman, 63, a resident of Victoriaburg, RR 2, Petersburg, died yesterday at her home. She was the former Mable Shantz, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Shantz. She was born at Haysville, Aug. 21, 1889, and was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden. Surviving are her husband; four sons, Sanford and Clifford of Kitchener and Florian and Marcel of Petersburg; two daughters, Mrs. William (Gladys) Ramseyer of Baden and Miss Ruth of Petersburg; one brother, Ephraim of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Priscilla Kolb of Kitchener and Mrs. Frank Miller of Millersburg, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren. A brother and two sisters died before her. The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until tomorrow at 9 a.m. when it will be removed to the home in Victoriaburg. The death of Elton Christner took place on Sunday last at his home west of the town, after an illness with diphtheria of a week's duration. He had a very hard fight for his life, but in spite of all doctors could do, including an operation, he succumbed as states, at the age of 37 years.

Elton was well known and well liked throughout the district, although he was of a quiet disposition in public, and his many young friends will miss him from their circles. He was born at New Hamburg, Ont., and came to Alberta about 17 years ago, with Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Rennie, his uncle and aunt, consequently he could be classed as an old-timer. His father and mother are both dead, but he leaves a wife at home, two full brothers, one in Kitchener, Ont., and the other in Minnesota, and a sister who lives at Plattsville, Ont., besides some step-brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. Mr. and Mrs. John Christner of Calgary is an uncle and aunt.

The funeral took place on Monday at Didsbury.

SHANTZ. -Eden, son of bro. Noah S. and Sister Susanna Shantz, died on March 29th 1898 in Wilmot Twp. , Waterloo Co. , Ont. , of appendicitis. He was born July 3rd, 1887 and was consequently in his eleventh year. He was a clever boy and beloved by all who knew him. A large concourse of friends, neighbors and acquaintances gathered at the funeral to sympathize with the bereaved parents, this being their fifth child in the glory world. The large gathering at the funeral in the Blenheim church on the 31st of March was addressed by Pre. Noah Stauffer in an earnest discourse from Psalms16: 6.

Cressman.- Ivan S., son of Moses and Elizabeth (Shantz) Cressman, was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Mar. 3, 1884; died at the K-W Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., Nov. 10, 1967; aged 83 y. 8 m. 7 d. On Sept. 22, 1909, he was married to Clara Shantz, who died Sept. 29, 1959. Surviving are one daughter (Myrtle), one brother (Addison S.), and one sister (Mrs. Effie Snyder). He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Nov. 13, with Robert N. Johnson officiating.

Cressman. Leander S., eldest son of Ezra and Louisa Cressman, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., Dec. 28, 1887. He met instant death on a railway crossing in Kitchener, Ont., July 4, 1932; aged 44 y. 6 m. 9 d. On Jan. 21, 1913, he was united in holy wedlock to Jessie R. Oliver. The union was blessed with six children: Margaret, Isabelle, James, Allen, Robert, and Marie. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, 3 daughters, father mother, and one brother, Curtis. His brother Howard predeceased him about 5 years ago. At the age of seventeen he confessed Christ and united with the Mennonite Church, to which faith he remained faithful till death. On Monday morning, July 4, he in company with his daughter Isabelle, left home to go to his work, and while entering the city of Kitchener the trolley car hurled him into eternity. Funeral services were held July 6, with services at the home by the pastor, M. H. Shantz, thence to Blenheim Mennonite Church where services were continued by M. H. Shantz, assisted by Moses Roth. Text II Cor. 5: 1. Interment in adjoining cemetery. A very large concourse of people had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect.

Bishop Curtiss C. Cressman

New Hamburg - Bishop Curtiss C. Cressman of RR 1, New Hamburg, died Wednesday at K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was 77.

Born May 31, 1894, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Cressman.

He farmed in Wilmot Township for many years and was bishop of the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church.

Bishop Cressman was predeceased by his first wife, the former Amanda Ethel Byler in 1956 and his second wife, the former Clarice Cressman in 1969; by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Strubhar in 1955; a son and a daughter in infancy, and two brothers.

Surviving are a son, Howard of RR 1, New Hamburg; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Lillian) Bean of New Dundee and Elsie Cressman, a missionary in Somali, Africa; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The body is at the Bruce A. Omand Funeral Home here until noon Friday when removal will be made to the church for service at 2 p.m. Rev. Earl Koch will officiate.

Burial will be in Biehn Mennonite cemetery, Wilmot Township.

Cressman.--Howard Cressman was born near New Hamburg, Ont., April 10, 1897; died where he was born on March 12, 1927; aged 29 y 11 m. 2 d. In Dec., 1924, he was united in marriage with Sister Ida Snyder, Hespeler, Ont., to which union was born one son. Just one week previous to his death he was taken seriously ill with pleuro-pneumonia and God saw best to take him home. During his illness he suffered severely and continuously, but he bore it all much patience and Christian fortitude. At the age of 14 he accepted Christ as his personal Savior, united with the Mennonite Church, and remained a faithful member to the end. In his untimely departure he leaves a sorrowing companion, one son (Keith), father, mother, two brothers (Leander and Curtis), besides a host of relatives and friends. In the home he will be greatly missed as an affectionate companion and a loving father. In the Church his service and counsel can no longer be personally given, but we bow to our heavenly Father, and from our heart's desire to say, "Thy will be done." Funeral services were held Mar. 14, from his late home to the Bean Church, and burial in the adjoining cemetery. Brethren Ozias Cressman, Manasseh Hallman, Moses Shantz, and Oscar Burkholder conducted the services. Text, Rev. 13: 14.

A well-known farmer of Wilmot Township, Aaron Bowman of Preston, died Saturday in South Waterloo Hospital. Galt. He was 75.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bowman, he was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Selinda Cressman; two sons. Stanley of RR 2. Petersburg and Delton of RR 2. New Hamburg; two daughters. Mary of Kitchener and Anna of Toronto: one brother. Weston of Kitchener, one sister, Annie of Kitchener and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his twin hrother and a sister.

Funeral service was held at the Geiger Mennonite Church on Wednesday

Burial was held in the church cemetery.

TOBIAS BOWMAN

Tobias Bowman, Kitchener died January 23 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief Illness. He was 75.

Bom in Wilmot Township Dec. 6, 1892, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bowman. He has been a Twin City resident for the past 44 years, he was a member of First Mennonlte Church and had been employed by the Kitchener Coal Co. Ltd. for 40 years before his retirement in 1962.

Surviving are his wife, the former Sybilla Schweitzer, whom he married in Kitchener Dec. 19, 1917; one son, Robert G. of Kitchener; one daughter, Dorothy, also of Kitchener; two brothers, a twin, Aaron, and Weston, both of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Minerva Rosenherger of Nipiwan, Sask., and Annie of Kitchener, and two grandchildren.

The service was held at First Mennonite Church Kitchener, Thursday afternoon. Rev. Robert N. Johnson, minister of the church, and Rev. F.W. Zinck, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, officiated. Temporary entombment was made in Woodland mausoleum, and burial will follow in First Mennonite Cemetery.

Milford Cressman of RR 1, Plattsville, died Sunday at his home at the age of 74.

He was born July 20, 1893, on the farm on which he resided all his life.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abram Cressman. he is survived by a brother. Clarence, and sister. Miss Barbara Cressman, both of RR l, Plattsville and two nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services were held from the Blenheim Mennonite Church last Tuesday, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Miss Cressman was born in Blenheim township and was a member of the Nith Valley Mennonite Church and had been a member of the Plattsville Women's Institute.

Daughter of the late Abram Cressman and the late Judith Shantz. Lovingly remembered by her nephews, John Cressman of RR 1, Plattsville, Marcel Reier of Kitchener; her nieces, Cathryn (Mrs. Larry Wagler) of Paisley, Judy (Mrs. Bob Rivers) of RR 1, Plattsville, Margaret (Mrs. Russell Campbell) of RR 1, Fullerton; three grand-nephews and one grand-niece.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Milford, Clarence and Roy; one step-sister, Mrs. Nettie Reier and one nephew, Manford Reier.

Friends and relatives called at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, New Hamburg Chapel, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, after 2 p.m. Monday and until Tuesday at noon, when transfer was made to the Nith Valley Mennonite Church, RR 1, New Hamburg, for service at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Amzie Brubacher officiating. Interment to follow in the Blenheim cemetery.

Shantz.-Clinton, son of Cleason and Maria Shantz, was born Sept. 18, 1897 at Waterloo, Ont. At the age of 15 years he confessed Christ and was received into the church, and has been a member since. He died Oct. 14, 1918; aged 21 y. 26 d. His death was due to influenza, and after a relapse, developed into pneumonia. May the Lord console the family in their bereavement. Due to influenza, brief services were conducted at the home by Bro. Noah Stauffer. Buried at the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery.

FLORENCE SHANTZ 1912 - 2007 Went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 7, 2007, in her 95th year. Dear aunt of Margaret (Cecil) Ashley, Elaine Brubacher, Janet (Bud) Hebel, Sharon Hicknel, Randy (Reta) Shantz, Glen (Elizabeth) Brubacher, and the late John (Lorraine) Brubacher. Also will be missed by 15 great-nieces and nephews and 24 great-great nieces and nephews. Florence was predeceased by her brothers, Clinton, Elroy, and Earl and her sister, Bernice Brubacher. Florence was a dedicated lifelong member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church and gave much of her time and energy to the service of her Lord in the Church that she loved. Good, -- Irene, daughter of Abraham and Barbara (Shantz) Good, was born March 14, 1908 near Baden, Ont.; passed away at the K-W Hospital on Oct. 14, 1955, after a lengthy illness; aged 47 y. 7 m. She accepted Christ as her Saviour in her youth and united with the Geiger Mennonite Church, being a faithful member until death. Most her life was spent in performing the ordinary duties of life, and she will long be remembered by her many kindnesses. For a number of years she served as matron of Rockway Mennonite School. She is survived by her parents, two sisters (Viola, Toronto; Olive, Kitchener), and 5 brothers (Cranson, and Aaron of Peterburg; Oliver of Preston; Eden and Lavern of Waterloo), and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Oct. 16 at the Geiger Mennonite Church in charge of C. C. Cressman and M. H. Roth. Bro. Roth spoke on the text, Ps. 17: 16, which was selected by Sister Good before her passing. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Good, Eden S. - Passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at Pinehaven Nursing Home, in Waterloo, on Tuesday, August 12, 2003, in his 88th year.

Beloved husband of Doris (Bearinger) whom he married September 16, 1950. Loving father of David and Cathy of Kitchener and Stuart of Hanover. Lovingly remembered by grandsons, Bradley and Thomas. Also remembered by brother Oliver and his wife Olive Good of New Hamburg, sisters-in-law Audrey and her husband Orval Reist of Kitchener and Eileen and her husband Bill MacDonald or Parry Sound and brother-in-law Morgan Feick of Kitchener.

Eden was born in Wilmot township, son of the late Abraham and Barbara (Shantz) Good. Predeceased by brother and their wives Cranson and Violet Good, Aaron and Mary Good, Laverne and Margaret Good; sisters Viola, Olive and Irene Good and sister-in-law June Feick.
As a young man, Eden worked as a farm hand at area farms. Following this, he worked a various wood working companies as a cabinet maker for more than 30 years. In his spare time, gardening and wood carving were his hobbies. Eden was a faithful member at Erb Street Mennonite Church, where he also served as church and cemetery grounds keeper.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Eden with his family at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South in Waterloo from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held at Erb Street Mennonite Church on Friday, August 15, 2003, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Allan Rudy Froese officiating. Interment to follow in Erb Street Mennonite Cemetery.

Mr. Shantz was a farmer for many years. Latterly he was employed with the University of Waterloo before retirement. He was also very active and enjoyed many of the events at Fairview Mennonite Home. Leonard was a member of Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship Church.

Beloved husband of Idella (Schmidt); loving father of Keith, Howard and his wife Barbara, Murray and his wife Gwen, all of Toronto, Dale and his wife Beverly of Kitchener; brother of Grace and her husband Solomen Bowman of Elmira, Erma and her husband Tobias Bowman of Kitchener. He enjoyed meeting and talking to people especially those he crossed paths with while selling Watkins products from his home and at the Waterloo Farmers Market. As a member of the Victoria School Senior Citizens Centre he enjoyed shuffleboard and lawn bowling. Having grown up on a farm, Elroy loved gardening and puttering in his yard and tool shed. Peacefully, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at her residence, Nithview Home, New Hamburg.

Irene and Orton had farmed at RR 2, New Hamburg and resided on Riverside Drive.

Irene was born 83 years ago in Wilmot township and was the daughter of the late Simon Shantz and the former Celina Cressman.

Irene was a lifelong member of Wilmot Mennonite Church, RR 2, Baden, where she had been an active participant of the WMSC,

Irene enjoyed throughout her lifetime quilting, gardening, sharing her love of music with others, and being a host family for 14 international MCC trainees.

Her greatest joy was being with her family.

Beloved wife of Orton Koch with whom she celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Sadly missed by Doreen (Jim) Houston of Penticton, B.C. and their children Rob (Monica), Tom, Dorothy; Enid (Glenn) Slabaugh of Goshen, Ind. and their children Sonya (Larry) and son Adam, Dana; Lloyd (Erla) of Wingham and their children Angela, Cindy, Jamie; Phyllis (Barry) Bishop of Waterloo and their children David, Danny, Jonathan; Rhoda (Dale) Gingerich of Tavistock and their children Greg and Cheri.

Mrs. Herbert Wismer of 424 Grandview Ave., New Hamburg, died on Saturday at St. Mary s Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 64.

Mrs. Wismer, the former Vera Schmitt, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Schmitt had resided in New Hamburg for eight years. She was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert in 1964 and by a brother.

She is survived by a brother, Daniel of Kitchener.

Funeral services were held Monday at Shantz Mennonite Church, Rev. Leslie Witmer officiating.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kiereta received her BA from Goshan College in Indiana in 1947. She went from Canada to China and was a Missionary in China from 1947 - 1949 when she was deported by the Communists. Mrs. Kiereta then served as a Missionary in Japan from 1949 - 1956, coming to Chicago in 1957. Mrs. Kiereta was a resident of Lombard since 1975 and was a member of the Lombard Mennonite Church. Bean. --- Norman Edward, youngest son of Warren and Margretha (Axt) Bean, was born near New Dundee, Ont., April 22, 1923; died at the K. W. Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., June 25, 1940; aged 17 y. 2 m. 3 d. His death was caused by peritonitis, following an appendix operation. On Nov. 4, 1934, he was received into the fellowship of the Blenheim Mennonite Church, to which call he remained faithful during these few years. He was deeply interested in the activities of the Church, where he will be great missed, as well as in the home. Those remaining to mourn their loss are his parents, 3 brothers (Andrew of Woodstock, Oliver of New Dundee, Gordon of Bright); 3 sisters (Dorothy, Ruth, and Hilda, at home), his aged grandmother, and many friends and relatives. Funeral services were held June 28 at the Blenheim Mennonite Church, in charge of Moses N. Baer and C. C. Cressman. Text, Job 14: 14. Interment in the Blenheim Cemetery.

The death occurred Friday at K-W Hospital, of Clinton Habel, 67, of Kitchener, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Habel was a native of Wilmot Township, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Habel. He had been a resident of Kitchener for the past 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, the former Edna Shantz, whom he married in 1922 in Wilmot Township; two sons, Monroe of North Bay and Ronald of Kitchener; one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Lucille) Aiken of Waterloo; two brothers, Harry of Fort Erie and Roy of Plattsville; one sister Mrs. Mary Ann Thibideau of Kitchener; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Lorne.

Funeral services were conducted at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, Monday afternoon, with Rev. C. S. Wilhelm of London officiating. Burial was in Woodland cemetery.

Habel, Lorne, son of the late Conrad and Maggie (Shantz) Habel, was born at Wilmot Center, Ont., 53 years ago; died at his home in New Hamburg on Feb. 9, 1956, after a long illness. Several months before his death he realized his need of cleansing from sin and accepted Christ as his Saviour. He was instructed in the Word, baptized, and received into fellowship of the Mennonite Church. During those last weeks of his life he testified of the great grace of God and gave evidence of a transformed life. Surviving are his wife, the former Fanny Gooding, 2 sons, Kenneth and Earl, one daughter, Helen, all of New Hamburg; 3 brothers, Clinton, Kitchener, Ont.; Harry, Buffalo, N. Y.; and Roy, Plattsville; one sister, Mrs. Wallace Thibideau, Ayr, Ont., and 2 grandchildren. Funeral services held on Feb. 13 at Geiger Mennonite church were in charge of Moses H. Roth, assisted by C. C. Cressman. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church, Women's Society for World Service and New Hamburg Women's Institute. Her husband, Harry, died in 1951. Surviving are six brothers, Harold and Stanley, both of Woodstock, Lloyd of Buffalo, Nyle of Toronto, and Pearlous and Jack, both of St. Thomas; and two sisters, Mrs. Homer (Marion) Watson of Moncton, N. B., and Mrs. Wilson (Edith) Dunlop of Dundas. The body is at the Futher Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg, until Saturday noon. Service will be conducted at Zion EUB Church at 2: 30 p.m. by Rev. F. Earl Bingeman Loses Life By Drowning Was Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Bingeman

The sad news was received here on Monday night that Earl A. Bingeman, of this town, was drowned in Lake Erie, that evening. Word was telephoned to the parents here shortly after the accident and his mother and brother, Perlus, left immediately for Port Colborne. According to reports he and two others, Owen Savage and Ernest Rudd, were out in a dinghy. The boat suddenly tilted in the choppy lake and Earl Bingeman was thrown into the water. Savage also fell overboard but Budd owner of the boat managed to stay in the boat. They were about 100 yards off shore when the accident happened. Savage managed to swim ashore and Bingeman pulled out strongly for shore but disappeared in the choppy water. His body was recovered by bathers half an hour later, but all endeavors at rescusitation failed.

Mrs. Bingeman, with whom her husband had been swimming a short time before, saw the accident from the shore. The accident victim was born in Haysville 29 years ago and came to New Hamburg at an early age. Completing his school education here he clerked in Mr. G. B. Hathaway's store here, later going to Kitchener and then to Galt. For the past three years he had been manager of a gents furnishing store at Port Colborne. He was married two years ago to Miss Jean Wiggins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Wiggins, of Galt, who is left to mourn his tragic death, besides his parents here, six brothers and three sisters, Harold, of Ingersoll, Lloyd, of Buffalo, Stanley, of Sudbury, Nile, of London, Perlus and Jack, at home, Edith, of Hamilton General Hospital staff, (Vera) Mrs. Harry Barnes, Ingersoll and (Marian) Mrs. Homer Watson, of Montreal.

The late Mr. Bingeman was an obliging young man and was on his way to a successful career. His tragic and untimely death is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends. The remains were brought here yesterday and the funeral took place yesterday with service at his parent's home at three p.m. followed by internment in Riverside Cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance. The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved ones in their sad loss.

Esther K. Hess, 95, of Goshen, died Tuesday afternoon, July 29, 2014, at I.U. Health Goshen Hospital. She was born February 10, 1919, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada to Titus L. and Priscilla (Shantz) Kolb. On March 1, 1943 she married Charles V. Hess in Goshen. He died December 26, 1999. She is survived by three children, Janice (Jerry) Warstler of Sturgis, Michigan, Sandra K. Hess, and Jon C. Hess, both of Goshen; two grandchildren, Tonia Andrews and Todd Warstler and three great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, Leda Kolb, Myrtle Liechty, Charlea Snyder and Gertrude Edgeworth, and a brother, J. Harvey Kolb. A 1940 graduate of Goshen College, she was a longtime, active member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the Delphians and a charter member of the Goshen chapter of American Association of University Women. Mrs. Hess taught at Jefferson High School from 1942 to 1950. She was the first director of the Goshen YWCA, retiring in 1980 after 16 years. A Friday, September 26, 2014 11 a.m., memorial service will be conducted at Goshen City Church of the Brethren. Pastor Bev Weaver will officiate. A private graveside service will be held in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to Goshen City Church of the Brethren, Heifer International or Church World Service.
