(Louise) - At her home, 247 Franklin St. N., on Friday, Dec. 21, 1973, after a brief illness, Marie Louise Koch, formerly of Moore Ave., Kitchener, age 91 years, born in Conestogo, a daughter of the late Julius Koch and the former Katherine Schiefele, a lifelong resident of the Twin City area and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, wife of Emil Carl Bergen who predeceased her in 1970; mother of Vernon, Kitchener; Hedwig (Mrs. William Elliott), Pontiac, Mich. and Douglas and Elsie (Mrs. Herbert Koch), both of Waterloo and the late Louis, Otto, Harold and Mrs. Ruth Wilson; 22 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Bergen was the last surviving member of her family. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. West, Kitchener, after noon on Saturday. Funeral and committal service in the chapel Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev. John Korock officiating. Internment in the family plot in Mount Hope cemetery. Donations to Lutherwood may be made as expressions of sympathy.

    A former Kitchener resident, Otto Edward Bergen, 55, of Detroit, died Monday of a heart attack in Zieger Hospital, Detroit. Born July 15, 1906, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bergen, 100 Moore Ave. He was born in Kitchener and moved to Detroit eight years ago. Surviving besides his parents are his wife, the former Pearl Becker; three brothers, Louis of Dundas, Vern of Kitchener, Douglas of Waterloo, and two sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Elsie) Koch of Kitchener, Mrs. Hedwig Howlett of Detroit. One brother and a sister predeceased him. The funeral will be conducted Thursday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit. Burial will be in Detroit.

Lovingly remembered by her 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.     Barnett, Gilbert Vernon - Aged 77, of Kitchener, passed away, at his home, Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at 7: 30 a.m., he was surrounded by his family, as he ended his courageous struggle with cancer. Beloved husband of Ruth (Hinton) Barnett for 58 years; dear father of Janice and husband Bob Currie, Jim Barnett and his wife Heather, Penny and husband Terry Rothwell, Cathy and husband Patrick Olinski and Wendy and husband Lee Weiner. Vern was also very proud of his 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who will all miss him dearly. Vern is survived by a sister, Hedwig Howlett of Detroit and a brother, Douglas Barnett and his wife Mary of Waterloo. Vern was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Louisa; brothers, Louis and Otto and sisters, Ruth and Elsie. Vern was an employee of Zehrs Markets for over 25 years and was Vice president of Human Resources. During the Second World War, Vern saw action in the North Atlantic while serving with the Canadian Navy. He was involved in the local music community for over 60 years, including many years with the Kitchener Musical Society Band and as the leader of several versions of the Vern Barnett Dance Band. Vern was also involved with United Way fund raising and Legal Aid in the K-W area. The family wishes to extend their profound gratitude to Dr. Donna Ward, Dr. John Mutrie and Dr. Ron Pace for their understanding, care and professional courtesy and to nurse Donna Martignago and all the other nurses for their compassion and loving care given to our family. At Vern's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener on Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998 at 7 p.m. Reception will follow in the Ratz-Bechtel Family Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations for a pain pump in Vern's name will be accepted. Further information regarding donations will be available at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home the evening of the memorial or by phone after that day. Vern will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Beloved husband of Mary (nee Nemeth) Barnett for 64 years. Great-grandfather of Kelsey, Aiden, Lucas, Christian, Jett and Diego. Dear brother of Heddy Elliott of Michigan. Predeceased by brothers, Louis, Otto, Vernon, infant brother Harold and sisters, Elsie Koch and Ruth Wilson. Douglas Herbert Barnett left his life as he lived it - with great dignity, honour and integrity. In his youth he started up a concrete business with his father and then went on to build a partnership with his son, Doug Jr. As a local businessman, he interacted with many in the concrete industry and always remained honest and fair in his business practice. As a community member, he shared his values by teaching Sunday School at his local church and as a family member taught his children joy and a great love of life by example. During his retirement years, he and his wife, Mary spent the winter months with friends in their home in Lakeland, Florida playing golf and fishing and took time to travel. As his illness curtailed his activities, he remained cheerful in the face of adversity, showered his affection upon his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and leaves his family and friends with a lifetime of wonderful memories and happy moments. Doug's family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A memorial service to celebrate Doug's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 in the chapel of the funeral home, Pastor Joanne Peppler officiating.
