    Notes:

Referring to the subject of this sketch [J. E. Erb] renews pleasant memories of more than thirty years ago. It was then that the writer [Hiram Newcombe] was an apprentice boy in the old CHRONICLE Office (presided over by the late P.E W. Moyer) and wielded the ink roller on many on occasion while Mr. Erb's father manipulated the lever of an old Washington band press. The latter, for all I know, is probably a relic among the collection of other "has beens" not in use in the Chronicle office of to-day.

The Thriving Metropolis of Wellesley Township - Date of Its Origin - Biographical Sketches of Its Business Men, Etc.

(By Our Special Correspondent, H. N.)

Notwithstanding that I have been severely handicapped by rheumatism for the past few days and fatigued by the hot weather and reading the reports - yellow and otherwise - of the Hispano-American conflict in tropical Cuba I find it a relief to write concerning this thriving metropolis of Wellesley Township. Here in the midst of peace and plenty the person who never has had such conditions come under his personal observation is almost inclined to deem incredible the sensational reports that are served up in the daily papers for his perusal. But such is about all the average citizen here has to disturb his equanimity of mind. He lives in the garden of Waterloo County and where want never knocks at his door. He has his three square meals a day, and if he has a particle of ambition in his anatomy his chances of laying up the necessary collateral for the inevitable rainy day are very promising.
