Christene Allemang served as tireless community worker Christene Allemang, who offered hope and brought joy to disabled youth, young adults and cancer sufferers despite her own battle with cancer, died Sunday at K-W Hospital. She was 49. Allemang, who was choir director, organist and a member of First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was a founder in 1982 of the Independent Living Centre which helps disabled young people live independently in the community. "She was always so positive,"centre director Roy J. Steckley said Monday, adding that her untiring efforts were crucial to the success of the centre's early years. "Chris had that persistent determination and just never gave up." Steckley said. She was instrumental in establishing the group's first apartment in Kitchener and also contributed to the centre's advocacy, peer support and barrier design programs, Steckely (sic) said. The centre now offers 13 programs for more than 300 people and has staff of 130. Allemang also worked closely with Woman Alive, a national Christian conference and convention organization for women and married couples. For the past 16 years she was the group's music director. "Chris was just a fantastic person," said Neil Maxwell, founder and director of Women Alive. Maxwell, who lives in Barrie, said in a telephone interview Monday that Allemang was an "outstanding musician" and had written a hymn book that is used nationally. In a tribute to be handed out at the church, Maxwell wrote: "Chris was a survivor who fought a long battle with cancer and who would time and time again rebound and with a smile say, 'We won again.' "She was a model of courage and determination who enjoyed laughter and was able even in her last earthly days to bring joy to other," Maxwell wrote. Allemang was a popular speaker and often her audiences numbered more than 1000. After operations for breast cancer in 1972 and a spinal tumor in 1981, which left her in a wheelchair, Allemang was often called on by doctors to serve as a resource person, visiting local hospitals and offering hope and encouragement to cancer patients depressed about their condition. Surviving are her husband, Vernon; two sons, Peter and Stephen; one sister, Georgia Knell, and one brother, Robert Hodgins. The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 2: 30 p.m at First Mennonite Church.
