The community was shocked on Monday morning to learn of the death of James Thomas Codling who suddenly expired about 8 o'clock while at his work in the blacksmithing department of the John Watson Mfg. Co. He was apparently taken with a heart attack and died in the course of a few minutes. Mr. Codling, who was 74 years of age, was the oldest employee of the Watson Company, having been with that firm since 1876 where he occupied the position of foreman of the blacksmith shop. He was a reliable and conscientious workman, and held a high place in the esteem of his fellow employees. In religion he was Presbyterian, and, for many years, was a valued member of the choir of Stanley Street Church. He later attended Knox United Church. He was born near Drumbo and, when a young man, removed to Ayr where he had resided ever since. He was married twice. His first wife, whose maiden name was Agnes C. Reid, predeceased him in 1909. He later married Orrie Menzies, who, along with the following two children by his first wife survive: Mrs. Alfred Coles (Beatrice), Pt. Colborne, and Mr. Edward C. Codling, Superintendent of Beatty Brothers, Fergus. One sister, Mrs. Alexander Ross, also survives.
