    74 Years In North Dumfries

The passing on Friday, Sept. 6, at a venerable age, of Mr. Walter Clark, Lot 29, Con 9, North Dumfries, removes one of the oldest residents of the township and a pioneer of 74 years. - The deceased was born at Roxburghshire, Scotland, in 1819, the same year as the late Queen Victoria, and was therefore in his 88th year. Coming to Canada with his father in the year 1833, the family settled on the farm now occupied by Mr. Robert Ritchie, adjoining the farm on which the subject of this brief sketch died. He resided in the same section continuously for the long period of 74 years, battling in the early days with the inconveniences incident to pioneer life and witnessing great changes as the years went by. Of a retired, unassuming disposition he never sought place or distinction, but was widely known and highly respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. In politics he was a conservative, and in religion a Presbyterian, adhering to Stanley St. Church. Early in life Mr. Clark married Miss Mary Ritchie, who predeceased him 16 years. A daughter and son also passed on before. He is survived by two sons and three daughters. They are: Walter in North Dumfries, William at home, Mrs. Robert Tunney at Westfield, Ont., and Margaret and Mary Ellen at home. Deceased had been in feeble health for a length of time, dropsy developing about two months ago. He was the last member of a large family. Interment was made in Ayr cemetery on Sunday afternoon, when a large circle of friends and acquaintances of the family paid their tribute of respect to the remains of the patriarchal pioneer. The services were conducted by Rev. D. I. Ellison, pastor of Stanley Street church, the pall-bearers being Messrs. Robert Ritchie, Walter Renwick, Henry Guthrie, John Gemmell, George Edgar and Alex Scott.

Dalzell, and the business was moved across the street to the premises now occupied by James D. Patterson. Walter retired from business some 10 years ago and made his residence on Willison street. He was well known and highly regarded by a wide acquaintanceship. He is survived by one niece, Mary Tunney, of Brantford.
