    Notes:

Passing of Mrs. Wm. McRuer - Here and there throughout the country that terrible scourge, the Spanish Influenza, is still claiming its victims. On Tuesday morning another well-known and highly esteemed resident of this community, in the person of Mrs. William McRuer, was called after about ten days illness. The death took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wyllie Guthrie, near Paris. While nursing the "flu" patients in the family, both at home and at Mr. Guthrie's, she contracted the disease, but was thought to be recovering when a relapse set in and in her run-down condition she was unable to rally. The deceased was a very estimable woman, and a wide circle of friends will sincerely regret her demise. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Gilliam. She was born in North Norwich tp., Oxford County, over 61 years ago, and was married on April 5, 1882. She was a member of Knox United Church in Ayr and a worker in church organizations. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters and two sons, viz.: Mrs. (Rev.) Andrew McRae, Gobles; Mrs. W. Guthrie, Paris; Mrs. Morton Hall, Blenheim; Wm. John and Robt. Alex, at home. The sympathy of the community goes out to the sorely bereaved husband and family. The funeral takes place from her late residence, lot 31, con. 5, South Dumfries, today (Thursday), at 2:30 p.m., to the Ayr Cemetery.

HALL, Raymond M. (1893-1960) maintained an office in Galt, Ontario (now part of Cambridge) for nearly 45 years. Born in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ont. on 16 May 1893, he was educated in Plattsville, Ont. and in Stratford, then moved to Toronto to take architectural courses at the Toronto Technical School. In 1913-14 he trained under the talented Toronto architect Charles S. Cobb, then moved to Kitchener where he worked as assistant to Bernal Jones on several occasions over beginning in 1914 and through to 1930. In the meantime, he opened his own office in nearby Galt, Ont. in 1915, and sustained his career there with a variety of eclectic designs for large private residences and commercial buildings. He served with Canadian Expeditionary Forces during WWI, and was briefly in partnership with John Evans, a local Galt architect, in 1919. One of his largest commissions completed during his career was the refined modernist design for the Waterloo County Registry Office in Kitchener (1938), and now called The Registry Theatre.

In 1945 he prepared a stripped modernist design for a proposed Civic Centre in Galt, but the scheme was never built. The perspective drawing by Hall showing his scheme for the project now forms part of the Raymond Hall Collection at the Ontario Archives. Hall died in Galt on 13 November 1960 (obit Galt Reporter, 14 Nov. 1960; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxxviii, Jan. 1961, 57; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). The Ontario Archives, now located at York University in Toronto, holds an extensive collection of original drawings by Hall covering the period from 1920 to 1955, and documenting more than 200 projects by Hall in Galt, and in southwestern Ontario....

    MCRUER, Douglas "Gordon"

I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away….. Gone to that celestial shore, on April 6th. Born April 8, 1932 to Robert and Marion Mcruer, Gord grew up on the family farm on Trussler Road. Alongside brother Don (1981), his parents taught him to work hard but also play hard. Always a team player, he enjoyed baseball and hockey, playing for his hometown, Ayr. Once off to university, he made life long friendships with his classmates of OAC '56. Upon his return to the farm, he married Barb (Kelman 1997) and they welcomed Lynn (Bill Labron, John and Andrew and Brittany Bethune), Mary (Pete Milanovich, Petar, Sarah and Lamar Martin, Katie, Jon, Emily and Mark), Heather (Bob Snell, Ben and Alicia Cabral, Stu and Meg), Doug (Beth Harmer, Will, Matt and Keith) passing on the values of faith, family, education, work and fun. Gord loved singing - whether in the church choir or a quartet. He liked a good game of hearts or crokinole and was a master of the "2-dive swim"…1 dive across the pool and the 2nd one back! His ability to pitch hay bales across the mow is legendary in the eyes of his kids. Left to mourn, Betty and Bert Armstrong, Carolyn Kelman, Margaret Kelman (Nelson 2010), Dave and Marie Kelman as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. Friends may call at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home (183 Northumberland St., Ayr), Friday 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 11 at Calvary Church, Ayr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Lyrical Lines Education Network OR Calvary Church OR Dr. Michael Strong: ALS Research OR Foodgrains Bank. Online condolences or donations may be arranged through www.wmkippfuneralhome.com or by contacting Wm. KIPP 519-632 8228. ….. When I die, Hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away …

SNELL, Heather Ann (nee McRuer) "That's it - that's all - I'm goin' home" And on a snowy Saturday morning, February 12, 2011, home she has gone. Heather Ann Snell, born August 10, 1962 as Heather Ann McRuer, is the cherished wife and forever love of Bob Snell and loving mama of Ben and Alicia, Stu, Meghan and Rosa. Heather is the amazing "youngest" sister of Lynn and Bill, Mary and Pete, and Doug and Beth. She is the daughter of the late Barbara and Gordon McRuer, who are waiting with open arms. Heather is dearly loved by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and in-laws. An inspiration to an entire community, Heather shared her love of life, and of family and friends with everyone she encountered. And with music in her heart, an incredible spirit and fabulous sense of humour, not to mention the occasional pair of killer heels, our fashionista taught us all lessons on how to live and love. She lived her life with a grace and style that is unmatched, while providing a continuing commentary to her family and friends which was founded in her belief that God is love - and answers about what to do are not too hard if you can remember that. And so, as Heather would have us do, we ask you to "pay it forward", be it with a random act of kindness or a donation to the charity most meaningful to you. We invite you to visit with Heather's family at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home , 183 Northumberland St., Ayr on Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held to Celebrate Heather's life at Knox United Church (92 Northumberland St., Ayr) on Wednesday at 11: 00 a.m. Spring Interment Ayr Cemetery. Donations to Lyrical Lines would be appreciated. Online condolences or donations may be arranged through www.wmkippfuneralhome.com or by contacting Wm. KIPP 519-632 8228
