Norman Voegtle Instantly Killed When Silverwood's Sleigh Overturned Fracturing His Skull

    WAS HELPING BROTHER

Fatality Occurred Near House Of Refuge When Uneven Roadway And Sudden Pull Unbalanced Vehicle

What would have otherwise been a Joyous Christmas was marred yesterday thru tragedy which entered into the home of one Kitchener family. While helping his brother Melvin deliver milk to customers of Silverwood's Kitchener Dairy. Limited. Norman Voegtle of South Queen street was instantly killed when the sleigh from which he was working turned over crushing him to almost instant death. Five little children are fatherless as a result. Coroner Dr. F. H. Kalbfleisch has ordered an inquent to take place at the city hall at eight o'clock Monday night. Dr. C. C. Belyea is in charge of the autopsy.

According to the story told the Record by the deceased's father, Norman, who was about 30 years of age. was with his brother on Christmas eve when the two were getting trees for their respective families. Being a milkman and also being out late at night, Norman suspected that his brother might be somewhat late in getting to work in the morning. He told him, therefore, that in case he was late to call him and he would help with the route. It was the fate of Norman to be called.

Upon reaching a spot almost in front of the House of Refuge on Frederick street about 11.30 o'clock, the sleigh was parked on the street, one side being raised. Having completed a call. Norman stepped on the side of the sleigh and ordered the horse to go on. It is thought that the weight of the body together with the sudden pull of the animal caused the sleigh. loaded with milk and empties, to overturn.

    Death Instantaneous

From what can be learned Melvin was close to the sleigh when the tragedy happened. Members of the Salvation Army were also dispensing Christmas carols near at hand. The hurried to the scene and lifted the sleigh from atop the deceased, Dr. C. C. Belyea was in the neignborhood and responded to the call. It was found that death came almost instantaneously. The weight of the sleigh bore down on the skull fracturing it badly. The remains were taken to Lippert and Hunter's Funeral Home.

Besides his wife. Clara and five children, there survives his father Oliver Voegtle of Albert street. south, one brother Melvin, Queen street south and four sisters, Mrs. John Glab, city. Mrs. A. Otterbine. Preston. Mrs. C. Dahmer, Waterloo and Miss Violet Voegtle, also of this city.

    Funeral Saturday

The body will be at the Lippert and Hunter Funeral parlors until Friday morning at ten o'clock, when it will be removed to the home of the accident victim's father, 183 South Albert street. Violet Scriver hosted cooking show on CKCO
    BY CHERRI GREENO Record staff

Only a select few knew how good,a mother and grandmother Violet Scriver was. But everyone knew how good a cook she was. From a tiny kitchen on the set of CKCO-TV, Scriver brought the fun of cooking to homes throughout Waterloo Region with her show Come Into the Kitchen.

Although she passed away Tuesday at age 89, Scriver's family and friends say her success and loving personality will live on forever.

Otherwise known as "Mrs. S," Scriver taught men and women, young and old, how to cook a healthy meal and make it look good. She taught them how to whip up quick and easy treats and make it look difficult. She taught amateur chefs how to have fun.

"She was extremely popular," said Reg Sellner, who used to work with Scriver on the show "I bet there are still some people using her recipes to-day" Sellner, who was a young bachelor when the show was on the air, admitted he learned a few cooking tips from Scriver. "She was very precise with her cooking," he said. Her show debuted in the mid-1950s and lasted into the mid-1960s. It was one of the first live shows produced at the station. After that, she travelled throughout Ontario, appearing on cooking shows as a guest chef She also wrote and published a cookbook. In her spare time, she visited family "For her time she made quite a bit of money, but it always went to family" said one of her two daughters, Margaret Perchaluk. "That's just the type of person she was."

Scriver went into the television business after her husband of only three years died in a factory accident. Although she was only 21 when he died, she never re-married, Perchaluk said. Instead, she concentrated on the family she had and helped raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of Perchaluk's fondest memories is when her mother would make miniature doughnuts,
"She always said you shouldn't make them on damp days," said Perchaluk. "I never asked why"

Having a mother as a professional cook, Perchaluk always had the best treats. She also had one of the most loving mothers, she said. "She was quite a woman," she said. "I am very proud of her"

Mel writes: I am the second child in a family of five and I grew up in Kitchener. At the age of fifteen, I started working at B.F. Goodrich and spent nearly forty-one years there -- retiring when the company was sold. I spent eighteen months in Elliot Lake, in 1957-58 for B.F.G.

I married Marj in 1949 and we started our family of four children. I became Baghiera in Brian's Cub Pack and stayed for thirteen years. The family, The church Board of Management and the M.S, Society kept me busy.

After retiring from B. F. Goodrich, I worked for thirteen years as a Court service Office in Family Court. I am now coasting and enjoying family and friends.

CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF MELVIN EDWARD VOEGTLE

HOLY TRINITY ANGLICAN CHURCH JULY 19, 2007
Written and delivered by Richard Martin

I am deeply honoured to have been asked to be part of this celebration of the life of Melvin Edward Voegtle.
I have known Mel for over 60 years, we are brothers-in-law, but more importantly, I have always thought of Mel as a close and much valued friend, who I enjoyed spending time with.

As we celebrate Mel, and share our memories and thoughts of:
" What made Mel Mel? And
" What he meant to all of us.
There will also be many references to Marj - As we all know it is virtually impossible to talk about one without the other.

From Mel's perspective his greatest accomplishment by far was the partnership he formed with Marj, Starting as very different individuals, they meshed perfectly as a couple. They loved unconditionally, worked extremely well together and in the process accomplished many of their dreams and ambitions - and earned the love and respect of all of us. Worthy roll models for any couple, young or old.

    Mel's # 1 priority was family:
" Sandy, Brian, Kathy and Kim
" The grandchildren and great grandchildren, and
    " The extended family.

Loving and always highly supportive, quick to express pride in their accomplishments and also quick to offer advice when he thought such was needed.
I don't know of any parents who worked harder to keep the family together than Marj and Mel.

Mel was justifiably of his employment record. Staring at age 15, he worked 41 years with B. F. Goodrich. In the late1950's Mel worked long hours at Elliot Lake - living apart from his family for 18 months - to accumulate the down payment for their home on Franklin St, - A home which they enjoyed for almost 50 years.

After Elliot Lake, Mel was sent on short duration field trips from time to time. He enjoyed both the travel and visiting different customer operations.

Mel retired from B. F. Goodrich when the company was sold. He then embarked on a 2nd career as a Court Service Officer in Family Court. He was uniquely suited for this work and thoroughly enjoyed assisting the families, judges and lawyers who attended the court. He continued in this work for 13 years.

Mel was one of those rare individuals who enjoyed his work and found it thoroughly satisfying, by the way Brian - any time your dad discussed your next job, he always identified the court as offering you the prospect of a highly rewarding 2nd career.

Mel was a very social person who loved talking to people. He had a real facility for attracting - and keeping - friends, many of these friendships dated back decades to:

    " A.Y.P.A
" Franklin St. and Holy Trinity
" B. F. Goodrich and the Court House

To name a few, and, many of these friends are here this morning. Anyone who came to the house was received warmly. Mel and Marg loved spending evenings with family and friends. Talking and playing cards - with Mel - ever the comedian - teasing someone to gain a reaction. Anytime Mel and I walked at the Rec Centre or went out for lunch, we invariably met old friends. Mel always enjoyed - and gained energy from these encounters.

Holy Trinity was the faith community which represented the keystone in the solid foundation which anchored Mel's life. He had a deep and trusting faith, and he lived his faith. Mel served on the church Board of Managers for many years and, was always available to help around the church in any way he could. Mel cherished the friendships which he and Marj enjoyed with so many parishioners. The church dances and other social events provided many happy occasions.

Mel and Marj shared a strong commitment to community service. In addition to his work at Holy Trinity, Mel became a leader of Brian's Cub Pack and continued for 13 years. He and Marj also worked for the MS Society for many years,

Mel had a life long passion for cars. Early in their married life, a car became a necessity to accommodate Marj's frequent family visits to Peterborough. The need was satisfied by purchasing a 20 year old, Robin's egg blew Oldsmobile - Which Mel drove and maintained with great pride and affection. Later Mel, became a convert to Ford products. Careful thought was given to any car purchase, and similar care was directed to regular servicing. One of the truly enjoyable highlights of Mel's last few months was to go with Kim to have her vehicle serviced at the Ford dealership in New Hamburg. To quote Mel; "They remembered me." An earlier highlight was the weekend he, Kim and Brian delivered his car to it's new owner in Ottawa.

    Let me summarize a few other memories;

" Mel was a life long baseball fan, starting as a Cleveland Indians supporter he quickly adopted the Blue Jays when they arrived on the scene. He loved watching ball games and attended the grandchildren's - and Kim's - games. A particular highlight for many years was the Labour Day Blue Jay Game with the guys - followed by a barbeque at The Coursey's.
" Later in life, Mel discovered that his true athletic ability was as a Bocci Ball player. He enjoyed the fellowship of the sport, but as was to be expected was a fierce competitor.
" Mel always looked forward to Sauble beach, he enjoyed miniature golf, cards and board games, and going to the beach. For thirty years the Martins vacationed at Southampton at the same time the Voegtles were at Sauble, for me the family visits back and forth were special.
" Mel always enjoyed and was generally the centre of attention, at gatherings of the extended family for picnics and other events.
" No description of Mel would be complete without mentioning his love of
    o Dancing
o His video collection featuring such stars as Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger and John Wayne, and
o His collection of Gospel and vintage CD's, and the enjoyment he got from singing along with the music.
That is the Mel Voegtle we all loved and respected.

    Before concluding

On behalf of all of the family and friends, I would like to pay tribute, and extend a very special thank you to, Kim, Brian and Kathy for the exemplary way in which they have coped during the last 2 years with the loss of their parents.

There is no course 101 Parent support and care. To prepare you. You learn as you go and do the best that you can, and, in the process, you find yourself doing things you never dreamed you were capable of. I give them the highest marks for the always considerate, devoted and compassionate way which they handled all aspects of their parents illnesses and passing. Kim, Brian and Kathy you have shown all of us what it means to really care.

We all have our special memories of Mel which will endure into the future. He was a good person who lived his life in accordance with a deeply held code of beliefs and principles. He was a loving husband and parent, a cherished friend, and, an exceptionally likeable and unforgettable guy.

I suspect Mel is now doing what he has wanted to do for the last 2 years, walking off into the sunset with his beloved Marj.
Mel go in peace with our love.
