    Major George M. Thomson Passed on Tuesday

    Major George M. Thomson, a native of Ayr, passed away in Sunnybrook Military Hospital, Toronto, on Tuesday, in his 63rd year. Major Thomson had been unwell for a considerable period and, latterly, sustained a series of strokes which hastened his demise.

    He was born in Ayr in Knox Church manse (now occupied by Rev. W. D. Goodger and Mrs. Goodger), being the younger son of Rev. John Thomson, D. D., beloved pastor of Knox Church, Ayr, for a period of 40 years (1871-1911), and Martha Kate Thomson.

    Mr. Thomson secured his education at the Ayr Public School, Woodstock Collegiate and Queen's University, Kingston.

    Served with 52nd Battalion

    In World War I, Major Thomson served with distinction, acting as Company Commander with the 52nd Port Arthur Battalion. He was wounded in 1915. His only son, Lieut. George Thomson, was killed in action in World War II.

    For many years he was with Gypsum Lime and Alabastine Ltd. During World War II he was safety officer with General Engineering and, latterly, had practiced as a consultant.

    Past President, Toronto Curling Club

    He was a member of Rosedale Presbyterian Church, the Engineers Club, Canadian Club, Toronto, and a past president of the Toronto Curling Club. He was vice president of National Construction Council of Canada, member of the Research Council of Ontario and of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

    He was married in 1918 to Mary Ratchford Thomson, who predeceased him in 1940. He is survived by his widow, Noela Thomson, and two daughters, Mr. K. M. Berscht, and Evelyn Thomson, and two step-daughters, Anne and Elizabeth. Also surviving are three brothers, John A., Belleville, and Pierre C. and W. Raymond, Toronto.

    Major Thomson had many warm friends in Ayr who will learn of his passing with sincere regret.

    The Funeral

    Following service at Rosedale Presbyterian Church, Toronto, this (Wednesday) evening at 8 o'clock. Interment will take place in Ayr Cemetery upon the arrival of the Toronto train at 10: 35 a.m. Thursday, March 3rd.
