    Suicide in Blenheim

James Baxter Drinks a Deadly Decoction

The community was terribly shocked early Monday morning when it became known that James Baxter, lot 10, con. 10, Blenheim, had ended his life by drinking caustic alkali, mixed with cider. The deceased, who was in his 55th year, had returned Saturday evening from a trip to the Northwest, where he had recently invested in a quarter section of land near Yorkton, for which it was said he paid $25 per acre, a sum about double what the property proved to be worth. Whether this was the direct cause of his rash act or not can only be surmised, but on Sunday he set to work writing out his will, in the course of which he asked forgiveness of his family for anything that might happen, thus indicating a determination of make away with himself. That night he retired with one of his sons, but got up about 1 a.m. His son heard him preparing the drink, but supposed he was getting something for a cold. As Mr. Baxter did not return to bed in the course of a reasonable time, the young man got up to see what was wrong and found his father in an apparently dying condition. Dr.; Mitchell of Drumbo and Dr. Meldrum of Ayr were sent for, the former arriving before death ensued. Mr. Baxter was a well-to-do, thrifty farmer, with a large connection throughout the district, and a wide circle of friends who are at a loss to understand his terrible action. His wife, who as been in the London asylum for some years, and four sons survive, two of whom - the eldest and youngest - are at home. To these he bequeathed in his will sums for service over and above their equal share in the property. Mr. Baxter was a member of Knox Church, Ayr, and a fairly regular attendant at Divine service. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon, interment being made in the Ayr cemetery.

Death of Richard Baxter - The death on Saturday evening at the residence of his mother-in-law, Blenheim, of Mr. Richard Baxter came as a shock to the community. On the 22nd of August last Mr. Baxter had the misfortune to sustain two fractures of his left leg. Under good surgical treatment the limb progressed favorably and the chances for a speedy recovery looked good, but Mr. Baxter was very restless under confinement and liver trouble developed, whether as the result of predisposition or of internal injuries received, in the accident is not definitely known. The deceased was in his 50th year and was born in Blenheim. In 1885 he married Miss Elizabeth Lillico, who, with a family of eight - three sons and five daughters - survives him. Of a quiet, unobtrusive disposition, he made many friends, all of whom will deeply regret his untimely end. In religion he was a Presbyterian and an elder in Knox church, while his political creed was strongly Liberal. Mr. Baxter was recognized as a good farmer and one who was making splendid headway. At the time of the accident he was busily engaged in the erection of a fine new house. The funeral took place from his late residence on Tuesday afternoon to Ayr cemetery and was very largely attended.

Tragic Occurrence - John Hugh Lillico Meets Death in Accident

John H. Lillico, former reeve of Blenheim Township and warden of Oxford County and Progressive candidate in the North Oxford federal election of 1921?, died at the home of Walter Barrie, on mile from Ayr, at 5: 45 Friday afternoon as the result of being severely scalded by steam which sprayed over his body as he stood pinned between a traction engine and a threshing machine on the 10th concession of Blenheim Friday afternoon. Mr. Lillico was one of the best known and most capable farmer in Oxford County, and the news of his tragic death caused a profound sensation, not only in the community in which he lived, but also in the surrounding district. His many years of public service to the county and township brought him largely before the public, and he was known as a deep student of public affairs, an inveterate reader and a public speaker of much ability. His untimely and removes from Oxford county one of the most prominent men. The accident which ended fatally for Mr. Lillico took place about eleven o'clock Friday forenoon, while he was moving a threshing outfit on the Barrie farm. When ascending a step hill, the engine stalled, and the machine began to back down the hill, ?ing out of control. The separator remained stationary while the engine crashed into it, and Mr. Lillico, who was standing between the two parts of the outfit was crushed in the collision. In the crash, the steam gauge on the engine was broken, and, helplessly pinned between the heavy machinery, Mr. Lillico was subject to a stream of steam, which scalded him badly. With the assistance of Mr. Barrie and son, he was ? from his perilous position, and taken to the home of Mr. Barrie, while medical aid was summoned. In spite of all that could be done to save him, his condition gradually became weaker, and he passed away at a quarter to six o'clock. Mr. Lillico, who was in his 59th year, was born in the township of Blenheim, which he later served faithfully in many capacities. He lived all his life on a farm in that township, and was very successful in his student calling. A man of studious mind, he devoted all his leisure time to a study of public questions, and began his public service as a school trustee of his home section, which he served for many years before being called to the higher service of the township. In 1908, he was elected to the township council of Blenheim, and sat in that body as a councillor for seven years. On Deputy-Reeve Harley becoming Reeve of Blenheim in 1915, Mr. Lillico was chosen to take his place as deputy-reeve. After two years as deputy, Mr. Lillico became reeve of the township. In 1919 he was elected to the highest office in the gift of the county, that of Warden. Mr. Lillico's next appearance in public life was in the 1921 Dominion election campaign. He had some time previously been selected as the candidate for this election by the Progressives of North Oxford, and after a stirring campaign, he was defeated by a narrow margin, running third in a very close contest with Dr. Sinclair, M.P., and E. W. Nesbitt. In this campaign, he made a splendid showing as an excellent speaker and a man well versed in the affairs of his country. In addition to his public service, Mr. Lillico was an ardent church worker. At the time of his death he was a trustee of the Knox United Church, Ayr. As a man, he had the profound respect of every citizen of the community, and the deepest sympathy of a wide circle of friends goes out to his bereaved family. Mr. Lillico is survived by his wife, four sons, Alex at Acton, McIntyre at Ayr, .and Douglas and Robert at home and three daughters, Catherine, Jessie and Christina, also at home. The funeral on Monday to Ayr Cemetery was largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends, the services being in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, assisted by Rev. G. I. Stephenson. There were many beautiful floral tributes. The pallbearers were as follows: Messrs. I. Perrin, J. Black, W. Lillico, M. Lillico, D. Brown and A. Barton.

The deceased was still a young man, being in his 38th year, and though not of a robust constitution, should ordinarily have been good for many years to come. An all-wise Providence willed it otherwise, and though friends may mourn, they also bow in submission. The deceased was born on the Baxter homestead, 10th Con., Blenheim, and having lived there or in the neighborhood all his life was west known in the community as a man of moral habits, religious principles and neighborly instincts.
As a member of a musical family, he was partial to the violin, and was leader of the popular organization known as the "Baxter Orchestra." About 7 years ago he was joined in wedlock with Miss Audrey Landreth of Ayr, who, with two children (Richard and Elizabeth), survives, together with his mother, two brothers and five sisters, namely: Mrs. McKenzie Edgar, Lindsay; Mrs. Jarius Maus, South Dumfries; Isabel, Margaret, Jean, Richard and James at home.
