    DAVID ELLENBAUM

    David Ellenbaum, one of the early and prominent pioneers of Pembina county died on Thursday June 14th at his home in Cavalier, after a short, Illness at the age of eighty-five years and six months.

    Mr. Ellenbaum was born in Wilmot Township Waterloo county Ontario, October 14th 1847[37] His father moved from Waterloo county to Wilmot Township Huron county Ontario and here he grew to manhood. He be came acguainted with Miss Mary Jane Gill and on June 24, 1870 they were united in marriage. They engaged in farming for a few years and in 1873 he sold the farm and took up the merchantile business in Dashwood, Ont., to this union were born seven children, two of which preceeded the father to the great beyond. In 1879, they emigrated to Pembina county North Dakota and took up a homestead four miles east of Cavalier continuing the store business for quite a number of years. He was a successful business man and a much respected citizen.. The ways of tranportation were such when he was engaged in the store on the homestead that it was necessary for him to haul the goods overland from Pembina which was the nearest station at that time.

    It was in March of 1885 in a series of meetings held by Revs. Hielscher and Mocius that he was converted and united with the Evangelical church of which he was an ardent worker until his death.

    Of the loved ones who remain there. are three sons, John Ellenbaum of Munich, North Dakota; Samuel of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Martin of Washington, D. C. also two, daughters. Mrs. Matilda Surerus and Mrs. Florence Bradbeer of Lethbridge, Alberta, Also the beloved wife, one brother: Mr. Daniel Ellenbaum of Sebewaing Michigan: three sisters Mrs. Hachel. Geiger of Pigeon. Michigan, Mrs. Anna Miller and Mrs. Jeha Baker of Ontario.

    The funeral services. were held from the Evangelical church in Cavalier on Monday afternoon by Rev. O. R. Breaw assisted by Rev. C. W. Baumann of the Methodist church. In the death of Mr. Ellenbaum this community looses one of its most honorable and esteemed, early pioneers, as well as the Christian man of character.
