    Death of Moses Hostetler

One by one the old pioneers of the township are being called away, and in the death of Mr. Moses Hostetler, which occurred at his home on Wednesday evening, August 26th, Wilmot loses one of its very earliest settlers, and also one of the few ones of these to remain. Mr. Hostetler reached the ripe old age of 95 years, 7 months and 14 days, and was at the time of his death the oldest man in Wilmot, and perhaps in the County of Waterloo.

The late Mr. Hostetler was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on the 12th of January, 1813, and came to Canada in 1834. He settled in Wilmot township in 1836, when this part of the country was yet a dense forest, and with the ambition of perseverance, characteristic of these early settlers, he yewed out a home for himself adjoining the present village of New Hamburg, and transformed it into one of the best farms in the county. On this he carried on his agricultural pursuits and lived continually thereon until death claimed him on Wednesday last, covering a period of over 70 years. On the 4th of July 1842, he was married to Margaret Latschaw, and the union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, four of who predeceased him. They were Lavina, William, Moses and Matilda (Mrs. Jonathan Kropf). His wife died about twenty-one years ago.

The remaining children are: David, Christian, Levi, Mrs. Solomon Shantz, and Mrs. Emanuel Hamacher, Wilmot; Isaac, of New Hamburg; Daniel, of Berlin, and Henry, of Wellesley. The late Mr. Hostetler was in active service during the rebellion of 1837, and took part in several skirmishes on Pelee Island and in the western peninsula of Ontario. In politics he was a life long Liberal. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, from his late residence to Christner's Cemetery.

    _______________

    MOSES HOSTETLER.

Before concluding my sketch of the business interests of Hamburg I feel it my duty to pay tribute to this grand old man of the neighborhood. The walk to his home afforded me ample compensation for the time taken up. A stroll of a half mile north on the "Dundas Road" brings you to a long lane that leads down to his residence, a solid stone structure surounded with fruit trees and ornamental foliage. The lane is bordered on both sides by young maples, and it is positively the most inviting approach to a farm home that I have entered for many a day. The farm contains two hundred acres and is one of the most valuable in this section. A greater portion of it was a dense bush when Mr. Hostetler settled on it October 26, 1836. He was born in Pennsylvania on January 12, 1813, being now near the end of his 86th year. His parents and several brothers came here at the same time, but when the Canadian rebellion broke out, the father, being opposed to the Government, induced all the members of his family, but the subject of this sketch, to return to the States. Several of his brothers are now living in the West. The father died here several years ago. Mr. Hostetler says he never regretted remaining in Wilmot as his life here has been crowned with prosperity and his health has been exceptionally good He was married July 5, 1842, to Miss Margaret, daughter of the late Isaac Latchau. She died March 3, 1887, after a happy married life of nearly forty- five years. They raised a family of ten children, all of whom are now well provided for Levi, one of the sons, is now living on the old homestead, and is working the farm. Mr. Hostetler is remarkably active for one of his years and makes almost daily trips on foot to town, a distance of a mile and a half. As a pedestrian he will hustle many of the young men of to-day. His eyesight is yet good with the aid of glasses, and in conversation his mind gives no evidence of weakness usually the case in persons of such an advanced age. He uses the pipe and the weed, but does not indulge to excess in this habit. He also chewed tobacco, but be suddenly abandoned that habit at a moment when his wife was on her deathbed, she having convinced a dislike to his breath on account of the habit. In early days Mr. Hostetler was a hunter of considerable note, and related to the writer several thrilling adventures he had with bear and buck deer. On one occasion he had a close encounter with a large black she bear and her two cubs. Not being armed at the time, he attacked him with a club. The bear suddenly turned upon him, and would undoubtedly have made a subject for a funeral in the neighborhood had it not been for his faithful dog "Smoke," who attacked the enemy in the rear; but "Smoke" was knocked out in the first round by a well directed blow from the paw of bruin. By this time, however, Mr. H. was relieved from his perilous predicament by the arrival on the scene of one of his sons with the old family rifle, and bruin was soon made to bite the dust. The carcass was skinned and the hide afterwards sold to Benjamin Davitt, of Waterloo. Mr. Hostetler has been a member of the old Mennonite creed for the past twenty years, and is a Reformer in politics. He is openly opposed to the prohibition movement. The extent of his drinking is a glass of beer now and then, and while he does not tolerate intemperance he is inclined to the belief that absolute prohibition is contrary to constitutional rights and not in keeping with our much vaunted liberty and freedom. In his home Mr. Hostetler makes the stranger feel at ease by his generous hospitality, and the happy vein in which he recites events of the past.

    Christian Hostetler Passes Away

Death claimed another of our citizens in the person of Mr. Christian Hostetler, who passed away early on Friday morning last at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 3 days. He had enjoyed the best of health up to Sunday previous to his death, when he took ill with appendicitis, which was the cause of his demise. His death came as a shock to his many friends, few only knowing of his short and fatal illness.
The late Mr. Hostetler was a son of the late Mr. Moses Hostetler and was born on the homestead just east of the village on March 14th, 1846. He farmed for a short time in Wellesley and East Zorra, but for upwards of twenty years, owned the farm now occupied by his son, Harry, on Snyder's Road, opposite the old homestead. About four years ago he retired from farming and moved to town.
The late Mr. Hostetler was a lifelong resident of this neighborhood and was highly respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was married three times. His first wife was Elizabeth Zimmerman and their union was blessed with three children, Allen, of New Hamburg, Lavina (Mrs. Rudolph Roth) of East Zorra, and Norman, of Wilmot. His second wife was Magdalena Roth with whom he had two sons, Walter, on the former John Ruthig farm, and Harry, on the homestead. Besides his children he is now mourned by his third wife, Elizabeth Goetz. He also leaves four brothers and two sisters, namely, David and Levi Hostetler, of Wilmot, Daniel of Berlin, Henry of Wellesley, and Mrs. Solomon Shantz and Mrs. Emmanuel Hammacher, of Wilmot.
The funeral took place from his late home to Hostetler's Church and Cemetery on Monday afternoon. A very large concourse of sorrowing relatives paid their last tribute of respect to the departed. Quite a number of relatives were here from the United States to attend the funeral. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad loss.

    Lafayette Hostetler Called By Death

Lafayette Hostetler, well known resident of New Hamburg passed away at his home here Monday morning at the age of 84, after a lingering illness. He had been seriously ill for a week before his demise. In the passing of Mr. Hostetler, the community lost a citizen who spent much time and effort furthering the interests of the town. He had been treasurer of the municipality for some 25 years until retiring from that position about ten years ago. Mr. Hostetler was an honorary life member of the Board of Trade for more than 30 years and was a member of the New Hamburg Planning Board until failing health required him to give up those positions in recent years. He was artistically inclined and suggested the design for the official crest of the village. He also served as manager of the local telephone office for more than 20 years. The late Mr. Hostetler was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church and served as choir leader of that church for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters. Born in Huron County August 16, 1871, he was a son of the late David Hostetler and the former Sarah Morningstar, and spent the greater part of his life in New Hamburg. As a young man he learned the watch-making trade and operated a jewellery store here for a time before moving to Toronto for several years. Shortly after the end of the first world war he returned to New Hamburg and opened an optical parlor in which he was engaged until about five years ago. He is survived by his wife, the former Bertie Ernst; a son, Orville, of St. Catherines; a daughter, Mrs. W. C. (Grace) McClure, Hamilton, and one grandchild. The body rested at Futher-Omand Funeral Home until Wednesday when removal was made to Zion Evangelical U.B. Church for a memorial service, with internment following in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. M. E. Reuber, pastor, officiated. Pallbearers were Reginald Pfaff, Eugene Hofstetter, Lawrence Ruth, Harry Borth, William Murray and Robert Murray..

    L. HOSTETLER.

The only jeweller in New Hamburg is one of the younger business men Mr. L. Hostetler. He is climbing the ladder of success round after round and is bound to go to the top. For a place the size of his town, he carries a remarkably large stock of watches, clocks and jewellry. His store, which is large and well lighted, is literally filled with merchandise. Even to the uninitiated, it is evident that pat-rons need not go to a larger centre for jewellry when such a store is in their midst. And then there is an abundance of silverware, optical goods, fancy and musical goods, including phonographs. Mr. Hostetler is a skilled watchmaker, both experience in the best shops and attendance at the Toronto Horological
Institute combining to make him one. He enjoys a very extensive and lucrative repair trade, he and an assistant be-ing kept busy. Mr. Hostetler is popular with all classes.

He was among the first class of students in the Ontario Mennonite Bible School in early 1907 and on 13 October 1907 was ordained as a minister for the Blenheim Mennonite Church, his home congregation. On 24 July 1938 he was ordained as a bishop, particularly to serve the congregation at Clarence Center, New York. However he died before he was able to make any visits as bishop to that congregation.

As was common for his day, Shantz did not have much formal education, though he had a life-long interest in reading. His personality was empathetic, an asset in his pastoral relationships. He had a good memory for names, and related easily to persons of many backgrounds. His preaching style was "heart to heart" rather than "sermonizing." A co-worker, S. F. Coffman , described Shantz as "a remarkable helper to others on account of his deeply sympathetic nature. He could enter into their problems with understanding and appreciation; he felt with them their burdens and and their sorrows; then, with the most kindly manner, he led them to wise decisions and to the comfort of Christian attitudes in all of their problems."

His administrative gifts led Moses H. Shantz to numerous leadership roles both in his area conference and within the larger Mennonite Church. He served as moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario from 1922-1932, and again from 1934-1936. From 1932-1934 he was assistant moderator. He became Vice-President of the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario in 1929 when missions activity within the conference was reorganized, and he served in that role until 1936. In his active promotion of mission work, Shantz traveled often to the mission stations. He also served on the oversight board for the Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

Within the denomination Shantz served on the Canadian Section of the Peace Problems Committee, and a number of times on the Committee on Arrangements for General Conference. In 1933 he was elected as Vice-President of the Mennonite Publication Board, and in 1935 became President of that Board, serving until his death.

Moses H. Shantz suffered health (heart) problems in his later years, and his premature death removed a calm, mediating voice from the Ontario Mennonite scene at a time when fractious doctrinal issues created tension within the conference. His stature in the Mennonite community is indicated by the number of persons who attended his funeral -- over one thousand in all, including visitors from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York.
