    STADELBAUER, Shirley

Shirley always said that she wanted to die with her boots on … and she did! Family was by her side on Thursday, February 22, 2018 in Cambridge, Ontario. Shirley always enjoyed life, overcoming a few obstacles in the way such as being diagnosed at age 30 with MS, enduring a broken marriage as well as the death of a daughter, Mary Elizabeth in 1952; the death of a grandson Billy in 2005 and the loss of two loves - Reg in 1991 and Roy in 2002. Shirley loved to travel and loved to retreat to her rented house in southern France. She visited Switzerland, Austria, the British Isles and western Germany; took cruises to St. Petersburg, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. She played golf up to her later years, loved reading and eagerly attended her book club. She also enjoyed meeting with her friends at their bridge club. She had a real flair for gardening and handiwork such as knitting, needlepoint, rug-hooking and crafts and was an avid ballroom dancer and enjoyed attending the opera. Shirley donated a lot of her years to volunteering at the hospital in Grimsby, the Literary Society in Beamsville, the Cancer Society in Beamsville as transportation convenor and taught breast self-examination to groups of women and girls. She volunteered and went to Romania to work in a Spital, a hospital for mentally-challenged children. This was after Ceausescu was assassinated. She brought back many memories from Romania, some of which were very sad but also an enlightened view of the results of living under a communist regime and dictator. Shirley worked as an Insurance Agent and obtained her CLU and was also employed with the Department of Corrections, spending eight years at the local Training School for Girls. She always maintained that these girls were not "bad" but rather, a product of poor circumstances. Life at the cottage was one of her most memorable times. Mom loved getting together and spending invaluable time with all of her family and friends and watching the interaction between the cousins and re-establishing family connections. Shirley was born in Preston, Ontario in 1925 and had one sister, Bev Coates. She was educated in Preston and graduated from McDonald Institute in Guelph. She took several courses in Political Science at Brock University. At age 19 she joined the WRCNS and was stationed in Galt, Cornwallis and Halifax. After that experience, she married Jim Ballantyne and had four beloved children - Mary Elizabeth (deceased), Leslie Burns (Bill), Deborah Ballantyne, and Nancy Osborn (Peter). She treasured her grandchildren, Christine (Christopher), Emily, Willy, William (deceased), Bob, Matthew (Abbie), and Ryan (Kseniya). Shirley adored her great-grandchildren, Mason, Conner, Payden, Kyla, Avery, Noah, Oliver, and Elliott. She will be remembered by her stepchildren Leslie King (Michael), Judy Daniels, Leonard Hicks (Janice) as well as her step-grandchildren Michaela, Camille and Sydney. Shirley was very interested in politics and any chance she got, she would bring up the subject to all who would listen. She and her friend, Tita Magor would get together every Saturday night for a martini, dinner and a movie which the affectionately termed "Saturday Night at the Movies". On Sunday mornings they would watch "Politics 101" which consisted of Meet the Press, Fareed Zakaria, and Candy Crowley. Shirley will be dearly missed by her many friends but her memory will live on in all of our hearts. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of Hilltop Manor and Granite Landing for their compassionate care. Visitation will take place at the T. Little Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, Cambridge (519-623-1290) on Friday, March 2nd from 4: 00 - 7: 00 p.m. The Celebration of Life Service will be held in the T. Little Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11: 00 a.m. The burial at Hagey Cemetery will be private .
