    EDWARD J. MERKEL

    PRESTON. Jan. 23--Illness of a months duration culminated in the death yesterday of Edward John Merkel, 72, husband of Elisabeth Illing. Born in Preston, the late Mr. Merkel, with the exception of 12 years, lived all his life here and was one of the town's better known citizens. Originally employed with the Guggisburg Furniture, the deceased was later connected with the Canadian Office and School Furniture Company. In 1890 he moved to New Hamburg where he remained for 11 years before going to Wiarton. Remaining at the latter place for a year and a half he returned to Preston. In 1902, being employed with the Canadian Office and School Furniture since that time. A member of St. Peter's Lutheran church the deceased was church councillor and treasurer of the church for a number of years and was also a member of Preston Lodge A F and A M and of the Canadian Order of Foresters. Keenly interested in baseball he was a regular attendant at local games. He was also interested in hockey. Surviving are his wife, one son. three brothers, Henry of Preston, William of Kitchener and Charles of London. The remains are at his home, 740 Hamilton street, Preston, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2.30 pm. Interment will be made in the Preston Cemetery.

    MERKEL, E. Irvin I.

    Of 138 Dover Street S., Cambridge, on Monday, March 18, 1996, in his 90th year. Beloved husband of the late Olga May (nee Wrigley), dear father of James I. of Barrie, Elizabeth A. (Mrs. Roger McCleary) of Regina, Sask. Also survived by two granddaughters, Jennifer A. and Jessica E. Mr. Merkel, was born in Preston and was a resident of Cambridge (P) his entire life. He was educated at Preston Public School and Galt Colligate Institute and worked at the Bank of Montrael, Canada Sand Papers Ltd., Preston Furniture Co. Ltd. and C.O.S.F. Ltd. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a life member of Preston Masonic Lodge. Irv was a devoted and respected member and past president of the Rotary Club of Cambridge (Preston-Hespeler) and served as Club Historian, for many years. He had over 50 years of perfect attendance with the Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow, at the 3rd level. Rotary was a prominent part of Irv's life. Throughout his life he served the community he lived in, with dedication and distinction, taking on a wide range of voluntary responsibilities. A Private Family Service will take place. Interment in Preston Cemetery.
