Dr. Roy Hemmerich Dies Playing Golf

Dr. Roy G. Hemmerich, 60, one of Kitchener's better known dentists and the man who pioneered dental care for residents at the Arctic, died Saturday of a heart attack while playing golf at Westmount Golf and Country Club. He inaugurated the far northern dental care in 1949 at the request of the government after he had made a trip into the north aboard the Hudson Bay supply ship Nascopie in 1945. The RCAF flew him into the north, where he set up a portable chair wherever space could be found, from a recreation room to a garage. For the Eskimos and army personnel, the yearly trip by Dr. Hemmerich was their one chance to get dental care. People lined up to see him, many flying in from outside posts. Because of this the modest Kitchener man became known as Canada's most popular dentist. He made three trips into the Arctic, travelling farther north than any other member of the profession. His cousin, Lorne, associated with him in practice, made one trip. One Canadian dentist has made the trip each year since the service was started by Dr. Hemmerich. Dr. Hemmerich practised his profession in Kitchener since 1927 after his graduation from the University of Toronto dental school. He lived at 90 Rusholme Rd. He was born July 13, 1903, in Preston, son of the late Mr and Mrs. John Hemmerich. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Gyro Club and the Inter County Dental Society. In 1927 he married the former Onnerene Hagen, who survives. Surviving also are a son, Bruce of Kitchener, a daughter, Mrs. William (Barbara) Green of Ottawa, a sister, Mrs. Dalton Ella Wismer of Preston and five grandchildren. One son and one sister predeceased him. The body will be at the Gruhn Funeral Home until tomorrow noon, then at the Church of the Good Shepherd where Rev. Paul Zacharias will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Preston Cemetery.
