    Conrad Bitzer

A man respected and beloved among all Germans in Waterloo County and even far beyond its borders, was called by death on Tuesday evening at 10 o'clock, namely Conrad Bitzer, local lawyer. In the previous week, he was affected by a nervous fever; a few days ago, strong drops in blood pressure also occurred, so that there was concern for his life. On Monday, he was somewhat better again, but the improvement did not last, and on Tuesday evening, death occurred.

The deceased was born January 11, 1853 in Preston. His parents later moved to Bridgeport and here, he attended school. When he was 15 years old, his parents moved to Salem, and the young man came to Berlin and entered St. Jerome's College. A few years later, he prepared himself at the high-school here for the entrance exam to university. In 1879, he obtained the title, "B.A." at the University of Toronto. In 1882, he obtained the degree of lawyer, and soon after, he entered into partnership here with Mr. A. Millar. Ten years later, he opened his own private office.

The deceased played a prominent role in the life of the municipality. He was in succession, councillor, reeve, and was elected mayor of the town in 1892. For many years, he was a member of the public school board, and at the time of his death, he was the chairman of the high-school board. In politics, Mr. Bitzer was an avid Liberal, who, apparently unawares, was valued as much by his opponents, as by his fellow party members. In 1900, he was nominated Liberal candidate for North Waterloo, but later, resigned his candidacy. He was always warmly interested in St. Jerome's College and in 1898, was elected president of its alumni association. The deceased is survived by his widow, née Lindner, as well as five sons and one daughter. The sons are: Arno (presently at Toronto University), Leon (in the local Bank of Hamilton), Armin, Medon, and Wilfrid; the name of the daughter is lrmgard. Burial will take place Friday afternoon at 2: 30 o'clock, with a funeral service in St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

    PROMINENT BARRISTER PASSES AWAY

    A. L. Bitzer Died Suddenly at His Home in Kitchener.
    Funeral Largely Attended.

Twin-City friends learned with sincere regret of the passing of a prominent Kitchener barrister, Mr. Arno L. Bitzer, who died suddenly at his home early Sunday morning five hours after retiring. Death was due to heart trouble. He was in his 51st year. He enjoyed usual health and the day before his death mowed the lawn and in the evening enjoyed a social evening with friends at his home. At two o'clock in the morning he became ill and two hours later was dead. The doctor who was at Mr. Bitzer's bedside before he passed away attributed death to a blood clot. The late Mr. Bitzer for many years took an active interest in civic affairs, church and politics. He was the efficient treasurer for twenty-three years for both the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Seminary and Waterloo College, and was secretary of the North Waterloo Liberal Association for a long term of years. He was particularly interested in New Canadians and helped scores of German immigrants. He was largely instrumental in the reorganization of the Old German Club. Born in Kitchener, April 6th, 1883, a son of the late Conrad Bitzer, he attended the public and collegiate schools and entered the School of Law, Toronto University, graduating in 1906, following which he took over the law practice of his father. He was married to Miss Huehnergard, who survives along with his mother, three brothers, A. M, Bitzer of Toronto, M. A. Bitzer, Johnson City, Tenn., and W. L. Bitzer of Kitchener, and one sister, Miss Irmgard Bitzer, of Kitchener. Hundreds of relatives and friends and business associates attended the funeral held on Wednesday afternoon. A private service was held at the residence at 2.30 o'clock, followed by a public service at St. Matthew s Lutheran Church at 3 o'clock. An impressive sermon was preached by the pastor, Rev. J. Schmieder. Interment was made in Mount Hope cemetery.

    Obituary for Paul Jewitt Bitzer

Paul Jewitt Bitzer Died peacefully after a brief illness, May 12, 2020 at Grand River Hospital, at the age of 88. Dearly missed by his wife of 48 years, Barbara, his two daughters, Elizabeth (Sarish) and Katherine (Noël), and his five grandchildren, Meghan, Maden, Liam, Renée and Felix. Predeceased by his parents Armin and Henrietta Bitzer. Sadly missed by his sister Joan and brother-in-law Lew Bradich, nieces and nephews Tim, David, Janet and Sue, and their families. Also missed by his in-laws in England, Howard and Megan, Margaret and David, and their families.

Paul was born in Toronto but his family returned to Kitchener, and the Bitzer ancestral property, when he was nine years old. He attended KCI and then Waterloo College (now WLU) where he was president of the student body and editor of the Keystone yearbook. After graduation he continued at Carlton University in public administration for two years and in 1955 began work as a civil servant in the Saskatchewan government of Tommy Douglas, cementing his lifelong involvement with the NDP and earlier CCF parties. In 1957 he returned to Ontario and began his career teaching French which took him north to Thessalon and Dryden, and later Peterborough (where he and Barbara met) and finally back to Kitchener where he retired from teaching in 1989.

Paul was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada, and in his earlier years was very active in Christian Education work for boys and as a director of United Church camps. As a member of Trinity United Church in Kitchener, he served faithfully in Waterloo Presbytery and on the Board of Governors at St. Paul's College. He was a dedicated member of the Canadian Methodist Historical Society, and volunteered extensively with organizations that focused on human rights and compassionate care. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather (Conrad Bitzer) and his father, Paul also served in local politics. Elected as Alderman for the Kitchener City Council from 1977-79, he was proud of his role in helping to launch the Centre in the Square.

Always interested in the needs of others, he became closely involved with many refugee families from Kosovo, acting as sponsor, mentor and generous financial backer. He developed a special friendship with Valdet Osdautaj and his family, and we would like to thank them for their continued interest and support even as his abilities began to decline. While the onset of Alzheimer's slowly eroded his memory and diminished his mobility, it did not rob him of his personality or smile. We thank Sunnyside's Community Alzheimer Program for the support he received through their weekly gatherings, and all the PSWs who visited him daily. Their care and compassion was much appreciated.

Paul loved meeting and connecting with people. He delighted in visits to England and in car trips that took his family all across Canada. His passion for history, politics and all things British resulted in an impressive book collection, lovingly gathered from bookshops near and far over the years. Paul will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his encyclopedic knowledge, his joy in finding bargains, his love of food (especially forbidden desserts), his predilection to correct everyone's grammar, and above all his pride in his family.

Paul's funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 17 at 2pm. Please join us via livestream: https://www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming As expressions of sympathy, donations to Amnesty International Canada or The United Church of Canada - Mission and Service Fund would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
