After Mr. Rally's departure the services appear to have been taken for a short time by the Rev. Wm. Clotworthy, who was succeeded by Rev. Henry Mellish in 1860.

Rev. M. Mellish remained for fourteen years and appears to have become very much attached to his charge and they to him and his estimable family, as at his death in Caledonia, where he afterwards removed, his last wish was to be buried at St. James'.

Church of England, An Historical Sketch of the Parish of Wilmot 1828-1913, Diocese of Huron, Ontario, New Hamburg, Canada by Charles James Fox, Sep 1913

    ________________

During the latter part of Mr. Rally's stay in the Parish he was assisted by the Rev. H. F. Mellish, who assumed sole charge of New Hamburg together with Wilmot in 1869 [1860] and relinquished both in 1873.

Mr. Mellish was a bachelor and made his home for a time with T. R. Smith, South Wilmot. After his marriage he lived in a house on the lot now occupied by the dwelling of Mrs. Guthrie in Haysville, in which village the various Rectors have since continued to reside.

Services were then also organized at Shakespeare, the Rector of Stratford and Mr. Mellish taking the Sunday services alternately.

Among a list of candidates confirmed at Shakespeare in 1864 were Joseph, Harriet and Catharine McNichol, of South Easthope, and the marriage of James McNichol, of the same place, afterwards a prominent cattle dealer of Washington, to Catharine Gable, of Blenheim Township, is also chronicled.

The Rev. Mr. Mellish did all his parish work on horseback and his black mare "Flora" purchased from Wm. Crowe Smith about fifty years ago, was a familiar sight on the highroads.

He also essayed the keeping of sheep, with what success we are not told, but one can imagine that his human flock would be more in his line.

Among the chattels which the Parish possessed at this time was a portable organ, which was carried about by the Rector from place to place as required and which, no doubt, contributed its share to the general harmony of the Parish.

Mr. Mellish was succeeded in 1873 by the Rev. Peter Fox, M. A., an Irishman, who remained until 1876. ....

In 1860 the Rev. Mr. Mellish took charge of Wilmot and the Rev. Mr. Rally removed to New Hamburg, taking the work at St. George's. For a time Mr. Mellish boarded, but after his marriage he lived in a wagon shop converted into a Rectory.

About 1864, during Mr. Mellish's incumbency, land was bought for a site for a Church and Rectory. The Church, a frame one, was soon erected on the ground which now constitutes the present Rectory garden.

It served its purpose for twenty-six years, or until about 1890, when it was sold for fifty dollars and removed to Clayton Farm, where, we understand, it is used for a hen house and in which no doubt its feathered inhabitants endeavor to preserve a gravity and dignity becoming the edifice which shelters them and^ if environment counts for anything, ought to be good hens and good chickens.

A frame parsonage was also erected on the Church land and was used as a residence by the various clergymen of the Parish until the present one was built in 1884.

In 1873, during Mr. Mellish's term, the first confirmation service was held in Christ Church, Bishop Hellmuth ofiiciating.

On Monday the remains of the late Rev. Henry Mellish were laid to rest in St. James churchyard, Huron road, beside his wife, who died seven years ago. Forty years ago the late Mr. Mellish was appointed to this parish, where he labored successfully for fourteen years, when he was removed to Mount Pleasant , where he remained two years, and then he went to Caledonia, where he remained as pastor up to the time of his death. A month ago he had a slight stroke, but kept on with his work. Two weeks later be had another stroke and partly lost the use of one side. He then went to Toronto for treatment and was in the doctor's office with his daughter, Mrs. A. Diamond, of Toronto, at whose house he was staying, when he got another stroke. He was taken home in a cab and other doctors were summoned, but the final call had come and he gradually passed away. The remains were taken to Caledonia and on Monday morning to Bright accompanied by his son Herbert, his son- in-law, Mr. A. Diamond, of Toronto, his brother, Mr. R. Mellish, of Galt, and Mr. Diamond, of Brantford. A large number of parishioners attended the funeral. The pall bearers were Messrs. William and Robert Kerr, T. R. Smith, Thos. Puddicombe, C. D. Brown and R. C. Tye and the Rev. James Ward conducted the funeral services. Our departed friend was 71 years old and leaves one son and four daughters to mourn the loss of a kind father.

    Notes:

Fred William Mellish was born in Galt on April 11, 1860, the first of the six children of Robert F. and Louisa Mellish. Fred Mellish received his early education in private schools and at the Galt Collegiate Institute. Possibly given an interest in the building trades by his father who was a painter, Mr. Mellish first trained as a carpenter and a builder with a view to eventually becoming an architect. It is unclear exactly when Mr. Mellish began his practice as an architect but he registered with the Ontario Association of Architects on March 21, 1891 at the age of 30. However, he was active in the profession prior to that date. He opened his offices in Room 23 in the Imperial Block on South Water St. in January 1890 but it is reported that previously he had designed and supervised the construction of quite a number of important buildings including, in 1890, the Scott Block. The list of Mr. Mellish's buildings erected after 1891, however, is impressive. It includes the Galt Hospital (1891), one of the few buildings he built of stone rather than brick; the Gore Mutual Insurance Company Head Office at Main and Ainslie (1895); the two-storey section of the Galt Market Building (1896); the Galt Fire Hall (1898); and the Galt Carnegie Library (1905). In addition he was responsible for a number of other commercial blocks in Preston and other towns in the area as well as a number of private residences, including a house on Main Street reportedly built for his bride Helen Isabel who sadly died at the age of 24 in May 1886 following the birth of her daughter. In 1908 Mr. Mellish moved to Vancouver where he was worked as an architect and contractor from 1909 to about 1920. In the west Mr. Mellish worked mainly as a designer of houses during the real estate boom of 1912-1913 but is known to have designed a warehouse and St. Saviour's church and parish hall. Upon retirement, he continued to reside in Vancouver and, in 1919, built a craftsman-style house for himself, his wife Agnes and their daughter Winnifred. He died in Vancouver on April 15, 1928 at the age of 68.

    MELLISH, Frederick William (1860-1928)
of Galt, Ont. was the son of Robert Mellish, a painter & glazier in Galt, and was born there on 11 April 1860. He was educated at private schools and at Galt Collegiate Institute and later received training as a carpenter and builder. In 1888 he opened an office in Galt and during the course of the next two decades he obtained several important commissions for institutional buildings and commercial blocks in that town. Mellish was adept at working in a variety of styles, ranging from a simplified Scottish baronial, evident in his design for the Galt Hospital, 1889, to the monumental Beaux-Arts style, employed in his scheme for the Carnegie Library in Galt in 1903. He was among the first architects in Western Ontario to introduce the classical vocabulary of the Beaux-Arts style to public architecture in that region of the province. In 1909 Mellish moved to British Columbia and opened an office in Vancouver, perhaps to capitalise on the rapid development of that city, but only a few references to his work there have been found. He died in Vancouver on 16 April 1928 (death notice in the Vancouver Sun, 16 April 1928, 12; biography in M. Bixby, Industries of Canada: London, Owen Sound, Collingwood, Barrie...., 1890, 107; biography and port. in W. Cochrane, The Canadian Album-Men of Canada, ii, 1893, 154; D.
