Local News: Died. - Suddenly while attending service in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, at Berlin, last Sunday forenoon, Mrs. Wagner, widow of the late Jonas Wagner of Floradale. Her remains were brought to Floradale yesterday and will there be interred in the Lutheran cemetery. Deceased was one of the oldest residents of Floradale, having lived there until about a year ago when she removed to Berlin where one of her daughters, Mrs. C. H. Doerr resides.

Dies in Church

The fourth sudden Death in Berlin since New Year's

The widow Magdalena Wagner died a sudden death on Sunday morning in St. Paul's Lutheran Church here. The elderly lady had not been healthy for a long time, but decided to go to church again because of the lovely weather. It was her last walk. She had scarcely sat down in the church, when she suddenly collapsed, and had to be carried into the sacristy, helpless. Dr. G.H. Bowlby was summoned, but he discovered that death had already occurred, as a result of a heart attack. The body was transported by ambulance to the residence of the deceased on Wellington Street. Burial took place on Wednesday in Floradale after a funeral service at 9 a.m. in St. Paul's Church here. The deceased was born near Strassburg in 1836, married Heinrich Wager in 1856 (he died five years ago). They settled in Floradale, and approximately a year ago, she came to Berlin. Six children survive the deceased, namely - John, in Grafton, N.D.; Heinrich and Mrs. C.H. Miff in Berlin; Mrs. C.H. Heimbach in Ayr; Mrs. R. Tanner in Guelph; and Mrs. G. Lackner in Floradale. This is the fourth sudden death in Berlin since New Year's. The three previous ones were: the teacher, Miss Woods; Heinrich Knell, Jr.; and George Wettlaufer.

King Street Kitchener

Benton to Eby Etreet.-Successive occupation was as follows: From Benton Street easterward, before 1855, a one-story brick building with gable facing King Street was erected at the corner and used by Jacob Benner as blacksmith shop. Later Benner moved to West Montrose and the next occupant was Valentine Gildner and after him his son John Gildner. This blacksmith shop continued until comparatively recent years. A frame building painted white, with veranda in front, was Gildner s residence..

Vacant lot.

A tinsmith shop owned by Mr. Lehnen. This had a nice front with two good-sized glass windows on either side of the door.

A dwelling house built by Henry Rothaermel 1848-9. He was a carpenter and later was market clerk and tax collector.

A lane.

A one and one-half story building, with gable facing King Street and a verandah extending over the sidewalk, occupied by a Mr. Coleman 1855-1860. Adjoining it was a warehouse. 1 he store passed to Coleman's son and then to John Kegel. Later John George Schmidt, shoemaker, occupied the building.

. A lane.

A double, frame building about 50 feet along King St.; the east half used as a dwelling had a veranda; the west half was occupied by Charles Koehn, shoemaker.

Open space.

Dwelling of Gabriel Bowman, carpenter, who built the house.

A one and one-half story building occupied by Balzar Allendorf, a coverlet weaver, about 1840. Allendorf later moved to New Hamburg. There was a veranda at the front of the house and under it a well. Cattle ran at large in the streets at this time and one Sunday afternoon a steer got on the veranda floor, which was partly rotted, broke through, fell into the well and had to be pulled out by means of a windlass. The building was torn down later.

In 1855 there was a frame building one and one-half story high along Kmg Street divided into two parts, one part a dwelling and the other part a hat shop, owned by John Kidder, who made felt hats and old-fashioned bonnets. The shop was a few steps above the sidewalk level.

A dwelling.

A one and one-half story frame building lengthwise with King street occupied by a widow, Mrs. Caroline Lehnen.

A driveway.

A two story brick building with gable toward King Street, occupied by J. J. Lehnen, son of the widow Lehnen, as a copper and tinsmith shop and a store. Lehnen made his own tinware. Later Jacob Doebler occupied this building as a bakery.

A one and one-half story frame building with gable toward King Street occupied by George Yantz, a cabinet maker. He had a tavern in this same building for a time, and lived there.

In the early years a garden.

A small shop with sloping roof used by Christian Enslin as a book store and book-bindery, the first book-bindery in Berlin Enslm arrived in Berlin about 1830. Jacob Stroh remembers going with his father to the store to buy school supplies. Enslin later was editor, for Henry Eby, the publisher, of the Deutsche Canadier which began publication in 1840.

Enslin's House, one-half story, frame, standing lengthwise with King Street and having a veranda over the door, was on the site of Dr. Hetts present office and house. At the rear there was an orchard.

About 60 feet back of King Street there was a house built by Henry Eby. Shubel Randall, brother of George Randall, lived in it later. In 1860 the building was destroyed by fire and a servant girl Dina Hertz, perished in the flames. The walls remaining standing, the house was re-built, and is still in use.

A brick building, abutting on King Street with gable facing the street, was Henry Eby's printing office. The main floor was she or seven feet above the sidewalk level. In 1860 this building was changed to a church and was the first Anglican Church in Berlin.

A frame building, one end of which was used by Henry Bowman as a general store; he lived in the other end. This was known as the Bowman building. Later William Stein had a tailor shop in it and after him William Thoms used it as a shoe repair shop.

EBY. - On Sept. 21st 1895, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., Hannah, wife of David Eby, aged 46 years and 23 days. A sorrowing husband and four young children, one son and three daughters, mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. She was for many years a consistent member of the Mennonite church. Buried Sept. 23rd in the C. Eby cemetery, on which occasion S. Bowman and Moses Erb preached appropriate funeral sermons.

Weber. - Sister Susannah Bowman, beloved wife of Bro. Levi M. Weber, was born in Waterloo County, Ont., on Sept. 8, 1852 and died at the home of her son-in-law, Bro. Joseph Cressman, Kitchener, Ont., on Sept. 11, 1920. The cause of her death was heart trouble and dropsy. Her age was 68 y. 3 d. There were eleven children in the family, seven of whom survivie, viz., Leah, wife of Pre. Moses Schmitt; and Jeremiah of Saskatchewan, Melissa, wife of Harvey Bricker; Abram and Burton of Alberta; Melinda, wife of Joseph Cressman, Kitchener, and Susannah, wife of S. S. Shantz, missionaries at Jebba, West Africa. Funeral on Sept. 15. Service at the house by Bro. U. K. Weber and at the First Mennonite Church by the Brethren Jonas Snider and Allan Good.

Shantz. Lydia U. Bowman, widow of the late Jacob E. Shantz, was born April 14, 1855; died at the home of her son-in-law, Anson Hallman, Preston, Ont., Jan. 3, 1929; aged 73 y. 8 m. 20 d. Her husband died Mar. 31, 1922. She is survived by 2 sons, 1 daughter, 14 grandchildren; also 3 brothers and 1 sister ( Benj. Bowman, Kitchener; Joseph, New Hamburg; Allan, New Dundee; and Mrs. Jacob Hallman, Detroit, Mich.). She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for fifty years. She was stricken with a paralytic stroke on Oct. 10, 1925, from which she never fully recovered. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Jonas Snider and at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, by Bro. C. F. Derstine. Text, Rev. 14: 13.

Biehn. - Mary U. Bowman, beloved wife of Aaron S. Biehn, near Guernsey, Sask., passed away on Sept. 25, 1924; aged 61 y. 1 m. She was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 26, 1863. On Oct. 24, 1882, she was married to Bro. Biehn. This union was blessed with 5 sons and 1 daughter. In the year 1905 they moved to Saskatchewan, where they resided till her demise. Five weeks before she died she was found to have a cancer of the stomach, and with much suffering yet with Christian fortitude she calmly awaited her end. Her sick chamber was a scene of inspiration to those privileged to visit with her, as she was rejoicing in the prospect of her coming glory. Valuable parting admonitions were given to her children. The services at the house were conducted by I. S. Rosenberger, and at the Sharon Mennonite Church by Henry Bartel in German and E. S. Hallman in English. Text, I Cor. 15: 51,52. The remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Kitchener Woman Expires Suddenly While On Way Home

Mrs. Charles H. Doerr Died At Galt Where She Had Obtained Medical Advice; Came to Kitchener in 1886

While returning from Galt yesterday afternoon where she had been to obtain medical advice, Mrs. Charles H. Doerr, 136 West Weber street, passed away following an illness from which she had suffered from a number of years. Death overtook her while driving near the golf links on the Galt Preston highway in company with her husband, her maid, Miss Sarah Meyer and a life-long friend Miss Annie Knell. She was in her 59th year. The late Mrs. Doerr was a woman of many fine qualities, her works in the interests of charity and church being invaluable. As a devout member of St. Peter's Lutheran church, she took a deep interest in its welfare. Ill as she was, the late Mrs. Doerr made a weekly visit to sick members of the congregation taking each a little gift to cheer them. When her health permitted she was intensely interested in the welfare of civic institutions, particularly the Y.W.C.A. Besides being a member of the Ladies' Aid Society, she was active in the Dorcas Society and the Mutual Aid Society. Born in Floradale, May 14, 1870 the late Mrs. Doerr came to Kitchener in 1886. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Wagner of Floradale, her maiden name being Susan Wagner. She was united in marriage to Mr. Doerr on November 6, 1888. Besides her husband, there are surviving one grandson Carl Doerr, jr., and three sisters, Mrs. C. H. Heimbach, Kitchener, Mrs. Richard Tanner, Doon, and Mrs. George Lackner, Toronto. The funeral will take place from her late residence where services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2.15 o'clock. Internment will be made in Mount Hope cemetery.

Daniel Stauffer, 84, of 243 Mill St. , died Mon. at St. Mary's Hospital following a lengthy illness. A s/o the late Mr. /Mrs. Daniel Stauffer, he was born July 29, 1880 at Williamsburg. He worked at Mitchell Button Co. Ltd. until retiring 10 years ago. He was a charter member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church. She leaves to mourn her departure her sorrowing husband, 2 sons (Lloyd, Rosebank; Leighton, Petersburg), one daughter (Naomi-Mrs. Ozias Gingrich, Elmira), 10 grandchildren, 3 brothers (Jeremiah, Guernsey, Sask.; Abram, Tofield, Alta.; Burton, Lockport, N.Y.), and one sister (Susie-Mrs. S. S. Shantz, Markham), besides many other relatives and friends. She was a very devoted wife and mother, and will be greatly missed by all. Funeral services were in charge of her pastor, Bro. C. F. Derstine. Theme: "The homegoing of Believers." Brethren M. Hallman, J. B. Martin, and Isaac Miller assisted in the services.

Bricker-Melissa Weber, beloved wife of Bro. Harvey Bricker of Alsask. Sask., was born Dec. 1, 1889, in Waterloo Co., Ont., died in the General Hospital, Calgary, Alta., March 20, 1926; aged 36 y. 3 m. 20 d. She leaves a sorrowing husband with a family of three duaghters (sic) and an adopted son.. Towards fall of 1925 she began to complain of not being well, and as there were no signs of improvement she was brought to the home of Bro. E.W. Bricker, Calgary, where for some time she was under the doctor's care. Later it was decided that an operation was necessary, which took place in the General Hospital, and for some time good hopes were held out for her recovery. She however took a turn for the worse and though many prayers ascended to the throne of grace in her behalf, she gradually became weaker and finally passed on to her reward. While under the hand of affliction she suffered considerably and frequently expressed a desire to leave the world and be with Christ. On March 21 a funeral service was conducted by E. Hansell at the funeral home of Foster & Foster, Calgary, after which the remains were brought to Aldersyde and from there taken to the home of Bro. T.E. Bowman on March 22 where the relatives of the departed sister met and a short service conducted by Bro. I. Miller and then taken to the Mt. View Mennonite Church for funeral service and burial. Services at the church conducted by N.B. Stauffer. Text, Jno. 16: 16, selected by Sister Bricker some weeks before her death. Bro. Bricker has the sympathy of a large circle of the brotherhood and friends who with him in humble submissiveness say, "Thy will be done."

Shantz, Benjamin B., son of Jacob E. and Lydia (Bowman) Shantz, was born at Preston, Ont., June 23, 1880; died at the Bethesda Home, Vineland, Ont., Dec. 17, 1964; aged 84 y. 5 m. 24 d. On March 7, 1906, he was married to Myra Snyder, who survives. In 1909* he was ordained as pastor and in 1939 as bishop of the Hagey Church. He served as bishop in Waterloo County until his retirement. Surviving are 4 sons (Clayton, Gordon, Ralph, and Roy), 4 daughters (Violet - Mrs. Cranson Good, Grace - Mrs. Wesley Metzger, Edna - Mrs. Rae Hilborn, and Marjory, of Puerto Rico), and 14 grandchildren. One sister and one brother predeceased him. He was a member of the Preston Church, where funeral services were held Dec. 19, in charge of Rufus Jutzi, assisted by J. B. Martin and Howard Good.

PETERSBURG - After a lengthy illness, Lloyd Bowman, RR 2, Petersburg, died at the K-W Hospital yesterday. He was 69. Mr. Bowman was born Feb. 8 1883 in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Bowman. His wife, the former Salina Block, whom he married in 1908, survives. Also surviving are four sons, Stanton of New Hamburg, Burton and Walton of Petersburg and Orville of Bright; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Elsie) Bowman of Kitchener and Mrs. John (Audrey) Haunn and Mrs. Harry (Evelyn) Reibling of New Hamburg; three brothers, Angus of Kitchener, Melvin of Drumbo and Nelson of Owen Sound, two sisters, Mrs. G.C. Al? and Mrs. Austin Baer of Kitchener and 12 grandchildren. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home. Double Bereavement

With the sad death of Mr. Webourne Oswell Doerr, on Wednesday evening, following the passing of his wife, whose remains were laid to rest on Wednesday, there has come a double bereavement to this home, the only member of the family remaining being their fourteen months old son. Both young people were victims of the Spanish influenza. A week ago Sunday Mr. Doerr took ill, but despite the most tender nursing and care he succumbed on Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock to pneumonia. The late Mr. Doerr was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Doerr and was born in this city 28 years ago. He received his schooling in Kitchener, including a business course at the business college, after which he was identified with his brother in the wholesale confectionary business. After traveling for a number of years he became assistant manager of the company, which position he had held for the past five years. About two years ago he was married to Miss Merner of Waterloo, who predeceased him only a few days. He leaves his parents and an infant son aged 14 months. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock from the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Doerr, 236 Weber St. West, to Mount Hope cemetery for internment. The late Mr. and Mrs. Doerr were highly esteemed by their hosts of friends, by whom their passing will be deeply mourned. The heartfelt sympathy of a wide acquaintanceship will be extended to the grief stricken parents in the double bereavement which has been experienced.

A memember of the Missionary Society of the church and the Superanuated Teacher's Association of Ontario. Surviving are two brothers, Leighton and Stuart of New Dundee and a sister Hilda (Mrs. Elgin Reist) of New Dundee. She was predeceased by two brothers, Lorne and Delton. Rosenberger, beloved husband of Doris Bechtel Rosenberger. Dear father of Gary Stuart Rosenberger and his wife Mary of St. Catharines. Loving and proud grandfather of Jody, Andrew and Michael. Mr. Rosenberger was predeceased by his parents; three brothers and two sisters and worked at Uniroyal Tire Factory for over 30 years. Stuart and Doris recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on August 30, 1995. The family will receive friends at the Westmount Funeral Chapel, 1001 Ottawa St. S. (At Westmount Rd.), today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday at 1: 30 p.m. Interment New Dundee Union Cemetery.

At St. Mary's Hospital, on Sunday, June 16, 1974, suddenly following a heart attack, Orval Hallman, of Route 1, New Dundee, age 61 years, a member of the Roseville United Brethren in Christ Church; for many years he farmed in the New Dundee area; husband of Merle Becker; father of Bruce, Route 1, Ayr; at home; Linda (Mrs. Nixon), Route 1, Bradford and Luanne at home; brother of Alleeno (Mrs.. Fred Harding), Williamsburg; three grandchildren, Teresa and Lisa Hallman and Tammy Nixon also survive, predeceased by one son Brian in 1965. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St., West, Kitchener, until 11 a.m., Wedneaday, when removal will be made to the Roseville UB Church, for the serviee at 3 p.m., with Rev.
