Mr. I. Hilborn was born at Speedsville, near Preston, Ont. In early manhood he engaged in farming in Waterloo Township and later purchased a farm a short distance south-east of Elmira. Although a successful farmer, he sold out in 1895 and came to Elmira. He became interested in the Winger Woollen and Felt Co. and was Secretary for several years. When the Elmira Felt Co. organized, he became one of the principal stock holders as well as secretary of the company which position has since filled successfully.

    ELMIRA

    SHOE, FELT AND WOOLEN WORKS

Among the manufacturing industries of Elmira the above concern must be reckoned one of the most important, as it gives employment to the largest number of wage-earners and many of them expert and skilled mechanics. It is a part of the old Winger & Weaver Woolen factory. The latter, the first indusdry of note in this town, was established in 1856, by Peter Winger and Samuel Weaver who were prominent among the early settlers in this vicinity. They commenced operations in 1856 and continued to run it until 1873, when Mr. Henry Winger, son of the well known member of the firm, took charge and operated it until 1883, and after that in company with his brother, J. B. Winger, until 1895, at which time they added the felt manufactory. It was then operated by J. B. Winger and Amasa Winger for short one year, when in the spring of 1896, a joint stock company was formed and the plant improved and placed on a more extensive scale. The company is made up of some of the leading and most responsible citzens of the town, viz: Henry Winger, J. B. Winger, Amasa Winger, J. P. Lackhardt, Weber & Erb, M. Weichel, J. S. Weichel, Daniel Ratz, Casper Ziegler, David Snider, Chas. Klinck and son George, Henry Mogk and Isaac Hilborn. Board of Directors: A. H Erb, President; Henry Winger, Daniel Ratz, Casper Ziegler and J. P. Luckhardt, John Peel, Treasurer and general manager.

They manufacture both leather and felt goods, and the class of work turned out is equal in style, workmanship, finish and material to that of any other establishment of the kind in Ontario. There is a steady demand for about all the company can manufacture with their present facilities, most of their goods going to the Northwest and the Maritime Provinces. From twenty-five to thirty hands are employed. The factory is equipped with the latest and best improved machinery, and a walk through the building when all hands are at work will convince any person that experienced workmen are employed and that great care is exercised in putting the material together in a way that must produce a popular and durable article. The very latest styles of footwear are turned out. The company still continues the woolen factory and manufactures fine tweeds, flannels blankets and other woolen goods, and are always prepared for custom work.

At 69 when most men would have thought of retiring, he rebuilt and continued in business until July 1960. The Mennonite people, with whom he had done business for many years, held a "clean-up bee" to remove the rubble, and all Mr. Reichard could do for them was provide a dinner at the hotel.

Born on a farm near Fordwich, Mr. Reichard told how his father, as well as being a farmer, had been a preacher for the denomination known as "Tunkards or River Brethren". There had been a little church on the home farm. Mr. Reichard started work in a Baden general store at $40 a year, plus bed and board. When he was married he made $8 a week. He was a charter member of Wesley United Church, of which he was an elder. Obituary of Ruth Schaefer

Ruth Schaefer (September 21, 1922 \endash December 16, 2019) passed away at home in Penetanguishene after a brief illness in her 98th year.
Ruth was born and raised in Kitchener. She was the only daughter of Goudies Department Store co-founder Robert Goudie and Julia (nee Stockfish) and was married 51 years to Waterloo's first Commissioner of Finance, Don Schaefer. She is survived by her two sons, Jim (Carolyn) and Doug (Mary Ruth), and by her grandchildren Beck, Kathye (Dave), Christa, Paul, Alec and Cameron, as well as great-grandchildren Abby and Emily. Ruth will also be missed by her niece Diane (Rick) Turnbull and nephew Jon (Jane).

Ruth was a proud alumni of Alma College in St. Thomas, where she achieved a commercial diploma and she worked for several years in the family business before marrying Don and settling down in Waterloo to raise her two boys and one schnauzer. She loved old movies and books (especially Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier). She tackled plumbing challenges, early recycling and leaky basements with relish but her favourite times were up at the family cottage on Sauble Beach where she and Don entertained their golfing friends at the "19th hole". All her life, she kept meticulous notes and records on all aspects of family activities that are treasured today by her descendants. She also spent much time caring for her elder relatives in their later years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waterloo.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Gaffney for his dedication, availability, care and wisdom, especially in making her decline comfortable. Thanks also to Lisa from Bayshore Home Care Solutions, who provided palliative nursing with boundless energy and concern for her wellbeing. We also thank all who live and work at Bayfield House Retirement Lodge for their continuing care and compassionate support, especially in Ruth's final days.

The Schaefer family will receive relatives and friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo on Sunday, January 5, 2020 from 12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. followed by a Service of Remembrance in the Chapel of the Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Historic Kuntz House.
