    FOX, Verna Mary

    Verna Mary Fox (Miller) passed away peacefully, on March 30, 2014, in her 85th year, with her daughter and son-in-law, at her side listening to a cherished piano concerto. Verna, daughter of Sarah Margaret Clark and George Edward Miller and sister to John Clayton Miller, was born on August 6, 1928 in Owen Sound, Ontario. Verna graduated from Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute, in 1945, completed her Ontario Teacher's Certificate, in 1947 and in 1948, qualified as a Primary Education Specialist. She attended the University of Toronto, Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, completing an Associate of the Royal Conservatory Toronto, in piano solo performance in 1956. Verna met Douglas Paul Fox ,while singing in the church choir at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Bloor Street. They were married there in 1952 and recently celebrated their 61st anniversary. Verna continued to pursue her love of music and in 1957, met the qualifications for Music Vocal Specialist from the Ontario College of Teachers. Verna and Douglas, began their married life in Etobicoke, where they pursued their love of teaching, welcoming their daughter Elizabeth, in 1959. In 1963, they moved to Ridgeway where Verna taught French and music and piano lessons in her home. A move to Cambridge in 1969, had Verna return to work full time as a beloved kindergarten teacher, for the Waterloo County Board of Education. Verna earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Wilfrid Laurier University, in 1975. She retired from teaching in 2003. Retirement was enjoyed to the fullest with her Musical Matrons Club; Canadian Federation of University Women's Club book, investment and gourmet interest groups; piano and harp lessons; and watercolour painting. Many family holidays were spent in the Ottawa valley, with extended family, and traveling internationally. Verna and Douglas loved long drives in the country, Stratford Festival concerts with friends and the treasured time they spent with their adored grandchildren. Verna is survived by her husband, Douglas P. Fox; daughter, Elizabeth M. Fox and husband Stephan Motz; grandchildren, Elise Robertson, Emily Motz and Alexander Motz; niece Victoria Miller and nephew Robson Miller; goddaughter Beverly Regan and many loved relatives, friends and neighbors. Despite many illnesses during her lifetime, Verna lived a blessed life and will be remembered fondly for her optimism, resolute nature, her appreciation for the beauty in her environment and in those around her, and her ever-present belief in God and His many blessings. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 12 Blair Road, Cambridge, on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 2: 00 p.m., with a reception to follow.
