    Death of Mr. Henry McCrum

It is the deepest regret that we this week announce the death of the above named gentleman, which took place at his residence on Monday morning last, of congestion of the lungs. Mr. McCrum had been a resident of Galt for the past forty five years, having come to the then scattered hamlet on the solicitations of the late Mr. Shade. For several years he was engaged in mercantile pursuits, having been a member of the firm of Russel & McCrum, who carried on business in the old "Red Store", where the Commercial Buildings now stand. He afterwards succeeded the late Mr. John Hearle as clerk of the Division Court, a position which he held for many years. Of late, McCrum had not been engaged in any regular business on his own account, but for a year or so preceding his death he had been book-keeper in Mr. Spiers' office at the oatmeal mill. A man of genial, kindly feeling, he was endeared to a large circle of friends, who deeply regret his death. Mr. McCrum leaves a wife and grown up family, several members of which reside in the United States. He was aged 69 years at the time of his death.

    Honoured:
Postwar, enter park neighbour Dr. Augustus Soper. Dissatisfied with Todd's natural-look ideas and stalled work, he contributed $10,000 and suggested draining wet areas, lining Mill Creek's banks with stone along its entire length, building rustic bridges, laying down driveways and adding amenities such as a swimming pool, midway, sports fields and a huge peony garden.

In return for Soper's ideas and money, Galt rechristened the site Soper Park in 1920 and a new boulevard through the park was named Marion Way after Soper's wife. Most of Soper's suggestions were carried out and for decades, that was the way the park appeared to its many visitors. During the 1990s, the city decided to revert to a more natural look - many features were removed and the creek allowed to return to a more natural state.

    Notes:

Sad Death in the Far West

We regret to state that word was received last week to the effect that Mr. Ed. McCrum \endash third son of the late Henry McCrum of this town, - had been very seriously injured at his ranch in Idaho by the fall of his horse. The information was contained in a letter from his brother, Mr. Chas. McCrum, and was as follows: -

On Train Near Boise, Sept. 22, 1886

Dear Brother, - Edd was badly hurt near his ranch yesterday by his horse falling on him. He was hurt at 9 a.m., and has been unconscious ever since. There are no bones broken, but think his spine is hurt. We are taking him into Boise. He is very badly hurt, but we have hopes of his recovery, I think he has improved since morning.

    Charlie

The information contained in this letter, was of course a terrible blow to his mother and other relatives in Galt, and further news was awaited with great anxiety. A few days had only elapsed before a second letter from Mr. Chas. McCrum was received, to the following effect: -

    Boise, Sept. 23, 1886

Dear Brother \endash We got in last night about 1 o'clock. Edd has been about the same all day as he was yesterday, but at this time, 11:30 p.m., he is resting quietly and I think is better than he has been yet. He has been sleeping since 9 o'clock. He is still unconscious and does not speak. We have the Fort doctor now, but he had to go out to town this a.m., and will not be back until tomorrow morning. He said this a.m. he could tell in twenty-four hours if he could get better and we are anxiously waiting for morning, when the doctor will make his next visit.

As far as I can learn, the accident happened thus: -

He was branding calves, and was after one. He started out to lasso it, and was riding pretty fast, and I think he thought he was going to pass the calf and pulled his horse up to suddenly and threw it back on its haunches, when it fell over on its side, with him underneath. His head was bent back and to one side, almost breaking his neck. There was a man with him and he had to pull the horse off before he could get at Edd. He got him to the ferry and then started out for Mary his wife; then they sent in to Mt. Home and sent dispatches to Boise and myself. I came right down on the night train to Mt. Home, the nearest place to the ferry. I got a horse and started out, but met them brining him in. We had a fearfull trip in so much dust and cold, too.

    Charlie

This letter was written on the 22nd Sept., but enclosed was a note from Mrs. Thomas Davis, of Boise City, - formerly Miss Julia McCrum, of Galt \endash dated September 24th, conveying the melancholy intelligence that poor Eddie had passed away in the interval. He died about 2 o'clock on the afternoon of the 24th, never having regained consciousness after the accident. He was buried on the afternoon of Sunday, 26th Sept.

As we mentioned, Eddie was the third son of Mrs. Hy. McCrum, of Galt, and brother of Charles and Mrs. Thos. Davis, of Idaho. Henry and Richard, of Walkerton, and Fred, and Mrs. Dr. Soper, of Galt. He left this town many years ago for Boise City, Idaho, with his sister, and had done well in his Western home. At the time of his death he was owner of a valuable and well-stocked ranch. He was married some five or six years ago to Miss Mary Cartee, daughter of Col. Cartee, of Boise City, and was looking forward to visiting his old home in Galt before long. His sad death is a heavy blow to his devoted wife and friends in his western home, as well as to his aged mother and other relatives and friends in Galt and neighborhood.
