ALAMANDER WILFONG

The death of Mr. Alamander Wilfong took place at his home in Dunnville yesterday morning at 8.30. He was 65 years, 9 months and 27 days old. Those who survive are his wife and five children.. Mrs. Albert Brown, of Kitchener, John, of Waterloo, Mrs. John Branston, Dunnville, and Wima and Harold at home. Only one sister, Mrs. James Pickard of Toronto sur- vives, another sister, Mrs. Wil- liam Eagle of Hespeler. having pasued away five weeks ago.

The late Mr. Wilfong lived in Kitchener practically all his life until seventeen years ago when he moved to Dunnville. He was in good health until he received the news of the death of his sister five weeks ago.

SAD. The sudden taking away of Mrs. C. H. Chisholm, a former well-known resident of Hespeler, was a shock to all the friends of the family. The sad event took place at Pittsfield, Missouri, U. S., last Thursday of typhoid fever, leaving a very young child. The remains were brought here for interment. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Geo. Haigh. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Chisholm in his affliction. Her parents with their friends from Dundalk, Ont., were all present at the funeral, which was largely attended by Hespeler people.

Menno Wilfong, 87, of 42 Church St., Elmira, died Monday night at K-W Hospital. Born Oct. 13, 1862 at Doon, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wilfong. He came to Elmira at the age of 21 and worked for Jonathan Uttley, general merchant, until Mr. Uttley died. Mr. Wilfong retired 27 years ago. He was a member of Wesley United Church. Surviving are two sons, Frank of Toronto, Charles of Long Branch; two daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Tillie) Watson and Myrtle, both of Elmira. Also surviving are two brothers, Dilmos of Waterloo, Archie of Flint, Mich., a sister, Mrs. Otto Schedler of Kitchener, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two sons predeceased him. His wife, the former Annie Uttley, died in February, 1935. The funeral service will be held at the Driesinger Funeral Parlor Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. with burial in Elmira Cemetery. Rev. W. M. B. Metcalfe of Wesley United Church will officiate.

Relatives in Elmira received the news this week of the death at Doon on Tuesday evening of Nelson Wilfong who passed away suddenly at seven o'clock.

Mr. Wilfong, who was the for over half a century an employee of the Doon Twines of Kitchener, is the father of Mrs. A. Bricker of Elmira and brother of Mr. Menno Wilfong of this town. He was born at Doon where he always resided.

Besides his wife four sons and six daughters survive: Dr. James Wilfong of Philadelphia, Herbert of Kitchener, Gilbert and Reginald of Doon, the Misses Ethel, Marguerite and Doris Wilfong, all of Doon, Mrs. A. Bricker of Elmira, Mrs. W. Spaetzel, Kitchener and Mrs. George Ayres of Doon. The funeral will be held at Doon on Friday afternoon.

FATHER INJURED IN THE RESCUE

A heart-rending fatality took place on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mr. Alamander Wildfong whose residence is in the west ward between the main line and the Galt branch. As a result his bright little two-year-old daughter, that was at two o'clock playing about the yard and laughing and prattling in childish glee, was three hours later a fearfully burnt and disfigured corpse.

The little one was playing about the yard with other little children and one of them set a match to the grass. The flames ran along faster than they knew, and before the little ones were aware of their danger, Florence's clothes were on fire. The child's shrieks for help and her playmates sounding the alarm, brought her father out of the house. He was horrified to see his child enveloped in fire, and tore the flaming clothes off its burning body.

But the help came too late. There was barely an inch of the little one's frame from its feet to the crown of its head that was not burned. One eye was entirety closed; one ear was almost dropping from the head, the mouth was powerless to close. But consciousness remained for over an hour. The babe at times spoke and cried for water, and again it uttered piteous shrieks of pain. It lived only two hours after the accident occurred and toward the last was unconscious. Florence Mable was one of a family of five.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. to St. Peter's Lutheran church.

Post office closed - Freeport post office, which has been in existence for the last 50 years or more, was closed last week by order of the Postmaster General. This office, which was opened in the early sixties. In the old Academy building, (now a mass of ruins), had for its first postmaster Mr. Charles Lutz, only brother Mr. Hy. Lutz of this place. Mrs. Louisa Elenora Parker, 70 Mulberry Drive, died Tuesday in South Waterloo Memorial Hospital. She was 81. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Sauder, she was born in Waterloo County and was a lifelong resident of the Hespeler area. She was member of the Salvation Army Home League. the Hespeler Senior Citizens Club, the Jubilee Women's Institute and Hespeler Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband Sydney in 1955, and also two sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Parker is survived by three sons, Robert of R.R. 2 Hespeler, Jack of R.R. 4 Kitchener and Allan of R.R. 1 Hespeler; five daughters, Mrs. Maurice (Ivy) Martin, Mrs. Stewart (Gladys) Houghton, Mrs. William (Grace) Machin. Friends will be received at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Blvd., from this evening until noon Friday. Flash from the Past: At Louie's you could eat, play pool, buy a magazine

Today the site holds a parking lot used by employees of Sun Life Financial in Waterloo.

But 60 years ago, the King Street block between Grand River Hospital (then Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital) and Sun Life (then Mutual Life Assurance) was chock full of houses and apartments.

And if you walked along the south side of King, you couldn't help but notice the big Louie's sign in front of Louie's Lunch and Louie's Tobacco Shop.

Last week's mystery photo showed the two businesses (they were linked by an interior door) that Louis B. Kenyon (or Louie) and his wife, Alice, ran from roughly 1943 to 1951 at 953 and 955 King St. W., Kitchener - very close to the boundary line between Kitchener and Waterloo. In some years, it appears, they turned the operation of the lunch bar over to others.

Lillian Moore, who today lives in Linwood, was an employee in the Kenyon's lunch bar and lived nearby. Sometime about 1951 she snapped the photo, which was provided for use here by her son, David Moore of Waterloo. That's young David on the left, arm in arm with Roger Kenyon, a grandson of Louis and Alice. He now lives in Goderich.

Mary Fowler of Kitchener also worked at Louie's in those years and remembers the Kenyons as good employers.

"They treated me like a daughter," she says.

Robert Euler of Waterloo phoned to say he recalls going to Louie's as a high school student. He had a passion for bodybuilding and power lifting and visited the shop to buy "muscle magazines."

"He (Louie) had a big magazine rack in the store. I knew exactly what day the magazine would arrive and what time it would be in the store. There could be a blizzard outside, but I would be there to get it."

Sandra Bunsch grew up on Mount Hope Street and regularly walked to Louie's to buy magazines for her grandfather, who always made sure she had change to buy herself a treat.

"That's where I had my first Mello cone (ice cream)," Bunsch said.

"Louie was the most amazing man. He was so personable."

Robert Clair of Kitchener also recalls going to Louie's as a young teenager in the 1940s.

"There was a pool table in the back. The first time I saw it, Mr. Kenyon stopped me and said, 'How old are you?' I said I was 14 and he said, 'You can't go back there.'

"I went outside and then I went back into the store. And again he asked, 'How old are you?' This time I told him I was 18.

" 'Well then,' he said. 'I will show you how to shoot pool.' "

Clair says he later got a job as a cement finisher with a man name Vincent La Combe and helped to build a concrete building behind Louie's. It could be reached from a laneway than ran back from King beside the shop and lunch bar.

Walter Pieper ran Curley's Autobody (later Curley's Towing) in part of that building for a time. He often visited Louie's.

"It was a great place. He (Louie) was a great talker."

Pieper, who now lives in Hanover, Ont., believes the car in the photo is a 1932 Plymouth.

Louis and Alice Kenyon \emdash he was born in Waterloo County, but she was from Minnesota and they were married in 1914 in California \emdash had seven children.

One of them, Walter Andrew Kenyon, obtained a PhD in archeology from the University of Toronto and became a prominent curator (specializing in Ontario archeology) at the Royal Ontario Museum. Before his death in 1986, he wrote numerous books and appeared on an early CBC Television show called Who Knows? in which panellists tried to identify artifacts from area museums.

David Moore says he remembers seeing Walter Kenyon on this TV program as a boy.

"He sounded just like Louie," Moore says.

In the early 1950s Louis and Alice Kenyon sold their business to Keith Lovett, who continued to run a tobacco shop there and began selling guns, a business that grew into Lovett's Rod & Gun Centre. Lovett's moved in the early 1980s, shortly before many buildings in the block were demolished.

In an email, Robert Kenyon of Eugene, Ore., another son of the Kenyons, said his parents moved to Wasaga Beach, Ont., after selling the Kitchener store. When Louis died in 1967, Alice moved back to Kitchener, where she died two years later.

Mrs. Aaron Wilhelm

Mrs. Aaron Wilhelm of Shakespeare, died on Wednesday of last week at the Stratford General Hospital, at the age of 78.

Born in Kitchener, Aug. 30, 1891, she lived in Hespeler most of her life and was a member of the Hespeler Baptist Church. She moved to Shakespeare 15 years ago.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Albert Einwechter, in 1952.

Surviving besides her second husband are three sons, Charles Einwechter of Haysville, Gardiner Einwechter and Cameron Einwechter, both of Hespeler; six step-sons, Ivan, Eldon and Russell Wilhelm all of Kitchener, Lester and Robert Wilhelm of Shakespeare and Gordon Wilhelm in Alaska; three daughters, Mrs. Harvey (Hazel) Sauder of Hespeler, Mrs. Fred (Myrtle) Angus, RR 6, Galt and Mrs. Kenneth (Audrey) Davis of Hespeler; four stepdaughters, Mrs. Milton (Lillian) Haufschild of Kitchener, Mrs. Allan (Hazel) Blain of Lucan Ont., Mrs. Carl (Ruby) Brickman of Shakespeare and Mrs. Ray (Verna) Rorth of Shakespeare.
