    How They Farmed Sixty Years Ago

    …I can well remember when Noah Bechtel, uncle of John B. Bricker our genial corn borer inspector for Waterloo county, shot a large black grizzly bear in October, 1863. They had seen the bear eight miles north where there was a large bush and swamp, called Queen's Bush, where the farmers had their pigs to get acorns and beechnuts, which were plentiful. Mr. Bear came out sometimes to help them to butcher. We had no selects, a pig was a pig. One day a squad went after him but did not get him. Later in October he came trotting along through Wilmot township. Moses Bechtel and Christian Hallman were ploughing beside Noah Bechtel's cedar swamp when he came walking right up to them. They went in and Bechtel brought his rifle with him. They followed the bear's tracks for a mile from the swamp, through John Forler's swamp, then across the road into another 400 acre bush. John Forler hitched his carriage team into the democrat, drove to Petersburg, and brought a man up with a hound, and John Ernst Jr. came along with his bulldog. Wm. Miller put his hound on the trail and in a short time found Mr. Bruin sound asleep. Miller fired a shot and the bear came trotting through the swamp with the dogs after him. When he saw that he was surrounded it did not take him long to climb a tree. Noah Bechtel, with a well aimed shot, brought the bear down. …

    Notes:

    Mrs. Martha Pfanner, 85, died today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hammer, 90 Stirling Ave. Born April 1, 1860, in Wilmot Township she was a daughter of Jacob Forler and Marie Derbecker. The late Mrs. Pfanner was a regular attendant of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies Aid Society. Her husband Moses Pfanner, predeceased her 50 years ago. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clara Doering of Philipsburg and Mrs. John Hammer of Kitchener. Five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive. One son Edward died five years ago and a daughter, Mrs. Theo. Schmidt predeceased her ten years. Remains are resting at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until Monday morning when the removal will be made to the residence of her daughter, 90 Stirling Ave., where a private funeral service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. John Schmieder will officiate. Sympathy of friends will be accepted without flowers.

    Death of Mr. Jacob Forler

    Mr. Jacob Forler passed away shortly after 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, at his home on Queen Street, after an illness of almost three months, at the age of 37 years. The exact nature of the disease is hard to define, as it had baffled several doctors. There seemed to be a gradual wasting away, towards the end the arms becoming perfectly helpless. He suffered great pain, and during all the long days of sickness, he was unable to lie down, having to be propped up in bed. He bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and the end was peaceful. He leaves a mourning widow, having married Sophia Reichert, who is a sister of Mrs. Peter Hymmen, about 16 years ago. There are no children. The deceased was a tailor and had been employed as head coatmaker by Mr. Geo. Bergman ever since he started in business. Prior to that time he was with the Boehmer Co. and was known as a thorough and obliging workman. He was insured for $1000 in the London & Lancashire Co. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon from the residence to the German Baptist Church, of which he was a member, and thence to Mount Hope Cemetery.

The deceased had been in poor health for several years. She is survived by her husband, two sons and five daughters, Louis and Clayton, Louise, Pauline and Emma at home, Hattie, Hamilton, and Anna McKersie, Kitchener, one brother, George C. Forler, Wilmot township, and sister, Margarita Pfanner, Kitchener. The funeral will take place on Saturday, June 16 that 1:30 o'clock from the residence John Street, to St. John's Lutheran Church, for service and from thence to Mount Hope Cemetery for interment.

    Mrs. Pauline Henrietta Forler, 109 John St. E., Waterloo, died at St. Mary's Hospital last night following a lengthy illness. Deceased was born at St. Agatha, July 19, 1903, the daughter of Andrew Kress and the late Mrs. Kress. She was married to Clarence Forler who predeceased her in 1936. She is survived by her father; one son, John, at home, and four daughters, Pearl, Myrtle, Inez and Irene, all at home. Two brothers, Louis Kress, Westminster, B.C., and Clayton Kress, London, Ont., and four sisters, Mrs. A. McKersie, Mrs. Adolph Berlet, city, Mrs. Hattie Bonaney, St. Catherines, and Mrs. Harry Knack, Preston, also survive. The funeral will be held from St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo, of which she was a member, at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Rev. C. S. Roberts will conduct the services.     Well-known Preston resident for the past 15 years, Emma Catherine Krez, wife of Henry Knack, died at her home, 433 Margaret street, yesterday afternoon, after an illness of two years. Deceased was in her 40 year. Born in Waterloo, the late Mrs. Knack lived in Kitchener, coming to Preston after her marriage, 15 years ago, and making her home since that time.     DOERING, Nelson William - Of 50 Queen St. E., Wellesley, died suddenly Friday evening, July 16, 1976, at his home.

    He was born in Wilmot Township 70 years ago, a son of the late David Doering and the late Clara Pfanner. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Philipsburg; he was also a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, Court Nith M277. He farmed near Philips burg, retiring five years ago.

    Beloved husband of Alma Hohl; dear father of David of Wellesley, James of Kitchener, Jane (Mrs. Orval Mohr) of Route 2, Baden, June (Mrs. Kenneth A. Schmidt) and Lila (Mrs. Robert Ramseyer), both of New Hamburg, Ruth (Mrs. Stewart Little) of Ingersoll, dear brother of Alma (Mrs. Theodore Forler) of Route 2, Baden. Also survived by 25 grandchildren.

    Friends may call at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, Wellesley, until noon Monday, July 19, when removal will be made to Zion Lutheran Church for the service at 2:30. Rev. Norman Keffer will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

    Forler, John Andrew

    Passed away peacefully, on Sunday, July 3, 2011 at the Grand River Hospital, at the age of 79 years. John is survived by his sister, Irene Forler of Waterloo and remembered by his nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters, Pearl Wagner (Arthur), Myrtle Pautler (Clifford) and Inez Forler. John worked for Lear for over 25 years and in his retirement was a familiar face at the Downtown Community Centre, where he will be missed by staff and friends. In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has taken place. Private interment will be held at Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Arrangements entrusted to the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home (519)745-9495.
