In the name of God Amen. I Michael Wilhelm of the Township of Wilmot in the County of Waterloo and Province of Ontario, Gentlemen, being in good bodily health and memory and being desirous of settling my worldly affairs, and directing how- my Estate shall be disposed of after my decease, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament, hereby, revoking and making null and void all other last will and testaments by me heretofore made.

As to my worldly estate and all, the property of which I shall (diesiezed) and possessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease. I devise bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following to Wit:

First: My will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be my Executors herein after named be paid out of my estate as soon after my decease as shall by them be found convenient.

Secondly: I give devise and bequeath to my beloved wife ann Margaretha Wilhelm all my household furniture and my horse my wagon my cow, and my money to have and to hold the same to her forward during her natural life. But in case she do not wish to keep the horse and wagon then she may sell the same and use the proceed thereof during her natural life.

Thirdly: I give devise and bequeath to my heirs at law the reversion or remainder of my property that may result there from and after the decease of my beloved wife Anna Margaretha Wilhelm to be equally divided to and among my said heirs and assigns from and after the decease of my said wife to their and their use and behoof forever.

LASTLY: I do nominate and appoint my son Valentine Wilhelm to be the executor of this my last Will and Testament.

In witness whereof I the said Michael Wilhelm have to my last Will and Testament--subscribed my name and affixed my seal this thirty first day of October in the year of our Son One thousand eight hundred and sixty-one.

MRS. OTTO KLOTZ

With deep feelings of regret we have this week the sad task of announcing the death of Elizabeth, relict of the late Otto Klotz, which occurred on Tuesday evening 2nd August, 1892 less than a month from the time in which her husband's spirit took its flight. Mrs. Klotz death is an inexpressibly sad one. Following so closely on that of her husband, the shock of whose demise the family had scarcely recovered from, it has completely prostrated them, As far as can be learned the cause of death was as follows:- -Mrs. Klotz and her daughters, Mrs. Mylius (with her children) and Miss Klotz, and Mrs. Stehle had been sitting in the garden chatting. Mrs. Mylius left about 8 o'clock for home. Shortly afterwards Mrs. Klotz complained that she felt chilly, and went to the house. Sy this time it was quite dark, and even darker in the house as the lamps were not yet lit. It is supposed Mrs. Klotz must have noticd the door was open leading to the hail, but going on, opened the cellar door in mistake, and fell head foremost down the stairs. Miss Klotz came immediately after her, and went to Mrs. Klotz's assistance at once and found her unconscious at the bottom of the stair. Help was at once summoned and medical men sent for, but despite all that could be done for her, the injured lady never regained consciousness, passing away about 11 o'clock. It is supposed that in falling the side of her head struck the steps, from there she alighted on her head on the cellar floor, death beeing attributed to concussion of the brain. For some years past Mrs. Klotz has not enjoyed good health, but during the last few months she has been much better, and even during her husband's illness, she bore up bravely. The deceased lady was universally esteemed by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. An earnest and loving helpmate to her husband during their fifty years of married life; a fond mother, and an earnest Christian gentle woman, we can safely say that all within sound of the doleful chiming of the church bell, felt as if they had lost a personal friend when they realized that Mrs. Klotz was no more. The funeral took place on Friday Afternoon.

Mr. Valentine Wilhelm, a pionecr of Wilmot Township, passed away very suddenly on Wednesday morning at the residence of his son-in- law. Mr. Peter Wolf, Snider's road, at the age of 80 years. He retired the previous evening in his usual good health and after midnight he took suddenly ill and within a few bours he had breathed his last. Deceased was born in Hessia, Germany, and came to Canada with his parents in the year 1837, who at that time settled on a homéstead north of Philipsburg, where he resided until two years ago, when he came to live with his son-in-law on Snider's road. He was of an industrious disposition and during his life accumulated considerable wealth. He leaves to mourn his loss two sons and four daughter:- John and Christian, and Mrs. P. Wolf, Mrs. D. Lucard, Mrs. Hy. G. Koch and Mrs. Lorenz Schmidt, all of Wilmot.

New Hamburg. Oct. 6. - One Waterloo county's oldest citizens, Mr. Jacob Wilhelm, died at Shakespeare, Ont., Saturday, aged 87 years. He came to this country at the age ten years. In politics he was a Reformer, in religion an Evangelical Methodist. He was a successful farmer. He leaves seven children: George, retired farmer at Milverton; Michael, retired carriage builder, Wellesley; Daniel and Herman, comercial travellers, New Hamburg; Jacob with the T. Eaton Co., Toronto, Mrs Henry Schmidt, retired, Shakespeare Mrs. Carrie Zinn, New Hamburg..

JACOB E. KLOTZ DIES SUDDENLY

Well Known Resident Succumbs To Heart Attack While Waiting In Doctor's Oftice; Brother Of Noted Scientist

While waiting in the sitting room of Dr. E. Heist's office on Satutday afternoon at about 4.30 o'clock, Jacob E. Klotz, a well known resident of this city, dropped dead, He was found dead in his chair when the doctor came from the examining room where he was advising another patient. Mr. Klotz had been in excellent health until Saturday afternoon when he complained of not feIling very well. He decided to go to Dr. Heist for treatment and it was while awaiting his appointment with the doctor that he was seized with a fatal heart attack. Jacob E. Klotz had been a well known resident of this city for the last 11, years. He was identified as a shareholder in a number of local industries but was not actively engaged in business. He was a member of the Lancaster Club and was popular with the membership as well as with a wide circle of friends. Deceased was a brother of Dr. Otto Klotz noted scientist who died in Ottawa on December 31. He was born in Preston 83 years ago the son, of Otto Klotz. Deceased celebrated his 83rd birthday on December 21. Mr. Klotz is survived by two sisters, Miss Augusta Klotz (with whom he lived) 38 Ahrens street west and Mrs. Mylius of this city and two brothers, Dr. Carl Klotz of St. Catharines and E. W. Klotz of Toronto. The funeral will be held from his late residence on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock followed by Interment at Preston.

Jacob Emil Klotz was born in Preston on December 31, 1840, a son of Otto Klotz and Eliza Wilhelm. He was the Canadian Commissioner of Immigration from 1872 to 1880. In 1885 he became a partner with William Stahlschmidt in William Stahlschmidt and Co., later the Canadian Office and School Furniture Co., in the manufacture of a variety of school desks and office furniture. Mr. Klotz acted as president of the company and is credited with the early success of the company which later grew into one of the prominent furniture manufacturers in the country. Mr. Klotz also served as the vice president of the Galt and Preston Street Railway Co. when it was organized on November 12, 1890 and was one of the founding members of the Waterloo Historical Society when it was formed on November 13, 1912. Mr. Klotz served as mayor of Preston from 1901 to 1903 and died in Kitchener on January 5. 1924. He is buried in Preston Cemetery.

In Memoriam

Catherine Lamb, only daughter of John was born in Preston, May 4th, 1848. She was a robust child, and enjoyed good health until attacked by the disease, which resulted in her death. She early exhibited those traits of character which endear the child, and whose regular development adorn the woman. She was tidy, cheerful, obedient and apt to learn. She loved her teacher and school mates, and was loved by them with a heartiness, that made the schoolroom and its play ground the dearest spot in the village to her. She made rapid talent for vocal and instrumental music. She was passionately fond of music, and with an industry rarely found among young persons, she copied with the most scrupulous neatness many hundred pieces of music and gems of song. She was equally expert in the German and English languages, and the rich treasures of son which this opened to her were diligently employed. One favorite German song was "Die deutsche Mutter," (the German Mother,) a ditty full of patriotism and pathos. "Die Kraft des Gebetes" (the power of prayer) was one she delighted to play and sing, and her last act of public devotion was to hym this stirring melody on the organ of the Lutheran Church in Preston.

As she grew up to her social qualities endeared her to every one with whom she came in contact. She was modest without bashfulness, talented without ostentation and amiable without affection. Her gifts, humour and cheerfulness were her free unconscious and natural contribution to every social gathering in which she was present. Katy, as she was always called, was a favorite everywhere, her genial smile and liberal hand winning the respect of the old and the affection of the young.

The girl was budding into a woman, and that life of woman's life, love had been awakened in her heart. She was betrothed to Mr. Jacob E. Kloz of Preston, on the 18th of June, 1865. A group of friends celebrated the event at the residence of the latter's father. In a year more the betrothed were to go to the altar. The betrothal is both a fruition and an anticipation. In preparations solemn and merry, cheerful and grave, she set about filling up the interval. In September, Consumption, death's most insidious and relentless agent, laid his hands upon her. It was unheeded. Slowly and mercilessly his grasp tightened. It became serious. All that the most devoted loved could do was done. Death was inevitable. She bore up with patience and vigor. She sought to comfort and consoled those who waited so tenderly on her. She was thankful and resigned - she never murmured. But nothing could help her. She maintained her consciousness and reason to the last, and on the 12th of June, 1866, with her hand clasped in that of her beloved Jacob, the world with all its joys and sorrows, for her faded away forever. Instead of being led to the altar she has been carried to the tomb - her bridal robes have become a winding sheet and the blooming bride is now a foetid corpse.

Farewell Katy, farewell. Sweet memories cling around thy name. Thou didst thy duty lovingly and well. Thy pure spirit could no longer break bonds of clay and hath ascended to it place. Peace to thy ashes - Com.

MISS AUGUSTA W. KLOTZ

The funeral of Miss Augusta W. Klotz, daughter of the late Otto Klotz, one of the pioneers of Preston, was held this morning from St. Peter's church at 10.45 o'clock. Rev. W. H. Knauff, pastor, officiated. Interment was made in Preston cemetery. During his sermon Rev. Mr. Knauff referred to the fact that Miss Klotz was the second last of the original Klotz family. There remains only her brother, Mr. Emil Klotz of Toronto. The family were pioneers in St. Peter's congregation here. Pallbearers were Messrs., Henry Schulz and Cyrus Dolph of Preston, P. V. Wilson, Waterloo, B. A. Tate, Kitchener, Dr. Oscar Klotz, Toronto and W. M. O. Langdon, Timmins. The late Miss Klotz died at Timmins early yesterday morning.

Otto Julius Klotz OLS, DLS, DTS

(March 31, 1852 - December 28, 1923) was a Canadian astronomer and Dominion Surveyor. Born in Preston (Cambridge), Upper Canada, the son of Otto Klotz and Elise (Elizabeth) Wilhelm, Klotz was educated at Galt Grammar School, later heading to University of Toronto and finished his degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

At 14 years old Klotz received a foolscap diary, in which he recorded every day of life except for 2 days when he crossed the date line. The personal and professional records are entered into the National Archives of Canada . In 1885, Klotz was the first person to be officially designated as astronomer in the Dominion of Canada. He had been assiged chief of astronomical observations to be conducted in British Columbia and the North West. He worked on the British Columbia Railway Belt Survey from 1885 to 1890, and was assigned the task to resolve the United States and Canada boundary dispute during the 1890s. Klotz also worked on the Alaska boundary survey in 1893-1894. While in London, England, in 1898 he discovered an important cache of Foreign Office correspondence, much of which pertained to the North American Boundary Commission, some of whose Royal Engineer members were photographers.Klotz was appointed one (1908 as Assistant Chief Astronomer) of two employees of the Dominion Observatory , the nations first astronomical observatory. In 1916 he was appointed Dominion Astronomer.His other claims to fame include the oversight of the All Red Cable Route connecting Australia and Canada in 1902, he has been called the father of the Public Library in Ottawa University Club. He was also a member of the Astronomical Association of Mexico, and of New Zealand Institute. During his work in British Columbia he was the first to determine the heights of principal mountain peaks along the railway and named many of them.

Born at Preston, Upper Canada, and educated at Toronto and Michigan Universities, Klotz joined the public service in 1879. For thirty years he was engaged in topgraphical surveys in British Columbia, the Canadian Northwest, and Alaska. Appointed Assistant Chief AStronomer in 1908, he became director of the Dominion Observator in 1917. The author of many papers on astronomy and geography, he was elected to fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada in 1910. He died in Ottawa.

THE death of Dr. Klotz on December 28, 1923, was a great loss to Canadian science, to the Government service, and especi-ally to the Dominion Observatory, with which he had been associ-ated since its inception, and of which he was Director for the last six years. With him passes away the last of the earlier generation of Canadian astronomical workers, whose work, beginning in the eighties, was gradually developed and finally came to fruition in the founding of the Dominion Observatory.

Dr. Klotz had been in failing health for some time. For many years he had been troubled with a slight affection of the heart, which impaired his physical activities, though not his mental vigour and alertness. This was probably more or less aggravated by the somewhat strenuous experiences (for a man of his years) of his trip to Europe in the spring of 1922 as Canadian delegate to the Rome meeting of the International Astronomical Union. In September, a few months after his return, the onset of further complications necessitated the giving up of his hitherto regular attendance at the office, though he still followed carefully and took the keenest interest in all developments of the work of the Observatory. There followed a long hard winter, which only his grim determination and buoyant hopefulness carried him through. With the advent of spring his health improved somewhat, and the earliest possible moment found him again at his desk for several hours each day. Failing strength, however, would not be denied, and in October he was again confined to the house, on this occasion for the last time. His attitude in these last months was an interesting study of indomitable purpose: day by day, to within a few weeks of the end, he looked forward to a speedy return to his duties---" to-morrow or next day "-a to-morrow which was never to come.

Born in the village of Preston, Ontario (at that time Upper Canada), on March 31, 1852, Otto Klotz received his early education in the public school of the village. His father was Otto Klotz, notary public and the author of a German grammar for use in public schools; there was no one a more ardent advocate for the introduction of free public schools in Canada than he, as shown by correspondence on the subject between him and Ryerson. As was more common in that day than this, the teacher, James Buchanan, himself a man of considerable educational attainments, was able and enthusiastic enough to organize a class of about a dozen boys and girls and put them through a fairly thorough course in Euclid and Natural Philosophy.

In 1865 the thirteen year old lad won a scholarship entitling him to free tuition in the Berlin High School, and the following year a similar scholarship for the Galt Grammar School; the latter he accepted, and on April 16, 1866, entered the then famous school of Dr. Tassie, well known throughout the Canadas as an educator and disciplinarian.

His methodical habit of mind early manifested itself by the beginning on August 16, 1866, of a diary in foolscap form in which he entered his daily doings. This diary was continued in its original form for over fifty-seven years, up to within a few days of his death. Entries were religiously made every day during all that period, and during his later years he took a pride in telling that the only day missing was May 20, 1903 lost in going around the world. It was his habit from time to time to enter short essays on the events of the day and questions of public interest, including such incidents as visits to foreign observatories and other institutions, or meetings with distinguished men.

After remaining for three years in the Galt Grammar School he matriculated to the University of Toronto in both arts and medicine, winning a scholarship in the latter course. As it was impossible to carry on two courses he finally selected the arts course including mathematics, astronomy and science. In those days the teaching in the two latter subjects was sadly deficient in Toronto, and the youthful student was forced to turn his face to the United States, finally selecting the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, which he entered as a sophomore in 1870, graduating with the class of 1872. Among his classmates possibly the most distinguished was R. S. Woodward, the well-known scientist, who completed his career by being the first President of the Carnegie Institution at Washington, an office which he held up to his retire-ment within the last few years. These years too were marked by the formation of an acquaintance with Marie Widenmann, daughter of the German Consul at Ann Arbor, an acquaintance which culminated in their marriage on December 4, 1873. Their golden wedding was celebrated quietly some three weeks before his death.

Shortly after graduation he was offered posts in the United States both with the Lake Survey and the Coast and Geodetic Survey, but preferred to return to his native land and take up work as a surveyor and engineer. For several years he followed the private practice of his profession, and in November, 1877, successfully tried the examination for D.T.S. (Dominion Topographical Surveyor), the highest surveying degree in Canada. Two years later he received an appointment as contract surveyor for the Canadian Government, and was shortly after advanced to base line work, the highest class of surveys in the Northwest. It may be remarked that he was the first one (in 1881) to make a return of the nature of the soil removed from the pits dug to designate township or section corners, a practice which was subsequently generally introduced and adopted by the Department. In 1885, when a local board of D.L.S. examiners for British Columbia was formed, he was one of the appointees, the other members being E. Deville, Wm. Ogilvie and Thos. Drummond. Two years later, in June, 1887, on the resignation of Lindsay Russell, he was appointed by order-in-council to the regular board of examiners, a position which he occupied till his death.

As early as 1884 the question of the feasibility of the Hudson bay route to Europe had come up. In that year an expedition was fitted out on the steamer "Neptune", which deposited ob-servers at various points along Hudson strait and in the bay to report on ice and weather conditions. At the same time Mr. Klotz was entrusted with an overland exploration survey, following the South Saskatchewan to its junction with the North Branch, thence to Cumberland House and through Cedar lake to lake Winnipeg, continuing down the Nelson to Hudson bay and York Factory; the return trip was by the canoe route of the Hudson's Bay Com-pany up the Hayes river and through Oxford lake. The expedition comprised two Peterborough canoes and four men; it covered two thousand miles, involving eighty-seven portages. On account of the shallowness of the water about York Factory and Nelson he reported adversely to making either the terminus of any contemplated railway to Hudson Bay; the commercial value of such a railway he also questioned in any event.

The entrance of British Columbia into Confederation introduced a new phase into the survey work of the Department of the Interior. It will be remembered that one of the conditions of Confederation was the granting by British Columbia to the Dominion of a strip of land twenty miles wide on each side of the Canadian Pacific railway and parallel thereto. It was manifestly impossible, on account of physical difficulties, to extend the existing system of surveys to and through the mountainous regions of British Columbia; the only alternative was a detailed azimuth survey tied in here and there to points whose latitude and longitude had been determined with precision by astronomical methods. This entailed astronomical observations, which were put under the charge of Mr. Klotz, and he was the first one to whom the title of Astronomer was officially given by the Department. Several stations were established in 1885, using Seattle as a preliminary basepoint for the longitudes, as being the nearest station of which the longitude was even approximately known. Within the next two years the chain of stations was extended eastward to Port Arthur, and later to eastern Canada. To cope with the ever increasing demand for astronomical positions, arising from the necessities of Dominion Lands surveys, the coordinating of these and other surveys for mapping purposes, and the delimitation of the international boundaries, the Astronomical Branch of the Department of the Interior was established, to develop later, in the course of events, into the Dominion Observatory.

In connection with the survey of the Railway Belt, Mr. Klotz was the first to determine accurately the heights of the mountains in the Rockies and Selkirks and the Gold Range, and he named a number of well-known peaks, such as Mounts Macdonald, Tupper, Mackenzie, Tilley, Begbie, Burgess, Dennis, Hector and others.

Later he spent some considerable time in Alaska in connection with preliminary reports on the afterwards famous boundary question. His report was in several respects unfavorable to the Canadian contention, foreshadowing with remarkable foresight some of the points in the actual award of 1903. Other counsels however prevailed, and his connection with the question terminated.

His first trip to Europe was in 1898, when he was sent by the Government on a confidential mission to London, Paris and St. Petersburg. The opportunity was embraced of visiting a number of observatories, for, though we had as yet no Canadian observatory, the vision had been formed and events were slowly shaping themselves in that direction. The connections then formed were kept up ever after, to the mutual benefit of himself and Canadian astronomical science.

In 1902, on the completion of the All Red Cable route by the filling in of the last link between Canada and Australia, he was en-trusted with the oversight of a longitude campaign to connect these two countries and to thus complete the first longitude girdle of the earth. With him in this work was associated Mr. F. W. O. Werry, and the undertaking was carried to a successful conclusion by a campaign extending over parts of 1903 and 1904. When the resulting longitudes of points in Australia were compared with those deduced from preceding determinations of longitude arcs from Greenwich, proceeding towards the east, they were found to agree within a fifteenth of a second of time or one second of arc.

On his return from Australia in 1904 by way of Europe he was granted by the University of Toronto the honorary degree of LL.D. Later this was to be supplemented by the degree of D. SC. from his alma mater, the University of Michigan, and by the further degree of LL.D. from the University of Pittsburg.

Meanwhile, largely through the efforts of Dr. King, the Chief Astronomer of the Department, and himself, both of whom had persistently advocated it for many years, the project of a fixed Canadian observatory was gradually taking shape. At the outset their ideas were very modest-too modest perhaps; they dared not hope for the possibility of anything beyond a small observatory and office building, to house a fixed transit instrument and the necessary small longitude staff, with perhaps a toy equatorial for exhibition purposes. As time passed, however, their thoughts and hopes grew bolder, until finally the man. of the hour appeared in the person of the Honourable Clifford Sifton, who, as Minister of the Interior, granted them all, and more than all, that they asked, and the Dominion Observatory became an assured fact. The new building was completed and occupied in the spring of 1905, with Dr. King as Chief Astronomer and Director, and a short time later Dr. Klotz was given the title of Assistant Chief Astronomer.

From the outset he had charge of the division of geophysics, including seismology, terrestrial magnetism and gravity. The latter he had already been engaged in to some extent, having carried with him on his Australian longitude campaign a set of invariable half-seconds pendulums of the Mendenhall type, with which relative determinations of gravity were made at all the stations occupied. The infant science of seismology he took up with his accustomed vigor and gave it his undivided personal attention for the next twelve years. During that period he built up a seismological station of the first rank, with a reputation sur-passed by few if any in the world, which remains one of the en-during monuments to his memory. He is perhaps most widely known by the Seismological Tables issued by him in 1916. His place among the seismologists of the world was recognized by the Government in sending him as delegate to the international seis-mological meeting at the Hague in 1907, to Zermatt in 1909, to Manchester in 1911 and to St. Petersburg in 1914 the last visit being interrupted en route by the war.

A systematic magnetic survey of Canada-one of the most extensive ever carried on in any part of the world-was inaugurated under his direction in 1907; this has been systematically carried on and extended to the present day, the field of operations having been carried to the Arctic circle and beyond during the summer of 1923. In the actual field observations, however, he took no personal part.

The field of gravity was less systematically pursued owing to the lack of observers to whom to entrust the field observations. Some fifty stations, however, were occupied in various parts of Canada up to the time of his death.

With the death of Dr. King, early in 1916, the natural sequence would have been the appointment of Dr. Klotz to the vacant Directorship. Coming as it did, however, in the midst of the world war, with national prejudices and hatred of all things German at fever heat, his German name told heavily against him. This fact, aggravated, as appeared later, by malicious rumors actively spread by a few former friends, created a storm of popular pre-judice to which the Government thought it better in those strenuous days for the time being to bow; when, in the autumn of 1917, the appointment was finally made, there was heartfelt rejoicing among the staff, who had been for eighteen months without a head, and with whom Dr. Klotz was deservedly popular. It is hard to realize what must have been his feelings during those long months of unjust suspicion and isolation; as a matter of fact no sturdier Canadian existed anywhere, as evidenced by his whole life history exemplified by the fact that the only one of the family of military age (a nephew) was killed in action at the front.

On his appointment as Director he gave up in large measure his personal work in seismology and devoted himself to the over-sight of the wider problems of observatory work as a whole. When in 1920 Canada gave her adherence to the International Astronomical Union organized at Brussels the previous year, he was elected Chairman of the National Committee of Canada; he was also a member of three of the international committees of the Union, as well as of the Canadian National Committee for the International Geodetic and Geophysical Union. In 1922 he was appointed Canadian delegate to the Rome meeting of the Inter-national Astronomical Union in May of that year, and also repre-sented Canada at the seven hundredth anniversary of the founding of the University of Padua in the same month.

He was a member of many learned societies, among which may be mentioned the Royal Astronomical Society of England; the Royal Society of Canada, being president of Section III in 1922; the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, of which he was for some years honorary president; the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the New Zealand Institute, of which he was the only member in Canada; overseas member of the Norman Lockyer Observatory Corporation; ex-president of the Seismological Society of America; vice-president for three years of the American Astronomical Society; honorary president of the Dominion Land Surveyors' Association; and many others.

Between 1882 and 1922 he published ninety-nine papers besides his many official reports. His writings cover astronomy, seis-mology, terrestrial magnetism, gravity and the wider fields of general geophysics. He had a gift of popular exposition all too rarely found in the scientist, and his public lectures had a breezi-ness and charm that put him in instant touch with his audience. He filled a worthy place in the early development of astronomical science in Canada, and his loss will be felt keenly by his fellow-scientists in many varied lines of work in this and other countries, as well as by a host of warm personal friends and admirers.

Dr. Otto Julius Klotz was born in Preston on March 31, 1852 a son of Otto Klotz, himself described as "Waterloo County's most public spirited citizen of the 19th century". Otto Julius Klotz proved himself an able student and in April 1866 began studies at the Tassie School in Galt. Three years later he entered the University of Toronto where he studied mathematics, astronomy and general science. Upon graduating he enrolled at the University of Michigan whence he graduated in 1872 with a degree in civil engineering. He returned immediately to Canada and established a private practice as a surveyor and engineer. In 1877 he passed the examinations of the Dominion Topographic Survey and two years later was appointed as a contract surveyor for the federal government. In the early 1880's the feasibility of a Hudson Bay route from western Canada to Europe had come up and the government decided to undertake an extensive investigation of ice and weather conditions along Hudson Strait and in the Bay. Mr. Klotz was placed at the head of the expedition that performed a survey of a 2,000 mile section from the South Saskatchewan River 'to York Factory on the Bay. Following this task he performed surveys connected with the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and with the determination of the boundary between Alaska and British Columbia. This latter survey involved extensive astronomical observations and he was the first man whom the Department of the Interior designated as Astronomer. In 1902 with the completion of the All Red Cable Route connecting Canada and Australia, Mr. Klotz was entrusted with the oversight of a longitude campaign connecting the two countries. This task occupied him for two years and was completed with an accuracy that was widely noted and praised. He is credited with the accurate measurements of the heights of notable peaks in the Rockies and with the first astronomical girdle of the world on the completion of the all-red cable. In 1905 with the completion of the new Dominion Observatory in Ottawa, Mr. Klotz was named the Assistant Dominion Astronomer. He was a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of England, President and Fellow of the Astronomical Society of Canada, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Honourary President of the Dominion Land Surveyors and President of the Ontario Surveyors' Association. He has been called the father of the Public Library in Ottawa and was the founder of the Ottawa University Club. He was also an honourary member of the Astronomical Association of Mexico and of the New Zealand Institute. In 1917 Mr. Klotz became the Dominion Astronomer, a position he held until his death, in Ottawa, on December 28, 1923.

OTTO JULIUS KLOTZ was born at Preston, Waterloo County, Ont., March 31^st 1852, his parents being Otto Klotz, a native of Kiel, Holstein, and his wife Elsie, n Wilhelm, of Breitenbach, Hesse Cassel, Germany. His father was born November 25^th 1817, came to America in 1837, shortly after which he settled in Preston, where he has resided ever since. The subject of our sketch, who is the second youngest of a family of six children, received his primary education at the public school in his native village, distinguishing himself in 1865 by carrying off both of the county scholarships; subsequently he attended the Galt grammar school (now Collegiate Institute), then conducted by the late Dr. Tassie, and in 1869 he matriculated in Medicine and Engineering at the University of Toronto, obtaining the medical scholarship of $120. For a time he was undecided as to which of the two courses he would pursue, being fond of each, but ultimately his fondness for mathematics prevailed and he chose the latter. Finding, however, that the engineering course in the university at that time was very limited, he left and completed his studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where, in 1872, he obtained the degree of C.E., being the youngest graduate in his class. The subject of his graduation thesis was "The Crystallization of Iron." The remainder of that year he spent among the iron mines of Northern Michigan, and the following year he was occupied in exploring the north shore of Lake Superior. For some time afterwards he confined himself to private practice at Guelph and Preston until he entered the service of the Department of the Interior (Topographical Surveys Branch), in which he has been engaged ever since. In 1887 he received the appointment as one of the examiners for Dominion Land Surveyors, in which capacity he still acts. After his survey in 1882, he visited Montana, Idaho, Utah, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas, for the purpose of comparing the Public Lands of the United States with those of the Dominion. Besides his extended surveys over the vast prairies of the North-West he made an exploration in 1884 along the Saskatchewan and Nelson rivers to Hudson's Bay, making a canoe trip of about 2,000 miles, and was the first man (white or Indian) to descend the whole length of the Nelson during the present century. On this journey he came across various relics of Sir John Franklin, of Arctic fame, and made magnetic observations at points which had been occupied by that ill-fated explorer. In the following winter Mr. Klotz published a magnetic chart in connection with a discussion of the position of the magnetic pole. In 1885 he began the transcontinental longitude determinations, observing first at the base station at Seattle, Washington. Geographic points of reference have now been established in British Columbia, the North-West and Manitoba, and the work has been carried eastward as far as Port Arthur. In 1886, besides his astronomic work in British Columbia, he made an accurate survey of the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Rocky Mountains and the Selkirks, as a basis for the delimitation of the forty-mile railway belt granted b British Columbia to the Dominion of Canada. The first determination of the heights of the principal mountain peaks along the railway was also made by Mr. Klotz. The following year, before going to the field, he made a tour among the chief observatories in the United States, gathering practical information, and two years later we find him in Alaska on an important government mission. On his return from that expedition he visited the Great Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton, California. Last year (1891), he was sent to the North-West to survey and report on an amber deposit, being the first large deposit found in Canada or the United States. During the present year he was appointed by the Department of the Interior as one of the astronomers for the trans-Atlantic longitude determination between Greenwich and Montreal, a work of the greatest scientific as well as practical value. During the winter, Mr. Klotz is busy at computations, one of the longest and most intricate being that now approaching completion - the computation of the limit of the above-cited forty-mile railway belt in British Columbia - in which calculation there are nearly one million tabulated figures. From the foregoing it will readily be understood that Mr. Klotz takes a keen interest in all matters pertaining to his profession, and it is a strong evidence of his high standing that on the formation of the Association of Dominion Land Surveyors he was chosen its first president, a position which he held for four consecutive years. The annual proceedings of the association invariably contain a professional paper by him. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is a member of various other scientific organizations. Though taking but little part in public affairs outside his profession, Mr. Klotz has always manifested a deep interest in educational matters, especially the public schools and Mechanics' Institutes. For a number of years he has been one of the directors of the Preston Mechanics' Institute, the library of which is one of the best selected in the Province of Ontario. In 1873, December 4^th, Mr. Klotz married Marie Widenmann, daughter of the late German Consul for Michigan, and their children are Max, Julius, Oskar and Irma, the eldest being now a medical student at the University of Toronto.

Impressive Tribute Paid to Late Doctor Klotz.

The eminent place which the late Dr. Otto Klotz occupied in the community and the high regard with which he was held by scientists and public-spirited citizens was fittingly demonstrated at his funeral, which took place on December 31. In the long cortege were seen personal representatives of several great universities, as well as prominent local scientists and many members of the staffs of Government and civil organizations.

Much sympathy is being extended to Mr. Jac. E. Klotz and his sisters, Miss Klotz and Mrs. Mylius, on the loss of their distinguished brother.

North Easthope Man Fatally Injured In Car Accident

Joseph Wilhem Almost Instantly Killed When Car Overturns

A fatal automobile accident occurred in North Easthope near Ratzburg on Sunday afternoon in which Mr. Joseph Wilhem, an esteemed pioneer resident of the Township, lost his life. The car in which he was a passenger skidded in loose gravel and turned over. Others in the car were his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Moses Rupp and Miss Gladys Fink, all of Kitchener. They escaped with minor injuries. Mr. Wilhelm suffered a fractured spine and died almost immediately from shock. The car is said to have been driven by Mr. Rupp.

The aged man, who was in his 89^th year, had spent the winter with his daughter in Kitchener and they were on their way to his own home in North Easthope when the accident occurred.

The late Mr. Wilhelm was born in Wilmot Township on May 30, 1852, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wilhelm. Following his marriage in 1875, to Mattie Roth of North Easthope, he settled in that township, purchasing the farm now occupied by his son, Hardie near Amulree.

The deceased was well known and highly esteemed in the district. He farmed for many years and was also a minister of the Reformed Mennonite church, having served the congregation at Amulree, Kingwood and Hostetler's, near New Hamburg. He had lived retired for some years owing to failing health.

His wife predeceased him in 1928. Surviving are three sons, Joseph of South Easthope, Abraham and Hardy of North Easthope, five daughters, Mrs. Moses Rupp, Mrs. Reuben Baker and Mrs. Harry Cook, all of Kitchener, Mrs. Charles Fink of North Easthope and Mrs. Gordon Steiner of Mount Cory, Ohio, two sisters, Mrs. John Dahmer of New Hamburg and Mrs. John D. Schmidt of Tavistock and two brothers, David of Hampstead and Moses of North Easthope.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon. A private service was held at his late home, North Easthope, at 1: 30, followed by public service at the Reformed Mennonite Church, North Easthope. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

WELLESLEY, March 26- David Wilhelm, 90, retired farmer, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Beaver, R.R. 1, Gadshill..

He had been in failing health for several months.

Born in Wilmot Township, Oct. 14, 1860, he was the son of the late Peter Wilhelm and his wife, the former Barbara Wittig.

Mr. Wilhelm was an adherent of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Lisbon.

His wife, the former Catherine Warning, predeceased him in 1938.

He is survived by two daughters (Leah), Mrs. Beaver; Mrs. Peter (Luella) Jacob of Brunner. One brother, Moses of North Easthope, and one sister, Mrs. John D. Schmidt of Tavistock, also survive him.

He also leaves 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great, great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be public Wednesday from the residence of his daughter at 2 p.m., followed by services at the Lisbon Evangelical United Brethren Church. Rev. Bruce Amy will conduct the services. Burial will take place at Lis- bon U.B. Cemetery.

Mrs. Barbara Schmidt, Tavistock's oldest resident, who marked her 94th birthday on March 30, died Friday afternoon at the Maples Rest Home, Tavistock. She had been in failing health for more than 11 months. The former Barbara Wilhelm, she was born in Wilmot Township on March 30, 1865, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wilhelm. The family moved to North Easthope when she was 10 years old. She was married to John D. Schmidt on March 14, 1893, after which the couple moved to a farm on the 12th line of East Zorra, a mile west of Tavistock. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt retired to Tavistock in 1921. Mr. Schmidt died in July, 1944. Mrs. Schmidt had been a member of Zion EUB church, Tavistock, since 1909, and was active in the Ladies' Aid and Women's Society of World Service of that church. She was a former president of the joint organization, and later served as treasurer of the Aid of 20 years. Surviving are two sons, Edward, Tavistock, and Emerson, Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Miss Ella Schmidt, Tavistock; and a brother, Moses Wilhelm, North Easthope. There are seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
The funeral was held Monday after with service at Zion Evangelical Church, Tavistock, and burial in the church cemetery, Rev. George Sim officiating.

Mrs. Elizabeth Wolfe

Mrs. Elizabeth Wolfe, relict of the late Peter Wolfe, for many years a highly esteemed resident of New Hamburg, passed away last Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W/. H. Sitler, at Kitchener. She was in her 86th year and death was due to old age.

The late Mrs. Wolfe was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Wilhelm and was born in Wilmot Township near Wilby in 1845. On March 5th, 1867, she married Peter Wolfe. For many ears they resided on a farm in Wallace and then came to Wilmot, first to Wilby and then on to the farm now owned by their son Wesley, east of this town. About seventeen years ago they moved to town and lived retired. Mr. Wolfe died six years ago. Owing to feeble health Mrs. Wolfe spent the winter with her daughter in Kitchener.

There are left to mourn her three daughters and five sons, Mrs. nelson Schatz, Waterloo, Mrs. W. H. Sitler, Kitchener, Mrs. Geo Nelson, Palmerston, William and Wesley, of New Hamburg, John E., of Kitchener, Solomon of Preston, and Addison, of Hamilton. She also leaves twenty-nine grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock from Kitchener to the local Evangelical Church where the services was conducted by the Rev. A. Pletch. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance. Interment followed in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery.

John S. Wilhelm Passes in 91st Year.

A lifelong and wellknown resident of Wilmot Township in the person of John S. Wilhelm, passed away early last Friday, January 28th, lacking six days of reaching the age of 91 years. He was one of the County's oldest residents. His death occurred at his home near Baden, following a three weeks' illness.

The late John Sipel Wilhelm was born on February 3rd, 1847, on the Wilhelm farm at Wilby, a son of Valentine Wilhelm and his wife, Margaret Sipel. This farm now owned by Mr. Nelson Wilhelm, was settled on by the deceased's grandfather, the late Michael Wilhelm, who came from Germany 100 years ago, when his father the late Valentine Wilhelm, was 9 years of age.

Mr. Wilhelm was married to Louisa Grube, Tavistock, on Feb. 14th,187H, Rev. John Stumpf officiating. They began their married life below Petersburg where they lived for seven years, returning to the present homestead on Erb's road sixty years ago.

Mr. Wilhelm was a loyal member of the New Hamburg Baptist Church, having joined 73 years ago. For years he led the singing in the Phi'iipsbur? church and was deacon. He had many friends who gathered in Shantz Mennonite Church (Sunday afternoon to pay tr/oute to his sterling worth. The service was conducted by Rev. Earle Dale, his pastor, and the mixed quartette from the Baptist Church sang at the house and church. Burial was in the Wilhelm Cemetery on the farm where he lived so long. The bearers were nephews, namely, Messrs. Emerson Luckhardt, Daniel Wilhelm, Connad Bolander, (Milton Schmidt, Reuben Koch, Wesley Wolfe.

Besides the sorrowing widow there survive three sons, Valentine on the homestead, Edward V. of Snider's Road, John E. of Erb's Road, and four daughters, Mrs. Amanda Geiger, of Waterloo, Mrs. Veronica Diebel, Kitchener, Mrs. Clayton Smith, Zurich, Mrs. A. E. Ludwig, Kitchener. Two daughters, Mrs. iMarion Geiger and Mrs. Lydia Groff, predeceased him. There are thirty-four grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Luckhardt, Mrs. Henry G. Koch and Mrs. Veronica Schmidt, all of New Hamburg.

The death occurred on Monday, May 24th, of a well known and highly esteemed resident of Northern Wilmot in the person of Mr. Christian S. Wilhelm, at the age of 72 years and 11 months. The deceased suffered a paralytic stroke on the preceding Wednesday, which caused his demise. The late Mr. Wilhelm was a son of the late Valentine Wilhelm and was born on the homestead where he spent his whole life. He was mraried [sic] twice. His first wife, Mary Luckhart, died thirty years ago. He is survived by his second wife, nee Catharine Koch, and 14 children, seven of whom are from his first union. The children are Samuel of Hawkesdale, Alberta; Mrs. L. C. McDonald, Hamilton; Solomon, Sarah and Herman, Whitby: Mrs. H. Hingler, Mrs. Theo. Gruetzner, Hanover; Wellington, Nelson, Lily and Alice at home, and Edna of Lisbon. The funeral was held last Wednesday and was largely attended. Rev. M. S. Wilhelm

One of the largest and best equipped blacksmith shops and carriage and wagon manufactory in the county is owned and operated by this gentleman. Mr. Wilhelm was born in Wilmot township in 1858. He was raised on a firm, but has worked at the trade he now follows the greater part of his life. He commenced here in 1881. His establishment is a large one, being 60 x33 feet in dimensions and two stories high. The blacksmith shop is one of the best equipped in this section. Mr. Wilhelm has a reputation of doing first class work, both in wood work, ironing vehicles and horse shoeing. He manufactures wagons, buggies, carriages and cutters and does painting, trimming and repairing. For a number of years Mr. Wilhelm has been connected with the Wellesley Agricultural Association, having been for two years its Vice President and two years its President. He is also a director of the Association. He owns valuable real estate in the village and is one of its citizens who strives to keep business moving. He has a good patronage.

DR. MAX O. KLOTZ

In the death of Dr. Max O. Klotz, Ottawa loses a prominent surgeon and the Association one of its active members. Dr. Klotz was born in Preston, Ont. in 1874, a son of Otto J. Klotz, Director of the Dominion Observatory, and graduated at Toronto in 1895. He has practiced in Ottawa since that date where he acquired an extensive practice and attained many honorary offices in the gift of the profession. For several years he restricted his work to surgery. He was surgeon of the Protestant Hospital, and at the time of his death was President of the Ottawa Medico-Chirurgical Society. He represented his district in the Ontario Medical Council for several years, and was President of the Council in 1913. Dr. Oscar Klotz, formerly of McGill University, now of the Rockefeller Institute, is a brother.

Dr. Oscar (Oskar) Klotz was born in Preston in 1878 a son of Otto Julius Klotz. He received his elementary education in Preston and attended the Galt Collegiate Institute. He received his university and medical training at the University of Toronto, McGill University and at several German universities.He was a lecturer in pathology at McGill University and a professor of pathology at Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was a consultant in pathology for the government of the United States during World War I and between 1926 and 1928 was in West Africa as a member of the Yellow Fever Commission. Dr. Klotz was a professor of pathology at the University of Toronto when he died on November 3, 1936.

Death came very suddenly to Mrs, Samuel Luckhardt at her home on Jacob Street on Wednesday. She was strickened with apoplexy about four o'clock in the afternoon and passed away at seven o'clock without regaining consciousness. The late Mrs. Luckhardt, whose maiden name was Annie Wilhelm, was born in Wilmot 61 years ago, a daughter of the late Jacob Wilhelm, who died in town here in 1914. She was married thirty-five years ago to her now bereaved husband and for many years resided on a farm in North Easthope. Thirteen years ago they moved onto the farm of the late Joseph M. Bender, adjoining this village, and last spring Mr. and Mrs. Luckhardt retired to New Hamburg. The deceased was a faithful adherent of the Baptist church and was highly esteemed by all. She leaves her sorrowing husband, two sons and two daughters to mourn her passing. The children are Lorne and Nelson, of Wilmot, Pearl (Mrs Earl Hesse), Gravel Road, anti Vivian at home. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon ht 2.80 o'clock to the Baptist church and Riverside Cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement,

JOHN SCHMIDT - By Record Correspondent - NORTH EASTHOPE, Jan. 2 - A stroke, suffered early Tuesday morning, ended in the unexpected death four hours later of Mary Jane Wilhelm, wife of John Schmidt, North Easthope township, Mrs. Schmidt, born in Wellesley, was in her 58^th year. She attended Lingelbach's Evangelical Church. Surviving are her husband, three sons, Elroy in Honolulu, Wilfrid and Eric at home, and six daughters, Luella, Mrs. Harry Daum, South Easthope, Edna, Mrs. Kenneth MacGregor, Ailsa Craig, Lillian, Mrs. George Diamond, Wilmot township, and Minnie, Mrytle and Helen at home, and nine grandchildren. Three brothers, George Wilhelm, South Easthope, Aaron of East Zorra and John of Stratford, also survive with three sisters, Mrs. John Snyder of Wallace, Mrs. Peter Lingelbach, North Easthope, and Mrs. Forsyth, Kitchener. Three sisters predeceased her. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the home at 1: 30 o'clock to Lingelbach's Evangelical Church. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery. The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg, after Sunday noon where the service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, New Hamburg.

Following an illness of 12 weeks, Andrew Bast, 85, of Wellesley, died last week at K-W Hospital. Born Jan. 12, 1871, in Wellesley Township, he was a farmer and lifelong resident of the district. He was a member of the Maple View Amish Wellesley. Mennonite Church
His wife, the former Elizabeth Schultz, predeceased him in 1946. Mrs. John B. Jantzi, 85, died Wednesday. February 26, at her home in Wellesley.

She and her husband, who Survives were married 64 years. They were wed Nov. 2. 1893, in Wilmot Township.

Born in Wilmot May 31, 1872, she was a daughter of the late George Bast and his wife, the former Leah Wilhelm. She was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church, third line of Wellesley Township.

Surviving, besides her husband, arc two sons, Ezra of RR 2, Wellesley, and Aaron Of Wellesley; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph J. (Violet Gerber of the fifth line of Wellesley; two brothers, Moses of Wellesley and Rudolph of Crosshill; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Brunk of Wellesley, Mrs. Catherine Roth and Mrs. Lydia Miller, both of Baden; eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The body rested at the residence where a short funeral was conducted Sunday at 1 p. m.. followed by a memorial service at Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church at 1:30 p.m. Bishop Samuel Roth officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

MOSES BAST

Moses Bast, 89, of Wellesley died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Wellesley Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Bast.

The late Mr. Bast farmed in Wellesley Township and retired to the village in 1926. He was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church, Wellesley.

He is survived by one brother, Rudy of Crosshill, and one sister, Mrs. Moses (Katie) Roth of Baden. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine Boshart in 1963; one son, Jacob; one daughter, Leah; eight brothers and eight sisters.

The body was at the Futher Brothers Funeral Home, Wellesley until Saturday afternoon when the service was held at Cedar Grove Church. Bishop Samuel Roth officiated and burial followed in the church cemetery.

BADEN-Mrs. Catherine Roth of Baden died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener after a brief illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Roth was born in Wilmot Township, June 8, 1881, and had resided in Baden since 1946. She was a member of St. Agatha Mennonite Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, George [should read Moses].

Surviving are three sons, Clarence of Waterloo; Milton of New Hamburg and Elmer of Baden; four daughters, Mrs. Clayton (Elmina) Swartzentruber, Mrs. Lester (Erma) Swartzentruber, both of Petersburg; Mrs. Sylvester (Luella) Jacky of St. Agatha and Mrs. Selina Wagler of Baden, 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home until noon Sunday when removal will be made to St. Agatha Mennonite Church where Rev. Gerald Swartzentruber and Rev. Elmer Swartzentruber will conduct the service at 3 p.m.

Contributions to the Womens Missionary Society will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

WELLESLEY, Jan. 5. - Andrew R. Wilhelm, 70, died suddenly at his home in Wellesley yesterday.

He was born in North Easthope, May 27, 1878, and farmed there all his life prior to retiring in Wellesley a few years ago.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilhelm. Surviving, besides his widow, the former Emma Paff, are two sons Oliver, North Easthope; Cecil, Kingwood; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Lohr, Milverton and Miss Barbara, North Easthope. Five grandchildren also survive.

Funeral will be held from the home in Wellesley at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. W.H. Campbell officiating. It will be followed by a memorial service at the North Easthope Reform Mennonite Church at 3 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Gamp, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be made in Lisbon Evangelical Cemetery. The body is resting at the home.

HAMPSTEAD - Mrs. Beaver, of RR 1, Gadshill, died today at home after a lengthy illness. She was 80.

The former Leah Wilhelm. she was born in North Easthope Townhip, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Wilhem. She was a member of Lisbon United Church and a life member of the Hampstead Women's Institute.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1933.

Survivors include a son Wellington, of Gadshill: two daughters, Mrs. W. J. (Bella) Ratz of Woodstock, Mrs. Orval (Vera) Schmidt, of Gadshill; a sister. Mrs. Peter (Luella) Jacobs, of Poole: five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter and a sister.

The body will be at the Futher Brothers Funeral Home in Wellesley afternoon on Sunday until noon on Monday when removal will be made to Lisbon United Church for service at 2:30p.m. Rev. J. W. Siebert will officiate. Burial will be in Lisbon United cemetery.

Kincardine - Funeral service was held April 5 for Milton Dahmer of Underwood, Ont., who died Thursday at Kincardine Hospital. He was 80.

Born in North Easthope Township, Mr. Dahmer had been a retired farmer, tax collector and assessor. He was a member of Underwood United Church.

Service was held at the Linklater Funeral Home here with burial at Tiverton cemetery.

Mr. Dahmer is survived by his wife, the former Minnie Sophia Berndt; two sons, Earl of RR 2, Tiverton and Ray of Owen Sound; a brother Wesley of Galt; two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Clara) Lederman of Kitchener and Mrs. William (Barbara) Brigner of Circleville, Ohio; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

His fellow-citizens of St. Jacobs have much sympathy with Mr John Geiger, who has been called upon to mourn the death of his wife who passed away at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilhelm, near Philipsburg on the evening of the 14th November. The deceased had been in poor health for some time and a few weeks ago went to stay at the home of her parents for a time, not thinking that in place of returning to her earthly home at St. Jacobs she would be called to her heavenly home, She leaves six small children to the care of her husband, whose loss is indeed great. A pretty autumn wedding was solemnized in the New Hamburg Baptist Church on Saturday, September 26, at 2 o'clock, when Mary Gertrude Baufelt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Baufelt of Hespeler was united in marriage to Mr. Wellington Wilhelm of Wilmot, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Wilhelm. Rev. E. G. Dale performed the ceremony before a bank of ferns and fall flowers, the guests' seats being designated by a bow of ribbon holding fern and asters.

The bride, who was very charming in a gown of white sild and chalance lace wore the customary bridal veil and carried a shower bouquet of butterfly roses and fern. She was attended by the groom's sister, Miss Alice, gowned in yellow georgette with lace, who carried American Beauty roses. Little Margaret Wilhelm of Whitby, niece of the groom, was very sweet in Nile green georgette with cape to match. She carried a basket of asters and baby breath. The groom's attendant was Mr. William Baufelt of Guelph, brother of the bride. Mrs. D. Becker rendered Lohengrin's wedding march and Miss Louise Boettger sang very sweetly "Thanks Be To God", while the register was being signed. The ushers were the groom's brothers, Messrs. Solomon and Herman Wilhelm.

After the ceremony about fifty invited guests were entertained at Wilby farm. During the reception M. L.G. Pequegnat rendered a solo and later proposed a toast to the bride to which the groom responded. The tables were prettily decorated with pink and white, a large wedding bell hanging over the tables.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm left by motor for the thousand Islands and points east and on their return will reside on the groom's farm in Wilby. The bride motored in navy blue dress with coat and hat to match. The many gifts testified to the great esteem in which both bride and groom are held.

William A. Koch of 72 Allen St. E., Waterloo, died today at K-W Hospital. He was 82.

Born in Wilmot Township, Mr. Koch lived in Waterloo for 40 years. He was active in the Waterloo Horticultural Society and served on the board for a number of years. Mr. Koch attended First Baptist Church Waterloo. His first wife, the former Isabella Kline, died in 1935, and his second wife, the former Bella Curtis, died in 1960. Also predeceasing him were his parents, Mr. and Mrs Henry Koch; two brothers and one sister.

Luckhardt legacy going to auction

NEW HAMBURG - The little gold brooch, with its 10-karat shine, is 105 years old.
But it still sparkles in the wrinkled palm of your hand.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Bonnie Berndt said of her grandfather's precise handiwork, which is up for auction through a New Hamburg bid-taking firm.
Her grandfather was Emerson David Luckhardt, a prominent jeweller, watchmaker and optometrist in the town.
The pizza shop on Peel Street, just a short stroll from the Luckhardt family home on Jacob Street, is where Luckhardt's jewelry shop once stood, shoehorned into a long-ago New Hamburg alleyway. The brooch helped him create that shop.
When he was in his twenties, Luckhardt apprenticed with the town jeweller, Lafayette Hostetler.
Luckhardt, with a fine eye for detail, wanted to prove his mettle with precious metals. So he crafted this brooch by hand. His initials are press-fit with three pocket-watch jewels.
The inscription says: Made at L. Hostetler's. New Hamburg. Ont. Feb. 1913.
"The inscription is so tiny," Berndt said.
"It was kind of his resumé. He proved to this guy he knew what he was doing."

Eventually, the jeweller sold all his stock to Luckhardt, who set up his jewelry and optometry operation in an old bank. He kept the jewelry in the bank vaults.....

LUCKHARDT Emerson David

On Friday, July 30, 1982, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Emerson Luckhardt, age 93, of 159 Jacob St., New Hamburg.

He was a faithful member of the former First Baptist Church, New Hamburg. He graduated from the School of Optometry in 1920 and practised in New Hamburg from 1911 to 1977. He also had a jewelry business. He was a member of the New Dominion Lodge # 205, New Hamburg, the Avon Lodge #4I, 100F, Stratford, the Nith Valley OES #285; an honorary member of the New Hamburg Board of Trade and had also served as a member of the town council.

Son of the late David Luckhardt and the former Mary Wilhelm. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Abigail Otto, whom he married July 1, 1916 and two daughters Dorothy at home and Ruth (Mrs. Harvey Berndt) of Kingston Also surviving are two granddaughters, Brenda of Calgary and Bonnie of Vancouvor. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward.

Rested at the Mark ,Jutzi Funeral Home, New Hamburg Chapel, 291 Huron St. Saturday, July : 31 and Sunday, Aug. 1., where service was held at 2: 30 p.m. with Rev. William Wood officiating. Inter-ment in Riverside cemetery, New Hamburg.

Henry Witzel

Dead is Henry Witzel, 76, of Kitchener, instantly killed shortly after 6 pm Saturday, December 6th 1952, at Weber and Scott Streets. Police said the man, who walked with the aid of two canes, was struck by a car driven by Payson H. Hartung, 28, of 55 Irvin Street. The officers said the Hartung car was west bound on Weber Street. Henry Witzel had just stepped off the curb to cross the intersection. Police said the man was struck by the right headlight and the hood of the car. Coroner C.C. Belyea attended at the scene. The fatality was Kitchener's sixth in 1952. Hartung has been charged with careless and dangerous driving. Mr. Witzel was born in Wilmot Centre, Ontario, on July 12, 1876, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Witzel. He was a former employee of the Philip Gies Foundry Ltd. His wife, was the former Mary Ann Heuther, died April 10th, 1948. Surving are three sons, Lincoln of Hamilton, Ontario, Wilfred of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Harold of Petersberg, Ontario, two daughters, Mrs. Violet Nunn and Mrs. Bernice Koening of Hamilton, Ontario, one brother William of Los Angeles, California, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services to be held Wednesday at 3: 30 p.m., from the Ratz Bechtel Funeral Home and interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Rev C.R. Kauth, pastor of the Wilmot Centre EUB Church will officiate.

Simeon Witzel of 80 Scott Street, a member of Zion Evangelical Church passed away today at the Kitchener Waterloo Hospital, following a brief illness, July 28th 1948, at the age of 65 years.
Born July 5th 1882 at Wilmot Centre, Ontario, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Witzel. He had worked as a tailor all of his life.
Surviving are his widow the former Nettie Hicks, and two brothers, William, of Los Angeles and Henry of Kitchener, Ontario.
The body is resting at the Ratz Bechtel Funeral Home and the funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery with Rev C.F. Barthel officiating.

"Waldemar was born in a farmhouse near Milverton, ON, where an English family lived in another part of the house. As he learned to talk, he was bilingual. In 1894 when he was 8 years old, his parents moved to New Hamburg, ON, There was no high school there, so upon passing his entrace exams, at age 13, he went to work in a general store for $1.25 a week, and didn't get to high school until 8 years later. during that time, he worked as a salesman in stores in New Hamburg, Kitchener, Toronto, and Leamington. In accordance to family tradition and custom, except for a small allowance, all his earnings went into the family budget. when he was 21, as was family custom, he was on his own.

With $21.00 in his pocket, he started out as a salesman, working in Kitchener, then west to Moose jaw, SK (it was 52 degrees below 0). In May he went to the Okanagan Valley, BC (his mother's brother Ben's place). He stayed, earning $2.50 a day, to drive a team of bronchos for work at different contracts. He also worked as an assistant minister. Ten years after leaving home, he was ordained as a Minister, with the United Church. Minister emeritus Zion United Church, Brantford. Lieutenant, Nineteenth Battalion.

Son of Daniel S. Williams; b. Milverton; ed. New Hamburg p.s. and H.s.; Teaching at Galt P.s. ; University College 1915-16; c.o.T.c.

He enlisted in February 1916 in the 111th Battalion, in which he was promoted to Sergeant and then received his commission shortly before going overseas in August. He joined the 19th Battalion at the front in October. Two weeks before his death he was appointed Adjutant to his battalion. After going through the battle of Vimy Ridge he fell a month later, being instantly killed by a shell at Fresnoy in an attack on the enemy's trenches. Buried at Mont St. Eloy.
