    Samuel Horst, "(His father was a distant relative to old Christian and David Horst) son of David and Leah (Mosser) Horst, was born in Canarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (Did not receive date of moving to Canada), October 30th, 1841. He was first married to Mary Ann, daughter of Henry Martin of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She was born September 23rd, 1842, and died January 3rd, 1872. On October 27th, 1872, he was again married to Magdalena, daughter of John S. and Elizabeth (Burkhart) Brubacher. She was the widow of the late Michael Brubacher (See No. 1489 for full information). She was born April 12th, 1850. They reside about three miles west of St. Jacobs. Mr. Horst has a family of seven children, the eldest four of whom were born in Aldborough Township, Elgin County, near Clachan P.O., while the younger three were born in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, near St. Jacobs."

    Horst, David B., son of Samuel M. and Magdalena (Brubacher) Horst, was born near Rodney, Ont., August, 1873; died June 6, 1965, in his 92nd year after spending nearly 12 years in the K-W Hospital, Kitchener, Ont. On March 15, 1898, he was married to Mary G. Martin, who preceded him in death in 1934. Surviving are 5 sons (John, Isaac, Levi, Samuel, and Henry), 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one brother (Menno). Three brothers and 3 sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Wisler Mennonite Church, where he served many years as a deacon. Interment was made in the Conestoga Church Cemetery, St. Jacobs, Ont.

    JOHN B. HORST

    John B. Horst, 85, of Floradale, died Saturday Nov. 26, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Noah M. Gingrich, Floradale, after a short illness.

    He was born April 10, 1875, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel M. Horst. Feb 20 1900, he married Nancy Reist. She predeceased him in February. 1942.

    Surviving are one daughter Mrs. Noah (Leah) Gingrich of Floradale; six sons, Menno of Floradale, Samuel, John and Isaac of RR 1 Elmira, Noah of St. Jacobs and Enos of RR 2, Drayton; two brothers, David at the K-W Hospital and Menno B. of St. Jacobs, 30 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

    He was also predeceased by one daughter, a brother and three sisters.

    The body was at his residence where a private funeral service was held Tuesday, followed by a public service at the North Woolwich Meeting House. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

    John married Nancy "Annie" Reist 20 Feb 1900. Nancy (daughter of Menno Reist and Mary P.     Horst, -- Daniel B., was born in Bothwell, Ont., Aug. 4, 1876; died Aug. 9, 1955, at his home in Elmira, Ont.; after a lengthy illness; aged 79 y. 5 d. On June 25, 1898, he was married to Annie Weber, who preceded him in death Feb. 23, 1953. Surviving are 9 sons and 3 daughters (Samuel, St. Jacobs; Moses, Goshen, Ind.; George, Conestoga; Elias, Elmira; Lovina-Mrs. Otto Wrasse, Drayton; Daniel, Wallenstein; Annie-Mrs. Addison Bauman, St. Jacobs; Simeon, missionary to B. E. Africa; Lydia Ann-Mrs. Howard S. Bauman, Elmira; Nathaniel, Floradal; Osiah, Peterburg; and Aaron, at home), also 3 brothers and one sister (David, Kitchener; John, Floradale; Menno, St. Jacobs; and Leah-Mrs. David Kraemar, Three Bridges), 46 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services on Aug. 12 at the Elmira Mennonite Church were in charge of O. D. Snider and Simon Martin. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

    Horst, Menno B., son of Samuel and Magdalena (Brubacher) Horst, was born in Waterloo County, Ont., July 30, 1885; died at Heritage House, St. Jacobs, Ont., Aug. 3, 1975; aged 90 y. On May 24, 1910, he was married to Lovina Bauman, who preceded him in death on June 15, 1975. Surviving are 6 daughters (Lena David Frey, Mary Mrs. Lorne Shantz, Barbara Mrs. Noah Horst, Martha Mrs Roy Koch, Emma Mrs. Raymond Brubacher, and Verna Mrs. Roy Waters), 4 sons (David, Elam, Amon, and Melvin), 43 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.     Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Horst. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, after 7 p.m. this evening, until noon Wednesday, then to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church for funeral and committal services at 3 p.m., Rev.     There is a photo of Lydia Ann Bauman taken in July 2020. She is sitting outside her Cambridge retirement home, surrounded by family, birthday balloons and a huge sign declaring she was turning 105. The love of family was evident in her smile.

    Reaching 105 was a remarkable milestone for the Mennonite woman who was born into the Old Order faith, living without electricity, running water or modern conveniences.

    "She kept her mind active," said one of her sons, Charlie Bauman, explaining why his mom lived so long. "She was a daily reader of The Record and would go through one book a week.

    "She also kept physically active."

    Lydia Ann kept her mind sharp by embracing everything and everyone around her, memorizing the names of new people she met, always engaged in all aspects of life.

    "People were amazed how much she remembered," said Charlie. "She took an interest in others."

    Jim Bauman, another son, said his mom also loved nature, trees, flowers, birds, even clouds. She noticed everything around her.

    Lydia Ann was born in St. Jacobs on July 20, 1915, one of 12 children to farmers Daniel and Annie Horst. When her father fell ill, he moved the family to the healing warmth of Florida. Lydia Ann was two. After four years, they returned to Elmira.

    In Florida, Daniel had dabbled in truck driving and back in Canada, he purchased a truck to carry his farm produce to the Kitchener market. This modern convenience was strictly against the Old Order way of life and the family had to leave the faith, joining a more modern order of Mennonites. Her family said Lydia Ann never spoke about this time when everyone she knew in church, their very way of life was suddenly and dramatically changed. But as always, Lydia Ann thrived in this new normal.

    Though very bright and an avid reader, Lydia Ann was not interested in school and left when she was 13 to help at home. She would also work for other farm families, mostly doing housework and caring for infants.

    After leaving the Old Order faith, the family joined the Elmira Mennonite Church where she met Howard Bauman. The couple married in 1940 and would have six children: Jim, Lucy, Esther, Lois, Charlie and Ken who died in 1973.

    Howard would have the distinction of being among the last Mennonite ministers chosen by "lot" which meant three candidates were asked to randomly choose a bible.

    The one who opted for the bible containing a hidden paper was appointed. Howard trained at the Ontario Mennonite Bible School in Kitchener and served as minister at the Elmira church from 1945 to 1966, moving on to serve two decades at a church in New York state before retiring and returning with Lydia Ann to Elmira. In 1987, the couple moved to Fairview Suites in Cambridge. Howard died of a heart attack in 2010.

    In the home, Lydia Ann made a point of getting to know everyone and she contributed to the many fundraising quilts being made in the craft room.

    Lydia Ann's daughter Esther Bauman recalled that fitness was an important part of her mom's routine.

    "She loved to walk and walked about two kilometres a day," said Esther. "When we would walk together, it was hard keeping up with her."

    Lydia Ann walked regardless of the weather, bundling up against the cold. Walking indoors, her steady pace kept her moving forward beyond her 105th birthday.

    Two years ago, Lydia Ann had a bowel obstruction and though doctors didn't expect she'd survive without surgery, the centenarian refused.

    "We were getting ready to put her in a hospice," said Jim. The obstruction not only cleared but Lydia Ann was soon out walking again. During the pandemic lockdown, she'd stroll the home's grounds or indoors. There was a determination that kept her motivated, at least until last October when she had a fall and dementia began to darken her good nature. Lydia Ann died on Feb. 13, 2021.

    Charlie created a list of life lessons learned from his mother, one which spoke of being compassionate toward the destitute, then taking action. He remembered how she would welcome the many homeless people who came to the door of their Elmira parsonage looking for a meal.

    "She didn't turn them away," said Charlie, noting she even took in a neglected, sickly baby and nursed it back to health.

    In a eulogy, daughter Lucy Goshow said of her mother, "She had a strong will to live life to the fullest."

    Esther described her mother as "gentle, caring, strong, amazing, extraordinary, a woman with dignity."

In 1946 he was ordained at the Mannheim Mennonite Church and began 18 years of ministry there. In 1964 he began a twenty-year ministry at Danforth Mennonite Church. From 1970-79 he was employed part time at Dellcrest Children's Centre and in 1977 completed a Social Service course through Seneca College. A highlight of his ministry at Danforth was the development of the St. Clair O'Connor Community and his chaplaincy there from 1984-94 completed a life-time of pastoral service.The family wishes to thank the many people who have supported Osiah and Fern in his time of illness, particularly those from the Danforth Mennonite Church and Masarypark Homes.Friends will be received at the Giffen-Mack "Danforth" Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 2570 Danforth Avenue (at Main St. subway), Toronto on Wednesday, July 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service at the Danforth Mennonite Church, 2174 Danforth Avenue, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 7. Her first husband, William G. Martin, predeceased her in 1945 and her second husband, Herbert Mewhiney in 1960. Dear mother of Mrs. Douglas (Esther) Waugh and Mrs. Rose (Annabelle) Waugh, both of Kitchener, Mrs. George (Lena) Belback and Mrs. Anthony (Bertha) Plein, both of Elmira, J. David Martin of Conestogo. One son and one sister predeceased her. Sister of Mrs. Menno Knarr, Daniel Kraemer and Israel Kraemer, all of Route 1, St. Jacobs. Seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. Friends called at the Dreisinger funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira, after Sunday noon, until Tuesday noon when removal was made to Gale Presbyterian Church for funeral service at 3 pm. Interment in the Elmira Mennonite Cemetery.

A family interment will take place in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.     HORST, Elam Bauman September 9, 1918 - November 3, 2011 Elam Horst, age 93, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2011. He will be missed by his loving wife Myrtle (Feick), with whom he enjoyed almost 70 years of marriage. He is survived by his children Gloria King, Dale, Mary Lou (Jim) Snyder, Myrna (Robert) Schlegel, Steven (Sandra), 14 grand- children, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He leaves behind his sisters, Mary Schantz, Barbara Horst, Martha Koch and Emma Brubacher, one brother, Melvin (Leeta), and brother-in-law Roy Waters. He is predeceased by his parents, Menno and Lovina Horst, two sisters, Lena Fry and Verna Waters, two brothers, David and Amon, son-in-law Reverend Edward King, and grand- daughter-in-law Pamela Snyder. He grew up in St. Jacobs and was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. At age 47, after his son Dale took over his wholesale potato business, he went back to Conestoga College and received his teaching certificate in Adult Education. He enjoyed his career teaching math at Conestoga College, staying on until he was 70 years old. The family wishes to thank Pauline Donovan and all the caring and loving staff at the Village of Winston Park. Visitation will take place at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home on Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, 1308 King St. N., St. Jacobs on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow. Private interment St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.     AMON "AL" HORST 1920 - 2007 Amon died at his home in New Hamburg, surrounded by the love and support of his family, on Friday, April 13, 2007, at the age of 86. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Hilda Horst, who predeceased him April 1, 2007. Loving father of Dana Currie and her partner Mike Bott of Kitchener, Brian and his wife Sharon of Toronto, Darryl of Kitchener, Cathy and her husband Alan MacDonald of Ottawa, Peter and his wife Lisa of Kitchener and Susan and her husband Guy Cameron of Kitchener. Proud and loving grandfather of Rebecca and her husband Jeff Hadaway, Sarah Currie, Katy Horst, Alexandra Seebach, Scott MacDonald, Lauren, Danielle and Emily Horst, Jacob and Quinn Cameron. Amon will be lovingly remembered by his sisters and brothers, Mary Shantz, Babara Horst, Elam and his wife Myrtle Horst, Martha and her husband Roy Koch, Emma Brubacher and Melvin and his wife Leeta Horst. Predeceased by his parents, Lovina (Bauman) and Menno Horst; a daughter, Nancy Heather in infancy; grandson, Adam Horst; sisters, Lena Frey and Verna Waters and brother, David Horst. Amon served overseas with the Royal Canadian Navy on Convoy Duty during WW II crossing the North Atlantic twenty-four times. He was a proud member for forty-one years of the Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 and was retired from Uniroyal where he worked for thirty-eight years. Amon enjoyed baseball, especially his favourite team, the Cleveland Indians. Amon will be remembered for his love of telling stories and his expressive opinions. Friends are invited to bring and share their special photographs and memories of Amon with his family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private family burial will take place at Wilmot Mennonite Cemetery on Tuesday morning. The funeral service to celebrate Amon's life and faith will be held in the chapel of the funeral home, on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at 1: 30 p.m., with Pastor Gary Horst officiating. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family in the funeral home's Fireside Reception Room for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
