The Late Harry Rayner - Above is a recent picture of Harry Rayner, veteran blacksmith, who passed away at the hospital early Sunday morning. Struck by an automobile Friday evening on Dickson Street. Mr. Rayner was removed to the hospital where it was discovered that he had not been seriously injured. Shock occasioned by the accident is believed to have been the cause of his death. Mr. Rayner was the last horseshoer in the city. He was in his 76th year, and was born in Barrie, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Rayner. It was there that he served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith and 32 years ago he came to Galt. For a number of years he worked for the late James Cromarty and then in 1900 established his own business, which he had operated since that time. He was an expert at the anvil and in addition in horseshoeing did a lot of custom work. He often recalled that when horses were in vogue one of Galt's livery stables had 48 horses. Mr. and Mrs. Rayner celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on July 7, 1947. Mr. Rayner was a member of Galt Lodged 257 A.F. and A.M. of the I.O.O.F. and I.O.F., and was an adherent of Wesley United Church in his younger days and was a great baseball and rugby fan and seldom missed a game. Besides his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Robinson, he is survived by two sons, Fred of Hespeler and Ivan of Hamilton; two sisters, Mrs. Cunningham of Richmond Hill and Mrs. Chas. Brown of Barry, and four brothers, Alfred, Walter and Frank of Barrie and James of Galt. The late Mr. Rayner is resting at his residence, 73 Ainslie Street North for funeral service on Tuesday at 2 pm, with interment in Mount View Cemetery.
