    Pioneer of Town Gone
Late William R. Bulmer Recalled Elmira With Three Log Huts
    Early Settler of Peel
He Came Into Elmira Walking Blazed Trail With Father

One of the old guard in the history of this community passed to his rest last Monday morning when Mr. William R. Bulmer died in Listowel in his ninety-second year. The late Mr. Bulmer was hale and strong until only about two months ago, his remarkable vigor at his advanced age being a constant marvel to his friends. Born in Yorkshire, England, he came to this country with his parents when a lad of seventeen, making his way to Peel Township after a short stay in New York and Toronto, or "Muddy York" as it was then known.

    Early Elmira

The late Mr. Bulmer had his first glimpse of Elmira on his way with his father to take up the homestead in Peel Township. Walking along the blazed trail with a bag of flour on his back, brought from German Mills, the pioneer homesteader came upon three log huts which represented the coming Elmira. The Bulmer family and the Owens family were the only white families living in Peel township for some time subsequent to this, although there were a number of colored families in the township who had settled there after escaping from the slave states south of the border.

    Went To Listowel

The late Mr. Bulmer remained on the same homestead for the remainder of his life until ten years ago when he removed to Listowel. This farm was recently sold by his son, Mr. Wesley Bulmer to Mr. Charles Matthews. After ten years residence in Listowel, the death of Mr. Bulmer took place. Twice married, his first wife was Miss Liza Seton, daughter of Mr. John Seton, one of the pioneers of Elmira. His second wife was Miss Palmer, of Listowel, who survives him. He leaves besides three sons and two daughters: Alfred of Neepawa, Manitoba, Byron, of Oakville and Wesley of Elmira, Mrs. Lambkin of Fordwich, and Mrs. Cunningham of Elmira. The funeral takes place this afternoon from the home in Listowel to the Elmira Methodist Church and thence to the Elmira Cemetery. Service are being conducted by a former pastor at the Wallenstein Church, Rev. Mr. Monsinger, of Brantford.

    WESLEY BULMER PASSED AWAY
AFTER LONG STRUGGLE WITH DREAD ANAEMIA VICTIM IS OVERCOME

On the day before Christmas there passed out of our midst a well-known citizen in the person of Wesley Seaton Bulmer. The deceased was born at Wallenstein on the 12th of February 1877, the son of William R. Bulmer and Eliza A. (Seaton) Bulmer. He grew up to manhood on his father's farm and was married on May 4th 1898 to Miss Lilavet C. Cunningham. They lived on the old homestead near Wallenstein until 1921 when Mr. Bulmer was advised by his doctor to give up heavy work. He had had an attack of anaemia four years before that and the disease again made itself felt. So they retired from the farm and came to Elmira to live. While living here his health at times was fairly good, but still that insidious disease pernicious anaemia gradually weakened him until the end came rather quickly last Thursday. The deceased is survived by his sorrowing wife and one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Sippel. One son died in infancy. Two brothers and two sisters also survive, namely Alfred Bulmer of Minitonas, Man., Byron Bulmer of Oakville, Mrs. Wm. Lambkin of Gorrie and Mrs. Wm. Cunningham of Elmira.

The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon. Rev. Mr. Sykes of Toronto preached the funeral sermon; Mr. Guthrie of Guelph sang "In the Haven of Rest" and also gave a short address. The pallbearers were: Pem Hosea, Ed. Tyack, W. W. Martinson, Chas. Matthews, Harold Sippel and Henry Hedrich. Besides many friends from the home district the following were present from a distance: Mrs. Hay and son Frank and Mrs. Shaw of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Lambkin of Gorrie, Mrs. Edwards of Milverton, Mr. J.H. Cunningham of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Bulmer of Oakville, Mrs. Getty and son Harold of Galt, Mr. George McAllister, his son George and his daughter Doctor Joan McAllister, Mrs. Somerville and Mrs. Copas all of Guelph, Mr. and Mrs. Scherer of Kitchener, Mr. Hardy Bulmer and Mrs. Drummond of Kitchener.

The local hockey club, of which Mr. Bulmer was president last year, sent a fine floral tribute. Some time ago they had secured a photograph of the deceased to keep as a remembrance.

Wesley married Lilavet C. "Lily" Cunningham 4 May 1896, Glen Allan, Peel Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. Lilavet (daughter of Andrew Cunningham and Elizabeth Adelaide Stone) was born 1876, Wellesley Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 1945; was buried , Elmira Union Cemetery, Elmira, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada.
