Beaupres Soon Back In New Location

Dunker Construction Company, Ltd., is now in the process of rebuilding the Wettlaufer block, 112 King St., South, Waterloo which was destroyed in a $100,000 fire July 5th.

Beaupre's Decorating Centre was originally housed in the bottom portion of the building and the top floor had four apartments.

The Beaupre, store will return after the work is finished. Apartments will also be built above the store. It is expected the block will be finished in about a month.

The building is owned by Mrs. William Wettlaufer, who received burns on the arm and chest as she fled from a rear exit of the upstairs apartment in the fire.

Eleven persons were left homeless and the Beaupre store which had just recently been remodeled, was completely destroyed. The loss was only partially covered by insurance.

Harold and Louis Beaupre who operate the Beaupre Store, are conducting business from a smaller adjacent store

WATERLOO'S WORST FIRE DESTROYS BEAUPRE'S STORE
    [112 King St., South, Waterloo]

Wettlaufer Block Tenants Flee $100,000 Blaze

One of the most disastrous fires in the modern history of Waterloo gutted the City's newest business last Friday night, when the newly remodelled Beaupre's Paint and Wallpaper store was almost totally destroyed.

The building which housed the store and four apartments, was owned by Mrs. William Wettlaufer. Mrs. Wettlaufer received severe burns on the arms and chest as she fled from a rear exit, of the upstairs apartment.

It was on May 16th, that Harold and Louis Beaupre opened their new store, after months of preparation and re-modelling. The most modern design and fixtures were incorporated into the store, and all who visited it considered it the showplace of Waterloo. In a matter of minutes, the results of months of planning and preparation went up in smoke, as the high wind fanned the flames in all directions. Damage is tentatively set at $100,000.

The Waterloo Fire Department received the fire alarm at 6.32 p.m., and were on the scene two minutes later, but the fire had gained too much headway. Their efforts were directed at confining it, and preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Eight firemen, including Deputy fire Chief Charles Waurechen, received minor injuries.

All apartment tenants except Mrs. Walter Schnarr managed to get out of the building without help. Mrs. Schnarr was brought down a ladder from a front window.

She insisted that a bird cage with a budgie be rescued before she would leave the building. It was reported another bird perished in the fire.

The area for blocks around was enveloped by dense smoke from burning paint which could be seen for miles.

Both Waterloo and Kitchener fire departments fought the fire for two hours before it was considered under control.

Twenty off-duty Kitchener firemen and 20 from the Waterloo department worked under Chief Pagel and Fire Chef Kenneth Putnam of Kitchener.
