Family, friends of drowned toddler raise $20,000 for Cambridge Memorial

CAMBRIDGE \emdash After Jolene Donovan died unexpectedly a year ago, her family feared the two-and-a-half-year-old's short life would be forgotten.

The Cambridge girl accidentally drowned in her family's swimming pool in August 2021.

"That was their biggest fear, that people would forget about her and as a parent they would say, 'We thought we had Jolene's whole life to teach her about the world,' but now it's time to teach the world about Jolene," said family friend April Girard.

Friends and family came together to organize the Jolene's Wings fundraiser this past weekend. She and husband Andrew Girard along with Tabitha Hudson and Wes Reinhart organized a scavenger hunt to raise money for Cambridge Memorial Hospital's pediatric unit.

The event, had raised almost $20,000 Friday, far surpassing its $10,000 goal.

The winner of the 50/50 draw, a university student in Montreal named Megan, donated her $10,000 winnings to the fundraiser.

"Jolene loved bugs and loved butterflies and bees and she was always picking flowers," Hudson said, explaining the fundraiser's name.

The scavenger hunt had a driving route of about 50 kilometres through Breslau and the townships, with five stops. At each stop participants completed a task and took a selfie.

Hudson said there are plans to make the fundraiser an annual event.

"Everyone will have these memories," Hudson said. "We were able to spend a day together and do these amazing things. Who has the time these days to just go for a drive with the people you love?"

It is with heavy, heavy hearts we announce the passing of our sweet little Jolene Lyn on Saturday August 14, 2021. Born January 29, 2019 in Cambridge, Jolene was the beloved daughter of Charlie and Rebecca "Becky" and loving little sister to Blaine. Loving granddaughter, Jolene will be greatly missed by "A-pa and Mamma "Maw", Gord & Jackie Clemens and "Nana and Papa", Guy & Joan Donovan and great-granny Lucy Donovan. Darling little niece to Janet "J" and Aaron Shea, Jennifer and Andy Tonner, Ashley "Sashie" and Sean Giacomini, Sammy and James MacDonald and Megan and Chris Monk. She was a beautiful little cousin to Kelsey, Samantha, Cameron (Tristian), Mikayla "Molly" and Matt (Hannah) Tonner, Jordon and Braydon (Diana "Moe") Gartley, Gracie Shea, Hailey and Hannah MacDonald and Cason and Everett Monk.

At the tender age of 2 ½, Jolene did more in her short time than most children her age, if she wanted to do something, nothing was going to stop her. She certainly looked up to her big brother and everything he did, she had to do. There was nothing she wouldn't attempt to do; she was beyond her years.

The Trillium Foundation helped our darling little girl live on, her heart valves are keeping two little one's hearts beating and her beautiful blue eyes have given sight to two children.

Jolene was a delightful little girl who will be greatly missed by a wide range of family and friends who loved her dearly.
