    Local Couple 50 Years Married
Mr. And Mrs. Franz Rudow Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary: Married in Germany

Mr. and Mrs. Franz Rudow are today celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary. Fifty years ago today, July 20, 1883, they were married at Perritz, Germany.

In commemoration, the Ladies' Aid of St. James Lutheran church are holding a surprise celebration in the basement of the church and a huge wedding cake all lighted with candles is being presented to the happy couple.

Both are 73 years of age and enjoy the best of health. Mr. Rudow can not forbear from being active in the plumbing and tinsmithing trade in which he has been engaged for 60 years and each day works with his son at the shop. Both Mr. and Mrs. Rudow were born at Perritz, Germany. The year after they were married their parents and the parents' children all decided to come to Canada. They came over on the steamship Moravia, now out of use. Of this group who came to Canada at this time there remains only Mr. and Mrs. Franz Rudow, of Elmira, Mrs. Rudow's brother, Mr. C. Schultz, 82 of Pembroke, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. W. Schultz, also 82 of Pembroke.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudow lived at Pembroke for 11 years, moving from there to Waterloo where they lived for 10 years. From Waterloo they moved to Elmira in July, 1906, and have lived here since that time, 27 years ago. He has been established in his present business for the past 21 years.

There were seven children, seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A reunion of the family is being held on Saturday when visitors are expected from Toronto, Kitchener and New Dundee.

    Another Defender Gone

The fellow citizens and acquaintances of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rudow, Sr., will sympathize with them in the sad loss they have sustained through the war by the death of their son Arthur. Last week we reported that the young man was seriously ill overseas with influenza. This week we are called on to chronicle his death, official notice of which was received by his parents on Monday. Deceased was a young man to whom respect and gratitude is due, and in whose heart there stirred the true patriotic spirit which has made the young men of Canada famous throughout the world. Early in the war he enlisted in the ranks of the 118th Regiment. He did not wait for conscription but threw his weight into the fray on the side of justice, at a time when men counted most. Although he did not live to return to his native town, he will always be remembered as one of its heroes. He was overseas since January, 1817. A large proportion of this time way spent in the trenches where he was spared by the bullets, but where he fell victim to the disease which carried away so many of the young men of his age who stayed at home. He leaves his parents, three brothers, and three sisters and a host of friends to mourn their loss. His photo, which arrived too late for this issue, will appear in our next.

    Death Occurs on Friday

Elsie Rudow Brown Passes Away After Weeks of Suffering

A particularly sad death occurred at the Kitchener-Waterloo hospital on Friday, April the ninth, when Elsie Rudow, the young wife of Jacob Brown of Elmira passed away following a lengthy illness. She had been a patient at the Kitchener hospital for about two months, where she had undergone several operations for mastoid and although at times she rallied the poison had gone through her system and eventually caused her death.

The late Mrs. Brown was born in Waterloo on the 6th of January, 1900. When six years old she came with her family to Elmira, where she has resided for the past twenty years. Of a pleasing disposition she was highly thought of in this community. On August 27th, 1924, she was married to Jacob Brown. Besides her husband she leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Franz Rudow, two brothers, Fred and William of Elmira and one sister Mrs. Annie Sanford of Toronto. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr. Brown also for Mr. and Mrs. Rudow who since coming to Elmira have lost four children.

The funeral, held on Monday afternoon, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Rev. L. Kalbfleisch preached the funeral sermon from the text Hosea 6,1. The following were pallbearers: Alvin Brubacher, Clarence Jung, Norman Ruppel, Bern Norman, Edgar Rahn and Harold Cress.
