J. H. Shellard Rutherford, of 36 Barrie St., Cambridge (Galt), died Sunday, Dec. 23, at the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital. Mr. Rutherford was predeceased by his wife, the former Ora Elizabeth Mason, in 1971 and is survived by two daughters, Mrs. F. J. H. (Mary) Simpson of Dundas and Mrs. Gerald R. (Jean) Brown of Clarkson; one son, John S. of Cambridge (Galt); one sister, Isabel of Buffalo and eight grandchildren. Interment was at Mount View Cemetery.

After the Great War and during the Roaring 20's, a small retail hardware shop was opened in the town of Galt, Ontario, Canada, by J.H. Shellard Rutherford. Right from the beginning, innovation and foresight distinguished Rutherford from his competitors. Anticipating a need, J.H. was one of the first in the region to tap into the growing demand for electrical products by stocking a wide variety of electrical goods and supplies.In 1962, Jack Rutherford took the reins from his father, changing the direction of the company from retail hardware to architectural hardware distribution. He introduced to the Canadian marketplace a more global offering by importing innovative, high-quality products which he designed specifically for the North American market.<sup>1a
