Christopher Nahrgang, "The old pioneer settler of this highly respectable family was Christopher, son of George Nahrgang. he was born in Lahrbach, Province of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, December 25th, 1801. When a young man he chose weaving as his trade and followed it for a number of years. In 1825 he emigrated to America and settled in Canada, choosing Berlin, Waterloo County, Ontario, as the place where he could most successfully carry on his trade. He had his shop at old Joseph Schneider's until he was married to one of Mr. Schneider's daughters, then they moved to near New Hamburg, Ontario, where he followed farming for many years. He was married, April 28th, 1833, to Mary, daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Eby) Schneider. She was born April 1st, 1808, and died at New Hamburg, Ontario, March 22nd, 1887. He died June 22nd, 1886. To them were born eight children"

Pre. Joseph Nahrgang was born July 26, 1834, on the old homestead adjoining the village of New Hamburg, Waterloo Co., Ont. He was a son of the late Christopher Nahrgang, who came from Switzerland to Canada in 1825. Dec. 22, 1857, deceased was married to mary Shantz, daughter of the late John C. Shantz. He was ordained to the ministry for the Blenheim district June 16, 1876, and had charge of this congregation up to the time of his death, which took place on Monday, Feb. 16, 1903. On Sunday morning, Feb. 15, he, with his wife, went tot he Geiger M.H., a distance of four miles. After services he took dinner with his nephew, Oliver Nahrgang, returning home in the afternoon. After tea he, accompanied by his granddaughter, went to He. Bean M.H., where he preached a sermon from John 3: 16, and started for home after the service in his usual good health. When a short distance from home he was stricken with paralysis. He was quickly taken home, where he lingered in an unconscious condition until the following morning at about four o'clock, when he passed peacefully away. The funeral took place on Thursday, Feb. 19, from his home to the Geiger M.H. for service and burial. Preaching in German by Noah Stauffer from Luke 2: 29, and in English by E.S. Hallman from Rev. 14: 13. He leaves his wife, five sons and two daughters, two daughters having preceded him in death. Owing to the severe cold weather many of his members at Blenheim could not come to the funeral, so they asked Bro. Stauffer to preach a memorial sermon at the Blenheim M.H. on Sunday, Feb. 22. Shantz.- Mrs. Benjamin D. Shantz departed this life on June 4th, 1894, at her home at Wadsworth, Huron Co., Mich., aged 57 years, 5 months, and 22 days. She was a daughter of Christopher and Mary Nahrgang, was born in Wilmot, Waterloo Co., Ontario, married to Benj. D. Shantz, Jan. 30, 1855; lived in Canada 25 years, then moved to Michigan where she resided until her death. She lived in widowhood 5 yrs. 4 mos., and 17 days. To her were born 13 children, of which 8 remain to mourn her departure three of them are married. Twenty-two years ago she was converted to God, and was a devoted follower of the Lamb. She was a true mother to her children and a ""other in Israel.""Her presence will be missed in church and Sunday school as well as at her home. Let prayers be offered for the bereaved. Hamburg Independent.-Mr. Isaac Nahrgang met with an accident, which resulted in his death on Tuesday afternoon. While helping to take down the frame work of a barn on the Green farm, four miles South of this town, a heavy piece of timber fell and struck him, breaking his leg and back, of which injuries he expired a short time after. Deceased was in his 67th year and leaves to mourn his sudden demise a wife and grown up family, who have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.

NAHRGANG - On the 16th of April, 1901, in Wilmot Township, Ontario, Isaac Nahrgang, aged 56 years, 7 months and 10 days. He died from the effects of an accident, from a falling timber while tearing down a barn owned by Moses Cressman. He was knocked to the ground and received internal and external injuries. He lived about one hour after the accident. He was of a cheerful and pleasant disposition and will be greatly missed in his home and neighborhood. He leaves a loving wife and three sons; one daughter passed away a few years ago. Since the meeting held last winter at Blehn's Church he (by the grace of God) led an "overcoming life" and was a "praying man." The remains were laid to rest at the Blenheim burying ground. Services were held by E.S. Hallman from Isa. 38:1 and Solomon Gehman from Matt. 24:44.

Nahrgang.-Josiah Nahrgang was born on June 6, 1859; died June 5, 1926; aged 66 y. 11 m. 30 d. On October 21, 1879 he was married to Esther Reist. To this union were born three girls and two boys, two daughter (Ida and Melinda) having predeceased him. There are left to mourn his sudden departure, his sorrowing companion, four children (Lanson, Vernon, Ralph, and Hilda), seven grandchildren, two brothers (Menno and Henry), two sisters (Mrs. M. C. Cressman and Mrs. Irvin Snider). The funeral was held June 9 from his late home to the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau, for services and adjoining cemetery for burial. Josias Nahrgang

The death of Josias Nahrgang occurred at his home near Shants's Station on Saturday, June 5, in his 67th year. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two sons, Vernon at home and Lanson in Winnipeg, and one daughter, Mrs. Harold Smith of Port Elgin. Two daughters predeceased him. Five grandchildren, in addition to two brothers, Menno and Henry of New Hamburg, and two sisters, Mrs. M. C. Cressman of Kitchener and Mrs. Ervin Snider of Baden also survive. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the home to the Cressman Mennonite church for services, Interment was made In the adjoining cemetery.

Cressman.-Mary Ann, daughter of Mary Shantz and Joseph Nahrgang, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., Nov. 18, 1864; died at her home, Kitchener, Ont., Sept. 10, 1948; aged 83 y. 9 m. 23 d. On June 28, 1887, she was united in marriage to Menno C. Cressman. In 1892 they moved to Berlin (now Kitchener). Surviving are her husband, one daughter (Grace Geraldine-Mrs. M. L. Shuh), one son (Jo-seph Boyd), 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchil-dren, one brother (Menno, New Hamburg), and one sister (Nancy-Mrs. Ervin Snyder, Baden, Ont.). She was a member of the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener for fifty-six years and until the end of her earthly life maintained a radiant witness. She was active in the organization of the local sewing circle in 1908 and in the years following served in various official capacities of the local circle as well as the Ontario district circles. She also served for a number of years on the executive committee of the church-wide organization of the American and Canadian circles, part of the time as president. Funeral services were con-ducted Sept. 14 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, by Merle Shantz, Oscar Burkholder, S. F. Coffman, and John Kehl.

Nancy, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Shantz) Nahrgang, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., May 11, 1871; departed this life March 13, 1952; aged 80 y. 10 m. 2 d. On May 22, 1895, she was united in marriage to Ervin S. Snyder of Baden, Ont. She is survived by her husband, one daughter (Lillian-Mrs. Oliver A. Snyder, Hespeler, Ont.), one son (Delton N., Baden, Ont.), 5 grandchildren, and one brother (Menno S., New Hamburg, Ont.). One son (Orvi), one grandson, 3 sisters, and 4 brothers predeceased her. She accepted Christ as her Saviour during the Stauffer evangelistic services in 1896 and remained a loyal and devoted member of the Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden, Ont., until her death. On March 16 funeral services were conducted by Manasseh Hallman, Merle Shantz, and Curtis Cressman at the home and at the Shantz Mennonite Church. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Death claimed one of the most popular residents of Haysville in the person of Oliver Nahrgang, the rural mail courier, age 64 years. Despite the fact that he not been in the best of health for some time past he did not give up until about two weeks ago and in spite of all that could be done he passed away on Tuesday afternoon. His death came as a shock to his host of friends in this district. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his widow, 2 daughters and 4 sons, Mrs. Hymen Katoff, of Buffalo, N. Y., and Helen at home, Herbert, of St. Louis, Mo., Walter of East Aurora, N. Y. and York and Arthur at home. The funeral will be held on Friday, December 5th. Private service at the house at 1.30 p.m. thence to Geiger's Church for public service and interment in adjoining cemetery.

Funeral for Mrs. Lydia Ann Hunsperger, 87, of Breslau, will be conducted Tuesday, at 2: 30 p.m., at Wanner Mennonite Church. Rev. Merle Shantz, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Wanner Mennonite Cemetery. The body of Mrs. Hunsperger, who died Sunday, at Coutts Pavilion, Freeport, is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, until 11 a.m., Tuesday. Friends may pay respects until the service is held. Born in Wilmot Township, she lived near Preston, for many years. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Nahrgang, she was a member of Wanner Mennonite Church. Her husband, Dilman Hunsperger, died Jan. 20, 1949. Survivors include one son, Enan of Preston; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil (Mary) Gingrich of Breslau, Mrs. H. B. On Sept. 29, 1891, she was united in marriage to Isaiah S. Rosenberger, also of Wilmot township. The union was blessed with 2 sons and 6 daughters. She confessed Christ as her personal Saviour in 1891 and united with the Mennonite faith and remained true to the end. In 1897 her husband was ordained to the ministry and she was a faithful companion to him in his work. Always ready to lend a helping hand and ready at all times to share with her husband the joys and sorrows, the burdens and experiences that come with those who are called to service. In 1908 she with her husband and family moved to Guernsey, Sask., where they lived and labored for the Lord until May of 1936 when they again returned east and settled in Waterloo Co. She leaves her husband, 2 sons (Chester of Meteor, Sask., and David of Guernsey, Sask.), and 5 daughters (Ada, wife of George Hawes; Mary, wife of Herbert Kehl; Leona, wife of Leighton Schmitt, also of Guernsey; and Clista and Alda at home). One daughter (Bessie) predeceased her. There are also 15 grandchildren and 6 sisters. Funeral services on May 12 with Bro. M.H. Roth at the home and Brethren M. Hallman and M.H. Snyder, Mariah, daughter of Aaron and Barbara (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Nov 15, 1872; diedat the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Nov. 12, 1964; aged 91y. 11 m. 28 d. In Dec. 1894, she was married to Cleason Shantz, who died in Dec. 1920. In Sept. 1937, she was married to Abram Snyder, who died in July, 1938. Surviving are 4 children (Bernice-Mrs. Stanley Brubacher, Elroy Shantz, Florence Shantz, and Earl Shantz), 3 sisters (Mrs. Judith Cressman, Mrs. Barbara Good, and Mrs. Rebecca Roth), 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Two sons and 3 sisters preceded her in death. She was a charter member of the first sewing circle in Ontario at the Erb Street Church, Waterloo, where she was a member and where funeral services were held Nov. 14, in charge of J. B. Martin and Milton Schwartzentruber.

Mrs. Abraham Good

Mrs. Abraham Good of RR 2, Petersburg, died Friday at her home. She was 93.

The former Barbara Shantz, she was born at Haysville, April 17, 1875 and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. Aaron Shantz. She was the last surviving member of the family.

She was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church and the Women s Mission Society of the church.

She was predeceased by her husband, in 1963 and her daughter, Irene, in 1955. Surviving are five sons, Cranson and Aaron, both of RR 2, Petersburg, Oliver of New Hamburg, Eden and Laverne, both of Waterloo; two daughters, Viola, at home, and Olive of Kitchener and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Geiger Mennonite Church, Rev. Lester Bauman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

URIAS NAHRGANG

HAYSVILLE, Jan. 14. Urias Nahrgang. 74, who has been a semi-invalid for some time, died early today at his home. He had been seriously ill since Sunday. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Nahrgang, he was born on a farm now owned by Jerbert Bergey adjoining New Hamburg limits and lived in this community all his life. He farmed on property now owned by William Roth until 1918 and then was in the threshing business for 12 years when he retired.

He is survived by his wife, Nettie Battler, one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Coxson of Haysville and three grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held Mon. day at 2:30 o'clock from his home with public services at St. James Anglican Church, Wilmot, at 3 o'clock, Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

New Hamburg, Jan 30 - Abram Nahrgang, 69, died suddenly last evening at his home, Joseph Street. Deceased was born in Wilmot Township on March 12 1872, a son of Mr. And Mrs. Isaac Nahrgang. Ten years ago he lost his left arm in a threshing accident and has lived retired since. He was married three times. His first wife, Miss Coxson, died some years ago and he married Catherine Brenemen, who passed away three years ago. Surviving are his wife, the former Mrs Smith, four sons, Isaac of New Hamburg, Abram of Waterloo, Percy and William of Illinois, one brother, Urias of Haysville, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be held Monday afternoon from the home at one o'clock to the Blenheim Mennonite Church fro services at 2: 30. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Moses Roth will officiate. Remains are at home.

Abram Nahrgang

The death of Mr. Abram Nahrgang occurred very unexpectedly at his home here last Thursday evening, January 29. Though under medical care for a week, he passed away suddenly after the evening meal from a heart attack.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Nahrgang and was born in Wilmot Township on March 12, 1873, being in his 69th year. He spent his early days on the farm and about thirty-five years ago, moved to New Hamburg where he had resided since. Ten years ago he lost his left arm when caught in a threshing machine and had since lived retired.

Mr. Nahrgang was married three times. His first wife, Laura Waldie, died a year after their marriage and he later married Catharine Brenneman, who predeceased him three years ago.

Besides his third wife, formerly Mrs. Smee, he is survived by four sons from the second union, Isaac, New Hamburg, Abram of Waterloo, Percy and William of Moline, Ill., 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home to the Blenheim Mennonite Church for service and interment in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Moses Roth was in charge of the funeral service.

Shantz. Norman, son of the late Daniel and Mary (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., Nov. 3, 1870; departed from this life Dec. 6, 1949; aged 79 y. 1 m. 3 d. In 1893 he was married to Mary Ann Rosenberger. To this union was born one son (Elmon, Kitchener, Ont.). In 1896 he was married to Emma Rosenberger, who survives. Surviving besides his wife and children, are 33 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, one brother (Simeon, New Hamburg, Ont.), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Ephraim Schmit, Baden, Ont.; and Mrs. John McKenzie, Kitchener, Ont.). About fifty years ago he accepted Christ as his Saviour during revivals at the Blenheim congregation. During the years his place was seldom vacant in the service and he sought to support the church to the best of his ability. Funeral services were held at his late home and at the Blenheim Church on Dec. 9 with Moses Bowman and Curtis C. Cressman in charge Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

UZZIAH SHANTZ

A well-known Strasburg farmer for the past 35 years, Uzziah Shantz, 73, died August 18 at his home at Strasburg after a brief illness

Born June 11, 1875, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Shantz. He was a member of Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Soloman (Grace) Bowman, of Floradale, and Mrs. Tobias (Erma) Bowman, of Lexington. and a son Leonard, of Parkway.

Two brothers survive, Norman of Haysville; Simeon, of New Hamburg; and two sisters. Mrs. Ephriam Schmidt, of Baden. and Mrs. Clara Mackenzie. of Kitchener. Five grand-children also survive.

he funeral service was held from his home at Parkway at 2 p.m. Sunday to Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg, for services at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Simon Martin, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

SCHMITT.-On Feb. 13, 1907, Sister Anna Schmitt (Nee Shantz), beloved wife of Ephraim Schmitt, peacefully passed away near Baden, Ont., aged 27 y. 2 m. 15 d. She was ill the last three months and at times hopes of recovery were entertained, but on Feb. 13, she died of septicaemia. She leaves a sorrowing husband and one child. They lived in matrimony three years. She lived an exemplary Christian life and was loved by all who knew her, and we have reason to believe that our loss is her gain. Funeral services were held at the Shantz meeting house on Feb. 16, where she was laid to rest. Services conducted in German from II Cor. 5: 1, by O. M. Cressman and in English from Phil. 1: 21, by J. B. Smith.

Joseph Shantz - Baden

Joseph Shantz, 60, of R.R. 2 New Hamburg , died at his home yesterday afternoon following a lengthy illness. Born in Wilmot Township, a son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Daniel Shantz, he was a well known district farmer. He was a member of the Geiger Mennonite Church. Besides his wife, the former Lydia Snyder, two sons, Vernon of Victoriaburg and Wayne of Baden, and to daughters, Louise and Alice at home, survive. Here brothers, Norman and Simeon of Haysville and Uzziah of Strasburg and two sisters, Mrs. Ephraim Schmidt and Mrs. John McKenzie of Baden and one grandchild also survive. A sister Annie, died 34 years ago. The remains will be held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 7 o'clock tonight when removal will be made to the residence near Baden until 1: 30 p.m. Monday. The funeral with Rev. Moses Roth officiating will be held at the Geiger Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Joseph Shantz

A lifelong and well known resident of Wilmot Township, Mr. Joseph Shantz, passed away at his home east of Wilmot Centre on Friday, May 15, aged 60 years. He had been ill for some time and two months ago sold his farm, stock and implements, owing to poor health.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Shantz, pioneer residents of the district. He was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home to Geiger Mennonite Church for service, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Moses Roth conducted the funeral service, which was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

Joseph, son of the late Daniel and Mary (Nahrgang) Shantz, was born in Wilmot Twp., on Dec. 30, 1881, and lived in the said township his entire lifetime. He passed away at his home near Baden, Ont., on May 15, 1942; aged 60 y. 4 m. 15 d. Bro. Shantz had been in failing health for some time, but was not confined to the house until the last several weeks before his death. He was a faithful member of the Geiger Mennonite congregation near Baden for the past 45 years. His place at church was seldom vacant. During his last illness he expressed his desire to go Home. On Feb. 8, 1911, he was married to Lydia Snider who survives him with four children: Vernon of Petersburg, Wayne of Baden, and Louise and Alice, at home. There also remain: 1 granddaughter, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters: Norman and Simeon of Haysville, Uzziah of Strasburg, Mrs. Ephraim Schmitt and Mrs. John McKenzie of Baden. One sister, Annie, predeceased him 34 years ago. Funeral services were held at the home by Bro. M. Hallman and then at the Geiger Mennonite Church, where the Bros. C. C. Culp of Brethren, Mich., and M. H. Roth spoke from the texts found in John 14:1-7 and Matt. 5:12a. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Funeral of Mrs. Doerr

The funeral of Mrs. Elmer B. Doerr took place Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from her late residence to Trinity Methodist Church, where services were conducted by the Rev. S. E. Marshall. The pastor delivered an impressive sermon from the text 1 Cor. 15: 56,57. "The sting of death, and the victory of death" after which a duet was sung by Mr. O. A. Keffer and Mr. Green entitled "Face to Face" this being the last hymn deceased had sung. A large concourse of sorrowing friends was present. Six postmen of the city delivery of which Mr. Doerr is a valued member, acted as pall-bearers. Internment took place in East End cemetery.

Heritage Awards presented to diverse group: Honouring a time of memories-
Alice Koch has been involved in many and varied activities during herlife - education, family, church, community and literary.


She was born Feb. 1, 1913, the d/o Menno and Amelia (Bergey) Nahrgang, and recently celebrated her 92nd birthday at her home on the farm on Haysville Road where she was born.

She attended Haysville Public School, SS No. 6 Wilmot, and passed her Entrance examinations at the age of 12, having completed the eight grades in 6 yrs. Her mother thought she was too young to attend high school, so kept her home for a year. For 3 yrs, starting in 1926, she attended New Hamburg Continuation School. Her fourth and last year she attended KW Collegiate, Kitchener and completed the required form five upper schoolclasses (Gr. 13) and middle school physics. Getting to the Collegiate meant walking the two miles to the train station, commuting on the regular passenger train with students from Shakespeare, New Hamburg and Baden. To return in the afternoon, she had to meet the train at 4 o'clock and ride the freight train with an old style passenger car. This was often a time-consuming ride since freight cars often had to be left atstops along the way.

Alice began attending Stratford Normal School in Sept. 1930 to prepare for a teaching career, her long time dream. (Her mother and grandfather,David Bergey had been teachers). She started teaching in 1931, first at Rosebank, SS8 Wilmot, for one year, and then for 8 yrs at Clachan, SS No.3 North Easthope. Both schools were one-room classrooms with 8 grades,and large enrollments varying from 40-50 pupils - no small challenge for a beginning teacher.

Family responsibilities would occupy the next several decades. On Aug.14, 1940 she married Lester Koch of Conestoga, a partner in Koch Brothers Butchers, in St. Jacobs and later Kitchener. On Dec. 31, 1942 they moved from the city house to the farm of her father. Life on the farm was busier than in the city, with a whole house, garden, lawn, flower beds,field work and chores. By 1956 there were 10 children as well as her father to manage (he lived until 1962 and died at the age of 95).

The education of her family was always a priority. She saw to it that each child was keeping up in school, and encouraged them to go on. It is a tribute to her that all ten of her children graduated from Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School. Most of them have pursued post-secondary education, and some graduate degrees. They are involved in education, nursing, ministry, publishing, silo-building and other agri-business.

By the fall of 1962, all the children were attending school in public, high and university. This gave Alice time to devote to church andcommunity interests. She now was able to teach an adult Sunday School class at Biehn Mennonite church, which she continued to do until she was almost 90 yrs old, help with Summer Bible School at Blenheim Church, and attend sewing circle. She served on the Women's Missionary and Service Commission Executive Committee, including several years as president.Along with Lester she attended Haysville Home and School meetings, and later became involved with the KW Home and School organization, serving several years as president. With changes in education, Haysville Public School was closed and the building purchased by the community.

In April 1976, she began working at 50 Kent Ave., Kitchener, two days a week as supervisor of the Mennonite Cutting Room. It stocked fabrics for quilts and crafts for the MCC Relief Sale held annually in New Hamburg,and various items needed for MCC projects. She was an employee until 1996 and then a volunteer doing the same work as before, until she retired in Oct. 2001.
Piecing tops from an assortment of patches and quilting is a source of challenge and satisfaction that she still enjoys. Many have been given to the Mennonite Relief Sale. She also donated items to Conrad GrebelArchives and to the Archives at Castle Kilbride.

Alice also assisted in assembling family trees for her family. Her familly and friends appreciate her contribution to their lives. In 2002 she published for their benefit, a 75 page book, 'A Time for Memories'."

Snyder (1977), mother of John W. and his wife Lois of RR 21, Cambridge, Robert O. and his wife Beth of Kitchener and James C. predeceased and his wife Mary Ruth of New Jersey; grandmother of John, Patricia, Julia, Olivia, Emily, Jay, Bryan and Kimberley. Mrs. Snyder, was predeceased by a brother, Delton in 1982 and is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Snyder of Baden. Mrs. Snyder, was born in Wilmot township, the daughter of the late Ervin Snyder and the former Nancy Nahrgang. She was a member of the Wanner Mennonite Church and a strong supporter of many of the church's institutions and programs. Mrs. Snyder was especially interested in the Women's Missionary and Service Auxiliary, was an active church and community historian and a life member of the Maple Grove Women's Institute. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, Oct. 23, from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday afternoon, from 2: 30, until time of service in Wanner Mennonite Church at 4 p.m. Interment Wanner Mennonite cemetery.

Baden Man Dies 3 Days After Crash

STRATFORD - A third person has died as a result of injuries in a two-car collision on Highway 7 and 8, three miles south of Stratford, Tuesday. Delton N. Snyder, 58 of Baden, driver of one of the cars died in Stratford General Hospital early today. Rev. George Lamont of Knox Presbyterian Church, Mitchell, and his wife, Kathleen Ruth, 47, were instantly killed. Mr. Snyder had been reported in good condition following the accident. Born March 6, 1903 in Wilmot Township, he was the proprietor of Snyder Transport Limited and a director of Toronto Milk Transporters.

He was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden, and vice-president of the Baden Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his wife, the former Beatrice Miller, whom he married in Kitchener in 1927, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Sylvester (Betty) Yantzi and Mrs. Vernice (Myrtle) Snyder, both of Baden; his father, Ervin, of Hespeler; one sister, Mrs. Oliver A. Snyder, of Hespeler, and seven grand-children. A son Donald Bruce, predeceased him in 1947. The body is resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 10 a.m. Monday when it will be removed to Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden, where Rev. Leslie Witmer will conduct the service at 2: 30 p.m. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Armond R. Nahrgang

LEWISBURG - Armond R. Nahrgang. 76, of 438 Pheasant Ridge Road, was dead on arrival Wednesday in the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He was stricken at Bucknell University Library, Lewisburg.

He was born in Wilmot Township. Ontario, Canada, Aug. 3, 1902, a son of the late Henry and Mary Heintz Nahrgang. He was married to the former Anne Horoschak, who survives.

Mr. Nahrgang was employed as an electrical engineer by the Western Electric Company.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one sister, Miss Vera Nahrgang of Owensound, Ontario, and one brother, Harry Nahrgang of Paisley, Ontario. A son, Ross Nahrgang, died in 1973.

A private funeral will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Beloved husband of Della (nee Gabel) and father of Janet (Mrs. Darryl Hilliard) of Kincardine and Helen (Mrs. Ken Smiley) of Kitchener. Also surviving is one sister, Vera Nahrgang of New Hamburg and four grandchildren, Richard Norman, Brian Norman, John Craig and Donna Diebel. He was predeceased by two brothers, Armand and Russell.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 25, in the chapel of the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, Ont. at 3:30 p.m., with Rev. Dr. James A. Sitler officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Reception to follow in the Ratz- Bechtel Family Centre.

"Zelma Baer left footprints of discipline and hope wherever she went. She learned or inherited her authority and discipline from her father and her mothering and housekeeping abilities from her mother. 'She thought clearly and acted wisely, although we did not always recognize it at the time', commented her sister. Her life was one of practical ministry and selfless caring.

THE PRACTICAL NURSE

Zelma was born on June 6, 1905 to Ephraim and Lovina (Nahrgang) Baer on their farm just west of the hamlet of Haysville. Zelma's childhood predated modern conveniences, the world wars, and the Depression. Zelma learned to work, but she also had the physique. She was a well-built,strong woman, and according to a neighbour and friend, always 'carried herself regally'.

As the oldest in a large family, Zelma learned 'practical nursing' at an early age. Her brothers and sisters were born at home. In a large familycommunicable diseases made their rounds. The family was quarantined most of one winter because several children contracted scarlet fever one after another.

The Baer family was deeply religious. There was daily family worship, and they always went to church - and that was on time. On one occasion Father packed his family into the sleigh with heated bricks and blankets, and when they arrived at church, found the service had been cancelled due to impassable roads! It was the Biehn Mennonite Church (now Nith Valley) where the Baers attended.

The Baers entertained missionaries and Bible teachers in the home, giving the children exposure to people and the world beyond their home and community. It is from these experiences that Zelma may have aspired tobecome a doctor. At age 25, she left for Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonsburg, Virginia. Her schooling in Virginia was limited to a year or two, and the goal to become a doctor was abandoned.

Zelma came back to Ontario and embarked on a career of providing nursing care in the home. During the early years she served primarily on confinement cases. At that time most babies were born at home. Doctors were plentiful enough that practicing midwives had been put out of business - especially in Zelma's community - but people still engaged the services of a practical nurse. Called at the onset of labour, Zelma would aid in the decision as to when to call the doctor. If, for any reason,the doctor did not arrive on time, Zelma was there to take care of the delivery. Several family members and friends attest to the fact that Zelma delivered their babies.

Those who engaged Zelma as their 'nurse' got a housekeeper, additional parent, and manager in the bargain. If the baby was a firstborn, she shared the couple's excitement. If a young child was being replaced by a new baby, Zelma took this child to bed with her, giving both physical and emotional comfort.

If necessary, Zelma managed the household. A member of the Garber family commented on Zelma's roll in their home: 'When it was time for chores,she expected the cows to be in from the field so she could help with the milking. If the cows weren't in on time, there might be a familyconference at supper, and one of us children would have to squirm. At times like this, Zelma knew enough to be quiet and let the real parents supply the discipline. But if the parents were not there, Zelma was well able to practice fair and firm control....'

Whent he doctors finally convinced their clients to go to the hospital to have their babies, Zelma turned to the care of the elderly.

When working with young families, Zelma frequently ran into uncooperative youngsters, but she was able to avoid a great deal of fuss with her authoritative manner and quick movements. The elderly were also responsive to her firm, although kind, directions. All ages loved her forher good-natured humour and her spontaneous laughter.

Zelma did not do as much Sunday school and Bible school teaching as manysingle women did, because she could not as easily schedule her work to include such assignments. Sewing circle was more or less in the same category. While she had her permanent residence at Baden with several unmarried sisters, Zelma did serve as president of one of the sewing circle groups and Martha as secretary. They gathered used clothing for relief in their garage. This frequently needed washing, and when the clothes line was full of men's pants, these women had some explaining to do! Zelma was an excellent seamstress. She made her own clothes, and also sewed for the families she worked for when the need required. She could have made a more substantial contribution to the sewing circle if time had permitted.

Although Zelma was devoted to the Mennonite Church, she happily attended whatever church was nearby - no matter what denomination. One woman for whom Zelma worked gives the following tribute: 'I will always remember the unselfish devotion she gave to every task, however small, or humble. She was the perfect example of a Christian woman, and I learned a lot from her.'

After a short illness, Zelma died on Nov. 6, 1978 at the Maples Nursing Home in Tavistock, and is buried in the Nith Valley Mennonite Cemetery. She lives on in the memories of the many persons touched by her ministryof love and caring."

He was a member of Haysville Senior Citizens, a member of Wilmot Horticultural Society; Oscar had been an agent for Pride Corn for over 25 years and a representative of Mennonite Aid Union. Oscar enjoyed woodworking, gardening, travelling, reading and crafts as his hobbies.

Beloved husband of Velina Martin whom he married November 19, 1941 and who predeceased him October 21, 1991. Lovingly remembered by one daughter, Esther and her husband Allan Etchells and their children, Stephanie and Megan; one son, Abner Baer and his daughter, Kimberly and her husband Chris Perkins and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Perkins, all of Waterloo and Kitchener. Dear brother of Martin and his wife Mabel of Kitchener, Viola (Mrs. Rod McKenzie) of Cambridge and Martha Baer of New Hamburg. Stanley B. Nahrgang

The death took place at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital last Friday of Stanley B. Nahrgang in his 17th year. The deceased had been suffering with a weak heart for several months and was taken to the hospital about a week prior to his death. He was a son of Mr. Allan Nahrgang and the late Mrs. Nahrgang, of Kitchener, but since the death of his mother about five years ago had been staying with his father's cousin, Mr. Menno Nahrgang, near Haysville. Besides his father he is survived by two brothers, Wallace and Clarence, at home in Kitchener and one sister, Gladys, with Mr. and Mrs. Menno Nahrgang. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon to the First Mennonite Church and Cemetery in Kitchener. The deceased was a youth of exemplary qualities and his untimely death is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bowman, he was a member of Geiger Mennonite Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Selinda Cressman; two sons. Stanley of RR 2. Petersburg and Delton of RR 2. New Hamburg; two daughters. Mary of Kitchener and Anna of Toronto: one brother. Weston of Kitchener, one sister, Annie of Kitchener and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his twin hrother and a sister.

Funeral service was held at the Geiger Mennonite Church on Wednesday

Burial was held in the church cemetery.

TOBIAS BOWMAN

Tobias Bowman, Kitchener died January 23 at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief Illness. He was 75.

Bom in Wilmot Township Dec. 6, 1892, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bowman. He has been a Twin City resident for the past 44 years, he was a member of First Mennonlte Church and had been employed by the Kitchener Coal Co. Ltd. for 40 years before his retirement in 1962.

Surviving are his wife, the former Sybilla Schweitzer, whom he married in Kitchener Dec. 19, 1917; one son, Robert G. of Kitchener; one daughter, Dorothy, also of Kitchener; two brothers, a twin, Aaron, and Weston, both of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Minerva Rosenherger of Nipiwan, Sask., and Annie of Kitchener, and two grandchildren.

The service was held at First Mennonite Church Kitchener, Thursday afternoon. Rev. Robert N. Johnson, minister of the church, and Rev. F.W. Zinck, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, officiated. Temporary entombment was made in Woodland mausoleum, and burial will follow in First Mennonite Cemetery.

Milford Cressman of RR 1, Plattsville, died Sunday at his home at the age of 74.

He was born July 20, 1893, on the farm on which he resided all his life.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abram Cressman. he is survived by a brother. Clarence, and sister. Miss Barbara Cressman, both of RR l, Plattsville and two nieces and one nephew.

He died Oct. 14, 1918; aged 21 y. 26 d. His death was due to influenza, and after a relapse, developed into pneumonia. May the Lord console the family in their bereavement. Due to influenza, brief services were conducted at the home by Bro. Noah Stauffer. Buried at the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery.

Florence was a dedicated lifelong member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church and gave much of her time and energy to the service of her Lord in the Church that she loved. Good, -- Irene, daughter of Abraham and Barbara (Shantz) Good, was born March 14, 1908 near Baden, Ont.; passed away at the K-W Hospital on Oct. 14, 1955, after a lengthy illness; aged 47 y. 7 m. She accepted Christ as her Saviour in her youth and united with the Geiger Mennonite Church, being a faithful member until death. Most her life was spent in performing the ordinary duties of life, and she will long be remembered by her many kindnesses. For a number of years she served as matron of Rockway Mennonite School. She is survived by her parents, two sisters (Viola, Toronto; Olive, Kitchener), and 5 brothers (Cranson, and Aaron of Peterburg; Oliver of Preston; Eden and Lavern of Waterloo), and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Oct. 16 at the Geiger Mennonite Church in charge of C. C. Cressman and M. H. Roth. Bro. Roth spoke on the text, Ps. 17: 16, which was selected by Sister Good before her passing. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Good, Eden S. - Passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at Pinehaven Nursing Home, in Waterloo, on Tuesday, August 12, 2003, in his 88th year.

Beloved husband of Doris (Bearinger) whom he married September 16, 1950. Loving father of David and Cathy of Kitchener and Stuart of Hanover. Lovingly remembered by grandsons, Bradley and Thomas. Eden was born in Wilmot township, son of the late Abraham and Barbara (Shantz) Good. Predeceased by brother and their wives Cranson and Violet Good, Aaron and Mary Good, Laverne and Margaret Good; sisters Viola, Olive and Irene Good and sister-in-law June Feick.
As a young man, Eden worked as a farm hand at area farms. Following this, he worked a various wood working companies as a cabinet maker for more than 30 years. In his spare time, gardening and wood carving were his hobbies. Eden was a faithful member at Erb Street Mennonite Church, where he also served as church and cemetery grounds keeper.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Eden with his family at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South in Waterloo from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held at Erb Street Mennonite Church on Friday, August 15, 2003, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Allan Rudy Froese officiating. Interment to follow in Erb Street Mennonite Cemetery.

Delton Coxson Dies in 40th Year.

There passed away on Monday afternoon after a year's illness, Delton Coxson, in his fortieth year. The deceased was born near New Hamburg a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John S. Coxson, his father having predeceased him on the same date eleven years ago. For some, years the late Mr. Coxson ran a threshing outfit but the past several years he farmed two miles south of Haysville.

He is survived by his widow (nee Bessie Irene Nahrgang) one daughter Kathaleen, two sons, Donald and Kenneth all at home, his step-mother, Mrs. J. S. Coxson of Waterloo, one step-brother, William of Waterloo and one step-sister, Mrs. J. Lautenschlager of Kitchener.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon with private services at the house and a public service at St. James Anglican Church, Huron Road. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Shantz was a farmer for many years. Latterly he was employed with the University of Waterloo before retirement. He was also very active and enjoyed many of the events at Fairview Mennonite Home. Leonard was a member of Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship Church.

Beloved husband of Idella (Schmidt); loving father of Keith, Howard and his wife Barbara, Murray and his wife Gwen, all of Toronto, Dale and his wife Beverly of Kitchener; brother of Grace and her husband Solomen Bowman of Elmira, Erma and her husband Tobias Bowman of Kitchener. He enjoyed meeting and talking to people especially those he crossed paths with while selling Watkins products from his home and at the Waterloo Farmers Market. As a member of the Victoria School Senior Citizens Centre he enjoyed shuffleboard and lawn bowling. Having grown up on a farm, Elroy loved gardening and puttering in his yard and tool shed. Peacefully, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at her residence, Nithview Home, New Hamburg.

Irene and Orton had farmed at RR 2, New Hamburg and resided on Riverside Drive.

Irene was born 83 years ago in Wilmot township and was the daughter of the late Simon Shantz and the former Celina Cressman.

Irene was a lifelong member of Wilmot Mennonite Church, RR 2, Baden, where she had been an active participant of the WMSC,

Irene enjoyed throughout her lifetime quilting, gardening, sharing her love of music with others, and being a host family for 14 international MCC trainees.

Her greatest joy was being with her family.

Beloved wife of Orton Koch with whom she celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Sadly missed by Doreen (Jim) Houston of Penticton, B.C. and their children Rob (Monica), Tom, Dorothy; Enid (Glenn) Slabaugh of Goshen, Ind. and their children Sonya (Larry) and son Adam, Dana; Lloyd (Erla) of Wingham and their children Angela, Cindy, Jamie; Phyllis (Barry) Bishop of Waterloo and their children David, Danny, Jonathan; Rhoda (Dale) Gingerich of Tavistock and their children Greg and Cheri.

The memorial service to celebrate Mary's life and faith will be held at Breslau Mennonite Church on Monday, December 15, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Darrel Toews presiding. Cremation has taken place. A private interment in the church cemetery will precede the memorial service. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family in the church fellowship hall for refreshments and a time to visit. Snyder. Lula Shantz was born July 5, 1901; died Jan. 29, 1938; aged 36 y. 6 m. 24 d. In September, 1932, she was united in marriage to Roy Snyder. There remain to mourn her departure her husband, 3 stepchildren (Adeline, Lorne, and Lucinda), also her parents (Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Shantz) and 3 sisters (Cecilia, Corella, and Catharine, Mrs. Clayton Weber). One sister predeceased her five years ago. At the age of 14 she accepted her Saviour and united with the Church, to which she remained faithful until death. During her illness (which covered several years) she suffered much weakness, but she bore it patiently with the strength she had. Her last illness brought to her a desire to leave this world of suffering and exchange it for a heavenly home, for which she declared herself prepared. Funeral service was conducted by Brethren M. Hallman and H. W. Stevanus. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Bloomingdale, Ont.

Miss Reta Shantz

Many friends were sorry to learn of the death of Miss Reta Shantz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah N. Shantz, of near Wilmot Centre, who passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, early last Thursday morning, January 12th, in her 25th year. She was taken ill about three months ago and as her condition did not improve she was taken to the hospital but all medical skill and nursing was of no avail.

She is mourned by her parents and four sisters, Mrs. Roy Snyder, of Bloomingdale, and Misses Celia, Corella and Catherine, all at home, besides a large circle of other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon from the home of her parents to Latchar's Mennonite Church at Mannheim and was very largely attended. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.
