    ___________________________

    Death of Mr. Thomas Marshall
    - The death of this well known and most respected gentleman became known in Galt early Saturday afternoon last, occasioning a general feeling of regret in the wide circle of his friends and acquaintances.

It is known that Mr. Marshall has been ailing for some months. When last he took his seat as Clerk of North Dumfries Council, it was seen that he did not look robust, still there was nothing in his appearance or manner to indicate that was the last time he would fill his accustomed position there. Shortly after his illness was announced and from then as the days went by, reports became more serious, until it was hopeless to look for any other than the result we announce with so much regret. About three years ago, by a simple accident in his wagon, Mr. Marshall received a severe fall on the back of his head which caused a slight concussion of the brain, and from that time, while not apparent to many, his intimate friends saw a change and that he never was the same man again. At the time of his death he was in his 71st year Mr. Marshall entered into public life when comparatively a young man. He was assessor of the Township first, we think, then collector, subsequently Councilor, Reeve and warden, and finally, after the death of the late Thomas Ballingal, he was appointed Clerk and Treasurer, which offices he held at the time of his death. From the establishment of the North Dumfries and South Waterloo Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company, until about three years ago, he was its Secretary and Treasurer, and it is only needless reiteration to those who knew him, when we say that to every office he brought the same serenity of action, the same uprightness and honor, and that every duty he undertook was discharged faithfully and honestly. He possessed a retentive memory which held tenaciously the details of municipal and other business life, which he was called on to discharge, and few were a better authority upon assessment, school or municipal law then he. Possessed of a serenity of mind, which was proof against annoyances, his duties were to him a pleasure, and in all his intercourse with the public he left behind him only friends. And he was tried severely. Death visited his family so often and took away, one after the other, his daughters, when little more than women, and his wife, yet he went on in the even tenor of his way, submitting quietly and discharging his duties as a humble Christian without repining or giving was to sorrows which would have broken the heart of most men.

Mr. Marshall leaves but one son and daughter and of his brothers only Mr. Peter Marshall, of South Dumfries, and Mr. Anthony Marshall, of Blenheim, survive. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon last, and no better testimonial to the estimation in which the deceased gentleman was held could have been shown than the long line of carriages filled with old friends which attended the remains to their last resting place in Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Successively conducted by Thomas Stewart, Gaven Hume & Son. and Scott Bros., it was leased by the latter firm to the Marshalls - Robt., and Anthony - about two years ago. The mill has been refitted and modernized and is now run to the full capacity, 125 barrels per day, the power used being a combination of steam and water. The brands produced by the Marshall Milling Company are known as the "Snow Flake" and "Daisy" and find favor both at home and abroad, many customers living in the Maritime Provinces.

    ________________

Lamentable Death of Mr. Ralph Marshall, of North Dumfries

On Monday last the people of Galt were startled to hear a rumour spreading that a Mr. Marshall, of North Dumfries, had been killed that morning in some manner. This caused grave anxiety as there are so many of that name in the Township who have hosts of friends in the town. For a short time the rumour could not be verified, but shortly after noon it became certain that one of our oldest and best known residents, Mr. Ralph Marshall, had been hurriedly called away by being instantly killed by a tree falling on him.

Inquiry afterwards elicited the following facts: - About ten o'clock in the forenoon, Mr. John Wells and Mr. Marshall were engaged sawing down a large tree. They had arranged their cuts so as to have the tree fall to the west, and as it did not start as soon as they anticipated, they had put in a wedge to help to throw it. As it started to fall, Mr. Wells stepped a few yards out from the butt, as he walked away noticing Mr. Marshall, immediately behind him, crossing also out of the way. Contrary to their expectations, the tree partly swung round "across the cut," as choppers call it, and in falling, struck in the crutch of a green Beech, which caused the butt to slew round a little and also to slide back about twenty feet. When Mr. Wells turned after the tree had fallen, he was surprised at not seeing his companion, and running back was horrified to see Mr. Marshall lying on his back on the ground with the trunk of the tree across his bowels. Speaking to him and trying to release him, he found that he was dead, having been apparently instantly killed, for he made no outcry at any time or breathed or moved after being found. Being unable to release him, Mr. Wells went at once to Mr. James Brown's for assistance, which he secured. To release the body the log had to be cut through, which was done, the corpse being carried to Mr. Wells' residence.

Mr. Wells cannot account for the accident, nor, although so close, did he see anything of it. The tree was falling as his back was turned, and the last he saw of Mr. Marshall, was as he first started away from the tree, when deceased appeared slightly crossing behind him, also walking away. How he was struck, he cannot say, but he is strongly of opinion that he was killed before the tree fell on him, as from the position of the body and the fact that the tree did not press so heavily on him as to kill him instantly, he is of opinion that when he reached him life would not have been utterly extinct. Mr. Marshall had in his upper vest pocket a watch, which was not stopped, and in his trowsers pockets a pipe and a pair of spectacles, neither of which were broken. Of external bruises there are none apparent, as from any severe blow.

Mr. Ralph Marshall was the youngest of the family, we believe, but even then had passed his 63rd year. He was married, but had been for years a widower, his family consisting of Mr. Robt. Marshall, miller, of Waterloo; Mr. Thos. Marshall, of Peteboro' and Mrs. John Shiell, of North Dumfries. Of his brothers, all men known throughout this section most intimately and respected wherever known, there are living, Mr. Thos. Marshall, for many years Township Clerk and Secretary of the North Dumfries Insurance Co.; Mr. Anthony Marshall, for many years a Director of the same Company, and Mr. Peter Marshall, also if we mistake not having held the same position and well-known throughout the county for his active and hearty support of our Sabbath Schools and Association. There are also two sisters living, viz.: - Mrs. George Sheard, of North Dumfries, and Mrs. Nichol, of Turnberry. The family were all born in Scotland, coming with their parents to this country about 1832, if we mistake not.

The funeral took place yesterday (Thursday) from the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. John Shiell, to the Cedar Creek Cemetery, and was attended by a very large concourse of the residents of this section, friends of the deceased and family coming long distances to testify their respect.

    Death Of Stephen Marshall

One of Ayr's Oldest and Most Esteemed Residents Passes in His 83rd Year

One of the oldest and most esteemed residents of our village passed away at 11 o'clock Tuesday evening in the person of Stephen Marshall, in his 83rd year. Mr. Marshall had been in failing health for several months, but took to his bed only two weeks ago. He was born on the Marshall homestead, 13th concession of Blenheim, now owned by his son, William, being the son of Anthony Marshall and Isabel Hall, who were pioneer settlers from Scotland. After his marriage he farmed in South Dumfries for several years and then removed to the Kingsborough farm, Townline, where he spent ten years. The family then went back to the home farm, 13th of Blenheim, where the next twenty years were spent. They came to Ayr 21 years ago and took up residence on Grey street. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1933. Mr. Marshall was a member of the former Stanley Street Church and after union, was a valued member of Knox United congregation, where he served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He was one of the oldest members of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., and a member of the Ayr Cemetery Company Board. In politics, he was a staunch Liberal. While engaged in farming, he was for many years a director of Drumbo Fair Agricultural Society and also served on the Perry's Corners school board. Mr. Marshall was widely known throughout this section and was much respected as a good friend and neighbor. Besides his sorrowing wife, whose maiden name was Jennie Scott, he is survived by the following children: J. A. Marshall, Calgary Wm. S. Marshall, Blenheim; Mrs. Robert Gladstone, North Dumfries; Lovett Marshall, Yorkton, Sask., and Mrs. Harold Foote, Toronto. His oldest son, Roy, died in Calgary four years ago, while another son, Howard, of the 111th Batt., was killed overseas in 1918. One sister, Margaret Marshall, of Galt, also survives. The funeral will take place from his late residence to Ayr Cemetery on Friday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock.

Todd's Milling Co., comprising the firm of Thomas Todd & Son and John Scott, off Hawthorn Street - Among the most prominent manufacturing industries in Galt must be mentioned the Todd Milling Co., which is one of the largest concerns in this line in this section of the county. They have recently purchased the old Stockwell Mills, which had been lying idle for several years; and to meet the more modern requirements of the present day, they entirely overhauled the building, and took out all the old machinery and runs of stone, and entirely refitted it, giving the contract for the work to the celebrated flour mill builders, Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch, of this town, the interior arrangements being made after plans by the foreman, Mr. J.E. Wilson, which are complete in every particular. The building occupied is a substantially-built structure of stone, five stories in height, with basement, engine and boiler house; also a large store house for grain, fitted up with nine large hopper bins, thus being enabled to keep each grade separate. There is an automatic weigher for weighing the grain before passing into the rolls. In the basement of the mill is located the main line of shafting, with pulleys, two sets of large wheat brush machines, one Galt improved separator, one Galt improved cockle machine, one Galt improved smutter; also elevators for handling screenings and wheat. On the first floor are four runs of stones, twenty-four pairs of Galt improved rolls, three Galt improved flour packers and three weight scales. On the second floor are one improved centrifugal bolt, two middlings dusters and five purifiers; also bins for middlings and flour. The third floor contains four purifiers, four centrifugal bolts, one Galt improved middlings duster and bins. On the fourth floor are four Wilson's patent dust collectors and three four-reel bolts. On the fifth floor are two two-reel bolt chests, one single-reel chest, and the elevator tops, with dust protectors on each. The mill was fitted up under the direction of the foreman, Mr. Wilson who has several patents on the machines for the prevention of fire by friction, etc. The capacity of the mill is 350 barrels per day. The head miller is Mr. Anthony Marshall, who was lately in charge of a leading flour mill in Blenheim, Ont., and is a gentleman well qualified for the position in every respect, having had an extended experience of many years. The proprietors, Thomas Todd & Son and John Scott, are gentlemen of unquestioned business ability, push and enterprise, and are highly and justly esteemed in the community. Messrs. Todd & Son will continue to carry on their general produce and commission business, in the exportation of flour, grain and provisions, as heretofore.

    The Marshall Milling Company.

For years the industry now operated by the Marshall Milling Company was known in this section as the Dumfries Mill.

    Demise of Peter Marshall
    - In the death of Mr. Peter Marshall, which unlooked for event occurred early Monday morning at his home, Northumberland St., Ayr, the community loses another life-long, well-known and highly esteemed citizen. The deceased, who was in his 51st year, had been ill for some time, and had retired from his occupation as a farmer, but he had been improving in health up to a few days before his death, so that his sudden passing came as a shock to the community. He was born in the adjoining township of Blenheim, and lived there all his life until coming to Ayr last spring. Like many of the successful tillers of the soil in this section, Mr. Marshall adhered closely to his calling, seldom taking much interest in political or municipal affairs. He, however, identified himself with the Reform party, and in religion was a Presbyterian - a member of Stanley-St. Church and an ex-office bearer. His partner in life, whose maiden name was Maggie Oliver, survives, together with five children - three sons and two daughters, namely, Anthony, Leslie, Chester, Margaret and Belle, all of whom are at home. Three brothers and three sisters also survive. They are - Stephen, Blenheim; Anthony, Calgary; Ralph, Winnipeg; Maggie, Ayr; Mrs. E. Deans, Paris, and Mrs. Geo. Dickie, London. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, when the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Ayr cemetery by a large number of friends and relatives. The services were conducted by Deceased's pastor, Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Thos. Hall, Cameron Marshall, W. A. Ramsay, T. O. Scott, Wm. Manson and George Gourlay (Paris). Mr. Marshall was an Oddfellow and the members of the Order here attended the obsequies in a body. The cortege was the largest ween in Ayr in some time.

Passing of Cameron Marshall - Not only on the battlefield is Death rampant. It invades the peaceable home of the non-combatant with equal certainty and solemnity. On Tuesday evening Mr. Cameron Marshall was summoned by the Grim Monster, the spirit fleeing its casket of clay at 10:30 o'clock. Mr. Marshall had been ill a little over a year, but was up and about until a couple of weeks before the end came. Being of a quiet and unassuming disposition, he made many staunch friends who will regret his demise. He was born on the farm on which he died, residing there continuously for a period of nearly 55 years. ln religion, he was Presbyterian, a trustee in Knox United Church, and in politics a Reformer; but above and beyond this he was a good neighbor and a worthy citizen of the Empire. Mr. Marshall married about 29 years ago, his bride being Miss Bella Deans, who, together with two sons and two daughters, survives. The family comprises Thos. A., Jas. G., Euphemia and Bessie. The funeral will take place from the family residence, Lot 85, Con. 9, North Dumfries, on Friday afternoon to the Ayr cemetery.
