    Notes:

    SAD DEATH OF D. L. A. McKAY

Promising Career Cut off in Early Manhood by the Grim Reaper

A promising career was cut short at 1.30 o'clock, on Monday morning, the Grim Reaper summoned Donald Lucius Arnold McKay, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. McKay at their home 149 Queen street Berlin. The deceased who was of a strong and robust constitution, had been in poor health since the beginning of the year and was in the Kingston Hospital for between seven and eight weeks, suffering from what was supposed to be an attack of typhoid fever. However, not showing signs of convalescence, he was removed to his home and after being here a few days, he was compelled to take to his bed. Notwithstanding with the best medical attention he showed no signs of improvement, the physicians diagnosing the case as one of tubercular meningitis and little hope was held out for his recovery. He was unconscious since last Tuesday and his end was peaceful. The late Donald L. A. McKay, was born on his father's farm near Bloomingdale in 1887 and after attending the public school at Bloomingdale, he entered the Berlin High School in 1902, and matriculated in 1905. In that year he won a scholarship of $115 in English and History, from Queens University, heading the whole province. In his first year at the University he took first class honors in all his classes and repeated his record last year. This year he was taking the Honor course in English and Political Science, having the practice of law in view and no doubt would have taken a high stand. He was very popular in the Collegiate, both with scholars and teachers and took an active part in the Literary Society, as well at in athletics, playing half back on the football team. When he went to the University he played Association football and later played with the Second and lastly with the Senior Rugby Club. His popularity and manly character was shown by his election to one of the highest offices of Queen's University, namely the President of the Y. M.C.A., a sad feature of this was that he was then lying seriously ill at the College Hospital, but none of his classmates thought that there was anything fatal in his illness. That the deceased was exceedingly popular was shown by the devotion and self-sacrifice of a number of his old classmates who attended at his bedside day and night during his trying illness, in a vain effort to nurse their former comrade back to health. He was well known throughout the town and during the past few weeks, many were the anxious enquiries made as to his condition. His untimely demise will be a severe blow to his bereaved parents and family, who will have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral took place from the residence 149 Queen street, south, on Wednesday, May 13, at 1 p. m., where a short service was held, after which the remains were taken to the Methodist cemetery, at Winterbourne for interment.
