    The Late Mrs. John Warnock

In announcing the death last week of Mrs. John Warnock, we had not time to give more than a brief notice of her long and useful life. Coming to this country from Scotland in 1832 with her husband and young family, they arrived in the at that time little village of Galt in 1833, where her husband had charge of the Dumfries Mils for many years. There are but very few left now of the early pioneers, but those few will remember too vividly the many trials that had to be undergone which are incident to a new country like Canada. During the epidemic of Asiatic Cholera, which was terribly fatal in Galt in 1834, Mrs. Warnock gave evidence of great courage and devotion to the sick and dying and many a family was comforted at that time by her more than unselfish ministration. In 1842 the family removed to Beverly, where ever since she has resided on Meadowhead farm and where the afflicted at all times for miles round could look forward to finding a friend who was able and willing to afford help in their hour of trouble. Her life was a long and active one until within a few hours of her death. She complained on the afternoon of Tuesday of feeling unwell and during the night was restless. The next day the absent members of her family were sent for and at 5 p.m. they wished her good-bye, believing that she was better, but an hour later her life had quietly ebbed away without a struggle.

    Notes:

MR. JAMES WARNOCK was one of the leading business men of the town of Galt A man of large intelligence and great enterprize. A man of principle and sterling integrity. A man whose word was his bond. A strong-minded man, strong at both poles in his loves and in his aversions. He was upright, honest, honorable a man to be relied on. His life was preeminently a business life. But passing beyond that into the sacred circle of the home, where the tender, sweet, fragrant graces grow, there he was most kind, loving, sympathetic He was a devoted husband and a loving father. One who was at rest in the bosom of his family, finding there the highest earthly satisfaction. He was a true, staunch friend. He had a high esteem of my predecessor, Mr. Bentley, and his friendship for him continued to the end. He had been bred up to a respect for God's house, and a reverence for His law, and he was constant in his attendance on the Sabbath services. He thought more and felt more of religion than he expressed in words. He belonged to the old school, who were reticent and who thought these things were not for public talk, but for private and personal enjoyment.

When his last sickness came, his faith was in the Only One who can send succor, and on Him he rested with child-like confidence. How thankful we should be that in our earthly extremity we can say:

" O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for time to come ; Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home."

Fifty years ago Mr. James Warnock began or organized this business, continuing until 1881, when Mr. A. C. Fraser entered the firm. This partnership continued until 1887, when Mr. Warnock retired. Mr. Fraser continued the business when Mr. Colvin entered the firm, the business being removed to the present large premises. The firm make a specialty of heavy hardware, bar iron, steel and black-smiths' supplies, and carry a heavy stock in these lines. They are also heavy dealers in coal, wood, fire-brick and oils. Their coal houses have a capacity of some 15,000 tons. Mr. Fraser is a native of the Granite City, in Scotland, coming to Canada in 1863. Mr. Colvin is a native Canadian, born near Galt. Both gentlemen by virtue of their proud nationality are the material of which sterling men are made, rising from the ranks as they have to the proud position they hold, not only as business men, but in social circles as well. Messrs. James Warnock & Co
., Hardware and Coal Merchants, Main Street

A careful review of the extensive commercial interests of Galt reveals the fact that there exists a class of houses in every respect prepared to compete in the several lines they represent with rival establishments in any other city in the Dominion. Among such a foremost position must be ascribed to Messrs. James Warnock & Co., hardware merchants, Main Street. The business of this house was founded forty years ago, and has grown from small to very extensive proportions. The premises occupied in prosecution of the business consist of a three story and basement stone structure 22x125 feet in dimensions. Of the variety and character of the stock carried it would be impossible to speak too highly. It includes every description of domestic, British and foreign hardware, iron, steel, nails, lead, tin, cutlery, paints, cordage, etc., and carriage builders' supplies; and a full line of everything of this nature, of the best quality and most careful selection is here to be obtained. In addition to this business the firm are large wholesale and retail dealers in coal, having two extensive sheds covering half an acre of ground on Hawthorn Street. They give employment to fourteen hands, and use five teams in the prosecution of their business, which extends through town and country, over the western division of the Grand Trunk Railway and its branches, on Credit Valley from Toronto to Woodstock, and the Northern & North-Western and Midland Railways. The business is steadily increasing annually, and at the present writing is reported to be excellent. Both members of the firm, Mr. James Warnock and Mr. A.C. Fraser, are natives of Scotland and are active, energetic and enterprising business men, and are held in the highest esteem by the community. Mr. Warnock was a member of the Town Council for a great many years, and rendered valuable assistance in its deliberations.

    ADAM WARNOCK

    1828-1902
Member of the Cambridge Hall of Fame (1996) Married: Stephanie Hespeler - 1850

Born in 1828 in Nelson, a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, Adam Warnock immigrated to Canada with his family first to Beverly in 1833 and then, in 1835, to Galt. In 1850 Mr. Warnock married Stephanie Hespeler, the sister of Jacob Hespeler and William Hespeler, and with her had two sons, James Edward Warnock and Charles Raphael Hunter Warnock. Mr. Warnock was what has been described as a "man of prominence" for almost all of his adult life. From 1850 to 1857 he was a partner, with James M. Fraser, in a dry goods and grocery store known as Fraser & Warnock. Following this he formed a partnership with his brother James in the ownership of the Galt Edge Tool Co. formerly the Galt Axe Factory owned by H. H. Date. He served as a member of the 1st Battalion of Waterloo Militia receiving a commission as an Ensign in 1850 and a Lieutenant in 1856. Mr. Warnock was a trustee of the Galt Collegiate Institute and one of the founders of the Galt Hospital Trust. He served as President of the Hospital Trust for three years and was a Vice-President of the Gore Mutual Insurance Company for the last twenty-five years of his life. His interest in the woollen business began as a partner with James Crombie in mills they operated in Plattsville and Preston. The Preston mill later operated as Geo. Pattinson & Co. one of Preston's largest employers and one of the largest woollen producers in the country. In 1881 Mr. Warnock was part of an eight man group known as "The Syndicate" that formed the Galt Knitting Company. The former Robinson & Howell Co. textile mill on Water Street was purchased and converted into a knitting mill. Mr. Warnock became the president of the company and remained in that office for twenty years. The company manufactured shirts and drawers on a moderately large scale by Canadian standards. By the turn of the century the company employed about 110 people. In 1885, in partnership with Andrew M. Newlands, Mr. Warnock founded a small knitting firm which operated under the name of Newlands & Co. In 1894 Mr. Warnock withdrew from the Newlands partnership when he sold his interest in the company to Andrew

Newlands Jr. and Joseph Stauffer. Mr. Warnock retired from business in 1901 due to ill health, leaving the day to day operations of the Galt Knitting Company to his sons James and Charles. He died on August 29, 1902 and is buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery. The Galt Knitting Company manufactured a large variety of knitted underwear, eiderdowns, shoe linings and knitted specialties and remains in business today. Now known as Tiger Brand Knitting Company, the company manufactures a wide range of fashion sportswear and is still operated by members of the Warnock family.

    Notes:

Amelia Beers Warnock was born into a family of prominence but made her own distinct mark in Canada. Taking as her nom-de-plume Katherine Hale, her mother's given names, she was a journalist, poet, essayist, music critic, recitalist and lecturer. Her books of poetry were highly acclaimed, and her books of travel observations, historic houses and cities of Canada were well regarded and serve now as poignant views of developing Canadian identity in the first half of the 20th century. As Hale noted: "My country has never become to me a place I'm just used to, but one full of hidden surprises that I'm always wanting to explore.

Born in Galt, Ontario in 1878 [1874], she was the eldest daughter of James Warnock, an industrialist who was a native of Kilmarnock, Scotland, and Katherine Hale Byard, formerly of Mobile, Alabama. She had a sister, Ann, and a brother, James Byard. Through her mother, she was related to Edward Everett Hale, who wrote The Man Without a Country. Educated in Galt schools, including Galt Collegiate Institute, she sang in local productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. She also attended the Glen Mawr residential and day school in Toronto, also known as Miss Veal's school. Following graduation she travelled to New York to study opera, and also studied in Europe. As a soprano recitalist, she toured some of the English-speaking world. She also presented lectures, including ones on the topic of Canadian literature, as early as 1908....
