How They Farmed Sixty Years Ago

…I can well remember when Noah Bechtel, uncle of John B. Bricker our genial corn borer inspector for Waterloo county, shot a large black grizzly bear in October, 1863. They had seen the bear eight miles north where there was a large bush and swamp, called Queen's Bush, where the farmers had their pigs to get acorns and beechnuts, which were plentiful. Mr. Bear came out sometimes to help them to butcher. We had no selects, a pig was a pig. One day a squad went after him but did not get him. Later in October he came trotting along through Wilmot township. Moses Bechtel and Christian Hallman were ploughing beside Noah Bechtel's cedar swamp when he came walking right up to them. They went in and Bechtel brought his rifle with him. They followed the bear's tracks for a mile from the swamp, through John Forler's swamp, then across the road into another 400 acre bush. John Forler hitched his carriage team into the democrat, drove to Petersburg, and brought a man up with a hound, and John Ernst Jr. came along with his bulldog. Wm. Miller put his hound on the trail and in a short time found Mr. Bruin sound asleep. Miller fired a shot and the bear came trotting through the swamp with the dogs after him. When he saw that he was surrounded it did not take him long to climb a tree. Noah Bechtel, with a well aimed shot, brought the bear down. …

JACOB K. FORLER

On Monday morning, Feb. 17th, the death took place at Wellesley, of Mr. Jacob K. Forler, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 7 days. Mr. Forler had been indisposed for several days, but his condition was not considered serious, and his sudden death came as a great shock to his many friends.

Deceasced was born in Wilmot Township in 1834. He was married to Maria Koch, who predeceased him 12 years ago: They moved to Wellesley about 56 years ago and lived there up to the time of his death. Eleven, children, six sons and five daughters were wore born to them. Two daughters predeceased him, one in infancy and Henry Duench of Berlin about 3 years ago. The surviving, children are John, Berlin; Mrs. J O'Donell, Yale, Mich,; George New Hambur; Jacob, of Berlin; Mrs. H. Schmidt, of Hampstead; Henry and William, of Wellesley; Louis of Detroit; and Emma, of Berlin. Besides the one brothers Christian, of Elmwood, 35 grand children and 8 great grand children are left to mourn his loss.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 19 th to the Missouri Lutheran cemetery.

Death of Mr. Christian Forler

The death occurred on Sunday last, May 29, 1921, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ottman in Hanover of Mr. Christian Forler, aged 83 years. Deceased was born in Waterloo County. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Carolina Niergart, who died 33 years ago. This marriage was blessed with six children, three surviving, as follows: Mrs. Ottman of Hanover; Mrs. H. H. Johnston, of Wilcox, Sask., and Alvin of Moose Jaw, Sask. Three years after the death of his first wife, he married Miss Anna Seip, who survives him. They had no children. Deceased had resided with his granddaughter, Mrs. Norman Wunnenberg, for the past year and a half. He lived practically all his life in Elmwood. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to the Hanover cemetery, Rev. H. Twietmeyer having charge of the services.

Death of Former Resident

There passed away at Waterloo on Wednesday morning, Mr. William F. Hamel, a former well-known resident of New Hamburg at the age of 73 years. He had been in failing health for a long time. The deceased was born in Wellesley where he spent his early days and later for some years resided in Wilmot Centre. His wife died there 28 years ago and he then moved with his family to New Hamburg and resided here for 12 years, after which he moved to Waterloo. He was a staunch adherent of the Lutheran faith and was highly esteemed. He leaves three sons and three daughters, William and Henry, of Waterloo, Harvey, of Montreal, Mrs. Joseph Hemmerley, Miss Laura Hamel and Mrs. Gilbert Holle, all of Waterloo, besides six grandchildren. Mrs. Louis Siegner, of this town is a sister. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock form his late home in Waterloo, where service will be held, thence to the Wilmot Centre Cemetery. The service will be in charge of Rev. C. S. Roberts, pastor of the Waterloo Lutheran Church.

Mr. Chr. Hamel died suddenly at his home, Nelson St., Stratford, yesterday forenoon in his 88th year. The deceased was born in the Wellesley district, where he spent his earlier days, then he moved to Stratford. The late Mr. Hamel was well known in New Hamburg where a number of his nephews and nieces reside. His first wife and a daughter predeceased him. His widow, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Brill of New Hamburg, survives him. The funeral will be held Saturday forenoon with service in the Zion Lutheran Church and interment in Avondale Cemetery. Mrs. Martha Pfanner, 85, died today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hammer, 90 Stirling Ave. Born April 1, 1860, in Wilmot Township she was a daughter of Jacob Forler and Marie Derbecker. The late Mrs. Pfanner was a regular attendant of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies Aid Society. Her husband Moses Pfanner, predeceased her 50 years ago. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clara Doering of Philipsburg and Mrs. John Hammer of Kitchener. Five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive. One son Edward died five years ago and a daughter, Mrs. Theo. Schmidt predeceased her ten years. Remains are resting at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until Monday morning when the removal will be made to the residence of her daughter, 90 Stirling Ave., where a private funeral service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. John Schmieder will officiate. Sympathy of friends will be accepted without flowers.

Death of Mr. Jacob Forler

Mr. Jacob Forler passed away shortly after 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, at his home on Queen Street, after an illness of almost three months, at the age of 37 years. The exact nature of the disease is hard to define, as it had baffled several doctors. There seemed to be a gradual wasting away, towards the end the arms becoming perfectly helpless. He suffered great pain, and during all the long days of sickness, he was unable to lie down, having to be propped up in bed. He bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and the end was peaceful. He leaves a mourning widow, having married Sophia Reichert, who is a sister of Mrs. Peter Hymmen, about 16 years ago. There are no children. The deceased was a tailor and had been employed as head coatmaker by Mr. Geo. Bergman ever since he started in business. Prior to that time he was with the Boehmer Co. and was known as a thorough and obliging workman. He was insured for $1000 in the London & Lancashire Co. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon from the residence to the German Baptist Church, of which he was a member, and thence to Mount Hope Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, two sons and five daughters, Louis and Clayton, Louise, Pauline and Emma at home, Hattie, Hamilton, and Anna McKersie, Kitchener, one brother, George C. Forler, Wilmot township, and sister, Margarita Pfanner, Kitchener. The funeral will take place on Saturday, June 16 that 1:30 o'clock from the residence John Street, to St. John's Lutheran Church, for service and from thence to Mount Hope Cemetery for interment.

A Respected Citizen Gone
John K. Forler Dies This Morning

Mr. John K. Forler, a respected citizen, died this morning at 8:30 o'clock, after a short illness, at his residence, 140 Wellington street. During the past three months he had been troubled with dropsy of the heart but not in severe form. He was able to discharge his duties, as an employee of Messrs. J. G. Kreiner & Co., until a week ago Tuesday and it was not until Monday of this week that he took to his bed.
Mr. Forler was born in Wellesley and lived there until November of last year. He was aged 54 years, 11 months and 3 days. The funeral will be held on Monday, July 21, at 2:30 o'clock from the family residence to Mount Hope cemetery.
Mrs. Forler and the children are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. The children, Miss Mary, Karl and Miss Frieda all reside at home.

Mr. Forler has five brothers and three sisters living. These are: George of New Hamburg; William and Henry of Wellesley; Louis of Detroit and Jacob of Berlin. The sisters are: Mrs. Henry Schmidt of Hamstead, Ont; Mrs. James O'Donnell of Yale, Mich., and Miss Emma Forler of Sutherland, Sask.

Mr. Forler was a consistent member of St. Paul's Lutheran church. The family will receive the sympathy of many friends and acquaintenances in their heavy bereavement. The Record offers them its condolences.

The sad news was received here with much regret of the death of Mr. John K. Forler of Berlin last Friday, and formerly of Wellesley. Interment took place Monday afternoon at Berlin. He leaves a sorrowing widow, one son and two daughters to mourn his loss. The bereaved family have the sympathy of this entire community in their sad affliction.

Death of George K. Forler.

The death of Mr. George K. Forler occurred at his home here yesterday forenoon, April 22nd, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 3 days. This deceased had been in failing health for the past few years clue to a heart condition, but was only seriously ill for a short time. The late Mr. Forler was born in Wellesley and came to New Hamburg about thirty years ago and was employed in the local felt factory and furniture factory for many years. He was a devout Lutheran in religion and for some years was leader of Trinity Lutheran Church choir. He was also for quite a long time a member of the New Hamburg band. On December 26th, 1886, he was married to Elizabeth Schnarr, who survives him besides a family of five sons and three daughters, namely, Alvin, Clayton, Harold, of New Hamburg, Elton, of Chicago, Austin, of Kitchener, Mrs. Milton Bettger, of Monkton, Mrs. J. V. Uttley, of Kitchener, and Mrs. L. Bingeman, New Hamburg. The funeral will be held on Sunday with private service at the home and public service in Trinity Lutheran Church at 1.30

WELLESLEY, June 1 Mrs Henry Schmidt. 75. died yesterday at the home of her son-in-law. Henry Margetts, from a heart attack.

She was born in Wellesley, daughter of the late Jacob Forler and Mary Koch Her husband died 12 years ago Mrs. Sehmidt attended St James' Lutheran Church, North Easthope

Surviving are two sons. Alfred. Kitchener, and Harry, Hampstead: four daughters. Mrs. Fred Reidt. Waterloo, Mrs. William Cook, North Easthope. Mr. Alfred Margetts. Wellesley and Mrs. Valentine Neeb. Kitchener and one brother, William Forler, Galt Twenty-six grand children and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Private funeral service will be held of 2:20 pm Wednesday at the home of her son in law here followed by a public service at St James' Lutheran Church North Easthope at 3 pm. Rev. William Notting will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery

The remains are resting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Margerts

C. Hammer & Co.

This firm is one among the leading firms of the village that are prosperous and reliable. They deal exclusively in boots and shoes, which they also manufacture and repair. They have a large stock of all kinds of footwear of the latest patterns and styles. Their work and ready-made stock will compare favorably with any other in the county. Mr. Hammer, the senior member of the firm, was born in Normanby, Grey county, in 1864. He was married about three years ago to Martha, daughter of Mr. John Dingwall, of this place. He learned the boot and shoe making trade about twenty years ago with his uncle, Mr. John Eidt, now of Philipsburg. For a number of years he was employed by Mr. Hill, who was then conducting the business. He then purchased the business from Mr. Hill and was a partner with George Lips, who died about ten months after they had engaged in business. From that time on Mr. Hammer was alone in the business until about a year and a half ago he took as partner Mr. H Forler. Mr. Forler was born here in 1870. He learned his trade with Mr. Henry Hill. The business is one of the oldest in this section, having been established by Mr. Hill about forty five years ago. Mr. Hammer and his partner, Mr. Forler, are seldom idle, always working at the bench when not engaged at the counter atttending to customers in the ready-made department. Their work will always stand inspection. While here I was shown a valuable relic which is now in the possession of Mr. Hammer. It is a medal received by his grandfather for meritorous conduct in the war with Napoleon in 1814 and 1815. It was made from a cannon captured by the Germans from the French. On one side is the inscription: "K.W.II seinen tapfern, Hessen, 1821. On the reverse side, "Gott brach des Feindes macht und Hessen ward befreit." Its worthy recipient died many years ago from the result of wounds he sustained in that sanguinary strife.

William John Forler, 71, died suddenly at his home in Galt last week after a lingering illness. He was born in Wellesley and lived there until about ten years ago when he went to Galt.

He was a dyer by trade, working with the Reiner Woollen Mills in Wellesley for 40 years and with Charles Turnbull Knitting Company in Galt. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, supervisor of the Sunday School and choir leader.

He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Caroline Meyer, four daughters, Mrs. Arthur Schaff, Petersburg Road, Mrs. Carl Alles, Detroit, Mrs. A. B. White, Toronto, and Ruth at home; one son, Howard, Galt, and 5 grandchildren. A son, Walter, predeceased him 19 years ago.

Funeral services were held on Sunday from his residence to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Wellesley and interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Death of Mrs. J. Ottmann

The Angel of Death supervened last Tuesday afternoon and relieved Mrs. Jacob Ottmann of her long suffering, she having been ill for the past few years although only bedridden for a week or so. Acute kidney trouble was the immediate cause of death. The deceased lady was born in Neustadt, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Forler. She had attained the age of 61 years and 18 days. She married Mr. Jacob Ottmann in Wellesley, and came to Hanover quite a number of years ago, where her kindly nature won a wide circle of friends who regretted very much to hear of her death. Mr. Ottmann passed away in October, 1919. She is survived by four children, Julia (Mrs. N. Wunnenberg), Aleda and Edna of town and Gordon of Kincardine, also 2 grandchildren, to whom The Post extends sympathy. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock to the Hanover cemetery, with a memorial service in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church after burial. Rev. H. Twietmeyer will conduct the services.

GALT, Jacob Smith, 80, of 49 Bich Ave., Galt, died Wednesday, in the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital. Born in Wilmot Township, he had been a resident of Galt, for 51 years, where he was associated with the R. A. Briscoe Company, for 43 years. For a number of years, he was manager of the Briscoe store. Mr. Smith was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Galt. Surviving are his wife, the former Lillian Witte: one son, W. Cecil Smith of Galt: one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Hazel) English of Galt: three sisters, Mrs. Clara Zimmerman of Kitchener and Mrs. Rose Mueller and Mrs. Margaret Lantz, both of Waterloo and one grandson. The funeral will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m., from the Little Funeral Home, Galt, with interment in Mount View Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home.

Death came after an illness of a few days at the home of her brother-in-law, Mr. Norman Zimmerman at St. Agatha. The deceased is survived by her aged father, Mr. Jacob R. Mrs. Christina Hiller

The death took place at the Kitchener-Waterloo hospital on Saturday night of Christina Hamel, widow of the late Henry Hiller and daughter of Mr. Wm. Hamel, formerly of New Hamburg. She had been ill for only four days and was in her 46th year of age. The deceased was born in Philipsburg and later lived for a time in Wilmot Centre. She came with her father to New Hamburg after the death of her mother and resided here until her marriage to Harry Hiller of this town, when they moved onto a farm near Linwood. Her husband predeceased her 14 years ago and after that she made her home with her father in Waterloo, where he had moved to from here. The deceased was an active and faithful member of the Lutheran Church. She was active in church work of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waterloo and of the Ladies' Aid Society. She was also a member of the Crystal Rebekah Lodge. There are left in bereavement one son, Harry, her father, Mr. Wm. Hamel, three sisters and three brothers, Mrs. J. Hemmerly, Mrs. Gilbert Holle, Miss Laura Hamel, William and Henry Hamel, all of Waterloo, and Harvey, of Kitchener.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with service in St. John's Lutheran church and interment in Mount Hope Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Reble, of Hamilton, owing the Rev. Mr. Roberts, pastor of the Waterloo church being ill.

Ill only four days, Mrs. Christina Hiller, 66 Peppler street, Waterloo, passed away at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital Saturday night in her 46th year. She was born in Philipsburg and had been a resident of Waterloo for the past 14 years. Mrs. Miller was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. The late Mr. Hiller died 14 years ago. Remains of Mrs. William Fellows, formerly of this city, who passed away in Detroit last Friday, will arrive via the Canadian National at 9 o'clock tonight for interment in Mount Hope Cemetery on Tuesday. Mrs. Pauline Henrietta Forler, 109 John St. E., Waterloo, died at St. Mary's Hospital last night following a lengthy illness. Deceased was born at St. Agatha, July 19, 1903, the daughter of Andrew Kress and the late Mrs. Kress. She was married to Clarence Forler who predeceased her in 1936. She is survived by her father; one son, John, at home, and four daughters, Pearl, Myrtle, Inez and Irene, all at home. Mr. A. Duench Passes Away

Untimely and Sad Death of Well Known Young Tailor of City Was in his 32nd Year

The many friends in this city of Albert Duench will be grieved to learn of his death which occurred at the home of his father-in-law, Jacob Scharlach, 111 Lancaster Street, Sunday evening at 7 o'clock. Deceased was a tailor and until compelled to retire owing to failing health had been employed at Bucknell's custom tailoring establishment. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and took an active interest in the work of the various societies of the church. About a week ago Mr. Duench was compelled to take to his bed and since that time his condition grew gradually worse until finally the end came yesterday evening. Deceased was born in Wellesley, 32 years ago, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Duench of that place. He is survived by his wife and three small children; also two brothers and one sister, John and Walter Duench and Mrs. August Kudoba, of this city. He is also survived by his father, Henry Duench, of Wellesley. Mr. Duench was a popular resident of the city and had a genial nature which endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. He was an exemplary father and husband and his death comes as a severe blow to his bereaved family. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Jacob Scharlach and later from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where services will be held. Interment will be made in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Kudoba was born Aug. 21, 1885, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Duench of Wellesley. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Her husband, August Kudoba, whom she married in Kitchener in 1906, died March 26, 1953.

Born in Wellesley, he was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Kitchener. He taught in the Sunday school and was supervisor of the senior department for many years. He was a member of the IOOF and was on the executive of the 20^th Cub Pack.

1919 he married the former Goldie Hebel, who died in 1947. Walter G. Duench

A grocer in Kitchener for 40 years. Walter G. Duench, 59, of 61 Ellen St. East, died early today at KW Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 18, 1895, in Wellesley. he was a son of the late Henry Duench and Christine Forler.

He started in the grocery business 40 years ago with August Kujdoba on Waterloo street in 1919 he opened a store at the Five Points. Frederick street. He retired last September.

Prominent in Masonic circles, he was a member of the Grand River Lodge, AF and AM and of the Kitchener chapter. RAM. He served as principal of the latter lodge and was treasurer for 23 years. He was elected to the Grand Council of Anointed High Priests of Ontario.

On Nov. 6, 1917, he married the former Elizabeth Arndt who survives. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Mrs. William (Betty) Wolfe of Kitchener; a brother, John, and a sister, Mrs. August (Julia) Kudoba, both of Kitchener. One grandson also survives. Three brothers, Albert. William and Carl and one sister, Clara, predeceased him.

The death of Mrs. 'Selma Uttley, widow of the late Joseph T. Uttley, occurred last Saturday at K-W Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 64 years, following a lengthy illness. Deceased was born in Wellesley on April 1, 1892, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Forler, who later became residents of New Hamburg. Following her marriage she moved to Kitchener Where he husband predeceased her April 9, 1946. A son, Brooks, died in England May 27, 1955. Surviving are four sons, Lorne, Toronto; Frank, Fergus; and Harold and Lyle of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Doris Murray, London, Ont.; Mrs. Gordon (Ruth) McIntyre, Toronto; and Mrs. Vernon (Marjorie) Rickert, Windsor; five brothers, Alvin, Harold and Clayton, all of New Hamburg; Elton, Chicago; and Austin, Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Milton Boettger, West Monkton and Mrs. Lawrence Bingeman, New Hamburg; and also 18 grandchildren.

The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, conducted by Rev. A. W. Lotz, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kitchener, of which departed was a member. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery.

Also surviving are 14 grand- children and 12-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, the late George K. Forler and the former Elizabeth Schnarr; five brothers, Alvin, Clayton, Elton, Ause tin and Harold and three sisters, Clarissa, Selma and Adella.

Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, after 2 p.m. today until noon Friday, April 27, when transfer will be made to Trinity Lutheran Church for service at 2: 30 p.m., with Rev. Mrs. Schaaf was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waterloo, the Elmdale Women's Institute, The Women of Redeemer, The Lutheran Women's Missionary League, The Seniors' Club at the adult recreation centre, Waterloo and a former member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Petersburg where she had attended for 58 years. Mrs. Schaaf enjoyed her large flower garden on the Petersburg Highway and will be remembered by many who purchased flowers from her at the Kitchener Farmer's Market.

Dear mother of Miriam (Mrs. Ernest Tallman) of Kitchener and Madeline (Mrs. Calvin Honderich) of New Hamburg; sister of Mrs. Helen Alles of Detroit, Mrs. A.B. (Charlotte) White of Downsview and Mrs. William (Ruth) Birss of Waterloo. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. N. Wunnenberg Passes Suddenly

Mrs. Norman Wunnenberg, a highly esteemed resident of Hanover for many years, passed away suddenly, following a heart attack at Victoria Hospital, London, last Thursday June 3rd. The late Mrs. Wunnenberg was born in May 3rd, 1888, at Wellesley, Ontario, a daughter, Julia Laura, of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Ottman. She came to Hanover with her parents in 1909, where she has resided since. In 1911, deceased married Mr. Norman Wunnenberg of Hanover, who predeceased her in 1916. Surviving are one daughter, (Inez) Mrs. Peter Kowalsky and one son, Herbert, both of Hanover, and two grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Aleda, of Rochester, N.Y., and Edna of Toronto, and one brother, Gordon, of Kincardine. The late Mrs. Wunnenberg made many close associations and friends, by her sterling character and quiet efficiency. Treasurer of the Hanover Women's Hospital Aid since its organization here some twenty-five years ago, she was to have been honoured by a life membership in the Society at the District Conference held here on Tuesday. Quiet and unassuming her efficiency and quiet presence, will be missed for a long time by her fellow members of this organization, who attended the funeral service in a body. The late Mrs. Wunnenberg was a charter member and a Past Noble Grand of Evergreen Rebekah Lodge, and a faithful and devoted member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, who could always be depended upon to use her talents for service in the highest possible measure. Mrs. Wunnenberg was organist in the Sunday School for many years, the first president of the Women's Missionary Society and an active member of the Ladies' Aid, the members of which formed a guard of honor at the memorial service. The late Mrs. Wunnenberg's friendly and helpful influence will be missed in many circles, but it is in her home where she was an ideal mother and a loving sister, that her place will never be filled, and much sympathy is expressed for her family in their bereavement. The funeral was held on Sunday June 6th, with service at her late residence, followed by a memorial service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. S. Wittig. Special music was provided by the choir of the church, and the Ladies' Aid sang "Asleep in Jesus", very effectively. Interment took place in Hanover Cemetery. The pallbearers were Mayor A.J. Metzger, Messrs. Osborne Orr, William Diebel, William Henry, Albert Seim and Clarence Becker. The beautiful floral tributes, bearing mute tribute to the affection and esteem, in which Mrs. Wunnenberg was held throughout the community, were carried by Messrs. Harry Diebel, Robert Hocking, Charles Hocking, Robert Gruetzner, Alton Schaus, P. V. Schaus, George Booth, Jack Lang, Norman Knapp, William Smith, Oscar Becker, Walter Widmeyer and Harold Winkler.

Died in Young Manhood

The death of Mr. Norman J. Wunnenberg, a popular young Hanover man, on Thursday last at the early age of 26 years cast a shadow over the town. The grim reaper is always a sad visitor, but when, as in this case, its victim was a young man just on the threshold of life, it seems doubly sad, and hard to understand. Norman, who was the only son of Mr. Henry Wunnenberg, was born and raised in Hanover, and his friends were legion. A big fellow, good natured and large hearted, he will be missed around town, but it is in his own home where he will be mostly and sincerely missed, his own home where he leaves a young wife and two little children. If the sincerest sympathy of the community can at all mitigate the blow, the bereaved ones have the knowledge that a very wide circle of friends feel for them very, very deeply. Deceased was ill for several months, and the cause of death was perforation of the bowels and general peritonitis. Norman was a member of the I.O.O.F. and the members of that order were kindness itself to the poor young fellow during his weeks of suffering. The ??? Oddfellows lived up to the highest ideals of their order in their treatment of the late Norman Wunnenberg. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Hanover cemetery, the Oddfellows marching in a body to the cemetery. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Ben Zum, R. H. Richardson, Dr. Stalker, Leslie Millar, Wm. Thedort and Bert Scarborough. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. Tweitmeyer, at the house, grave and at St. Matthew's Lutheran church after the interment. Among friends from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. F. Lichler of Mitchell, Mr. Noah Liedler of Baden, Mr. Charles Wunnenberg, wife and daughter of Southampton, Mrs. John Forler, Mr. Eldon Becker and Mr. Gordon Ottman, all of Kitchener, Mr. Edward Becker of West Toronto, Mr. Leslie Grabill of Toronto, Mr. Christian Forler and wife of Elmwood, Mrs. Herb Kaufman, Miss Ottman and Mrs. John Hohl, all of Wellesley, and Mr. Len. Schwartz of Wiarton and Mr. Fred Wunnenberg of Kitchener.

Mrs. William Sixtus


Mrs. William Sixtus, nee Floretta Forler, Edna Street, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital at 9:30 o'clock this morning following a lingering illness. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Forler, Mrs. Sixtus was born in Hanover on Aug. 17, 1895. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and belonged to the Ladies' Aid Society of that church. She is survived by her husband, one son, LAC. William A. at Brantford; three daughters, the Misses Helen, Rita and Shirley, all at home, and by two brothers, Emmanuel Forler of Detroit, and Gordon Forler of Jamaica, New York. Public funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home with Rev. A. G. Jacobi in charge. Burial will be made in Mount Hope Cemetery. The remains are resting at the funeral home.

Clarence Forler
Brantford, Jan. 8 - Clarence Forler, who moved to this city seven years ago from Kitchener, the city of his birth, where he had been employed by the Canadian National Railway, freight department, passed away here at his home, 12 Grand street, early this morning. Mr. Forler was about 38 years of age. He had been ailing for the past year. Surviving are his wife, nee Pauline Kress, formerly of Waterloo, and five small children, the oldest being nine years. Two brothers, Emmanuel of Detroit, Gordon in New York, and one sister, Mrs. William Sixtus, Kitchener, also survive.

Brantford, Jan. 8 - Clarence John Forler, native of Southampton, who spent his early life in Hanover and Kitchener, coming to Brantford nine years ago, died today at the Brant Sanitarium. He was a prominent member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. His widow and four daughters survive. He was born in 1898.
