    Melancholy Suicide

It is our painful duty this week, to record a very sad occurrence that took place in the Gaol, in this town, by which an erring mortal hurried himself into an awful eternity, with his own hand. The unfortunate man, named Samuel Guggesberg, said to be respectably connected, and a resident of the township of Blenheim having. been arrested for debt of fifty dollars and committed to Gaol about three weeks ago, was discovered by the Gaoler, on Friday last, in the passage leading to his night room, laying on his back, in a pool of blood with his throat cut. An inquest was held on view of the body the same evening, Dr. Turquand Coroner, and the jury, failed to lead them to a definite conclusion, as to the cause which led to the perpetration of the deed The following is the evidence on the case: Mr. Cummings, Gaoler, sworn stated that he saw the deceased about 4 o'clock, and subsequently about 8 o'clock in the morning; apparently quite well; the deceased then told witness he wanted breakfast of bread and beef witness ordered the servant girl to get breakfast for the deceased, and then went down to the town on his return, nearly 12 o'clock went to see he deceased about some notes he had two days before, spoken of giving witness for his board when they have the means on entering they day-room he did not see deceased, but a saw the remains of his breakfast on the table, a German bible lying open, and his pipe beside it the boots he had on in the morning, were standing of at one side of the room witness went towards the night-room, and found him lying on his back, on the, floor of the passage, in the midst of blood with his throat cut, and immediately judged he had cut his throat with his own hand went and called his man, Charles Bush, to came in, as Guggesberg had cut his throat the man came and examined, as did also the Sheriff and Clerk of the Peace, a razor, all over blood, was found on the window sill, over where deceased lay. In answer to questions by jurors could not say he was crazy, Mr. Muma, in company with Mr. Ball the lawyer, call to see him yesterday after which he told witness, he was afraid Muma wanted to keep him Gaol he appeared very much afraid and said he had a great many enemies - he had been confined in Gaol about three weeks, but without looking at his book, could not tell exactly he complained being sick last week got medicine from the doctor for him he had the razor about a week debtors generally bring their own kit with them the razor belonged to the debtor's room he asked for a looking glass this morning to shave himself witness asked him if he slept last night, he replied, he did previous to Monday last, rest was broken gave him a glass of hot grog, with sixty drops of laudanum by the doctor's orders he had a vial of medicine besides, to be given him occasionally, until sleep would be produced, as was the case, on Monday night last, and has since rested well gave him no medicine these two days past, as sleep was produced gave him in all, since Monday 1st, two glasses of raw grain whiskey none since yesterday morning gave none with the doctor's order from his manner and the way he talked, witness thought that he was laboring under an indisposition of mind.

Charles Bush, Sworn, saw deceased lying dead in the manner described by Mr. Cummings was not acquainted with him only saw him once at the hole of the door did not know that he was crazy believes he cut his own throat no doubt about it.

Bridge Grace, Sworn went into the room where Guggesberg usually ate his victuals, this morning, with his breakfast Guggesberg was standing near the window he did not speak went out and saw him, through the hole in the door, going to eat his breakfast, which consisted of potatoes, meat, bread, butter, and two eggs and tea he did not appear sick, saw nothing unusual about him saw him again in the position he was found by Mr. Cummings believes he killed himself, has no doubt about it was in the habit of taking his meals to him. One evening, last week, he appeared not to speak plain, merely whispered and witness did not understand what he said - though he was not right thought he was delirious this morning he looked rather downcast he was not in the habit of speaking much made no noise in his room was always quiet.

The Coroner, who is the Gaol Surgeon, stated that when call upon to see Guggesberg, he found him feverish and depressed in mind; on Sunday last he was poorly, and from appearances he was apprehensive that the deceased was threatened with an attack of delirium tremens; understood from him that a month ago he had been on "a great spree;" in answer to inquiry, deceased told him, the Coroner, that he had had delirium tremens before; in consequence, advised for him and prescribed some medicine, and a portion of laudanum in a little grog, in order to produce sleep and prevent delirium coming on; the Gaoler on Monday, had learned that deceased had slept and was better; and that he, the Gaoler, had discontinued to give the medicine as the prisoner's rest was good, of which course he, the Coroner, approved. The Jury upon the above evidence unanimously agreed on the following verdict: -

"The the deceased Samuel Guggesberg, a prisoner for debt in the Gaol of the County of Oxford, came to his death by cutting his own throat with a razor, which laboring under an extreme depression of spirits"

"SUICIDE OF A GAOL DEBTOR. -
A correspondent from Woodstock, mentions the melancholy fact that Mr. Samuel Guglesbury, late of the Township of Blenheim, committed suicide, by cutting his throat with a razor, in Woodstock Gaol, on the 22nd instant. He was confined there as a debtor, and his incarceration produced an attack of nervous illness, which no doubt was the precursor of that temporary insanity which prompted the commission of the rash act. The unfortunate man seemed to have acted with the utmost coolness, even after he had inflicted upon himself the fatal wound. The razor was found carefully enclosed in its scabbard, upon the window sill of the cell, where it must have been placed by the suicide, while the life blood was lowing from his body."

    Notes:

Friedrich Guggisberg (referred to as "Frederick" Guggisberg in commercial business directories) was the founder of one of Preston's earliest furniture works. Born in Uetendorf, Canton Bern, Switzerland in 1818, he came to Canada in 1834 with two older sisters and their families. In Preston, they joined two older brothers, Johann and Samuel. In 1838, Frederick started his own cabinetmaking shop, which grew from making chairs to a diversified manufacturing concern, making desks, tables and some of the first barrel type patented revolving drawer desks and high roll-top desks in Canada. The finest designs were sent to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. At one time, the Guggisberg furniture works was the largest employer in Preston. Involved in community affairs, in 1852, Frederick was a member of Preston's first village council. He is buried in the Old Preston Cemetery on Fountain Street, Cambridge.

After Guggisberg's death in 1888, his three sons took over the business and later sold out their interest. The business became the Preston Furniture Company, manufacturing office desks. This company was sold to Percy Hilborn in 1919, and became consolidated with Hilborn's Canadian Office and School Furniture Company in 1928.

In 1841, Frederick Guggisburg started making chairs in Preston. Later he expanded his line to include pieces of furniture which were made largely by hand of such exquisite design and splendid workmanship that he found his limited space inadequate to cope with the demand from people who could afford to pay his price and wanted pieces of really fine furniture for their homes.

Some of this old Guggisburg furniture is still to be encountered here and there in homes where its present owners continue to admire the lovely lines and count it priceless. It is not for sale.

On December 11th, 1849, Jacob Hespeler invoiced Mr. Guggisburg in Preston with 11,281 feet of maple two by fours (sawn here) at $13.00 per M feet. This was probably used in making furniture. Prior to 1846 there was a carpenter here named Adam Hess who owned a house property on the north side of Queen Street east of Harvey. He had previously purchased the property from Michael Bergey and through it ran a small creek which carried water from several springs on the side hill down to the river.

In 1863, Hess sold his property to Fred. Guggisburg and in 1864 was tenant of the house on it. In 1866, Fred. Guggisburg is rated as owner of two acres on the north side of Queen Street, evidently the Hess lot, and other property between it and the river. In this year, George Guenther appears as Tenant of the Hess house. In 1871, Mr. Guenther bought one-fifth of an acre from Guggisburg, probably the house where he was living as tenant. The year following, that is, 1872, Guggisburg goes out of our picture and Mr. Guenther is shown as owner.

Previously, on March 5th, 1861, Guenther purchased from Joseph Oberholtzer seventy-four and three-quarters perches of land, part of lot ten, in the second concession, that is west of Harvey Street.

    _______________________

Death of Frederick Guggisberg, Esq., of Preston - On Wednesday morning the sad intelligence reached us that our old and genial friend, Mr. Frederick Guggisberg, had suddenly expired at his residence in Preston, and inquiry soon proved the truth of the distressing report. For some time past, while not interfering with his pursuits or the energy of his life, Mr. Guggisberg complained of severe pains at his heart, which medical men consulted, pronounced of a rheumatic nature. These pains were but transitory, and he paid but little attention to them. On Tuesday he was about the factory his usual cheery, happy self; but on Wednesday morning, shortly after breakfast, a very severe spasm occurred; he fainted, and in but a very few moments passed away.

Mr. Guggisberg was born in the village of Thun, Canton Berne, Switzerland, and came to Canada with his sister, the late Mrs. Mosser, in 1834. He entered at once as an apprentice in a Cabinet Factory in Dundas and, completing his apprenticeship, in 1938, moved to Preston, where he established himself in his business and laid the foundation of what proved wealth for himself and now one of the largest and most successful Furniture Manufactories in the Province. Mr. Guggisberg retired in favor of his sons in 1879, and has since enjoyed wisely and usefully, the competence he had earned in his well spent business life. In 1852, he was married to Miss Ernst, daughter of the late John Ernst, of Petersburg, Mrs. Guggisberg dying in 1861, leaving a family of five children, three sons, viz: - Messrs. Christian and John Guggisberg, of the Preston factory, and Mr. Walter Guggisberg, head of the firm in Galt, and two daughters, Mrs. Philip Boehmer, of Berlin, and Mrs. Allemang, of Preston.

In 1880 Mr. Guggisberg visited his native town in Switzerland, and while there was united in marriage to the estimable lady who now survives him. After a stay of over a year, they returned to Canada, again visiting Switzerland in 1884. Returning from this trip Mr. and Mrs. Guggisberg have since continuously resided at their beautiful residence in Preston. In the wider circle of friends and acquaintances of the deceased gentleman there will be none who will not regret his death. He had the peculiar faculty of making friends and keeping them. He was energetic and industrious in the pursuit of his business, and all his dealings were so pleasant, straightforward and honorable, that his customers became his friends.

His funeral will take place from the family residence at 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. He will be interred in Preston Cemetery.

The Funeral of the Late Mr. F. Guggisberg took place on Friday last on the arrival of the morning train from Toronto. The body was enclosed in a very handsome coffin which on being transferred from the car to the platform of the station was opened for a few minutes, to enable those friends who wished to take a last look at the remains. The body was then placed in the hearse and, preceded by the members of the Masonic Lodges, and followed by a very large concourse of mourners, the cortege proceeded slowly through the streets to Trinity Church, where the services for the dead were read by Dean Boomer and the Rev. Isaac Brock, pastor of the Church From thence the cortege proceeded to Trinity Church Cemetery, where the body was lowered into the grave and where the peculiar and imposing ceremonies of the Masonic Body were performed. The closing services of the English Church were then read, and the last token of respect had been paid to all that was mortal of our old friend. As a token of respect, the stores in town were all closed while the funeral procession passed through the street.

    Death of Mrs. Stager

The following additional particulars of Mrs. Stager of New Dundee who died suddenly at German Mills will be read with interest:

The deceased was the youngest daughter of the late John Meyer, and was raised Guelph on the farm now occupied by her only brother, John Meyer, jr. She was a niece of the late Guggisberg brothers of Preston, and a cousin of Mr. David Meyer, well known in New Hamburg. She leaves a sorrowing husband, 4 children, one brother and several sisters, among whom are the widow of Mr. Henry Weicker, late of Berlin, who lived for many years in Zorra and was well known in New Hamburg, and Mrs. Zellner, of Tavistock. She was a strict adherent of the Lutheran church and a member at the time of her death. She had been an industrious and saving woman and did much to help her now mourning husband to gain the homestead they own near this place. The bereaved husband no doubt, very keenly feels the mother and a careful companion in life.

    Notes:

We this week have the melancholy duty of chronicling the death of Frederick Guggisberg, which occurred on Tuesday last the 25th ult. at Toronto; where he has been, since the beginning of the year, under treatment of Dr. Hodder, for a disease of the law and facial membranes, which ultimately extended to the brain.

Coming to Galt at the age of twelve, he entered the store of Fraser & Warnock, as message and shop-boy and with plodding industry, perseverance, and application to business which characterized his after career; he gradually raised himself, step by step, to the position of one of the principal merchants in Galt. Identifying himself with its progress, he occupied the several positions, of Ensign in the Volunteers, Councilor for Ward 4, and Church Warden for Trinity Church, faithfully well. The cares of his rapidly extending business, of late, required all of his attention, and when compelled, in October last, by the disease to which he ultimately succumbed, to withdraw from the management of the "Waterloo House"; few thought that the old familiar features would never again be seen on Main street. After a lingering illness by his prolonged sufferings, gave way under a painful operation, on the morning of the 20th ult. On the Saturday following, he became unconscious and continued so to the time of his death, on Tuesday evening at half past six. His body was brought from Toronto on Friday morning, and was received at the station by members of Galt Lodge (of which he was a member), Alma Lodge and the Waterloo Chapter of Royal Arch Masons; together with a numerous concourse of friends. As the funeral cortege slowly wended its way to Trinity Church, crowds of spectators lined the way, and on Main street the shops were closed as a mark of respect. The service of the Church of England for the burial of the dead was read by the Very Rev. the Dean of Huron, assisted by the Rector, the Rev. I. Brock; and at its conclusion, P. M. Cranston read the Masonic service with the brethren assisting in the customary solemn ceremonies. Few there were who could not join with the brethren in saying "Let us cast around his foibles, whatever they may have been, the broad mantle of a mason's charity, and let us cheerfully render to his memory, the praise to which his virtues have entitled him.

    ________________________

Brigadier-General Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, KCMG, DSO, (20 July 1869 - 21 April 1930), soldier and administrator, was born in Galt, Ontario, Canada, a second-generation descendant of an immigrant from Berne, Switzerland, the eldest son of Frederick Guggisberg, retail-goods merchant, of Galt, by his wife, Dora Louisa Willson. Guggisberg published a number of works on military topics and Africa.

Moving to England about 1879, Guggisberg was educated at Burney's School, near Portsmouth ; entered the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, in 1887, and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1889. He served in Singapore from 1893 to 1896, and became instructor in fortification at Woolwich in 1897, where he distinguished himself by reforming the methods and syllabus of instruction. In 1900 he published The Shop: The Story of the Royal Military Academy, and, under the pseudonym "Ubique", Modern Warfare, in 1903.

Sir Frederick Gordon GuggisbergIn 1902 Guggisberg was employed by the Colonial Office on a special survey of the Gold Coast Colony and Ashanti, and in 1905 was appointed director of surveys in that colony. In 1908 he returned to Chatham for regimental work: but in 1910 was appointed director of surveys in Southern Nigeria .

Nigeria gave him full scope for his energies and organizational skills, and he compiled The Handbook of the Southern Nigeria Survey (1911) for the guidance of his assistants. Of this work the director-general of the ordnance survey wrote: The duties of all members of the staff were strictly defined and, in particular, sensible rules were laid down as to the relations of the staff with the civil administration. Much attention was paid to the treatment of villagers; unpaid labour was forbidden; all goods bought were to be paid for at the recognized rate, and great care was to be exercised not to damage the crops... They were model instructions and the survey of Nigeria was a model survey..

On the union of Southern Nigeria and the Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1913, Guggisberg was appointed surveyor-general of Nigeria. In 1914 he was appointed director of public works on the Gold Coast, but he rejoined the army on the outbreak of World War I . He commanded the 94th field company, Royal Engineers, from 1915 to 1916, and was in command of the Royal Engineers in the 8th division during the battle of the Somme (July 1916), and in the 66th division from November 1916. He was brigadier-general commanding the 170th infantry brigade 1917-1918, assistant-inspector-general of training, general headquarters, France, in 1918; and in command of the 100th infantry brigade in 1918. He was mentioned in dispatches five times, and was awarded the D.S.O. (1918).

Sir Frederick Gordon GuggisbergIn 1919 Guggisberg was appointed governor and commander-in-chief of the Gold Coast. There he energetically undertook works of development and extension of railways, and created the deep water harbour of Takoradi, superseding the use of surf-boats for handling traffic. In 1923 he commissioned the construction of Accra 's Korle-Bu Hospital, the finest and most modern institution of its kind in colonial Africa at the time. During his time in the Gold Coast, as during his time in Nigeria, Guggisberg was lucky to be able to benefit from the advice of the geologist Albert Ernest Kitson, who took a keen interest in developing local infrastructures.

Close association with native Africans during his survey work convinced Guggisberg that the African races are capable of eventually attaining the development levels of Europe. Toward the close of his life he wrote: "My practical experience... during the last twenty-seven years has convinced me that what individuals have achieved, in spite of ill-selected systems of education, can be achieved by the race generally, provided we alter our educational methods". In order to carry out that purpose he founded Achimota College for the training of native teachers and instructors; it was to become the largest and most complete establishment for the education of native Africans.

The aim of Guggisberg's policy was the development of the country by and for the natives rather than for the benefit of European capitalists. In 1928 Guggisberg was appointed governor and commander-in-chief of British Guiana, but owing to failing health he was obliged to leave the colony in 1929, and soon afterwards resigned the appointment. He introduced drastic administrative reforms and devoted himself energetically to the problems of maintaining and improving the system of drainage and irrigation upon which the sugar and rice cultivation of the colony depended. He also promoted immigration and peasant settlement and the development of the production and marketing of rice. These activities were cut short by his illness and resignation in 1929. He died at Bexhill-on-Sea at the age of 60.

During his last illness Guggisberg addressed to his personal friends a remarkable letter setting forth the aims which he had had in view in his administrative work in British Guiana, his confidence in divine guidance and in the spirit of Christianity, and his hope of being able to return to Africa "to try to do some more work for the African races.... As you know", he concluded, "my heart is in Africa, and I believe that away from the trammels of the Colonial Office, there is opportunity for me to do something useful both for the Empire and for the natives of Africa."

Guggisberg was a tall and athletic figure, as a young man very handsome, and always of impressive and dignified presence. His personality was attractive and inspiring. He was for some years captain of the Royal Engineers' cricket eleven, and was a fine player of polo, racquets, golf, and football . He was created C.M.G. in 1908, and K.C.M.G. in 1922, and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1917.

    Guggisberg was twice married:

on 20 September 1895 in Trichinopoly, Madras Presidency, South India, he married Ethel Emily Hamilton Way, daughter of Colonel Wilfred FitzAlan Way, of the Northumberland Fusiliers, whom he divorced in 1904 and by whom he had three daughters

on 15 August 1905 in Staines to (Lilian) Decima Moore, the actress, daughter of Edward Henry Moore, of Brighton, county analyst. She accompanied him on his survey journeys, and their joint book, We Two in West Africa (1909), is an interesting study of a transitional phase in West African development.

In 1973 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the construction of Korle-Bu Hospital in Accra, the Ghanaian government honoured Guggisberg with the erection of a large statue, a rare tribute paid by a post-colonial government to one of its colonial governors.
