    CARL N. WEBER
    1899-1978

    Born in Elmira, Ontario, C.N.Weber, in 1923, purchased the wholesale hardware business of John Fennell in Kitchener and organized Weber Hardware, later to become C.N Weber Limited. A longtime member and past-president of the Kitchener Board of Trade (Kitchener Chamber of Commerce), he was elected chairman of the Kitchener Urban Renewal Committee in 1971. He was a director of Canada Trust, the Equitable Life Insurance Company and the Economical Mutual Insurance Company.

    Beyond his business interests, he served his community as a member of the K-W Hospital Commission for twenty-two years and was chairman for twenty of those years. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo from the time it was founded until his death. He was also a trustee and past-president of the Ontario Hospital Association.

    An active member of the Lutheran Church, he was a Canadian delegate to the World Council of Churches in India in 1961. He was a member of the executive council of the Lutheran Church in America, a member and chairman of its board of publications, a member of its pensions board and an executive member of the Eastern Canada Synod.

    WEBER, Carl N. - At Boca Raton Community Hospital, Boca Raton, Fla., on Wednesday, March 1, 1978, after a brief illness, Carl N. Weber, age 79 years, of 1501-81 Church St., Kitchener.

    Mr. Weber was born in Elmira, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Karl Weber and the former Margaret Hammer. He was founder and chairman of the board of C.N. Weber Ltd. and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cambridge.
    Survived by his wife, the former Irene Wittig; five sons, Carl J., Eric, and Bruce, all of Kitchener, Paul and John (Jack) of Waterloo, and two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Ilene) Torode of Basking Ridge, N.J. and Mrs. Keith (Jene) Good of Kitchener; one brother, Philip, of Agincourt and two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Mary) Kruse of Kitchener and Mrs. Caroline Nickason of Kincardine. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Predeceased by one brother and one sister.

    Resting at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday and 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday. At noon on Sunday removal will be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kitchener, for the funeral service at 2 p.m., Rev. Willis Ott and Rev. Terry Pitts officiating. A family committal service will be held at Woodland cemetery, Kitchener on Monday.

    Business:
    C. N. Weber is a complex organization, but it started simply enough as hardware store founded by Samuel Date in 1855. He sold tools and supplies needed by carpenters, metal smiths and carriage makers in the community of Berlin, which later became Kitchener.
    Date sold the store to John Fennell, a prominent community leader who died in 1922. In 1923, C.N. Weber bought the store from Fennell's widow. Over time, the business shifted from retail sales to industrial supply.

    Carl married Anna Irena "Irene" Wittig 24 Dec 1925, Milverton, Mornington Twp., Perth Co., Ontario. Anna (daughter of John Wittig and Gertrude Gerth) was born 11 Jun 1903, Milverton, Mornington Twp., Perth Co., Ontario; died 16 Dec 1994, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , Woodland Cem., Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada.
