    John Merklinger - By Record Correspondent - Tavistock - John August Merklinger, a resident of Tavistock for the past 29 years, died Friday at Stratford General Hospital. He was 87, and had been a patient there for three months. He was born at Wellesley on May 24, 1872, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Merklinger. Prior to coming to Tavistock he lived at South Easthope Township and Waterloo. Mr. Merklinger was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving are his wife the former Henrietta Henkel, six sons, Peter of Waterloo, Fred of Reed City, Mich., David of Woodstock, Samuel, Frank and George of Tavistock, a foster-son, Eugene Heuglin of Chatham, and four daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Ida) Thaler of Painesville, Ohio, Miss Elizabeth at home, Mrs. Walter (Mabel) Meisner of East Zorra Township, and Mrs. Clarence (Frances) Neeb of Tavistock, 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The body is at the James H. Francis Funeral Home, Tavistock, where the funeral will be conducted at 2 pm, Monday. Burial will be in South Easthope Cemetery. Pastor George Sim will officiate.

    Henry Merklinger - By Record Correspondent - Tavistock - July 2 - Henry Merklinger, 72, died at his home here today. He had been in failing health for many months. A native of Wellesley Township where he was born March 2, 1877, Mr. Merklinger has resided in Tavistock for the past 42 years. He retired ten years ago from a plumbing and tinsmithing business. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, a son, Loren, Kitchener; and daughter, Mrs. Henry (Frieda) Neeb, of (?) Easthope Township (?), John, Tavistock; two (?) Mary Thompson, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Miss Lydia Merklinger, Waterloo, and three grandchildren. A son, Walter, predeceased him in 1945. The body is resting at the James H. Francis Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 pm with a private service at the residence. Later a memorial service will be held in St. Paul's Lutheran Church and interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

    MERKLINGER, Peter D. - At his residence, Maples Home for Seniors in Tavistock, on Thursday, July 28, 1988, after a lengthy illness, Peter David Merklinger, aged 85 years.

    He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church for 33 years. He had been a barber in Kitchener for 41 years until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Waterloo and Ayr Masonic Lodges AF and AM.

    Father of Audrey and father-in-law of Ronald Murray of Edmonton, Alta.; brother of Louis of Windsor, Arthur of Oakville. Two grandchildren, Murray Goodwin and Lorrie Lyster and three great-grandchildren, Cheryl and Allison Lyster and Dale Goodwin, also survive.

    Predeceased by his parents; his three wives, Madeline Klages, Ruth Schafer and Isabel Muir; one sister, Gertrude (Mrs. Howard Schedewitz) and two brothers, John and Edward. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 821 King St. W., on Tuesday at 4 p.m., with Pastor Karl Knaufi officiating.

    McBrine's Treasurer Dies at 58 - John A. Merklinger, 58, treasurer of the L. McBrine Company Limited, was stricken by a heart attack while curling at the Granite Curling Club Saturday night and died shortly afterwards at K-W Hospital. Mr. Merklinger, who lived at 110 Gatewood Rd., had been with the McBrine firm for 38 years, joining the company after attending Stratford Business College. He was an active Lutheran and was president of St. Paul's Lutheran church, treasurer of the Ontario district, Lutheran church - Missouri Synod and a member of its department of missions and church extension. He became treasurer of the Ontario district just two months ago. In addition, he was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club, a director of the Granite Curling Club and a member of the Kitchener Lawn Bowling Club. Born April 7, 1905, in Pigeon, Mich., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Merklinger, he came to Canada in 1914 and to Kitchener in 1924. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Allemang; a son, Kenneth, Ottawa; four brothers, Edward of Leaside, Peter of Kitchener, Arthur of Oakville, and Louis of Windsor, and a sister, Mrs. Howard (Gertrude) Schedewitz of Kitchener. The body will be at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until 1 pm tomorrow then at St. Paul's Church where Rev. Arthur Eissfeldt will conduct the funeral at 2: 30 pm. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.

    Mr. Merklinger was born at Bad Axe, Mich., but had lived most of his life in Waterloo. He was the son of the late John Merklinger and Mrs. Merklinger.
    Mr. Merklinger was connected with the Doersam Book Store in Waterloo for more than 45 years, retiring 18 months ago.
    Surviving are his mother; his wife, the former Adelta Cook; five brothers, Samuel, Frank and George, all of Tavistock, Frederick of Reed City, Mich., and David of Woodstock; four sisters, Miss Betty Merklinger and Mrs. Clarence (Frances) Need of Tavisock (sic), Mrs. Walter (Mabel) Meisener of Woodstock, and Mrs. Ida Thaler of Painesville, Ohio. He was predeceased by a brother, William.

    Ida Katherine Merklinger Thaler, 91, Gallipolis, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1993, at Holzer Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born Dec. 18, 1902 in Linkfield, Mich., daughter of the late John and Henrietta (Henkel) Merklinger.

    She was a resident of Gallipolis for 24 years, formerly residing in Painesville. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Gallipolis, long-time volunteer and contributing member of the French Art Colony, member of Eastern Star in Painesville and a continuing supporter of the Valley Artist Series. She was employed for several years at PJ's, Inc., a ladies apparel store.

    Survivors include four sons, Donald Thaler of Gallipolis, Glen Thaler,and James Thaler, both of Elyria, and David P.Thaler of Voorhees, N.J.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Francis Neeb. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence David Thaler, in 1956. They were married in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, in 1929. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Jeffrey, in 1981.

    Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Albert Earley officiating. Friends may call at McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, on Tuesday from 7-9, and one half hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund, 51 State St., Gallipolis, or to the French Art Colony, P.O. Box 472, Gallipolis. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers, including David, Chris, and John Thaler, Tommy Mathews, Chris Brown and Chris Rife.

    The funeral of John W. Merklinger, 48, of Mount Royal, Que., who died Friday in Cornwall from injuries received in a car accident, will be conducted here Tuesday. At the time of the accident, he and his wife, the former Wanda Fellbaum of Kitchener, were driving to Toronto to visit their son, John. Mrs. Merklinger was injured but was reported to be improving yesterday. Two passengers in the other car involved lost their lives and a third passenger was injured.

Frieda was a former member of the Hampstead Women's Institute and a director of the Wellesley-North Easthope Agricultural Society. She loved her flowers and doing crafts. She is the loving mother of Irene Epp, New Hamburg, Ralph Neeb and wife Louise, RR 1, GadsHill.
