    Notes:

    Peter Huefner.

There are none living in Hawksville to-day who are more widely known or are more popular and familiar among their fellow citizens than the gentleman whose name heads this sketch, Mr. Huefner was born in Hesse-Darmstadt in 1833. He came to Canada in 1852, Preston and Blair being the first places where he chose to locate He was about two years at Blair and eight months at Preston. At Blair he was employed at his trade, tailoring, with the late John Tomb, a figure well known for many years throughout Waterloo County. Mr. Huefner came to Hawksville in 1854, and ever since has been identified with the village, and conducted his tailor shop until about two years ago when he gave that branch over to his son George, who is now doing a successful business, As token of his popularity, Mr. Huefner was appointed postmaster of Hawksville in September 1889, an office in which he has given thorough satisfaction to the people of both political parties, be being a Conservative politically. He was married April 22, 1856, to Miss Magdalena, daughter of George Seip, formerly of Waterloo. By this union there were four children. The mother died in 1865. In the following year, 1866, he was again married, his second wife, being Catharine, daughter of Philip Koch. The latter died in Michigan several years ago. There have been no children by the second marriage. About a year ago Mr. Huefner experienced a sad misfortune in losing by death a favorite son, William, who was living in Manitoba. Mr. Huefner returned from there a short time ago, where he had remained about six months, taking care of the deceased, during his illness, and seeing to his burial after his demise. He has also a son living in Rochester, N.Y. Mr. Huefner yet occasionally works at his trade, when the occasion requires it, to assist his son in case of a rush. But this is not compulsory. He has made good use of his time when in the vigor of youth, so that in the declining years of his life he is not handicapped by a lack of the necessaries of life, to keep body and soul together, and be often lends a helping hand to charity or laudable enterprises in his community. He is invariably in good humor, is very accommodating in his official capacity, and there is not a postmaster in the province subject to fewer complaints. If he ever retires from the office it will not be on account of having failed to properly accommodate the public. Outside of the post-office, Mr. Huefner has held no political office, and has no keen aspirations for political honors. He has a very fine memory, and can recite some interesting data regarding the early days of Hawksville.

    ____________

    George Huefner.

The individual who is probably more sought after by the prominent and well-to-do citizens of a community is the fashionable tailor, and there is no person here better prepared to cater to their daily needs than the above named gentleman. Mr. Huefner, besides being thoroughly equipped to turn out the most fashionable and stylish suit desired, is also prepared to furnish the material, as he keeps on hand quite a large stock of the best foreign and domestic tweeds and other fabrics for his patrons to select from. About two years ago he acquired control of the fine patronage for many years enjoyed by his father, and has met with success from the start. He will always be found at his post ready to accommodate all who may favor him with their patronage. Having worked for years under the careful instructions of his father, one of Waterloo county's oldest and most experienced tailors, he ought to be in a position to compete with the best of them. He is yet young and enjoying single blessedness. Give him a call when you want a stylish suit.
