    Notes:

    Yantzi. - Michael K. Yantzi was born in France, Aug. 22, 1847; died in North East Hope, Ont., on July 6, 1917; aged 69 y. 10 m. 14 d. He came with his parents to Canada when he was about two years old.

    In his early youth he accepted Christ as his Savior, was baptized, and remained faithful to the end as a member of the Amish Mennonite Church. On Dec. 3, 1872, he was married to Barbara Ruby and lived in matrimony 42 y. 2 m. 3 d. To this union were born 6 sons and 5 daughters. His wife and 1 son preceded him to the spirit world. He leaves to mourn their loss 5 sons, 5 daughters, 20 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters.

    On Sept. 9, 1883, he was ordained as deacon in East Zorra A. M. Church, on April 20, 1902, he was called to the ministry and on Oct. 21, 1914, he was ordained as bishop in the East Zorra A. M. congregation, in which capacities he faithfully served his Lord and Master. He was buried on July 9 at the E. Z. A. M. church where services were conducted by C. Kropf and D. M. Steinman.     Yantzi.-Joseph K. Yantzi was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., March 10, 1852. In his young days he accepted Christ as his Savior and was a faithful member of the East Zorra A. M. congregation till his death. On Feb. 15, 1881, he was joined in holy wedlock to Mary Bender of Waterloo Co., Ont. This union was blest with two children (John and Fannie, wife of Amos Birkey). On Sept. 3, 1889, his wife died. On Nov. 10, 1891, he was married to Mary Kropf (nee Lichti). On September 9, 1904, his second wife died. March 15, 1900 he was married to Annie Bender (nee Schwartzentruber). This union was blest with 2 sons (Joseph and Aaron). In 1881 he moved to the place 1 mile east of Tavistock, Ont., where he lived units his death. He was a peaceful, honest, and industrious man, honored and loved by all his neighbors and friends. About 14 years ago his health failed him, so that he could not work any more. He passed away peacefully on June 27 in that blessed hope of a living Redeemer after an illness of nine weeks duration, being faithfully nursed by his loving wife and neighbors who lent her a helping hand. Aged 74 y. 3 m. 17 d. He leaves his wife, 3 sons, 1 daughter, 3 grandchildren, 1 brother, 1 sister, besides 1 step-son, 3 step-daughters, and 14 grandchildren. Burial June 30 at East Zorra A. M. church in the presence of a great number of friends. Services at the home by Bro. Peter Spenler and at the church by Bros. Jacob R. Bender and D. S. Jutzi.

    Mrs. Catherine Schwartzentruber, 78, widow of the late Joel Schwartzentruber, died on Wednesday at the home of her son-in-law, Christian Leis, after a long illness. A native of Waterloo County, she lived for 55 years in East Zorra. Mrs. Schwartzentruber was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Yantz. She was a member of the Amish-Mennonite church, 16th line of East Zorra. Surviving are a son, Joel, a daughter, Mrs. Christian Leis, both of East Zorra, a stepson, Jacob, of Tavistock, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Aaron Ruby of Colorado. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 1.30 p.m. at the home of the son-in-law, Concession 13, thence to East Zorra Amish-Mennonite church, 16th line, for memorial service. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Daniel Iutzi of East Zorra and Bishop Amos Schwartzentruber, missionary-on-furlough from South America, will officiate.

She had been in failing health for some time. Married on Nov. 16, 1897, to Menno Ropp, who survives. They lived together in wedded life for 61 y. 1 m. 8 d. Surviving also are 2 sons (Michael and David, East Zorra), 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters (Bena- Mrs. Solomon Streicher, Annie- Mrs. Menno B. Ropp, Katie- Mrs. David Brenneman, and Barbara- Mrs. Joe Swartzentruber), and 3 brothers (Chris, Jacob, and Noah). Preceding her in death were one son, 3 brothers, and one grandson. Funeral services at the East Zorra Church were in charge of Joel Swartzentruber and Daniel Wagler; burial in adjoining cemetery.

    Jantzi.-Daniel R. Jantzi was born in Oxford Co., Ont., Aug. 5, 1882; died in Perth Co., Ont., July 2, 1929; aged 46 y. 10 m. 28 d. In early life he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was received into church fellowship in the East Zorra A. M. Congregation. He was an active worker in the church and loyal to his Savior to the end which came very unexpectedly. He was working with the carpenters and fell from the barn roof. He died thirty-seven hours later, never fully regaining consciousness. On Nov. 16, 1905, he was married to Catherine Schlegel. This union was blessed with three children: Henry, Selena (wife of William Schumm), and Selma (wife of Aaron Ruby). These with their mother mourn the loss of a beloved husband and father. He also leaves 2 grandchildren, 4 brothers, and 5 sisters. Funeral services were held at the East Zorra A. M. Church, conducted by P. Boshart, C. Schultz, Jacob R. Bender, and D. S. Jutzi.

    As a little girl, seven or eight years old, Barbara had diptheria, and she and her mother were quarantined in the bedroom for quite a long time. Her grandfather used to come outside the window, and her mother would open it, and her grandfather would pray for her. Her youngest brother Ezra slipped into the bedroom one time and did get a touch of diptheria but not as serious.

    Christian R. Yantzi, 82, Tavistock, died Saturday morning at Stratford General Hospital where he had been a patient for a day. He was a native of East Zorra Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Yantzi, and was born Feb. 16, 1886. He had farmed in North Easthope Township until retiring to Tavistock in 1940. Mr. Yantzi was a member of the Tavistock Mennonite Church.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Nancy Bender; two sons, Mahlon, Petersburg; Lester, Tavistock; nine daughters, Mrs. Solomon (Edna) Gerber, Brunner; Mrs. Milton (Melinda) Roth, are: Mrs. Lorne (Anna) Baechler, New Hamburg; Mrs. Lloyd (Wilma) Stere, and Mrs. Alvin (Dorothy) Lebold, Tavistock; Mrs. William (Mary) Baechler, Zurich; Mrs. Carlyle (Ruby) Holst, Petersburg; Mrs. Mahlon (Emma) Steinman, Shakespeare, and Mrs. John (Verna) Brayshaw, Galt; two brothers, Noah, Shakespeare, and Jacob, East Zorra; 47 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

    The Robert Krug Funeral Home was in charge. The funeral service was held yesterday afternoon at the 16th line East Zorra Mennonite Church, and burial followed in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Newton Gingrich officiated.

Hospital, from a stroke, Apr. 6, 1968; aged 82 y. 1 m. 15 d. In 1911 he was married to Nancy Bender, who survives. He farmed in East Zorra township, retiring to Tavistock in 1973.

    Lloyd passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Hanover Village LTC, on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the age of 94.

    Beloved husband of Ida (nee Shantz) for 64 years. Loving father of Gail Veitch (Elvin Martin). Cherished grandfather and great-grandfather of Graham (Lindsay) and their children Bryson and Sloane, Bryan (Holly) and their children Zac and Raya, and Katie (Chris) Armstrong and their son Sam. Will be fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law Jean Swartzentruber, Helen Shantz and Marie Shantz.

    Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Barbara (nee Jantzi) Schwartzentruber; brother of Lester (Erma), Ray, Omar (Ada), Glen as a child and Edith (Mel) Erb. Brother-in-law of Howard (Hilda), Wilfred (Selda), Armand (Irene), Nyal (Helen), Etta (Lloyd) Shantz, Robert (Lena), Mahlon, Ion, Arley (Mabel), and Esther (Aaron) Enns.

    Lloyd was a longtime member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church, Kitchener.

    Born Feb 25 1926 near New Hamburg to the belated Michael R & Nancy (Jutzi) Yantzi

    Dreams of becoming a nurse led her to Rockway Collegiate Secondary School at age 26, followed by a nursing diploma from Victoria School of Nursing in London in 1958. She returned to Western University, London, to achieve a teaching certificate & spent a 26-year career teaching nursing with Conestoga College School of Nursing in Stratford. Employment included the surgical unit at K-W Hospital & pediatrics at Stratford General & a short voluntary service term in St Anthony, Newfoundland. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Religion & Culture with Waterloo Lutheran (now Wilfrid Laurier) University in 1972. Nelda served 2 terms on the board of directors of Tricounty Mennonite Homes (Nithview), where she later resided for the last 9 months of her life.
    Nelda married Elmer Kropf at Hillcrest Mennonite Church on Sep 24 1982 & they resided in Tavistock. Nelda was an active member of Tavistock Mennonite Church and led in many church roles of Bible studies, WMSC quilting projects & administration. During their retirement they enjoyed travelling, gardening, family events, volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages & Nelda created many quilts.

    Nelda was predeceased by her husband Elmer Kropf on July 25 1994 & by sisters Marion (Wilmer) Bender, Katie (Lorne) Bender & brother Lloyd (Katie) Yantzi.

    Lovingly remembered by step sons Ron (Mary) Kropf of Tavistock, Ken (Dianne) Kropf of Tavistock, Bruce (Charlene) Kropf of Stratford, Barry (Mary) Kropf of RR 1 Shakespeare, & by 10 grandchildren & 22 great grandchildren, by sister-in-law Pearl Yantzi, nieces & nephews Richard (Jackie) Bender, Rosanna Olsson, Mary Ellen (Richard) Tompkins, Jim (Beatrice) Bender, Rob (Gail) Bender, Pat Bender and LeEtta Erb.

    YANTZI- Elroy R. Yantzi was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont. At the age of 15 he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and was received into church fellowship at the Amish Mennonite Church near Baden by Bishop D. S. Iutzi upon confession of faith and water baptism on Oct. 20, 1940. On May 31, 1941, he was struck by a car in the city of Kitchener and severely injured, from which he never regained consciousness. On June 2 he fell asleep as we hope and trust in Jesus at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital; aged 16 y. 3 m. 25 d. He, the only child, leaves to mourn, his bereaved parents, Noah and Susan Yantzi, and many relatives and friends.

    She was the former Selma Schwartzentruber, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Schwartzentruber of Tavistock, and was born in East Zorra, Nov. 5, 1917, Mrs. Litwiller was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, and was vice-president of the Women's Missionary Service Auxiliary of the church.

    Surviving besides her second husband to whom she was married April 7, 1954, and her parents, are five sons, Wray and Paul Bender and Newton, Douglas and Robert Litwiller, all of Kitchener; five daughters, Grace Bender, Toronto, Mrs. James (Lorna) Brubacher, and Mrs. Clare (Carole) Maltby, both of Kitchener, Mrs. Alex (Alice) Kinsie, Breslau, and Wanda Litwiller, at home. Also surviving are three brothers, Elroy and Willis Schwartzentruber, both of East Zorra Township, and Vernon Schwartzentruber, Sebewing, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Laverne (Nelda) Lichti, North Easthope Township, and Mrs. Wilmer (Katie) Wagler, South Easthope Township, and 17 grandchildren.

    Her first husband, Walter Bender, predeceased her in 1945. The body will be at the Robert Krug Funeral Home, Tavistock, until 10 a.m. Thursday.     Mrs. Milton Litwiller of Tavistock died on Monday of last week at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 51.

    She was the former Selma Schwartzentruber, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Schwartzentruber of Tavistock, and was born in East Zorra, Nov. 5, 1917. Mrs. Litwiller was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, and was vice-president of the Women's Missionary Service Auxiliary of the church.

Also surviving are three brothers, Elroy and Willis Schwartzentruber, both of East Zorra Township, and Vernon Schwartzentruber, Sebewing, Mich ; two sisters, Mrs. Laverne (Nelda) Lichti, North Easthope Township, and Mrs. Wilmer (Katie) Wagler, South Easthope Township, and 17 grandchildren.

    Her first husband, Walter Bender predeceased her in 1945.

    Funeral service was held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, on Thursday, Rev. Rufus Jutzi officiating. Burial was in the Church cemetery

    LICHTI, Nelda Nelda Lichti, 87, of Tavistock passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2011. She was born on December 8, 1923 in East Zorra Township, Oxford County, a daughter of the late Joel and Sarah (Bender) Schwartzentruber. On November 17, 1943 she married Laverne Lichti, who predeceased her on January 12, 1993. Nelda is survived by her six children, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grand-children; John and Norma Lichti of New Hamburg, Chris (Kim) Lichti, Abby, Garrett, and Sarah Lichti; Dan Lichti of Kitchener and Deena Mandell, Andrew Lichti and Rebecca Lichti; Roy and Mardi Lichti, of New Hamburg, Tim (Annie) Lichti, Derrick Lichti, Alyssa (Dave) Kerfoot; Ruth and Dwight Steinman of Tavistock, Maria Steinman, Bethany Steinman, Catherine Steinman; Ruby and Miguel Barrenengoa of Argentina, Pablo Barrenengoa, Emily Barrenengoa, Amanda Barrenengoa; Diane Lichti and Bruce Bechtel of New Hamburg, Craig Bechtel, Evan Bechtel. Nelda was also the Canadian mother and grandmother of Roman and Emilia Orlinski, and Monika of Wellesley. She was predeceased by her great-grandson Connor Lichti, May, 2002. Nelda is survived by her brother-in-law Wilmer Wagler and sister-in-law Hilda Swartzentruber. She was pre-deceased by her brothers and sisters Vernon Swartzentruber (Elizabeth); Elroy Swartzentruber (Annie Mae), (Verda); Selma Bender Litwiller (Walter), (Milton); Katie Wagler; Willis Swartzentruber. Also survived by her Lichti brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Elmer and Annie Roth, Magdalena Wagler, Louis and Loretta Lichti, Floyd and Catherine Steinman. She was predeceased by her Lichti brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Allen and Barbara Bast, David and Fannie Lichti, Nicholas and Verna Lichti, Albert and Kaye Lichti, Julius and Floretta Lichti, Willis and Laura Lichti, Emerson Wagler. Nelda and Laverne farmed together in North Easthope Township for over 35 years. Hidden Acres Camp and Retreat Centre grew out of a corner of their farm, and both Nelda and Laverne, along with many good friends and peers contributed countless hours of hard work to the building and development of the camp, now almost 50 years old. Nelda was a hard worker and good organizer, and served in many ways and many places. She offered her talents at various times to Rockway Mennonite High School, Nithview Auxiliary, MCC New Hamburg Thrift Store, MCC Relief Sale. Nelda and Laverne served several times with Mennonite Disaster Service in short term work assignments following natural disasters in Canada and the United States. She was a member and active participant of Tavistock Mennonite Church. Nelda was an avid gardener, loved flowers and never missed an opportunity to share her appreciation of a new bud or healthy plant with others. Although she kept herself busy, she always made time for a visit. She appreciated all of her many nieces and nephews, loved to travel, and stay connected with her many friends and relatives. Relatives and friends will be received at the Tavistock Mennonite Church on Monday, October 10th, 7-9 p.m., and Tuesday, October 11th, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be on Wednesday, October 12th at 10 a.m. at East Zorra Mennonite Church Cemetery on 16th Line, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Tavistock Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hidden Acres Endowment Fund or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
