    Grandmother Ratz Departed

The funeral of Salome Ratz relict of the late John Ratz, took place from the family residence here, on Monday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. G.F. Brown, pastor of Zion Evangelical Church, of which deceased was a founder and constant member for upwards of forty years, conducted the service at the house. The choir of the church assisted in the musical service.

In the course of his remarks, the Rev. Mr. Brown paid tribute to the highly Christian character of Grandmother Ratz, as she was familiarly known, who had been a loving mother both to her own and her children's children. Almost from the time she learned to read she had been a faithful reader of the Christliche Botsch and the religious organist of the Evangelical denomination, a period of 70 years. She had endured with patience and resolute with Christian courage, the larger afflicions of a long life, including the loss of her husband and seven out of ten sons and daughters. The recent death of her youngest son, David, was, however more than she could bear and her frail body was unable to resist, the attack of pneumonia with which she was seized and she slept peacefully away on Friday evening last. The remains were laid to rest in the Union Cemetery at Elmira.

Two sons, Major (Dr.) Ratz, of Ottawa, and George, of Elmira, and one daughter, Mrs.W.J. McMurtry, of London, survive. Also one brother and two sisters, namely; Mr. S.B.

Heist, of Kitchener; Mrs. Lydia Frey, of Elmira, and Mrs. Simon Heist, of Salem, Oregon. Twenty-seven grandchildren survive.

A large number of friends and acquaintances from outside points attended the funeral.

The late Salome Ratz was daughter of Simon Heist and Salome (Burkhardt) Heist, being born on Maple Grove Farm near the City of Kitchener, on Dec. 29th, 1835. She was married to John Ratz in 1855 after which they moved to a farm 2 miles west of Elmira where they remained for twenty years, when they removed to Elmira, where the late John Ratz acquired milling and other large business interests. Her husband died in 1889, and since that time Mrs.Ratz has maintained the family home in Elmira. She was most devoted to her family, to her church and her friends and will be greatly missed.

Saloma — Reeve John Ratz. John (son of Valentine Ratz and Anna Gertrute "Gertrude" Lanz) was born 7 Dec 1833, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was christened 19 Oct 1834, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 14 Oct 1889, Elmira Mennonite Cemetery, Elmira, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , Elmira Union Cemetery, Elmira, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. He was born on a farm 1 ½ miles west of Elmira, in 1858, attended the Elmira public schools and took a short course at the Berlin High School, after which he engaged in milling. After this he clerked in the store of Ratz & Baetz four years. He then took charge of the saw and heading mills of his firm, and has become an expert in that line.

    Prominent Citizen Passes Away

Again the truth of the adage "Misfortune seldom comes singly" has been demonstrated in our midst. IN a period extending over less than thirteen months, the Ratz family has mourned the death of no less than four adult members. On Feb. 3rd 1909, word was received here that Arthur, son of Mr. Daniel Ratz, had died suddenly at Toronto. About a week or ten days later came the news of the death of William, son of Mr. Simon Ratz of typhoid, at Ottawa. Last Dec. occurred the demise of Mr. Daniel Ratz, of Bright's disease, and last Friday the death of his brother Simon who was at the time of the former's funeral hale and hearty and who seemed as likely to live to a good old age, as most of the men of his age. He was taken ill shortly before the beginning of the year and, with the exception of a week or two was confined to the house up to the time of his death.

    ____________

    THE RATZ BROS.

It has always been my custom in writing up the industries of a community to first direct attention to its flouring mills, because from them is derived the staff of life, without which we would find a precarious subsistence. No other industry is of greater importance to the merchants, mechanics and inhabitants in general. In this particular, Elmira has a first-class establishment in the Elmira Roller Mills, owned and operated by the above well known firm. These mills were established in 1867 by a joint stock company. Sometime about the year 1870 they became the property of the late John Ratz, the father of the members of the present firm, in company with his brother Jacob. The latter is now living in New Hamburg, having withdrawn from the firm in 1872. His interest was then purchased by Isaac Wenger, it then being conducted under the firm name of Ratz & Wenger from 1872 to 1875, when Mr. Ratz became sole proprietor and operated the same until 1882, after which he gave his sons an interest in the business. It continued under the firm of Ratz & Sons until 1889, when the senior member of the firm died. The latter was a man honorable and prominent in the estimation of all who knew him, being both charitable and public spirited in every sense of the term. He was one of the first Reeves of the village and one of the main advocates of the railroad project for Elmira, and was prominent among those who rendered substantial encouragement to the movement that gave to the village its first railroad communication. Since his death the mills have been owned and operated by his three sons, Simon H. Daniel and George. They were among the first in the county to adopt the full roller process, and now have a capacity for turning out one hundred barrels of a superior grade of flour per day. A 75 horse power engine supplies the motive power. Their special brands are, viz, "Elmira" and "Sunshine," which are popular products in the market. They have an extensive local trade and a large demand in the maritime Provinces for their output.

They also buy and pay the highest market price for all the wheat that comes to their doors. In addition to the flouring mills the firm has a sawmill in connection, in which they do a large amount of custom sawing for the farmers of many miles around, besides manufacturing the heading, staves and hoops for their flour barrels. They also manufacture a first-class grade of shingles. Elmira's splendid electric light system is furnished by this firm, their plant having a capacity for producing 500 incandescent lights for that purpose. The brilliant, steady illumination of the town at night is ample proof that they are furnishing a first class article and giving the people good satisfaction. The Ratz Bros were all born within a mile and a half of Elmira and are among her honorable, industrious and enterprising citizens. The amount of money they pay out to the farmers annually is high in the thousands.

    Demise of Daniel Ratz

When, several months ago, the news was spread that Mr. Daniel Ratz, one of the prominent and respected citizens, an ex-reeve of Elmira, and an ex-County Commissioner, was suffering from one of the most dangerous and incurable forms of Bright's disease, feelings of regret and sympathy spread rapidly over a wide spread circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances, who almost hoping against hope, watched for favourable symptoms and rejoiced when even a temporary improvement manifested itself. Although chances for permanent improvement were meagre from the beginning, it was scarcely expected that the end would come so soon, although the demise did not come unexpectedly.

The deceased was a man of robust health until a year or so ago when symptoms of the dread diseased made their appearance, but were not deemed dangerous by the patient. Later expert medical advice was called in and the true condition of affairs was revealed.

Through the death of Mr. Ratz, a family consisting of a widow and three daughters, the youngest of which is aged 10 years, are bereft of a kind husband and an indulgent father and the village and the district of a public, spirited and useful citizen, who gave liberally of his time to the service of the community, and a prominent business man.

Daniel Ratz was the second eldest son of the late John Ratz, the first reeve of Elmira. He was born on a farm 1 ½ miles west of Elmira in 1860.

He attended the Elmira Public School and later removed, with his family, to Elmira. In his early manhood he conducted the flouring mills at Salem. After disposing of his interests there, he returned to Elmira and on the death of his father in the year 1889, became partner in the milling business left by the latter.

In 1892 and 1893 Mr. Ratz served as a village councillor. He retired from municipal life until 1901 when he was elected Reeve of Elmira, an office he held until the law required that the County representatives by chosen by the various representative districts. He was then elected County Commission for Dis. No. 7, including Woolwich and Elmira, until the law was again changed to the system of representation by the reeves of the various municipalities. He lived retired for several years, but was induced in 1908, to take up the candidature for the local Parliament, in the Liberal cause, and in opposition to Dr. Lackner, the present incumbent of the office of M.P.P. for North Waterloo. He was unsuccessful but was universally credited with having conducted an honourable campaign.

At the time of his death, Mr. Ratz was 49 years and 23 days of age. His funeral was largely attended and many were the floral tributes sent by individuals and societies, which accompanied him to his last resting place the Elmira Union Cemetery.

    ELMIRA

    SHOE, FELT AND WOOLEN WORKS

Among the manufacturing industries of Elmira the above concern must be reckoned one of the most important, as it gives employment to the largest number of wage-earners and many of them expert and skilled mechanics. It is a part of the old Winger & Weaver Woolen factory. The latter, the first indusdry of note in this town, was established in 1856, by Peter Winger and Samuel Weaver who were prominent among the early settlers in this vicinity. They commenced operations in 1856 and continued to run it until 1873, when Mr. Henry Winger, son of the well known member of the firm, took charge and operated it until 1883, and after that in company with his brother, J. B. Winger, until 1895, at which time they added the felt manufactory. It was then operated by J. B. Winger and Amasa Winger for short one year, when in the spring of 1896, a joint stock company was formed and the plant improved and placed on a more extensive scale. The company is made up of some of the leading and most responsible citzens of the town, viz: Henry Winger, J. B. Winger, Amasa Winger, J. P. Lackhardt, Weber & Erb, M. Weichel, J. S. Weichel, Daniel Ratz, Casper Ziegler, David Snider, Chas. Klinck and son George, Henry Mogk and Isaac Hilborn. Board of Directors: A. H Erb, President; Henry Winger, Daniel Ratz, Casper Ziegler and J. P. Luckhardt, John Peel, Treasurer and general manager.

They manufacture both leather and felt goods, and the class of work turned out is equal in style, workmanship, finish and material to that of any other establishment of the kind in Ontario. There is a steady demand for about all the company can manufacture with their present facilities, most of their goods going to the Northwest and the Maritime Provinces. From twenty-five to thirty hands are employed. The factory is equipped with the latest and best improved machinery, and a walk through the building when all hands are at work will convince any person that experienced workmen are employed and that great care is exercised in putting the material together in a way that must produce a popular and durable article. The very latest styles of footwear are turned out. The company still continues the woolen factory and manufactures fine tweeds, flannels blankets and other woolen goods, and are always prepared for custom work.

    Notes:

Death of Mrs. Doerbecker - By the news of the death of Mrs. William Doerbecker at about 4: 30 last Saturday afternoon, a gloom was cast over the whole community. She was in her usual good health and spirits until Wednesday morning, when upon summoning medical attendance, she was found to be suffering from acute peritonitis.

Although all was done that human skill and care could do, she was not able to withstand the severity of the disease, and passed calmly away surrounded by her family and relatives at the time mentioned above.

Mrs. Doerbecker, formerly Miss Susan Ratz, was born near Elmira, some 45 years ago and was well and favorably known by a large circle of friends and relations. She was a consistent and enthusiastic member of the Evangelical church, was much devoted to all the departments of church work, in which she will be greatly missed by the members of the St. Jacobs congregation. Her husband, a family of four young girls and many relatives have the sincere sympathy of the very wide circle of acquaintances in their sudden and irreparable loss.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., and was very largely attended, interment taking place at St. Jacobs and service conducted by Rev. W. W. Hehn assisted by the Rev's Knechtel and Wing, of Berlin and Meyer, of Elmira.

Mr. D. D. Ratz, Manager of Royal Bank, Drops Dead

Like a lightning stroke from a clear sky, came the report that Friday morning that Mr. D. D. Ratz, manager of the local branch of the Royal Bank had died suddenly. As Mr. Ratz had attended his duties as usual and had shown no symptoms of illness, the report of his sudden demise seemed almost incredible, but it proved to be only too true.

His death occurred shortly before nine o'clock. Consider snow had fallen during the previous night, and before going to his work, deceased shoveled the snow from the walks along his property. He went to the bath room to prepare for his office when he was seized with heart failure. His wife heard him fall and when she arrived to the scene, his spark of life had fled. Medical aid could do nothing to bring it back.
The news of the sudden demise was received with consternation, as the departed was a popular official and a highly respected citizen. He was the youngest son of the late John Ratz, the first Reeve of Elmira. He was born in the Township of Woolwich on August 19th, 1875. The greater part of his childhood was spent in Elmira when he moved with his parents as an infant. He was educated in the Elmira Public School and Galt Collegiate Institute. He was engaged for several years in the office at Perine & Co. at Doon, Ontario. In 1899, he accepted a situation in the Traders Bank, where he gradually rose from the position of junior to the office of manager to which then he was promoted on the departure of Mr. R. H. MacMicking? and which he held until his death. He was a valued employee of a great commercial institution and his place will be hard to fill.

Deceased was married to Miss Myrtle Otto, whom he leaves with her two- year- old son, to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. Besides the aged mother of the Ratz family, originally consisting of ten children only two brothers survive the deceased, namely Mr. George Ratz of Elmira and Dr. J. H. Ratz now officially employed as Medical Examiner, on the Dominion Pensions Board, Ottawa. One sister, Mrs. McMurtry, of London, Ont., also survives.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community in their great loss. As a citizen the deceased will be greatly missed, he having been cordial, energetic and public spirited and at all times ready to do his share to the advancement of the community's interest. Comment: There were a couple times during the obituary that were illegible. Question marks (???) have been place.

    Notes:

Dr. Albert Devitt Heist (1872-1955) was a homeopathic doctor and a dentist who spoke at many health and archealogy seminars. He practiced dentistry from 1898 to 1902 in Kitchener, Ontario, New York, and then graduated from the Atlantic College of Osteopathy in 1905 at the age of 33 and became a homeopathic surgeon, using an old practice known as "dry-cupping," which is a medical practice still being used in some places. He also enjoyed studying archaeology. He was a practicing member of the Bahai'i faith and held meetings in his home regularly.

Albert Devitt was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada to Simon Burkhardt Heist, Jr (1845-1925) and Magdalena "Lena" Barbara Keller Devitt (1850-1936). On 11 June 1902, Albert married wife (1) Lucile "Lucy" Lillian Cook (1877-1945). Together, Albert and Lucy had three daughters and one son: Elizabeth "Beth" Marguerite Heist (1903-1991) -married John Petrie Patterson (1898-1978), Lucile Janette Heist (1905-1992) -married Everett Sheppard Brown (1896-1971), Albert Dean Heist (1912-1970) -married Helen White (1915 - ?); had no children, and Eleanore Ruth Heist (1915-1995) -married Robert Earl Clise (1915-1985).

On 7 September 1947, Albert married wife (2) Alice Marion Cook (1896-1976). Alice was a staunch Baptist, who had never before married, and was employed as a secretary at a Baptist university in Buffalo, New York. In 1947, when Alice Marion Cook was aged 51, she married Dr. Albert Devitt Heist. Alice Marion Cook and Lucy Lillian Cook were sisters; both were the daughters of William Peter Cook and Elizabeth (Walty) Cook, and the descendants of Francis Cook of the Mayflower. Albert often said that, when he lost his beloved Lucy, he reached a little further up her branch on the tree to pick the next fruit!

Dr. Heist died 20 June 1955 in the Clifton Springs Sanitarium (near Geneva), Ontario County, New York, USA.

    Notes:

    Death of Wm. Ratz

"It never rains but it pours," is an adage that may be applied to the happenings affecting a prominent family of Elmira. Last week while the corpse of the only son of Mr. Daniel Ratz was being brought home from Toronto for burial, the latter's brother, Mr. Simon H. Ratz, received a telegram from Ottawa stating that his son William was lying at the hospital with a severe attack of Typhoid fever. MR. Ratz departed immediately for Ottawa found matters ? ? and was obliged to send a message home Saturday morning to the effect that the young man had died.

Wm. F. Ratz, was born in Elmira on the 22nd of September, 1883. He attended the public school here and proved a bright scholar, passing the Entrance examination when twelve years old. At 14 he passed the junior matriculation examination at the Guelph Collegiate Institute, after which he took a civil engineering course at the School of Practical Science passing his examination for civil engineer at 18 years of age. At this examination he obtained the highest honors in his class. In 1902 he entered his apprenticeship as Dominion Land Surveyor serving under J. F. Johnston, of New Westminster, B. C. and worked for a year in southern British Columbia. Til 1904 he was employed in the Surveyor General's office, Department of the Interior. He then obtained his commission as Dominion Land Surveyor, again with the highest honors. From that time until his death he worked on the Alaska boundary Survey in the Department of the Interior, under Dr. W. F. King, Chief Astronomer and His Majesty's Boundary Commissioner. Few men of his age have attained so high a position in the civil service of our country, and his chances of promotion were very bright, but it was not to be.

Deceased was held in high esteem by his associates, one of whom was Mr. Joshua Umbach son of our townsman, Mr. J. L. Umbach, at whose home he went in and out as though they were brothers. Dr. King also thought very highly of him. Mr. H. S. Mussell, who for four years had been the desk mate of deceased in the office, as well as his associate in field work, accompanied Mr. Ratz to Elmira with the remains.

The young man was sick in the hospital only five days though the insidious typhoid had probably been working in his system for some time.

He was a young man of pleasing and general disposition and of exceptional ability before whom stood, as far as man could see, a promising career. However, death intervened and cut short this young life, leaving his relatives and friends to mourn their great loss, in which the whole community sympathizes.

The funeral took place this (Wednesday) afternoon.

    Abram Lincoln Ratz
The community was shocked at the news of the sudden death of Mr. A. Lincoln Ratz in Belleville hospital on the night of April 2nd. Although in apparent good health, he suffered a severe stroke at Trenton on Tuesday afternoon and died shortly after being admitted to the hospital.
Born on Sept. 13, 1885, he obtained his primary education in the Elmira Public School, and later continued in the Kitchener Business College. He then entered the employ of the Traders' Bank serving first at Elmira and then at Tavistock. During this time he was keenly interested in sport, particularly hockey in which game he was the goal-keeper for the local seven. In 1904 he moved to Estevan, Sask., remaining there until 1908 when on the death of his father he returned to Elmira and within a few years, he, with Messrs Rahn and Wittich, formed a partnership to continue the former Ratz Bros.' flour mill. Shortly after the advent of Hydro in Elmira he joined the local staff, being variously employed in line work, house installation and cashier of the local office. He served as a sapper in the expeditionary forces with service in France during the great war. Since 1933 he had been at the R.C.A.F. camp at Trenton.
Familiarly known as "Link" to all in his home town, he had endeared himself to young and old alike and many will mourn his sudden passing.
He was unmarried and is survived by two sisters, Salome of London and Aileen of Drumheller, Alta.; also two brothers, Earl of Ottawa and Lorne of Oshawa.
The remains were brought to Elmira from Belleville on Saturday and the funeral took place from the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel here on Monday afternoon. The services were conducted here by Rev. C. H. Cornwell, pastor of the local Evangelical church, assisted by Rev. W. J. Zimmerman of Bridgeport. The pallbearers were Messrs. E. Daum, W. Martin, T. Koeber, R. Cleghorn, D. Keller and H.O. Weichel. Interment took place in the Elmira cemetery.
Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Miss Salome Ratz of London, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Ratz and son of Oshawa, Mr. Earl Ratz of Ottawa and Mr. Doerbecker and daughters of Kitchener.
