A deal has been consummated whereby Mr. John Letter, Waterloo's well known contractor becomes the owner of the furniture business of J. K. Shinn & Co, conducted by Mr. Shinn for the past twelve years. Mr. Letter has purchased the entire stock and will in addition to continuing the business of picture framing enter into the upholstering business and also do repairing in this line of trade. It is the intention of the new proprietor to build a three-storey addition to the present building extending as far back as Queen street [later named Regina]. The firm will be known as John Letter and Son and the business will be in charge of his son, Mr. Norman Letter and Mr. Geo. Gleiser. Mr. Letter proposes carrying on an up-to-date and thoroughly equipped establishment, which will compare very favorably with the best store in Western Ontario. The well known business ability and enterprise of Mr. Letter are a sufficient index that the new venture upon which he has embarked will be attended with success. Waterloo historian, Fred Shinn, 85, died

Fred Shinn of 230 Dawson St., died Oct. 5 at the K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was taken there a few days earlier after he collapsed in Waterloo Square. He was 85. A native of St. Louis, Miss., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kelly Shinn. He was a year old when the family moved to New Hamburg, then to Toronto and later to Amherst N.S. In 1895 they came to Waterloo where he lived most of his life since. He escaped death twice in his early years. He was five years old when he became seriously ill with scarlet fever. The doctor said he wouldn't survive the night. Later another doctor, treating him for an ear infection, told him he couldn't survive his teens. With that dour prognosis went warnings against all sporting activities, if he were to gain even those few years. He opted instead to enjoy whatever time was left to him and played baseball, hockey and cricket. His first job was in his father's undertaking business. When this was sold in the late 1900s [date is a misprint; could be 1908], he returned to St. Louis where he spent three years in an art store. After two years in Toronto, where he worked for the Robert Simpson Co., he became clerk in Waterloo Post Office. Five years later he returned to Toronto to work for Dominion Express, now the Canadian Pacific Railways. In 1921 he joined the Prudential Insurance Co and continued with the firm until his retirement in 1950. Afterwards, he spent some time with the city assessment department. An avid bowler, he liked to bowl 10-pins daily. He was a well-known local historian and wrote a weekly column on this topic for The Chronicle for several years. His wife, the former Irma Koening, died in 1936. He is survived by two sons, Earl of Waterloo and Ronald of Ottawa, three daughters, Mrs. George (Paula) Taylor and Mrs. Nellis [sic] (Esther) Lishman, both of Kitchener, and Mrs. John (Cora) Eix of Waterloo, one brother, one sister, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

    Death of Mrs. Norman Riffer

There passed away at the home of her parents at Waterloo, where she had been staying the last few weeks, Alma Shinn, wife of Mr. Norman Riffer, at the age of 24 years, 8 months and 21 days. Mr. and Mrs. Riffer were married on October 19th, 1911 and in joy and hopefulness started housekeeping. But a cloud soon appeared on the horizon of the happiness, Mrs. Riffer showed signs of failing health and medical men diagnosed it as a hopeless case of tuberculosis of the lungs. Mr. Riffer did everything he could for her and thinking there might still be a chance, sent her for treatment to the King Edward Sanitarium at Weston. But after nine weeks' stay there the doctors of the institution declared there was no hope for her. So she came home to Elmira, where she received every attention until she went to Waterloo where she gradually sank until the end came last Sunday morning.

The funeral takes place this afternoon at Waterloo. This is one of the many sad cases where the white plague gets in its work in our land.
