    MARY HAHN

    The funeral of Mrs. Mary Hahn, 80, who died Saturday at her home in Heidelberg was conducted Wednesday, July 29. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.

    Mrs. Hahn was born in Linwood. She had lived in Heidelberg for the past 60 years and was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

    Mrs. Hahn's husband, Adam, died in 1956.

    Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Herman (Mabel) Ziegler, Heidelberg; three brothers, Frederick and John Dechert of Linwood, and Robert Dechert of Bridgeport. She was also predeceased by four sisters and six brothers.

    Veteran of War, Menno Dechert, Passes Away Following Operation. Other News.

    The death occurred at the Hines Veteran Hospital Chicago. on February 10th of Menno Dechert, aged 41 years. The deceased was born in Linwood on March 17, 1890. In 1917 he enlisted with the American Army and served in France for 18 months. While overseas his health was impaired and he never recovered his strength. Death resulted from an operation performed at the Veteran's hospital in an effort to save his life. The deceased is survived his mother, Mrs. John Deckert Sr., of Linwood and by eight brothers, William of Glenallan and Milton, Clayton, Fred, John, Robert, Louis and Simon all residing In and around Linwood and by four sisters, Mrs. Adam Hahn, Heidelberg, Mrs. Clarence Herchenratter, Buffalo, Mrs. Albert Hahn, London and Hilda at home. The funeral was held on Sunday with six brothers of the deceased sag pallbearers.

    ELMIRA, Jan. 21 - The death of Clayton Michael Deckert, 52, of Linwood, occurred at the K-W Hospital yesterday.

    The son of Mrs. John Deckert, Sa., R.R. 1, Linwood, and the late John Deckert, he was born in Linwood, Feb. 21, 1896. He was an operator for the CPR for many years with stations at Streetsville, Toronto and Orangeville.

    In 1939 he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps and was stationed at Fort McMurray, Alta., as radio technician. Since his discharge in 1945 he had made his home with his mother. His wife, the former Violet Livingstone, predeceased him in 1926.

    Surviving is one son Stanley, Linwood, and one daughter, Helen, of Hamilton; one granddaughter; five brothers, Simon, Jack, Fred, Robert and Louis, all of Linwood; four sisters, Mrs. Irene Hergenroder, Buffalo; Mrs. Adam Hahn, Heidelberg; Mrs. John Rooney, St. Mary's; Mrs. Rebecca Bartley, Linwood.

    The body is resting at the residence, RR 1, Linwood, where a private service will be held Monday at 2 pm, followed by a public service at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Linwood. Interment will be made in the church cemetery. Rev. Walter Goss will officiate.

    Notes:

    Stan Deckert was born in 1925 and raised on a farm on the edge of Linwood in the Township of Wellesley. Throughout his life, Deckert was highly respected for his dedication and commitment to community service and volunteerism.

    In both work and service, Deckert's extensive civic involvement included long-term leadership roles with the Linwood Lion's Club, Linwood Park Board and Linwood Snofest. In addition to these organizations he was a volunteer fireman with the Linwood Fire Brigade for 26 years, serving 15 of those years as Fire Chief. Deckert also served as Linwood's representative on the Wellesley Township Council from 1973 to 1998.

    Any initiative brought forward by Deckert always had the best interests of the community at heart. He helped realize a Community Centre in the 1960s, a baseball diamond, fundraising dances, space for a fire hall and library, a sister-city initiative with Linwood, Michigan, and numerous grant requests for recreation projects.

    In athletics, Deckert was a valuable hockey and ball player playing on teams both in Linwood and Wellesley. During the 1940s and 1950s his team celebrated many championships. After his years of playing sports Deckert coached many young men's baseball teams. He was also instrumental in twice getting a proper ball diamond with lighting for the community.

    Through his lifetime, Deckert was honoured with a Certificate of Merit from the Government of Canada, the Melvin Jones Fellowship for Dedicated Humanitarian Service, and the Canada 125 Anniversary Commemorative Medal for significant contributions to his community.
